Why do disk permissions change and should I worry?

I noticed that my JavaAppletPlugin disk permission says that it should be something that it is not. I can temporarily fix it by doing a repair disk permissions but sometime later the JavaAppletPlugin disk permissions change back to the settings prior to the repair.
Why do these particular disk permissions change and should I worry about them?

Thank you for your answer and I appreciate it. However, I do have to admit that I am still bothered because, although it may be nothing to worry about, it still pops up as something my Mac thinks is in need of repair and I don't know why the permissions changed if they were supposed to be something specific before. Call me crazy but it seems like it should not pop up if everything were ok.

• Disk permissions changed after switching off FileVault

Hi,
I found my disk permissions changed after switching off FileVault, nearly everything belongs to "system" now.
Can anyone PLEASE tell me what permissions are standard for
-Desktop
-Applications
-System
-Libary
ore doesn't it matter anyway ????
Thanks a lot...

Assuming you're just talking about the Owner being System then:
The owner of Desktop should be your user name.
Applications and System should be System. Since these are not in your Home folder these permissions would have been corrected when you ran Repair Disk Permissions.
The Library folder depends on which Library folder you are talking about. If it's the Library folder that's in the same folder as System and Applications, then the Owner should be System, as well. Again, if that is not in your Home folder, then the permissions repair would have corrected it.
If, however, it's the Library that's in your Home folder, then it should have your username as the Owner.
Filevault only affects things that are in your Home folder so turning it on/off doesn't affect permissions anywhere else.

• Why do my permissions change on my iMac hard drive?

While performing hard drive maintenance on my iMac, I selected Verify Permissions and found many had changed. Why do permissions change, and does it make my iMac vulnerable to attack?

The Color Sync Utility is part of OSX and usually resides in the Application/Utilities folder.
Don't know how it appeared on your desktop.
But it is no malware, spyware or the like but as said part of OSX.

• Time machine disk permissions changed to read only

Somehow, my Time Machine disk permissions have now changed tand my backups are failing;
The permissions are:
Me - read/write, Staff - read/write, Everyone - read only. I clicked on the lock and entered my system password, but I cannot change anything.
Then I ran Disk Utilities to repair and verify. Still nothing. I rebooted, logged out, logged back in, etc.
There is plenty of space left on the 2 GB drive. It is a Seagate GoFlex drive. This seems to be a new problems that has not surfaced before. My backups always ran flawlessly.
What to do?

• Verify Disk Permissions stalls and will not finish

I noticed a little slow-down in performance lately, so I tried to repair the disk permissions. I attempted to verify first, but the process gets to the very end of the status bar and stalls. This is the last text displayed in the window whe the stall occurs: "Permissions differ on ./usr/share/man/man1/less.1, should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -r--r--r--"
I stopped verification and went straight to repair, but that also stalled at some point.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Your device (ID=8723) is not covered by the FAQ, so I would be interested in what model scanner you have so that I can add it. However, I doubt this is causing your problem.
In the Console application you can have several windows open at once. You'll find the system log (and others) listed on the File menu (it will open a new window). You can aslo click on the "Logs" icon to see more. A good idea is to have both a Console.log window and a system.log window when you are trying something out, since some messages go to one, others to the second, and occasionally to both.
If you look at kmosx: Spurious Permissions errors in 10.2 you'll see your messages listed toward the end. As Rich said, if you see these you have very nearly finished. Incidentally, why are you bothering with "Verify Permissions"? There's no point doing that for most users, just go straight to "Repair Permissions".

• Verify Disk permissions procedures and time?

How often should one Verify Disk Permissions?
Should this be done through the iMac Applications/Utities/Disk Utility.app or should this be done using the Lepard Installation Disk?
When it starts, how long should it take? The last time I did this, it took 5 hours. Is this excessive?
Thanks

Oh, you were going by the estimated time - don't, it's usually wildly inaccurate.
As far as using an install disc for Permissions repair, here's what Apple (and I) say:
+Should I start up from a Mac OS X install disc to repair disk permissions?+
+When possible, disk permissions should be repaired while started up from a Mac OS X volume (hard disk) that contains updated Mac OS X software, instead of a Mac OS X installation disc. Mac OS X software updates may change permissions on some files to improve security. When this occurs, the version of Disk Utility on the Mac OS X volume is updated to account for the new permissions. Running Disk Utility while started from the Mac OS X volume ensures that the changes made by software updates are preserved.+
The entire article can been seen [here|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751].
The top drive is always followed by volumes it contains - e.g. my hard drive is WDCxxx, then under it and indented are the two volumes (partitions) I have on it.

Sincerely,

Sorry!
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

• Disk Permissions changed after connecting mac via firewire on Target Disk Mode.

I have connected 2 macbook pros using firewire in target disk mode and the permissions on the destination macbook pro have changed. Now when I try to start the macbook pro, it stays on the grey screen and the apple sign changes to a prohibitory sign, therefore I cant log in.
Please help!
Thanks

I am unable to perform a safe boot, it simply wont happen.
I tried to start from mac osx install disk and that works so I am able to go disk utility, I can run 'verify disk' and 'repair disk' and it shows that everything is ok, however, I cant 'verify disk permissions' or 'repair disk permissions' as both are greyed out because 'the selected disk is not mounted'. I try mounting but that wont work either, I am told to 'disk can not be mounted, run first aid first and then retry'.
Furthermore, I try to perform 'archive and install' so I follow these instructions:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
But on number 7, intead of being able to choose volume to install to, there is nothing I can choose! There is no list. And of course I cant continue.
Any help is appreciated!

• Why do disk permissions keep getting corrupted?

The disk permissions on my Macbook Pro keep getting corrupted and I have to run the Disk Utility Program to repair them. What is likely causing this issue?

If you see permissions appear to be repaired again, it could be among those that can safely be ignored:

• Why has my clip changed and become magnified.

Hi Everyone!
I'm working with 3.5 FCE and transferred a clip (Copy and Paste) on to another Sequence or timeline.
When I go to play my new clip I see that my settings have changed. In other words what was a face on the original clip now is just a part of the head. Why is this happening? Everything has been magnified and grainy. What to do?

Well--let me see if I can explain myself better. If I take my HD footage from the browser to the viewer
it looks fine. The persons head is in full frame. At fit to window it sits @33 %. I then drag it into the timeline and at 25% i have this teeni frame that is now in the Canvas with only the part of the head showing and the parameters looking more like something for DV footage and not widescreen. The fit to window reads 83%.
Again--this is only happening with the one clip even though it has the same specs as the others.
Still miffed as to why this is happening and if this is what I'm stuck with.

• Application Support permissions changing and hanging processes

I'm running OS X 10.10.1 on a MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2013; 1.7 GHz Intel Core i7; 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3; 500 GB SSD). For the past few weeks, several applications have been freezing up regularly. In particular, Evernote and Keyboard Maestro have been the worst culprits. I found myself having to constantly force quit these and other applications and processes. I also noticed that, periodically (that is, several times a day), my ~/Library/Application Support directory becomes world-writable, for no apparent reason.
It turns out that these problems are related because, if I chown -R and chmod -R go-w the directory, everything runs smoothly for a while. However, the permissions have been reverting back so often, that I ended up creating a cron job that runs every 20 minutes, which fixes them. This works (i.e., nothing hangs, and I can use my computer without problems), but I would rather not have to do this, and I would really like to know *** could be constantly changing this directory's permissions to 777. I've run a deep virus scan using Bitdefender, so that (hopefully) rules out something sinister.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your reply.
I only installed the free version of Bitdefender (which runs on demand only, and not in the background) a couple of days ago, to rule out malware, so it can't be the cause of this.
I'm chowning to my user account, the owner of the home directory. Since my post, things have got worse (e.g., processes are hanging again, and TextMate won't even start), so I'm considering a clean install of OSX.

• Why did the permissions change on my log files?

My Messaging Server was running just fine, but then it crashed with an error
message that it couldn't write the log files. What happened?

Under the INSTALLATION root, there is only one file that should be owned by
root:

./bin/msg/store/bin/ressh

ALL other files should be owned by the user that Messaging is to be run as.
Changing the ownership of the log files will enable the server to start
immediately, but the ownership of the files should be addressed.

• Why do link addresses change, and how frequently does it happen?

I have several files on my Creative Cloud account which I share with clients with the links provided on the site by posting the link on my website. Those links keep breaking because the link to the file changes. How frequently does this happen? So I know when I need to go through and change them all over again.
