Why do GarageBand, iMovie, Photobooth, and Hulu and Youtube videos slow down my whole computer?

I have a higher end 13" MacBook Pro running OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 that I purchased in August of 2010. About a month ago, I was using iMovie to edit a project when all of a sudden it started responding extremely slowly. Like, near impossible to work on my project slow. The whole computer was lagging, the mouse was unresponsive and I could barely use the gestures on the trackpad to get to different programs. Eventually the pinwheel of death showed up, and I quit iMovie. As soon as it closed, everything returned to normal. I restarted the computer to see if that would help, but as soon as I opened iMovie again, the whole computer started lagging. I then noticed that the same problem occured when I used GarageBand, iPhoto, Skype, and when I watched Hulu or YouTube videos. With all of these programs/sites, everything is running fine beforehand, but when I open them up, chaos sets in. This problem doesn't occur when I use other intensive programs like Photoshop or Illustrator, nor while I'm browsing the web. The only web problems are when I watch a video. Any video. Other than that, web pages are as quick to load as ever, and I can use the computer normally for any other task. This is seriously a problem because I use iMovie and GarageBand for school a lot, and my grades depend on me being able to use these programs effectively. All of these problems have persisted with these apps since that first instance about a month ago, and no significant changes occurred to instigate them. In attempts to solve the situation, I have cleared my cache, freed up space on my drive (I have 56 free gigs out of 320), I have verified and repaired the disk permissions, and I have downloaded the Apple provided Trojan removal tool for Snow Leopard. This seemed to work for about 10 minutes, but the apps and videos quickly started lagging and slowing down my whole computer again. If anyone else has experienced anything like this, I would love to hear exactly what has happened to you and to see what you did to [try to] fix it. Thanks for reading all of this, I need all the help I can get right now. Also, I can't watch The Daily Show or The Colbert Report on Hulu anymore, and it's killing me! Thanks again.

It's very difficult to say without knowing more about your system. There are a number of possibilities. First, your 13" lacks a discrete GPU, so the CPU is doing the work that a GPU would have done as far as decoding video streams, etc. Each video stream will consume considerable resources from the machine, and if you have multiple things running with video streams being decoded (for example, a browser with video Flash or cumbersome animation and iMovie running at the same time), then that may be a factor.
Additionally, it could be that you are memory constrained. You didn't post a picture of the process list from activity monitor or the memory usage stats, but you probably want to look and see what the memory and CPU usage is and who's consuming what. Some applications are pretty inefficient. For example, if you have iPhoto open and have thousands of images, the indexed metadata and thumbnails are all stored in RAM. iMovie pulls in clip thumbnail sets - (and worse, it has to do on-the-fly transcoding video assets from some cameras that don't encode the video using the parameters it expects to make indexing frames easier). Again, this would show up as periodic spikes in CPU activity for the app.
You seem to have plenty of disk space, that's not likely to be a problem.
Check if Time Machine is running. Time Machine introduces a performance impact, but it's exacerbated by the presence of frequently changed large files (e.g., you don't want Time Machine backing up your video projects while you are working on them).
Lastly, you may consider checking the console for error messages. This might reveal background processes that might be bogging down the system, or things like filesystem/disk errors. If there are errors in the filesystem, when you access certain portions of the disk, the OS and applications can slow down or lock-up as a result.

  • Why does iTunes slow down my whole computer?

I did a quick search for this topic and couldn't find anything, makes you wonder.
Running iTunes on XP is like swimming through molasses.
I understand I'm running Apple software on a Windows platform and they're like at war or something...but seriously, a little professionalism would be nice. I just want to put songs on my shuffle...so I can go jog. I don't want to have to run a marathon before I even get out the door.
Is there some kind of patch, or update, or special download that isn't "iTunes for Windows" that...you know, can make my iTunes actually run on Windows? Thanks.

My PC destroys the minimum requirements for iTunes. Heck all I need it to do is maybe play music and transfer songs to my shuffle...which, I used to be able to do on my thumb-drive based mp3 player on any computer anywhere with zero software. Is there like an iTunes light?

Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok),  and a fresh clean  install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,

The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds
    And
why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
    I have restored this
    from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

  • Can i capture and record a youtube video that is playing on my screen using quicktime?

How can i capture and record a youtube video that is playing on my screen using quicktime?

Hi Paul, QuickTime X can record video and here is the tutorial for you: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5882?viewlocale=en_US. I'm wondering why you don't just download it using some free YouTube downloader, easy and fast.

  • Is there a way we can edit and improve existing youtube videos by using premiere pro? Just simple changes like having professional looking opening and closing credits?

Is there a way we can edit and improve existing youtube videos by using premiere pro? Just simple changes like having professional looking opening and closing credits?

Assuming you do not have access to the "original" video/project and the YouTube video is the only copy, there is a method. Try "YouTube Downloader" which is a free software that allows you to download clips from YouTube as .mp4 files. You can then edit with Premiere, and re-encode again for upload to YouTube. Just keep in mind that you are re-compressing the video so there will be some quality loss. The better the quality of the original, the better the copy will hold up.

  • Safari is slow to open and close. It also slows down other apps while running. Should I reload safari and if so, how do I do so?

Safari is slow to open and close. It also slows down other apps while it is running. How can I resolve this issue?

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. That will revert its settings to the defaults.
If there's no improvement, continue as follows.
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Test.

  • Does 'find your iPhone' use a lot of internet? My mobile data is running out ridiculously fast and I need it to slow down!

Does 'find your iPhone' use a lot of internet? My mobile data is running out ridiculously fast and I need it to slow down! Anyone has suggestions / info?

You should shut down all the apps running in the background and then reset your phone.  Double tap the home button to open the multitasking drawer (iOS 6.X) or the multitasking screen (iOS 7.X)  if you are on iOS 6.X press and hold one of the app icons and wait for the icon's to start to jiggle, just like when you want to delete an app.  Tap the little x that appears in the upper corner of the icons.  Repeat until all the icons are gone.
If you are on iOS 7.X once the multitasking screen is open swipe up on all the app images until they are all closed.  Tap on the home screen to close.
Then press and hold both the Home and Sleep buttons at the same time and wait for the Apple logo to appear then release both buttons.  The phone will restart itself.
If this doesn't help try doing a Reset All Settings reset, you will not lose any data or content or media.  But you will have to reset any setting you turned on or off in Settings.  This will reset all settings back to factory default.  Settings => General => Reset => Reset All Settings.

  • Why haven't I been able to watch YouTube videos for months? :(

I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on this issue I've been having...
I have an older MacBook Pro (bought July 2007) running OS 10.4.11, that hasn't been able to access YouTube or YouTube videos for the past several months. When trying to access the website on Firefox or Safari, the page takes forever to load and I get the "Connection has timed out" error. I've tried loading it on several different wireless connections, none of which should have any firewalls/proxies set. Embedded YouTube videos don't show up (there's just a blank space where they should be), and embedded HD YouTube videos will show the first frame but will not load or play.
I've never had any problems with YouTube before, but didn't turn my computer on between Feb and May of this year (I was traveling). I figured I must have missed some important update. But I'm currently running the most recent versions of Firefox (3.6.9) and Safari (4.0.3), Adobe Flash (10.1), Quicktime (7.6.4), and Java (v9 for OS 10.4). Updating these hasn't helped any. I also reinstalled Firefox entirely.
I don't have any issues loading any other websites, or playing/viewing other kinds of embedded videos, or any other videos. As far as I can tell, my internet browsers don't have any firewalls or blocks set up. Other laptops and desktops on the same wireless connections I've tried can access the site and embedded videos without issue.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what else I could try? I'd love to be able to get back on YouTube...
    thank you in advance!
    -Ann

I understand that you can not access youtube website at all .. this can be due to a variety of reasons ..
what you describe looks like a dns resolution error .. try this
    go to terminal and type
    sudo nano /Private/Etc/Hosts
you will be prompted for your password ..enter it and note that your input won't be visible ..
if all goes well you will see something like this :
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
if you see that try adding these lines EXACTLY AS YOU SEE underneath that page
    74.125.43.103 youtube.com
    74.125.43.103 www.youtube.com
and press control and X together on your keyboard
now back at the terminal type exit and hit return
    reboot your machine ..
    see how it goes
    hope this helps

  • Everything (and I mean EVERYTHING)  is slowing down...

    Hey everyone,
So I've had my G4 iBook for about a year and a half now and everything is slowing down. And I mean, EVERYTHING! When I click an icon on the dock, it takes almost two full seconds before it starts to bounce and load up. When I'm loading a web page and then open a new application, I get the spinning color wheel for about 15-30 seconds before something responds.
Anytime I seem to give it multiple, simple tasks, it starts to freeze up and give the spinning wheel for a bit before everything starts responding again.
I have already wiped the drive and tried reinstalling Tiger. And I have no third party RAM in there. I've reset the PRAM as well.
My optical drive also makes very loud noises, and appears to be working although that seems slow, too. (Maybe it's having trouble reading discs?) For example, when I was coping some files from CD to my hard drive, copying went at a rate at about 1 MB per second, which seems much slower to me than usual. And after I wiped the drive, it took about 7 hrs. to reinstall Tiger completely off the DVD. Is that normal?
Could this be the processor or motherboard? This is my second iBook (the first was replaced by Apple after about 6 major repairs to the motherboard in two years.) I love my iBook and I don't think I'm INCREDIBLY hard on it, so I don't know why I'd be having these kind of problems... any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Doug,
I have 768 MB of RAM. And weird thing, I did try booting off the hardware test disc, and it rejected it, saying it wasn't compatible... but it is the iBook Hardware Test disc, the one that came with the computer... any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • How can you convert and use a youtube video in power point presentation?

Is there an easy way to use a youtube video in power point presentation?  I have 2012 Macbook Pro running OSX 10.9.2 - Thanks!

See if this helps I use keynote for moving background in loop all the time.
in Keynote click view and bring up the inspector box. select the movie in keynote you want to effect first, and on the inspector panel you will see a repeat feature under the quicktime icon tab.
    Hope that helps

  • Copy and paste, does the process slow down if...?

What is the optimal way to copy and paste multiple tasks?
My question is: Does the copy/paste slow down if I have multiple copy/paste processes at the same time?
Or, should I wait until each is done to continue the next task?
I have about 3 hard drives I'm trying to copy and paste to and from each other. Each transfer can range between 30-300 gigabytes
    thanks for your input!

You have to remember that copy and paste means that the OS must cache the data you're trying to copy, and this in turn means that it has to have enough free space to do so.
If your hard drive is almost full, OS X will have to move small files or file fragments around before it can cache chunks of the files you want to copy and paste somewhere. It has to cache them, in case you (or an exterior cause) interrupts the copying and pasting, so as not to damage the files.
Moving files is another matter, since the files don't actually change places, they're just indexed as being moved to a different folder or directory.
Bottom line is, the bigger the quantity of data you want to copy and paste, the more free space you need.

  • Firefox is slow and hangs watching Youtube videos. Safari is OK. What's the word, Developers?

Since late Oct 2011, my Firefox had been hanging while watching videos on Youtube. Any mouse action while a video is playing causes Firefox to hang (spinning wheel).
It turns out that I had caught the beta release of the new Gray Youtube interface - where the backgrounds of all youtube pages are gray.
I got myself back to the old interface by deleting all Youtube cookies.
I no longer have hangs. Page transitions are also much quicker, as was before.
Is there anyone else who has experienced the "new" interface, and problems?
If you do have the new youtube interface, but no problems, then I have more digging to do.
    Update Dec 2, 2011:
I have the problem again now that Youtube has released their "new look" interface to everyone.
The problem is generally slow Firefox responses to mouse actions while watching Youtube videos. Firefox will hang completely 2-4 minutes into any Youtube video. (The video does continue to play a-ok.) FF becomes responsive again when the video ends playing.
Problem doesn't occur when I watch a youtube video right after starting FF after having "quit" it. Problem begins occur after FF has been running for a while (visiting other websites?) Is this a symptom of FF collecting some kind of crud in memory or disk?
My old Safari (3.2.1) doesn't have any problems.
As far as I can see, both Firefox and Safari on my system use the same Adobe Flash Player.
So, this isn't a problem with Youtube, Flash Player, or my system, but a problem with Firefox (3.6.24) !?
Anybody (FF developers) have any ideas? I want to keep using FF!

    Thanks Cor-el.
The problem existed in safe mode as well.
Changing Flash Player hardware acceleration had no effect.
The problem is gone now, after getting the standard youtube interface back.
What I'd like to know is whether any others who are unwitting testers of the new Youtube interface are experiencing problems, and, if not, what is their system? Which versions of Firefox and Flash Player are they using?

  • 10.5 upgrade has made my mac and most programs/dvd/ video slow

i just upgraded from 10.3.9 so i could use a new external HD. So far, it has been slow in all departments (wifi signal is lower than its ever been, programs, downloads, general navigation etc). Games are warpy, DVDs either wont work or if they work they are very warpy/skip frames. Overall my mac with 10.3.9 did very well in all departments, but since upgrading it has been no where near its previous speed and capibility.
    Things i've done so far....
I've run DU many times but system still says its ok. Repaired permissions (which takes forever). Reinstalled 10.5 and archive and installed-nothing. Downloaded all updates available. Reset PRAM.
Should i erase HD and install 10.5 fresh? Does running DU from leopard DVD make a difference? Anything else?
    help!

Hi have you tried starting in safe mode
