Why do i constantly have to render each change!?!

Hi,
I'm pretty new to final cut, my only previous experience of video editing is imovie.
however, im finding editing very tedious, due to constantly having to render almost every change.
i am working with low res AIC clips, 640x480, and they play back fine in the viewer. however, on the timeline, they appear with a red bar above, meaning i cant play them back in real time? but i just did! this is with no effects/transitions, just the plain clip. i can render it and play it back fine in the canvas, but if i add one of the supposedly real time rendering transitions, the ones listed in bold, they get a red bar and need rendering.
now i know my 1.83, 1gb mac mini isnt a monster of power, but surely it can playback footage without needing to render it? surely it can playback a simple cross fade with no need to render? imovie can!
im convinced there's simply something wrong with how im working, please let me know if you have any ideas.
other than this, im finding the power and flexibility of final cut awesome, it opens up a new dimension.

unfortunately, fce doesn't work like imovie in that it will render automatically while you're working. However, a nice way to get around this is to turn your RT settings to unlimited (on the left of the timeline) while you're doing most of the editing, then when you're done turn the settings back to safe and render it all out. This allows you to play it (albeit a little slower) after changing some things without having to render it out all the time.

Why do i CONSTANTLY have to render my vids?

Ok so i've been using FCE since Christmas or thereabouts and have been loving it. However, I've noticed that I need to render absolutly everything that I do. Transitions, audio or video filters, or just moving my clips in the timeline. You name it, I have to render it. I use an older panasonic camcorder (i don't know the exact name) and I have been exporting my vids as FCE xml docs. I use the SD card and a reader for it, and today i even tried using a usb. Anyone got any ideas?? Please!!!

Please, help us to help you:
1) what is the exact camera model?
2) what format(s) it shoots?
3) what preset did you choose in easy setup dialog in FCE?
4) seelct sequence in browser and use get info contextual menu and look what is sequence format there.
Sometimes, "this thing"'s material has to be converted (to a format supoorted natively in FCE to avoid rendering) prior importing in FCE. There is the free utility MPEG Streamclip from www.squared5.com that performs a such job.

CS4; do I have to render each sequence?

I have 7 sequences, and wonder if I have to render each one individually, prior to sending to Encore via Dynamic Link?

If the underlying media (sequences and/or clips) need to be rendered but aren't, FCE will have to render them during export. Not the ideal time to be rendering, as it will at a minimum increase your export time. Plus if you export unrendered material to a QT reference file, the rendered material will be put in the reference file itself. Not what a reference file is intended for.
You should investigate why your second sequence needs to be rendered if the material in sequence 1 did not need to be rendered. Does sequence 2 have a different sequence setting (easy setup)? Did you apply filters to the items in sequence 2? You mentioned adding graphics - if they are non-standard size and you allowed FCE to autoconform the sequence (#2) when you inserted the graphics clips, that could be the cause of the need to render everything.
With FCE, it is best to have all media clips be the same codec (DV or AIC) and frame size - it minimizes problems. Also render as you go along, not at export time.

Why did my upgrade to Maverick result in my not being able to access my Documents in the previous format? Why did I not have the option to change my 'filing' system to use the new 'Tags'? Had reinstall 10.8.5 to access my Documents

Why did Maverick not enable me to access my Documents in the previous format (Grid) and when using the alternative I could not 'clik' to open them. The same applied when I tried to open documents from within my back up disc (LaCie). I had to reinstall 10.8.5 and back up from my LaCie (thankfully) to gain access to all my critical Documents? To deal with this I spent 3 and hlafg hours on telephone to Apple Support ( very helpful - but unable to resolve issues - then 3 hours in Apple Store (again very helpful but only able to assist by clearinng Maverick from my HD and reinstalling 10.8.5. Fortunately LaCie came to the resuce and I was able to back up Mac HD with all my documents but lost about one week of work....!!

10.8.5 is the lates ML edition. I use TM and also carbon copy cloner as my second backup. If I were you and you have a TM backup prior to Mavericks I would try another restore at bootup. You should erase your drive first in that process using disk utitlites and then use TM to put back you apps and files. The other choice is to do an internet recovery and then use TM to restore your apps and files. That should fix the permissions issue. I did the same thing and all was OK including getting my original iPhoto progam (9.4.3), iphoto11 and photos back.

Why do I constantly have to restart my phone daily since the 4.3 update and why are there zero answers or help from Verizon or Samsung?

Ever since the 4.3 update, which I waited until end of January 2014 to download, My phone has been messed up. Some of the problems I solved on my own since Verizon and Samsung both refused to help me. I fixed the charging problem by using an HTC Incredible charger since Samsung's charger is garbage since the update. Battery drain is also a constant issue. Ram is ALWAYS full which should be a good thing but clearing it out completely and killing off all Google apps seems to make my phone all of a sudden fly and work super fast. As the day goes on I am unable to clear all of these unwanted items from being open and bogging down my phone. Most of the apps doing this are the preloaded ones you don't need. I am forced to restart my phone to get the memory cleared at least 2-4 times a day. Verizon tells me this is normal. Samsung hangs up on me when I call. Why do I have to restart this phone just to get it to work like it should after a few hours of being on? Does Verizon care about customers or just money?

Why do I constantly have to restore my iTunes purchases?

Lately, every time I download a new song from iTunes on my iPhone, a few hours later that day I am unable to play the song. It has that little "cloud with an arrow" icon next to it and the song won't play until I "restore the purchase". This is very annoying. Why might this be happening? Thank you!

Why do I constantly have to update my Adobe Flash? I don't think it is working.

Basically, every time I try to watch a YouTube video, the video goes fizzy and says, "You need to update Adobe Flash Player to watch this video." I have updated my Adobe Flash and my iMac, but it still gives me this notification. This is very annoying seeing as I listen to music everyday. Please help!

Which browsers are you using? What happens when you go to the Adobe Flash "About" page (http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/)? Does it tell you what version is installed?
I'd recommend skipping the Flash player all together, and use YouTube's HTML5 video player instead. You can enable it here: http://www.youtube.com/html5 if you want.

Rendering is required usually when applying effects or when the timeline codec / dimension differs from the clip settings. What are yours?

Once you have WordService installed you can create keyboard shortcuts to the menu items in:
System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard shortcuts.

Why do I have to render everything??

I am very new to both Mac and Final Cut Express. I got final cut a few days ago now and a friend of mine has asked me to chop up some video for him.
It was originally a .VOB file so I've used a converter to convert the files into .MOV (QuickTime) and imported them into FCPE. My problem lies with the fact that I have to render each of these clips as soon as I put them in and then again when I apply any effects. I see this as a lot of hassle for such simple tasks, am I doing something wrong?
I used Sony Vegas on Windows before and there was significantly less rendering to be done.

Absolutely. The key to not having to render is to make sure the media you bring into a project and place on the Timeline matches the Sequence settings exactly. So when converting a DVD's VOB files, use MPEG Streamclip to convert to QuickTime DV/DVCPro or to AIC, whichever your Sequence is set for. Usually you'd use QuickTime DV for standard definition footage and AIC for high definition footage.

Once all the footage in the Timeline matches the Sequence settings, you shouldn't have to render anything for playback until you've added enough effects that your system can't keep up with (filters, transitions, composites, layers, etc). Of course, some media like still images are video and will always need to be rendered for output as video.

When I drop anything into the timeline I have to render it to view it.

I am working with 2 sequences in one project. In one sequence I can drop images, video clips, text onto the timeline and I can view it, showing a green line. No problem. I switch to the other sequence and every time I do anything to the timeline I have a red line and have to render each and ever clip to review the work I just did. I don't understand why the two are different. Any suggestions? Thanx

Your clip settings MUST match your timeline settings. If you have DV/NTSC material, you need a DV/NTSC timeline. The frame rate, audio rate and dimensions (4:3, 16:9) all need to match exactly. In Final Cut Pro 6, this is easy, because when you drop a clip into the timeline, it asks if you want to set up the timeline to match the settings of the first clip you drag into it. Click YES and you are ready to go.
However, in FCP 5.1 and earlier, it is a bit trickier.
The most important thing you need to do is properly set up your project from the start, and the best way to do this is to choose a setting from the Easy Setups, located under the Final Cut Pro menu.
Once you do this, you’ll need to create a new sequence. This is because the sequence that is already in your new project is setup for the typical default setting of DV/NTSC, or for the settings of your last project, which might not match what you are currently working with. So delete SEQUENCE 1 and create a new sequence:

I send program change messages from my midi controller and the messages are accepted by mainstage 3 as shown in the midi message window,but i can't make a selection of my pathes even if i have set a program change number for each patch.Why is that happening?
I use a novation SL mki or a KORG Triton Le or a m-audio axiom 49 as midi controllers.The program change messages are transmitted by all the devices i mentioned above and shown as received in the midi messages window of mainstage 3.
Has anyone the same experience?

If they are identical then I can't help you. There is no reason why you would have to render. Which is that you have to render, video or audio or both? The render line is divided is divided into two thin stripes, upper for video, lower for audio.
