Why do I get a 'NO Symbol' during Mac Mini boot?

My 2.4 GHz Macmini4,1 (with the stock 320G HD), model # A1347 running 10.6.8 Mac OS.
Been great for 3+ years since I've owned it... up until today, (Jan. 1st, 2014)
Now the Mac Mini's boot stalls with a "NO" symbol...
I've run 'Disc Utility from an 'Option Boot' FireWire back/repair/recovery drive on the Mac mini and it boots fine to be able to perform the Disc Utility software operations... so my Mini's logic board is good.
Disc Utility says the stock drive is good. Also did a permissions repair while running Disc Utility and it came back with no problems reported.
          Any ideas folks?

There are no external drives connected directly to the Mini in the normal set up. I use an external 2TB drive for my Time Machine B/U's over my Airport Extreme network that's been in use for several years.
The Mini can 'Option Boot' .... and I get the orignal internal HD icon, & the FireWire repair drive icon, they both show as bootable source(s).
Selecting FW Drive the boot continues from FireWire... so my logic board/RAM/Ports all work after booting from a re-purposed OEM 320GB MacBook Pro drive, (to a FireWire Recover/Repair drive).
(I'm thinking the OS needs to be replaced/restored on the internal drive.)

Why do I get a spinning wheel during a youtube dideo when my ISP download speed is over 30 meg?

You may have a 30meg connection onto the internet but a page will only come in as fast as the server can deliver it.  A popular site like YouTube will have very many concurrent users making page requests, and the nature of YouTube's content means that each connection is very data intensive.  If you are trying to access a particular popular video, or if you are trying to access YouTube at a peak time when a lot of other people are trying to access it at the same time, like early evening say, then the server may be struggling to service all the requests hence you may experience a delay in viewing your video irrespective of the speed of your internet connection.

  • Why do new hard drives keep failing in Mac Mini OSX Server?

Why new new hard drives keep failing in Mac Mini OSX server?

If it only failed in 8 days.. I just return the drives back to newegg and get a different brand like western digital. NewEgg has a 30 day return policy.
If you deal with any hard drive manufacturer now, they will give you a refurbished item and not a new item that you are entitled.
    As for testing  hardware....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
even if it still passed Apple tests.. it does not mean logicboard is fine..... it just means it passes the tests.
At this point, If i were you, I would just go back to NewEgg and send back the Seagates letting know they are bad and prefer a different brand such as Western Digital.
Install the Western Digitals and see how long they last. If they fail again in a a short amoung of time, it's the logicboard then.
This is based on experience in dealing with repairs with Macs, PCs, and other various kinds of Servers and computers over the last 10+ years.
In fact, One of my clients who has a Dual 4-core Intel Xeon Server with a Supermicro logicboard, one of their SATA drive ports are bad. Every 4 months like clock work the Mirror RAID Drive would degrade on that port. Then after figuring out that the drives are not necessary bad, I swapped to using another spare  SATA port and since then no problems.

  • Just bought Windows XP laptop and can't get it to see my mac mini

I bought a netbook for easy cheap web surfing, windows xp.
However, really want it to be able to read Itunes and Photos from my mac mini.
I just can't get it to see the mac mini at all.
I have set up Itunes and photos folders for sharing, and on the sharing page
    set up for windows access.
I have seen various forums where it says log in as windows user in the accounts setting, however my accounts setting does not have this option when you open it.
    I am at a loss.
Does anyone know the way to sort this?
    Many thanks

    Hi- can you please clarify:
    1. Is your netbook and your mac mini connected to the same network? How are you connected to the network? WiFi or LAN? Are you using a router?

For Mac App's, you need to go to the > Mac App Store.

  • Getting AHT to work on Mac mini server

I have a intel core 2 duo Mac mini server (macmini4,1), and I'm having sporadic freezing/locking issues. I am trying to run the apple hardware test but it doesn't work, holding down the 'd' key does nothing. If I try single-user mode startup it works fine so there doesn't seem to be an issue with the keyboard. Since this is the server I also don't have an optical drive to go to to boot from the install disc. Why doesn't this work? Is there an alternative way to get this to run that doesn't involve the install disc?

Actually, this problem is only partially solved. I still get "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/mysql/mysql.sock..." when I type 'mysql'. I can access mysql by typing 'sudo mysql', but still get the socket error when connecting via php, so I think I still need to get to the point where I can type mysql without sudo.
Also, I went ahead and installed MySQL 5 with the tar package.

  • Can't get mouse to work with mac mini

    Yes, I replaced the batteries.
Not sure what's going on. I booted the Mac Mini and the message I'm getting is "Searching for mice -0 found" then it will attempt to search again...nothing. I've attempted keyboard commands, but I'm unable to close out the window that asks me to connect to a network. Any guidance would be great. Thanks!

First try and see if the mouse is working. Look in System Preferences > Bluetooth and see if the mouse shows as connected or not. If it does and you are still getting the message, select the mouse then click on Advanced and UNcheck "Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup is no mouse or trackpad is detected."
If the mouse is NOT connected then try creating a clean Bluetooth environment by disabling any and all Bluetooth emmiters whithin 30 or 40 feet such as iOS devices (iPhones, iPads, iPads); other Blutooth keyboards, mice, trackpads; other computers, etc.
Sometimes cycling Blutooth of then on again can help (which is why I always keep a wired mouse and keyboard around). If the mouse was previously paired with the computer, and you have a wired mouse handy, in System Preferences > Bluetooth select the icon for the mouse then Control+Click and select "Remove" from the contextual menu then retry pairing.
The good news is once you get past this glitch, the next time you reboot pairing should go transparently.

  • Mac Mini boots to grey screen w/ symbols

This morning my Mac Mini will not boot to Mac OS - it displays a light grey screen with a thunderbolt and some weird symbol that looks like a wheel/hub with 3 arms - 1 arm is solid and the other 2 are made up of lines perpendicular to the hub.
The Mac Mini was recently upgraded to Mountain Lion - running lastest updates - this was a few days ago. The display to VGA through the mini display port. Using magic mouse and usb keyboard, that's about it.
Any idea what has happened? Or what isn't happening?
    Thanks for your help!

OK - It looks like I'm stuck in target Disk Mode .... I suspect my kid had something to do with this or a stuck key.
Can someone recommend the best wat to get back to normal boot?

  • Should I get an iMac or a Mac Mini?

My iMac just completely broke down after having multiple issues with it and now I'm looking at getting a new Mac. I love the iMac, but I'm not gonna deny that it's pretty expensive. If I get one, I'll just go all the way and get the 27''. Otherwise, I was thinking about getting the Mac Mini and just getting a seperate monitor. I don't do any gaming or anything like that. I use my Mac for internet, movies, editing pictures, and that's pretty much it. My reasoning for getting the Mini is that because it's so cheap, I won't feel so bad about upgrading in a few years. With the iMac, it'll be hard to justify to my wife why I want to spend another $1,000+ in a few years. What do you think?

    Top Mac Mini: $799
Apple mouse + keyboard: $118 ( not included with the mini )
Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive $79.00 ( No DVD/CD drive included with the mini)
    24" LCD around $170
Mini display port to DVI adapter to connect LCD $34.00
    Basic webcam around $40.00
    Total for Mac Mini: $1240
Total for iMac 21": $1199 Including; keyboard, mouse, monitor, superdrive, webcam.
The iMac as a quad core i5 versus a dual core i5 in the Mini.
So in the end, the price is almost the same, but with the Mini you can replace the LCD for under $200 if it is dead in a few years.
Changing the LCD in a iMac will cost at least $500.00
You can also reuse the LCD bought with a Mac Mini with a other computer later on.
    It's up to you!

The discounts are gone. Qualifying purchases result in obtaining a code that lets you obtain USD$100 in software from the Mac App Store.
I believe at least here in the UK you can get a discount on a qualifing Mac, aswell as a £65 GBP gift card for the mac app store, i checked to start off with on the page for the discount, but it only shows the MacBooks and iMac which all have discounts of hundred+
Thanks a lot by the way M, I didn't want to call them until I tried the free way.
