Why do I get an alert saying "Could not initialise the application's security component. The most probable cause is problems with files in your browser's profile directory. How can I solve it??
The full alert is " Could not initialise the application's security component. The most probable cause is problems with files in your browser's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard drive is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the browser and fix the problem. If you continue to use this browser session, you might see incorrect browser behaviour when accessing security features."
This is just started three/four days ago. I need assistance quickly as I can't access any secure sites e.g bank accounts/homepage etc.

The most probable cause is problems with files in your browser's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions." I am not sure how to find or change the profile directory. I have gone to the Options: General: Save files to ...box but it wont allow me to browse to another file and the box remains blank. ideas please!

When I open the application the following alert appears: "Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory." There is a solution on the support site but only for Windows-based Firefox, and I'm a Mac user. I have plenty of room on my hard disk.

Open Finder and use one of these:
* Go > Go To Folder (Shift-Command-G) and in the dialog type: ~/Library
* Open the "Go" menu and hold down the Option key to make the Library appear
You can also use this command in a Terminal window to remove the hidden flag.

Then Firefox comes up, but will not function at all - can enter url address, but will not respond to ANY clicks, so can not go to any site. This link shows how to fix this - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Could+not+initialize+the+browser+security+component

I suddenly encounter this error message from Fire Fox.

I uninstalled the browser and download a new version but it does not resolve the issue.
I know my hard disc has ample space. I do NOT know where to find the Profile directory to fix the read restriction box.

Could not initialise the application's security component
When opening Firefox, I get a message "Could not initialise the application's security component. The most probable cause is problems with files in your browser's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard drive is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the browser and fix the problem. If you continue to use this browser session, you might see incorrect browser behaviour when accessing security features." Firefox then opens but all tabs are marked New Tab and no access can be obtained to the various websites. If I try to sign in to Google, a new window opens marked About:blank. I have wireless connection which is functioning correctly. Please help get my connection working if possible.
Thank you for this detailed explanation - I suspected the answer would be somewhere although I certainly had trouble locating it.
I haven't utilised this answer as I resurrected another laptop and copied folders from the AppData Local and Roaming folders and pasted them into my corrupted machine, which is now working well. However, I am extremely grateful to you for coming to my aid and have bookmarked the reply should it fail again.
I see someone else has the same problem, so your help will doubtless reach even further. Regards -
I have Lotus Notes 8.5 installed on Windows 7 computer.
Firefox 4.0.1 works fine.
But when I change FF as default browser and launch a hyperlink from My mail client I get an error "Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your browser's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the browser and fix the problem. If you continue to use this browser session, you might see incorrect browser behavior when accessing security features."
After this error I can open tabs but no website will work.
But if I close Firefox and reopen it will work.
When Firefox is running, if I click the hyberlink from my mail client, it launches without error message and works fine.
Gave Write access to profile folder. replaced cert8.db etc, but it is not helpful.
I installed Firefox 4 - same.
Installed Firefox 5 beta - same.
Installed Firefox 3.6.17 - error message is there but Firefox keeps working after launch. In Mac OS X v10.7, the $HOME/Library folder is a hidden folder.

Here is the message I get when I open Firefox;
Could not initialize the application's security component. The most
likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile
directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write
restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is
recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you
continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application
behaviour when accessing security features. Plus I can't bookmark anymore.Rename secmod.db (secmod.db.old) in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder] in case there is a problem with the file.
You may have to rename cert8.db (cert8.db.old) as well.<br />
Firefox will create new files. -

When I click OK I get my home page (google), but nothing works: no web sites will open. I have downloaded the new version of firefox and carried out a defraggle without success. This solution worked for me:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Could+not+initialize+the+browser+security+component
The step that worked for me was to locate and delete the cert8.db file. -
