Why do i get an exclamation point when i click on a photo

Using iphoto11 I can see a photo and when i double click on it I get a triangle with an exclamation point in it.

That's an indication that iPhoto has broken the link/file path to the original file. Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

why do I get a black screen when i click on a PDF in a web page? Firefox works as is should.

    Hi,
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Extensions tab. If you have any installed, turn that off, then relaunch Safari. Try a PDF file.
If it's not Extensions, open a Finder window. Select MacintoshHD in the Sidebar on the left. Now open the Library folder then the Internet Plug-Ins folder. If you see any files such as this:
    AdobePDF Browser or Viewer Plug-in
Move it to the Trash, relaunch Safari.

  • Why do I receive the exclamation point when I just change the album name? File goes missing?

I keep all of my itunes media on an attached network hard drive.  Had no problems for months but over the past 45 days I've noticed that material has started to go missing that I know I did not delete.  I have found no malware on my system.
I read a script to tell me all the files that had an exclamation point.  There were some TV shows (an entire season gone missing) and some CDs.
I just did a test and imported a CD.  I then clicked "get info" and changed the name of the album.  Immediately I received the exclamation point and when I tried to find the original file it is gone.  I have no idea where the file has gone to.  I've tried searching, looking around to find it, and I can't.
Why is itunes having this behavior?  How is the file being deleted?  Any other thoughts or ideas of what I should do to stop this?
I've also sent a support request to the hard drive mfg (lacie) but I'm not sure I'll get much help there.
    Thanks.

More info:  I just ran the same test two ways.  One, I had some files on my desktop, run a script to move these files to the "automatically add to itunes" folder, the files move just fine to my external hard drive and to itunes.  The file plays just fine and the "get info" tab shows it is playing the file from the external hard drive where the file was moved to (not copied).  But, as soon as I change the artist name or the album, the file goes missing and I get the exclamation point.
I ran the same test by putting the files on my desktop, but instead of moving the file to the "automatically add to itunes folder" I just double clicked the file to play it.  I let itunes add a copy and organize my folders.  This time, the file would have been copied (not physically moved) and I see itunes is playing the new copied version.  This time, when I try to change the artist name or album, I have no problems.
I've never encountered this before.  Any info?  Thanks.

  • HT201408 My iPad version 6.1.3 will not import Nikon RAW (.NEF) files. Can anyone tell me why I just get red exclamation points and no imports? Discussion areas indicate that RAW files can be imported.

I am unable to import RAW Nikon (.NEF) files into my iPad version 6.1.3. Can anyone explain to me how to import RAW files? I continually get a red exclamation point with RAW files while jpegs have no problem. Other discussions indicate that RAW files can be imported. Many thanks for yur help.

D40X support should be available in ACR 4.1. Availability should be by the end of the week, according to dpreview. See

  • What is black exclamation point when I click on photo?

I upgraded from iPhoto '06. My photos are not the same. Some seem washed out. When I click on some to make them larger I get a black exclamation point, no photo. I can't edit them. They don't sore properly into Events.

Just remember there is no need ever to go into the iPhoto Library via the Finder. Ever.
Here are some of the alternatives.
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS

  • WHY DO I GET AN UNENCRYPTED CONNECTION WHEN I CLICK ON FIREFOX

WHY DO I GET THIS MESSAGE WHEN I OPEN MY MOZILLA BROWSER - (ALTHOUGH THIS PAGE IS ENCRYPTED, THE INFO YOU HAVE ENTERED IS TO BE SENT OVER AN UNENCRYPTED CONNECTION AND COULD EASILY BE READ BY A 3RD PARTY. WHEN I HIT CONTINUE I GET IN - WHEN I HIT CANCEL, NOTHING HAPPENS. AM I SAFE OR NOT

I can work around it - found a forum post that helps, amidst all the other crap and guesses out there. Or perhaps it just really depends on what the root problem is, which may (conceivably) vary from machine to machine.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3074512
For me, if I right click on one of the downloadable trailers and open it in a new tab/window, and then save that once it has been loaded, I can view the trailer. Although about 25% of them come out with distorted aspect ratios and flipped on the x-axis. Very annoying workaround. It is a bit of a shock that Apple managed to screw this up somehow and is not really addressing it very well - calls to support (and from what I read in the forums echo this) result in "Apple does not officially support Quicktime". Bother!

  • Why am i getting error 150;30 when i click on edit

Why am i getting error code 150:30 when I click on edit in Photoshop Elements 8. Says my licencing has stopped working.

Exactly, and if using IE the error code doesn't appear and the media with play straight away, so it does seem to be directly related to Firefox...

  • Why do i get the alert window when i try to email photos from iphoto?

Each time i try to email photos from iphoto i get a window with an exclamation mark over the iphoto logo.  I'm guessing that the email has not been sent but why?

Go to the photo that you're trying to email and double click on it.  If the resulting window has the exclamation mark that means that iPhoto has broken the file path/link to the original file.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
    or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Why do I get an exclamation point in front of one song when I try to download a whole CD? This song won't download.

    Hello enrique a.
Instead of trying to re-invent the wheel on this one, take a look at an article such as this one to help you take care of these exclamations.  Basically, it means iTunes is unable to locate the file on your computer anymore.

  • Fuzzy Exclamation Point when I pick a picture

Hi. I just upgraded to a MBP 15 inch from a G5 iMAC running Tiger 10.4.11. I moved my iPHoto library to an external hard drive, then moved that to the MBP. After openning the iPhoto 09 on the MBP, the library seemed nicely intact. when I look at albums, I see my photos. In the left bottom corner of most of the photos is a small exclamation point. when I click on the pictures to do something with them (crop, change image settings, etc.) the photo is present for split second and then I get a fuzzy exclammation point (black) on a fuzzy white circular field which itself is on a black field.
    Why is iPhoto doing this?
Any explanations and thoughts on how to fix this?
    Thanks, Andy

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try rebuilding the database. Hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the top three options.
    If that fails:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
