Why do I get black bars in my .mov file (AME CS4)?

Hi
I got a .wmv. It has the size 720*540. Everything is fine. No black bars
Except ... I need the file as a .mov.
When I encode it in AME and choose Quicktime I get black bars in the right and the left sides of the movie.
In AME I can see that my source and my output sizes are not the same. The output size is only 720*480, but I can't change it to 720*540.
What can I do to get rid of the black bars?
Thank you for any help you may provide.

As Jim's answer indicates, some codecs enforce specific dimensions. Most relevant here is the fact that codecs intended for television are strictly constrained to the sizes for television standards. You have chosen an NTSC (National Televison Standards Council) codec in the Video Codec menu, which gives a rather strong hint that this is one such constrained codec.

• Why am I getting black bars on the sides of my widescreen assets?

I am importing video, shot and edited 1920x1080p23.976, into Encore. The goal is to burn a DVD from this asset. I've tried exporting the project (from Premiere CS5.5) in every format on the list, and no matter what when I import it into Encore it show up in the monitor with narrow black bars on the sides. The assets are correctly being formatted for 16:9 (non-square pixels), but the video is just not filling the screen. This seems like it should be a simple thing, why can't I get this?
Thanks,
Steve

I'm going crazy trying to get the footage to actually crop. I have sequences imported from my Premiere project vis Dynamic Link. If I go into my quality presets inside Encore CS5 I can setup a top and bottom crop as in Ann's screenshot and then switch to output. It looks perfect. But when I save that as a new preset and apply it to my clips, the cropping does not apply.
I have tried over and over, new presets, double checking over and over and while the preset is applied, the crop does not kick in within Encore monitor or within the DVD preview. pillarboxing (black bars) are still present.
I don't understand why Encore has a cropping feature and then COMPLETELY IGNORES the cropping feature. Am I missing something.
So far all I can figure is to setup a new sequence in Premiere for every Chapter that is set to DV 24p. Then drop in the main sequence which is 1080p and resize it in the motion settings to 45.6% so that it fills a DV frame. At that point I can import that sequence to Encore and it looks fine.
Is this the best Encore can do? I would really rather link up the full 1080 sequences because otherwise I'll have to rebuild the entire thing if I want to make a BluRay.
Does anyone have any other suggestions or know how to get cropping to work on Encore CS5 (Mac).

• Sending videos from iphone 4s to pc. Why do I get black screen but have sound

Sending videos from iphone 4s to pc. Why do I get black screen but have sound?

Ok I checked and unchecked the playback via camera yesterday and I got black screen both times.
I could delete the imovie prefs when I go over there today.
I'll try another FW cable but it worked perfectly for importing but what the heck I've got one I'll try it.
Yes camera was set to play and not record.
Plenty of free space -- 131 GB.
I'm pretty sure it's in NTSC DV format, but it's someone else's computer so it could have been changed by someone screwin' around not knowing what they're doing making changes.

• Stuck with black bars export a movie out of FCE please help :(

Hello, I have 4 hours or so of footage i made in Italy with a FLIP-HD camcorder, it records in 720p.
I put that into FCE 4.0.1 cut out about an hour, added some transitions and music etc etc... anyhow..
now I need to export it, no matter what I do I get black bars around it, it seems to be stretching the video a little bit. I tried setting Sequence -> Settings -> Load Sequence Presets to a bunch of different ones, and I have tried exporting the video with different settings, using MP4, Quicktime, etc etc changing resolution to 720p and tried using Current setting... no dice..
best i was able to get it is almost fill in the screen, but have black (half inch) bars at top and bottom..
FYI this is first time using FCE for me, I used iMovie before with the same exact camcorder and that didnt have any issues, the video filled the whole screen.
Am I missing something obvious?

Here is the sequence setting -> http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v309/Duxa/FCE2.png
and here is are the properties for all the movie clips, there are about 300 of them total (maybe more).. that build that 3 hour movie.
If you look to the right you can see where it shows the film filling the screen but there are thin black bars on top and bottom... i cant get it to fill the whole thing =/

Ask in the ID forum and provide at least some useful info like system specs, what's contained in the files, where they are stored...

• Keep getting black bars (letterbox) on DV AVI export...can't figure it out - suggestions please?

I hope someone can help -- have tried every setting and getting quite frustrated.
I've on may occassions edited a VOB file in Premiere Elements 3 and then did File>export>movie> to get a DV AVI file. Usually the results are fine.
This time I'm using a PAL widescreen DVD, so I've adjusted the settings to PAL and widescreen, but for some reason I'm getting a very distorted letterboxed result. However, if I export to MPEG, it comes out perfectly.
I have no idea if this is the best approach, but how I've always done it without problems. I'm basically trying to get an avi file so I can then convert it in Quicktime Pro to a quicktime file for uploading to my website as QT (and as a flash video using the QT source). The only reason I don't export directly to QT is I always find the outcome really bad converted through PEL vs. in QT.
If anyone has any suggestions why I'm getting my AVI file letterboxed, please let me know. Thanks for any suggestions!

Thanks. I just tried Upper field first, but it didn't fix the problem.
Here are my project settings: Harddisk, widescreen 48kHz
General
Editing mode: DV PAL
Timebase: 25.00 fps
Video Settings
Frame size: 720h 576v (1.422)
Frame rate: 25.00 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV PAL Widescreen 16:9 (1.422)
Fields: Upper Field First
Capture Format
DV Capture
Video Rendering
Here are my export settings:
Microsoft DV AVI
ENtire timeline
Project
DV PAL
720x576 16:9
25fps
Use project setting
Upper field first
I just installed PEL v.7 that I also had, and still getting side black bars! So frustrating. Really appreciate any other suggestions.
Also, just ran the VOB through Gordon Knot program and it says my original aspect ratio is: 1.422
I can convert to MPEG fine, but just need an AVI so I can convert to quicktime. THanks!

• Why am I getting black boxes and lines in Facebook chat area?

I just installed the latest version of Firefox as well as the latest version of my graphics card drivers, and Adobe Flash Player. When I open Facebook, I get black boxes and lines all over the left side of the screen where my chat contacts are. I am wondering why this is happening and if there is a current fix to it, as it is rather annoying. When I hover my mouse next to or over the black boxes and lines, they move and continue to pop up elsewhere but only on the friends/chat area.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

• Anybody else getting black bars on Finder items names?

I never had this before, pretty sure this is a Yosemite issue.
When I enter a folder (and almost always the problem occurs with those on /Desktop) at first the Finder window doesnt show any content,
though the Statusbar shows "1 item". When I close the Finder window and open the folder again a black bar appears over the name of
the Finder item.
Running Yosemite RC on latest high-end rMBP.

I have exactly the same problem like you said.
It seems to be a common issue on rMBP mid-2014 running Yosemite.
Here's another rMBP user having the same problem.
Files won't show, crashes on boot, Finder crashes
BTW, I can't see your pic.

• Why no more clips and just one big .mov file?

I had been working in iMovie and iDVD 4 for some time up until present when I upgraded to iLife 6. One of the things I like about ver. 4 was that the whole movie was saved as a file but there were also the individual clips saved as well. I could use these clips when creating my iDVD project. Now I see that those clips are gone and there's just one big .mov file to drop into my iDVD themes. Why did they do this??? Is there some benefit to this that I'm not understanding? Maybe I don't have something set correctly in the prefs.? Is there anyway around this so that I have control over what part of a movie gets dropped into my iDVD themes?
-Daryl

Thank you so much, Matt. That did the trick. I would've never thought of that. I was beginning to figure that the clips just had to be somewhere else that wasn't obvious to me. I couldn't believe that they would do away with that. Thanks again!

• Why does iTunes create disk errors when deleting movie files?

I use a Macbook Pro, OSX 10.7.5. When I delete movie file from my iTunes library I get disk errors. I need to option boot select the recovery disk and repair the disk. Deleting a movie file I have placed on my desktop with finder does not create any errors. Most of the movie files are created as .m4v movies. They all play just fine with my Apple TV. I have tried turning off the Apple TV and rebooting before I delee files but nothing seems to work.
Any ideas?
Lance

If you let iTunes organise your media folders then that is the way it is. An option would be to change the Media Kind to TV Show which would gather them togther in one folder, but in a different part of the library.

• HT3775 Why will QT 10.3 not open my .mov files after installing Mavericks?

Why do some of my .mov files not open with QT after installing Mavericks?

Were you using Perian before? I'm not sure about this, but I don't think it does anything in Mavericks as the plug-in API changed. I have no idea how to check if Perian is actually doing anything anymore. The developers have ceased supporting it.
Try playing in VLC.

• How do I get iTunes 10 to play movie files as their actual size?

In iTunes (10), I have several iTunes purchases/rentals as well as movie files I've created on my own and converted into .mp4 format. My problem is that I really would like to play these files as their actual size, but can't seem to get iTunes to cooperate. I'm sure there's an easy way to do this and I've tried the quick-keyboard command (command-1), but without luck for both the iTunes official files (m4v) and the .mp4s. Any help is very appreciated.

Or you can set iTunes to always open movies in their own window.
iTunes prefs > Playback.
iTunes 10.5 (on 10.6.8) doesn't have a "playback in separate window" option.
Fortunately, the effectively hidden right-click "Playback Video in Separate Window" option is still available, and this choice holds for future videos.
I can keep my iTunes window on my left monitor and playback videos on my larger, widescreen middle monitor.

• Why is their a black bar on right side of last frame?

Since the most recent update I have black verticl bar on the right side of the last frame in Premiere Pro CC. I have tried cutting, reducting expanding, everything I can think of, but to no avail. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, do you know the remedy? This is causing me to have 3 projects falling behind.

Feel free to tell the team how you feel.
How about letting us have "the teams" "social media" addresses and we can really have a discussion about this.
Isnt that the way it works these days?
Feature Request is just a "hurdle of convenience" and this site should be serving the purpose in its own right.
ie. Users providing (valuable) free opinions from experience ... directly to Adobe. (and the NSA)
I hate the pointless "end of sequence" indicator if my many posts on the matter happened to have slipped by anyone who cares.
To date...still no one defends its inclusion in Premiere Pro. Not even "the team" !
