Why do I have 2 application support folders? Also, can I relocate one or both to free up SSD space?

I'm running Mavericks and imported a time machine backup of Snow Leopard during installation. I am trying to free up space on my boot SSD and was thinking of moving Users and Applications folders to their own partitions or drives.  I'm doing a lot of research on that, but while looking through my system I discovered I have 2 application support folders:
Macintosh HD / Library / Application Support
Macintosh HD / Users / [home folder] / Library / Application Support
Is this supposed to like this?  Did I create a redundancy by migrating files from Snow Leopard?
I wouldn't care so much, but Macintosh HD / Library / Application Support is 35GB, and both folders contain a Final Cut Studio folder.  The one in the first path is 18GB.
Would it be safe to relocate these huge folders? Or better yet the library that contains them?

Yes.

No.

No and definitely no. Deleting one or another of these library folders would be a very bad idea and would screw up your Mac a lot. In general it is a good idea not to mess around with system files. These files are necessary for running your apps. These two Libraries are at different levels in terms of your OS and do different things.

  • Too many "Library/Application Support" folders ?

be gentle - i'm an absolute MAC newbie ...
my daughter has been happily using photoshop (Adobe Creative Suite 2) on a PowerBook G4 for nearly a year (OS X 10.4.8).
recently photoshop has stopped working. when it launches, it comes up with two error messages:
"One or more files in the Adobe Application Support folder, necessary for running Photoshop, are missing. Please run the Photoshop installer and re-install Photoshop."
"An error has been detected with a required application library and the product cannot continue. Please reinstall the application."
also GarageBand complains that "... the Instrument Library is invalid. GarageBand expects a valid Instrument Library folder in /Library/Application Support/Garageband. Please choose a valid instrument Library folder or quit and re-install GarageBand."
so it seems there's some confusion on this system about the "Application Support" folder(s)
after a bit of googling i tried some uninstalls and reinstalls of CS2, but got the same result.
as i was doing some backing up of user data before launching in to the Disk Utility (to do some stuff advised by Apple support), i found three "Library" folders which have an "Application Support" subfolder:
    1. /Library (which seems to be where shared/common bits of apps install)
    2. /Users/<user>/Library (which seems to be where user specific bits of apps install)
    3. /Kate/Library (i can't imagine why this is there!)
this last one intrigues me. the contents of /Kate is exclusively user data files except a subfolder named "Library". i wonder if it's been accidently dragged/copied there - and if it was, what damage that might do ?
how many "Application Support" folders would normally be on a system where everything (I think) has been installed with default settings ?
    TIA

The first line of defense when a system has a problem is to VERIFY the boot drive, then repair it from single user mode or your emergency boot drive (not an older DVD).
When I am working on a project, I do a smart update of my backup sets every AM first thing. Two or three sets should work, a rotating set of two for daily, one for weekly, and even a monthly backup. And always a working backup of the system, plus one that is never touched that is used only for emergencies AND one that has the prior OS version (such as 10.4.7 in case I run across something that doesn't seem to work I can test it on a clean system clone, or the older version).
Doing backups just gets into your blood after being around computers for decades and doing some beta testing or just running into the normal gottcha and glitches that come to visit.
There are tutorials, ebooks (MacFixit posted one to subscribers yesterday that covers the basics of troubleshooting), "Missing Manual" series... Apple's MacHelp 101 and of course, Google.
Because there are multiple errors it would seem that a folder or more is missing, moved, or the directory (index) for the drive is at fault. Even if Disk Utility doesn't find a problem, Disk Warrior might. The backup + erase + clean install and restore is the surest way (and shortest often times). Even after "fixing" a problem, I don't fully trust that there aren't corrupt files or something so I like to restore from a clean backup, and lacking that, clean install.
Which is why when you do have the system reinstalled and working, backup (a disk image is fine and can be small system only or as large as needed) to another disk drive so you can restore and have backup and emergency when needed.
Before updating your system, make sure to backup the system, that it works, and use it to repair your normal boot drive before applying an update or installing software. The combined updaters are large but excellent mini-OS reinstall and good to have on hand. Sometimes those small software updates don't go well for some reason but rerunning the combined update does - IF there aren't any pre-existing problems!
If you or your daughter wants easy access to a folder or file, just create an alias and put it where it will be handy, that is the normal supported method. Leave folders where they are.
Instead of creating a new account, you could also rename the home "Preferences" folder, reboot and let the system create a new folder.

  • Application Support folders disappeared

Finder has been hanging recently, causing other apps (and sometimes the whole system) to become unresponsive.  i googled for fixes, and followed a suggestion to reboot into Safe Mode, navigate through a few directories in Finder, then restart normally.  having done this, i now find that Chrome's settings and bookmarks have been wiped and my contacts and calendars have gone AWOL; it seems that most of the subdirectories under ~/Library/Application Support have disappeared, taking my Calendars, Contacts, etc. with them...
i have a Time Machine backup from which i'm about to go and retrieve these folders, but this does not inspire confidence!  what happened?  why did Lion delete all my Application Support folders and how can i prevent this from happening again?
many thanks indeed.  i'm on a 2011 MBP running 10.7.3.

those were as detailed as the instructions in the suggestion i followed:

nothing more complex or precise than that.  i didn't make any further change whilst in Safe Mode.
i'm not sure if it's normal, but whilst waiting for the machine to boot into Safe Mode, there was a progress bar underneath the spinning progress indicator.  it took a good few minutes to boot.
then, when i restarted normally, once again there was the was progress bar underneath the spinning progress indicator, though it completed and booted much faster, and my Login Items opened as normal.  everything appeared to be fine, bar the missing directories.
I still can't figure out why it would want you to go to a few folders in Finder and yet not make at least some subtle change or check the contents of some folder. It seems a very strange 'fix' or even diagnostic test.
As for the progress bar, that sounds like it may well have been loading the latest Firmware update. I would be thinking that your original idea of taking them from your backup drive would definately be your best option at the moment.

  • How can I tell my apps where their Application Support folders are?

Hi there- I thought I had this solved with an earlier post but looks like I don't.
I just installed an 120GB SSD in addition to my 500GB HDD in my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion. I did the following things:
    1. Carbon copied my entire HDD onto the SSD (everything but the /Users and /Applications folders)
    2. Booted from SSD and changed the "user folder location" to point to the users folder I left on the HDD (in System Preferences+Users and Groups+Advanced Settings.)
    3. All of my apps showed up as brand new or were malfunctioning in some other way. I've figured that this is because they can't find their Application Support folders (which may be in the Users directory on the HDD) Upon seeing that my Apps didn't have any data, as in, they thought they were brand new, I moved the Applications folder to the SSD too. This doesn't solve the problem.
    4. I then set up a symbolic link on the HDD that points to the actual folder on the SSD. Still nothing.
But the apps are all missing their Application Support files. My EyeTV thinks it's brand new and unactivated, my screen saver program is confused, Audition won't even open, and so on and so forth. My concern is not the " You are launching this app for the first time" message. I'm fine with that- I only care about the fact that none of these apps know where any of their files and settings are and I can't tell them.
How can I make these apps (or Mac OS) know where all these files are? I didn't think I messed with too much...

I justlokerd on my iPod and I can't find it eithr.  It does appear in the App store on the computer. The App store on the iPod will not allow you to purchas and app that is not compatible with your iod mode/iOS.

  • On shared home network computer, why do I have TWO home folders?

When I connect to my G5 (from my Intel iMac) on my wireless network the first window that comes up contains folders for the G5, public folders for each one in the family, and my home folder (accessible) on the G5 (which contains folders for my Desktop, Documents, etc.),
When I click on the G5 folder and go to Users, I see what I'm assuming is a duplicate of my home folder, but it has a red circle with a minus sign and I am unable to access it (even when tI try to change permissions via the Get Info window).
My question is why do I have duplicate home folders and should my accessible home folder be INSIDE the Users folder? What do I do about the home folder whose permissions I can't seem to alter?

Don't know, but you might get an answer posting to the Getting Online and Networking forum.

  • Upgraded to Lion - where are the Library & Application Support folders ?

Where are the Library & Application Support folders that were available in Leopard 10.5.8 ?

They're in the same location as before, but you need to use a method such as choosing Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and providing ~/Library/Application Support/ as the path.

    1. They’re still there, but hidden.
    2. Open your home folder, choose Show View Options from the Finder’s View menu, and check the box to show the library.

I have 2 iCloud accounts. Can I delete one account so I can make use of additional space I purchased for the secondary account? Also iPhoto seems to only connect to the primary account? How do I send files to the secondary account?

Both accounts are completely independent from each other. In order to use the space that you have purchased for your secondary account, you must change it to become your primary account. Yes, as you said, services like photo stream only work with the primary account. Unfortunately, there is no comfortable way to just transfer data from one account to another one, but you can do it via a third party application e.g. via Dropbox: e.g. for photos: photos stored with your current primary account > manual transfer to dropbox > after you made your secondary account to the primary account,  transfer the photos back to your new primary account etc.

Were you able to reset the account's password ? If not then how did you try to get it reset e.g. http://iforgot.apple.com (which would have sent it to the rescue email address if you have one on that account) ? You can also try contacting iTunes Support in your country to get it reset : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
And no, accounts can't be merged nor content transferred between accounts.

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!

Correct.  When you purchase devices, they would have stated the OS they needed to work, on the box.  This can be overlooked, but it is very important to check when purchasing.
You current OS, is so old, that they technology build into the new devices, is not something your OS understands.  It didn't exist when your OS was created, and therefore you need to upgrade the OS to work with the newer technology of these devices.
10.6 software is not downloadable.  You must purchase a DVD disc.  You can order it from the on-line apple store
