Why do I have a Gray Screen on my 4s after updating to iOS 8.1.2??

I updated my iPhone 4s to the new operating system, iOS 8.1.2 (12B440), and now have a grey screen (no color). No, the grayscale is not on. The color comes in and out at times but only for seconds at a time. Could it be the new update? And if it is, how can I go back to the original iOS 7????

Sorry, but you can't downgrade the iOS.
To find out if this is software related, set it up as new device without using a backup afterwards:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
If the screen is back to normal after that, restore from the backup. In case the gray screen comes back again, your backup contained damaged data and you'll have to start again without the backup data.
In case the gray screen is still on after setting it back to factory settings, your device needs to be checked by an Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple:

Try restarting your iPhone 5 by holding down the on/off and the home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo. Then give it a try.

I found a solution that worked for me. I had this same problem and I feel like I tried everything. No matter how many time I synced, the songs appeared to be on my phone, but they would just get skipped over if I tried to play them ("ghost" songs). The answer is not checking and unchecking artists/playlists/etc in iTunes. The phone still thinks the songs are there so it won't sync them to the phone. Here's what to do: go to Settings --> Music and then make sure "Show All Music" is off. Then go to the Music app and try to play through your songs. Now, when a song is skipped over it should no longer appear in the iPhone's library. Once all songs are skipped (could take a few minutes depending on the size of your library), the "ghost" songs will disappear. On the next sync iTunes will put them all back on the phone. New iPad? Some of them have screen issues. I just returned one that had a gray strip down the left side. Actually, I had two like that. It was difficult for me to find a new iPad without screen issues. I actually never did. I gave up at new iPad #6. It's probably best to just bring it to an Apple store (if possible) to have it looked at. They might just swap it for you.

When you see the old number come up in the suggested choices look for a blue arrow to the right of the Contact. Tap the blue arrow and then tap Remove from Recents.

Try closing the Mail app via the taskbar and see if it works properly when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.

If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

I have the gray screen problem when it boots to the white apple and spinning wheel, but when I tried safe booting and doing the fsck thing I think I only made it worse, because it now starts, the safe mode progress bar comes on, (no matter if I press any keys or not) and after a minute shuts down again by itself. I also tried the command option, p, r thing and that did not work either, only brought me to the gray screen with the white apple, spinning wheel, and bar, and it promptly shut down. I am thinking more and more that I need the disk, but im not sure I have it. is it possible to order a new one online or is there another thing I can try? there is not an apple store nearby, and ereasing my data is not an option.
Also Im not sure what my exact opporating system is, but I did buy and download mountainlion in August so It is pretty new

A bit of advice for you as a new user. Please refrain from making assumptions and using hyperbole. Both get in the way of providing useful support. Not "everyone" has tried the basics, let alone know what they are. That's why they're here. These first steps in troubleshooting often fix the issue being asked. Restore iPad to Factory Default; do not restore from backup. It may be the cause of the problem.
Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings
