Why do I have fan noise after OS 10.7.5 update?

I used to have moaning sounds coming from my Mac Pro (Quad Core, early 2008) when I was in motion graphics programs, or in NetFlix. But ever since I updated to OS 10.7.5 3 days ago, the fan moaning is incessant. Help! I just spent $200 on an old geezer "official Mac" technician, who came to my home office and spent 2 hours doing DiskWarrior!
I am so busy right now, I can't stop to take the tower to a local authorized shop. Will the noise sink my CPU? What is causing it? Is it a glitch in OS 10.7.5? Or do I need new fan(s)?
Anyone hear complaints of sudden incessant noise other than mine?

I used the following:
Copy and past the following in terminal followed by your password when asked for:
sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
Note that if you've got anything listed in the Spotlight control panel in Privacy, it will be deleted.
To turn it back on (which I haven't tried yet since I don't use Spotlight):
sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
When Spotlight is frantically reading everything and indexing it, a lot of CPU % is used, and the HD is being exercised too. That generates heat and could be the cause of the increased fan noise when your Mac Pro speeds up its fans to try to protect itself. 10.7.5 seems problematic in this respect and since your noise problem started after the 10.7.5 update, the two might be connected. Apple tends to run a Mac Pro's fans very slowly to keep the machine quiet, so any speedup would be noticeable.

I'm planning to buy macbook pro 13 inch 2.9ghz. But, I heard macbook pro does have fan noises which I don't like. I heard that the retina version doesn't have fan noises but I think they're just to expensive. HELP MEE!!

You cannot hear the fans when they are running at their minimum speed (about 2000 RPM). If you put a load on the system, e.g., by running a graphically intense program, the fans speed up and you can hear them. How "loud" it is is subjective. Short burst of fan noises after sleep?

Does anyone else experience this and is it normal?
I have a brand new Dual 3GHz Mac Pro. When I wake it from sleep (after a few seconds or a few hours, makes no difference), there is a sudden short (about 1 to 2 seconds) burst of fan noise, kind of like a short rev, then when monitor kicks in computer goes to almost silent again, part from a slight hum.
Does this sound normal, can Mac Pro users quickly sleep and then unsleep your computer and tell me if you expreience this?

The fans are controlled by routines in the operating system that monitor all the temperature sensors. These routines also send periodic signals to the control circuitry saying everything is under control. In the absence of these periodic signals (e.g. the temperature routines aren't running yet because the boot procedure isn't complete, or the system has frozen), the circuitry switches all the fans to full speed, to be on the safe side, and prevent overheating. This will happen when power it turned on, or the system has just woken up. It may also happen when running hardware tests, when certain parts must be tested at full speed without interruption.

Fan noise after HD Upgrade

Hello:
I have a 12" 1 Ghz G4 Powerbok in which I have repalced a failing HDD, one 60 Gbyte drive for another. Once I've put it back together again I have a steady fan noise. Always on - from power-up, before the chime, to shutdown, except when sleeping.
I have no spare parts left over after re-assembly and I was not required to force or stress any parts in the process of putting it back together.
Any Ideas ?

I was able to return both my hard drives to the store....no problems.
Interesting what they told you about the Scorpio. I can only tell you that I've had no problems at all since I changed.
The vibration and humming sound were very annoying....I can certainly relate to your dilemma.

Fan noise after update

I have a mac mini intel 1,83Ghz with 1Gb ram since November 2006. The RAM was set up by the vendor.
Everything was fine since the beginning of this week: update, new programme, i don't know? but now the fan seems to work everytime. No special use: internet, mail, some series...
I check the cpu usage:ok ; the temperature: about 58 °C ; disk, etc ok
So what? I see this problemon on a lot of forums but no solution...
Please give me some help
PS: I never touch/move or open my mac mini since received (no fan noise at that moment)

Well, I seem to have fixed the problem, although I did a couple things simultaneously, so I'm not sure which actually cured it. I checked for updates and downloaded a macmini firmware update. I followed the instructions for installing the firmware, which involve shutting down the machine and then holding the start button down til the light bar comes on solid after flashing. While it was off, I also unplugged everthing and let the Mini sit for 30 seconds. I'd read that this will reset the System Management Controller, which among other things, controls the fan. (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446) When the machine came back up, the fan was quiet. Now I also picked it up while it was disconnected, so there's a chance that a loose connection might have reseated just enought to work again for a bit. We'll see.

Fan noise after an hour of use

I was installing a package which took approx. an hour. At the end of the hour, I could hear the fan noise. That's the only time I have heard any noise (for that matter). Is that normal. I have a Mac Pro 15" Retina. Thanks!

After installing a package Spotlight activity increases, and it's normal for that to cause temporarily elevated temperatures. The fans should quiet down in a few minutes.
If you suspect something abnormal read: Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity

Fan noise after memory Upgrade

Hello,
I have a Mac Mini and I upgraded it to 2GB of memory and now I got a fan noise constanlty going. I have tried to reset the SMC and I left the machine without any cables plugged in for about 45 minutes after my second attempt.
I had upgraded the machine before and this never happened.
Any clue as what I got to do or what may be wrong?

Fan noise after graphic card changed - Qosmio F10-101

Two months ago i have had my graphic card changed from nvidia fx 5700 to nvidia geforce go 6600.
from my laptop toshiba qosmio f10-101. After changing the old graphic card there is a fan noise that starts and stops every 2 minutes , that it drives me crazy every time i'm hear it.
Can somebody tell me if this noise is natural and if he/she knows if the specific card is noisy in every laptop? or If there are any ways to disappear this noise or increase in the maximum speed the noise.??

Fan noise after upgrade ram and OS

hello there
i have a problem with the fan noise. it's extremely high. i'm running a MacBook Pro 15" and i had OS Tiger. i bought an iphone4S so i upgraded the OS to snow leopard. all running fine!
then two weeks ago i decided to upgrade ram to have a more perfect machine, and i upgraded from 2GB (1+1) to 4 (2+2). the brand is kingston
after that there is a persistent fan noise. it went worse when i went to my windows partition. then it sounded like an helicopter... i updated all software, bootcamp drivers and everything and i don't know what this noise can be... any help?

I did exactly the same as you. The ram I installed is Integral IN2T2GAXNEX2, 2x2 Mbs.
Unlike the original ram which has manufacturer's & serial numbers (as seen in system profiler) this new ram does not.

The fans now run at nearly 2000 rpm all the time, from boot, although the temperature is only 19ºc.
Has anyone added actual Apple Ram and found the same problem? (some sites claim this Integral ram to be identical to Apple Ram).
Another site suggested non apple ram may lack a temperature control chip thus inducing the fans to run just in case.

X 200 fan noise after upgrading to windows 7 32 bit

last month iv'e upgraded from win vista 32 bit to win 7 32 bit, ever since (that day exactly!) i did that i'm facing a lot more fan noise then before the upgrade, noise that bothers me.
it seems like the fan is starting to work more often then before, and besides that it never goes into idle but continue to work all the, regardless of the load on the computer.
until now iv'e tried to update anything possible (including bios) , i have reinstalled the win 7 with a clean install (the first time i used the update option) and again updated everything possible, that didn't solve the problem.
iv'e also tried to change the power manger options regarding the fan and cooling policy. the only thing that made any change is the "reduce noise dynamically" but that option also changes the overall performence of my system,so that's not a solution for me.
iv'e also read in a couple of places that turning down the wifi or access connection helped someone, but not for...
any ideas what to do next?

i've got the same problem. upgraded from a silent windows xp to windows 7, and there's the noise.
have you found any solution to tune it down?

Excessive fan noise after 10.7 install

After the installation of 10.7 Lion, I am getting excessive fan noise... it keeps turning on, then off. InterCheck seems to be the cuplrit, what ever that is.

I don't know what InterCheck is, but expect your fans to come on and the system to work hard for 30-60 minutes after the upgrade. Spotlight will likely re-index your files.
It should calm down after an hour or so.

Fan Noise after Security Update

I somehow posted this in the wrong forum, so am reposting here.
I installed the latest security update to 10.4.8 and ever since, my fans have been going off on a regular basis. They can get pretty noisy sometimes, but fortunately, don't stay on for too long. Anyone else having this problem?

Yes, I'm having this issue as well. I've posted already here but have not had replies.
A bigger problem for me is that my G5 will not sleep now. As soon as it enters sleep mode, it revs right back up again to the login window.
This all started after installing the new Security Update.
And yes, I did repair permissions.
I've restarted several times - since the computer won't stay in sleep, I just shut down.
Help!

Fan Noise after installing security update

I just installed Security Update 2010-001 Client (Leopard), which was released yesterday (1/19/10). Shortly after restarting, my computer's fan began - it is quite noisy. In 9 months of owning this machine, I've never once noticed the fan. Obviously, it is related to the security update: either it brought a malfunction to light, created a malfunction, or changed the software control over the fan. Has anyone else noticed this? Possible resolutions? Thanks.

Hey. The fan noise is really annoying me. Im not really sure what I did or what update was installed but it started a month or two ago and it's loud!
It seems like tilting the macbook affects the noise, like if i tilt it back the noise seems to stop but if I move (if its on my lap) it just seems to keep going!!
Does anyone know anything that can help??

Fan Noise After SMC Reset

I apologize if this question has been covered in another post; however, I looked around for quite a while and didn't see anything.
I suddenly started having issues with my iSight today. I searched troubleshooting and was instructed to reset my SMC. Which I did. As soon as I powered my computer back on, though, the fan started blowing like crazy. It's far too loud for normal use! (My iSight works again.)
Can anyone help me return the fan noise to normal. Everyone else says to reset the SMC... but that's what caused my problem in the first place. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Be sure that after resetting your SMC you are not pressing the power button while plugging the power cord back in to your iMac. If you did, you need to reset your SMC again
