Why do I have so many "backup" files?

I recently caved and bought Pages for iOS to use on my iPhone, and hopefully an iPad in the coming weeks. However, I've noticed that for each of the roughly 40 documents I have saved in iCloud, on my phone I see files for both "XYZ" and "Backup of XYZ". Is this normal or not? What can I do to get rid of these files while still having access to Versions for the documents when I am on my Macbook?

Yes you can delete them, but you will be asked to authenticate to do so. And it is possible that they will simply start being created all over again. This can be the result of either of two things:
1. The asl log process itself is having a problem (it is so prone to problems that I have not updated my working drive to 10.5.6, but decided to stay at 10.5.5; I have an extremely clean install of 10.5.6 on another drive)
2. You have some other process that is going mad and sending out continuous log notes
For the second problem try launching Console from your Utilities folder and take a look a look at the Console log, watch it in real time and see if there are constant messages appearing, and what is sending them. Then you can start figuring out what needs to be fixed. For instance, one fairly common problem involved software installed by Canon for one of their popular scanners which constantly, several times a second, sent an error message. There are many other possible sources for such a problem.
For problems caused by asl itself, see:

If you do a Google search on ASL you'll find many similar reports.

  • Why do I have so many log files?

    I ran GrandPerspective on my iMac because my HD is pretty much full and it shows me that I have about 140 gigs of log files (about 380 files x 365 megs). That's half my HD. Why do I have so many? Can I delete them and how? I ran Onyx and Cocktail but they are still there. They are all in the private/var/log/asl directory.
    Thanks

  • I just transferred "all movies" to "My Passport" hard drive.  Several images of the same clips appear.  Is each image a valid clip?  Why do I have so many?

    I just transferred "all movies" to "My Passport" hard drive.  Several images of the same clips appear.  Is each image a valid clip?  Why do I have so many?

    Okay. Trash the stuff on the External Drive.
    All Movies is not a place - it's a list. Specifically its a list of all the movies on your Mac. Never interact with anything in iPhoto via these All Movies or All Images lists.
    In iPhoto select the Movies you want to move and go File -> Export. Set the Kind: to Original and export from iPhoto to this external drive.
    Then once you're sure the export has gone correctly, erase them from iPhoto.

  • Why do I have so many duplicate photos on my iPad?

    Somewhere along the line, the photos that I have on my iPad 2 got duplicated and all the event names were removed.
    I think this happened when I upgraded to Lion and iOS 5
    If I connect my iPad to my iMac, and select the iPad, I don't see any duplicates of my photos on the iPad
    If I look at all my photos on my iMac, I don't see any duplicates either.
    Why do I have so many duplicates on my iPad (so I donb't do this again!) and is there a way to easily remove them (if I do happen to cause the duplication again!) ?
    Regards,
    Jim P.

    Use iCloud or iTunes to back up your phone. Then go online and delete all contacts from backup assistant.(it keeps them in the trash.) Then reset your phone and reload from your backup, then use backup assistant or Verizon cloud. Sounds like a lot but it doesn't take long.

    Hi, EJ13.
    I see you are having issues with backing up you iPhone and have tried a couple troubleshooting steps.  There are a couple more steps I could recommend in the article below.

    Why do I have so many shared computers listed in finder since upgrading to Yosemite? The shared list grows. Why?

    It is a bug. Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

    File Sharing failed between my Mavericks iMacs.  The console logs showed that the target iMac saw the ntlmv2 protocol as unknown to the kdc.  I fixed it by enabling Windows File Sharing on the target Mavericks iMac.  I had tried disabling SMB on both iMacs and leaving AFP on, but then nothing happened when I tried to connect.  Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

    When you enable file sharing you need to have either SMB (Windows) or AFP (historically Apple-native) file sharing checked. The default in Mavericks is SMB, and not AFP.
    If you uncheck both, then the system will turn off file sharing. Apple supports the use of both SMB and AFP connections in Mavericks, so with only AFP enabled you should have been able to establish a connection, but there could be a small bug or configuration-specific snafu that you're encountering.
    With AFP enabled only, try pressing Command-K in the Finder to open the Connect To Server dialogue, and in here enter the address to the system using afp:// as the protocol, such as the following (the name can be looked up in the Sharing system preferences):
    afp://my_imac.local

  • Why do I have so many duplicate contacts on my iPhone?  I use Verizon backup assistance

    Why in the world are my contact at 14,000 and have so many duplicate contacts.  How in the world do I get ride of these contacts?  Its the stupid Verizon Backup assistance that created all these contacts.  This has occurred since I upgrade to a new IPhone

  • Backing up ipad/iphone to new computer.  Have old computer backup files.

    I have a new computer and want to backup my ipad and iphone to the new computer without losing data and settings.  I have complete backup files from the old computer including the previous ipad and iphone syncs.  I have set up itunes on the new computer and transferred over my music.  Can I transfer over the mobile device backup files to the new computer so the sync on the new computer is as if I am to syncing to the old computer?

    Thanks for the info.
    I have 2 files from from old computer (one for iphone and one for ipad) from the folder callled:  users\xxx\appdata\roaming\applecomputer\roaming\mobilesync\backup\.  If I just copy those over to the new computer and put them in the same subdirectory will the ipad/iphone recognize these when I try to sync?
    I also have the old itunes subfolder called Mobile Applications and am wondering if I just copy that over to the new itunes subfolder called itunes\media whether it will automatically be recognized?  Note: I am able to access the backup but unable to do anything in itunes in the old computer (such as consolidating or merging files)
    Are these all of the files associated with the ipad/ipod backup that would have been stored on the old computer?

  • Why do I have 17.8GB sleepimage file?

    Recently I have used Disk Inventory X to get a rid off some of my old files. The thing is that I was shocked when I found a sleepimage folder with 17.8GB sleepimage files. Why does my MB Air collecting that much of data? Usually it has to be about 2-3 GB.

    There is only one sleep image file.  It is by necessity slightly bigger than the amount of RAM that you have.
    The other files are swap files.  You must be running some big applicatoons to have that much swap file space in use on a machine that has 8 GB of RAM.

  • Restore database to another host - I have only rman backup files

    Hi all,
    The PC where Oracle was installed is crashed.
    I have only the RMAN backup pieces in other computer.
    I want to restore/recover this RMAN backup to other PC.
    I know the commands, restore database, recover database,
    but I've always used these commands with rman into existing rman
    user. Now, I don't have anything. I have only the RMAN backup files.
    How can I restore/recover database to other PC using these files?
    The steps are? create other database, create a rman user, register
    the rman backup files in this new rman, and restore these files
    in this new database already created with the same name?
    thank you!!!!

  • Why do I have to convert t2i files to pro res in fcp x? What difference does it make ?

    Hey Guys,
    Just wondering why do I have to convert canon t2i files to prores in fcp x? What difference does it make ? I'm able to edit in fcpx the files that have just been imported diectly in. Does it cause any problems in export?
    Thanks so much,
    Jamie

    I am not familiar with Canon files.
    I assume that they are like AVCHD which are really designed only as a delivery format and not for editing.
    Though they can be edited it is concidered better to convert them to ProRes 422 for editing.
    Though nothing terrible will probably happen if you don't convert them, you are likely to get improved results and faster rendering of complex effects with the converted media.
    The best thing is to do 2 very short (sub - 5 minute) identical test projects adding lots of effects etc. with both methods and then you will be able to determine which technique suits you.

  • Why do I have so many Users and Groups (RDN) on my computer?

    I have had trouble viewing certain documents. I've been told I don't have permission. When I checked the Users, I find a list of Users and Groups that I'm unaware of. My computer should only be used by myself and my daughter. How do I know which Users to

  • What have "Too many open Files" to do with FIFOs?

    Hi folks.
    I've just finished a middleware service for my company, that receives files via a TCP/IP connection and stores them into some cache-directory. An external program gets called, consumes the files from the cache directory and puts a result-file there, which itself gets sent back to the client over TCP/IP.
    After that's done, the cache file (and everything leftover) gets deleted.
    The middleware-server is multithreaded and creates a new thread for each request connection.
    These threads are supposed to die when the request is done.
    All works fine, cache files get deleted, threads die when they should, the files get consumed by the external program as expected and so on.
    BUT (there's always a butt;) to migrate from an older solution, the old data gets fed into the new system, creating about 5 to 8 requests a second.
    After a time of about 20-30 minutes, the service drops out with "IOException: Too many open files" on the very line where the external program gets called.
    I sweeped through my code, seeking to close even the most unlikely stream, that gets opened (even the outputstreams of the external process ;) but the problem stays.
    Things I thought about:
    - It's the external program: unlikely since the lsof-command (shows the "list of open files" on Linux) says that the open files belong to java processes. Having a closer look at the list, I see a large amount of "FIFO" entries that gets bigger, plus an (almost) constant amount of "normal" open file handles.
    So perhaps the handles get opened (and not closed) somehwere else and the external program is just the drop that makes the cask flood over.
    - Must be a file handle that's not closed: I find only the "FIFO" entries to grow. Yet I don't really know what that means. I just think it's something different than a "normal" file handle, but maybe I'm wrong.
    - Must be a socket connection that's not closed: at least the client that sends requests to the middleware service closes the connection properly, and I am, well, quite sure that my code does it as well, but who knows? How can I be sure?
    That was a long description, most of which will be skipped by you. To boil it down to some questions:
    1.) What do the "FIFO" entries of the lsof-command under Linux really mean ?
    2.) How can I make damn sure that every socket, stream, filehandle etc. pp. is closed when the worker thread dies?
    Answers will be thanked a lot.
    Tom

    Thanks for the quick replies.
    @BIJ001:
    ls -l /proc/<PID>/fdGives the same information as lsof does, namely a slowly but steadily growing amount of pipes
    fuserDoesn't output anything at all
    Do you make exec calls? Are you really sure stdout and stderr are consumed/closed?Well, the external program is called by
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(commandLine);and the stdout and stderr are consumed by two classes that subclass Thread (named showOutput) that do nothing but prepending the corresponding outputs with "OUT:" and "ERR" and putting them into a log.
    Are they closed? I hope so: I call the showOutput's halt method, that should eventually close the handles.
    @sjasja:
    Sounds like a pipe.Thought so, too ;)
    Do you have the waitFor() in there?Mentioning the waitFor():
    my code looks more like:
    try  {
         p = Runtime.getRuntime.exec(...);
         outshow = new showOutput(p.getInputStream(), "OUT").start;
         errshow = new showOutput(p.getErrorStream(), "ERR").start;
         p.waitFor();
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
         //can't wait for process?
         //better go to sleep some.
         log.info("Can't wait for process! Going to sleep 10sec.");
         try{ Thread.sleep(10000); } catch (InterruptedException ignoreMe) {}
    } finally {
         if (outShow!=null) outShow.halt();
         if (errShow!=null) errShow.halt();
    /**within the class showOutput:*/
    /**This method gets called by showOutput's halt:*/
    public void notifyOfHalt() {
         log.debug("Registered a notification to halt");
         try {
              myReader.close(); //is initialized to read from the given InputStream
         } catch (IOException ignoreMe) {}
    }Seems as if the both of you are quite sure that the pipes are actually created by the exec command and not closed afterwards.
    Would you deem it unlikely that most of the handles are opened somewhere else and the exec command is just the final one that crashes the prog?
    That's what I thought.
    Thanks for your time
    Tom
