Why do I have thousands of files in my trash?

I rarely delete files, so I'm always surprised to see that there are over a thousand or so files in my trash can  every time I empty it (every few weeks).  Is this some type of automated housekeeping that the system is doing?  What's going on here?
-Dan

.ipa files (iPad/iPhone Apps) are trashed during sync if an updated version exists on your mobile device. The updated version is then placed in iTunes. It also appears that an .ipa file is not just a sinle file but contains hundreds, sometimes thousands of sub files/folders. The more complex the App, the more files they contain. Athough Get Ifo does not recognise anything more than one file, this may be why Trash is recognising those fies within the .ipa that was sent to Trash.
Could be wrong, but that is how it seems on my Mac.

    Hi ajoddo20,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
You can use Home Sharing to import music and other media from one computer to another. Please use the instructions and information located in the attached article for information on how to complete the process.

From the Finder menu select 'Secure Empty Trash'. If this or the suggestion above doesn't resolve the problem take a look at the various suggestions in this link:

Suddenly I have problems moving files to the trash...  get a dialog saying Finder wants to make changes and I must provide the password... Any explanation or ideas how I can get this to stop?

Please take these steps if you're prompted for a password when moving items in your home folder to the Trash.
    1. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/.Trash
    2. Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
    3. The dialog should show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section. If that's not what it shows, click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your password when prompted. Use the plus- and minus-sign buttons to give yourself Read & Write access and "everyone" No Access. Delete any other entries in the access list.
    4. In the General section, uncheck the box marked Locked if it's checked.
    5. From the action menu (gear icon) at the bottom of the dialog, select Apply to enclosed items and confirm.
    6. Close the Info window and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Why can't I delete mp3 files from my Trash?  They are not locked.

Why can't I delete mp3 files from my Trash? They are not locked.  I compressed them into a zip file and then couldn't delete that file either.  I've restored them and tried deleting again but no luck.  Can anybody please help?  iOS 10.8.5

You can't empty the Trash or move a file to the Trash
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on solving Trash issues. You can also try using Trash It! 5.1 to fix the problem. Or you can try this:
Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder and paste the following at the prompt:
         sudo rm -Rf ~/.Trash/*
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not echo to the screen. Press RETURN again.

  • Why, when I have two PDF file open, is one document faded out?

    Hi All
I was wondering if someone out there could maybe help me?
I’m having problems with opening documents in Adobe Acrobat Pro. When I have one PDF file open and I open another one, the one opened later has kind of a grey/black film making it difficult to read.
I was wondering if maybe anybody out there has had similar problem? Or maybe you know what can cause this?
    Thank you in advance
    Pete

Which version of Acrobat and which version of Windows do you have?

  • I have sent a file to the trash bin. When I come to empty the trash bin everything goes out except this one particular file and I get a note saying the file is 'in use' but it is not. How can I delete this file from trash?

I have a Macbook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.2. I have sent a work file to the trash bin along with many other files. When I empty the trash this one particular file remains and I get a message that this file is still in use. I have tried returning the file to my documents, opening it, closing it and then sending it to trash and again I try to empty trash but the same message comes up - Q - How can I trash this file permanently?

First just try logging out and back in.  Whatever is holding on to it may not be running after the logout thus freeing it so you can trash it after logging back in.
You might also try Trash It!

  • Why do I have a missing file msvcr80.dll all of a sudden?

I just used iTunes the other day and when I tried to open it today there is an error (7) and windows error 126 and a missing file msvcr80.dll.
    What is going on?

The continued connection to the Events allows you to continue editing the project, or to use the Event in another project. As long as you are not editing, you do not have to have the external drive connected (but you will have the yellow triangles).
If you delete the events to reclaim space, I think you are basically left with your finished movie and further editing is not possible. (Although you could import your finished movie as an Event and do edits on that.)
Once the Project is done and shared, and you are absolutely, positively sure that you will never have to edit it further (or you are willing to re-import from your source and start over) then you can delete the event files and recover the space.
That's what I think. I am sure others will jump in to correct anything I got wrong.
I would also say that you might get a better experience by playing your finished movies in iTunes rather than through iMovie. Then there will be no possibility of further editing, but you can view your movie through Quicktime.

  • Why do I have a blinking file folder on my screen? (and nothing else)

When I turn on my Mac, I get a blinking file folder with a question mark on it.  What can I do?

The iMac can't find any bootable partition. First, insert the OS X DVD, press C key while your Mac is starting, go to  > Startup Disk and select Macintosh HD.
If it doesn't work, go to Utilities > Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair the disk. If nothing helps, take the Mac to an Apple Store

  • Why do I keep finding recovery files in my trash?

MSO8AAC925BF11 file is in my trash for no reason...anybody?

For some reason that I've never been able to determine (nor has anyone else in the occasional post I've seen on various forums) iWork doesn't seem to quite properly clean up the temporary files it creates when converting Microsoft Office Suite files in order to open them.
Therefore, if you have opened any MS Office files into Pages, Keynote or Numbers and then see a Recovered Files folder in the trash when you next start up, it's perfectly normal. If annoying.
Of course, I don't know if this applies to your situation; I can't tell by looking at the name if MSO8AAC925BF11 could have been generated by a Microsoft application...

  • When I'm writing a email or replying why do I have many many copies in my trash to delete, seems a bit strange

I dislike all the extra trash I get as all my email comes to me now from gmail. As well when I'm replying to email or writing anyone, my trash bin act's like I'm going to forget something I'm writing and copies it down in the trash bin so by the time I'm done writing to someone or replying I have about 10 to 100 copies or more of same letter with a virtual breakdown of every pause I take?
It's annoying to have to throw away more than one reply or email and it makes one think of the NSA?
Not that I should give a rats ass but it is annoying and does take up a little more time to dump!

right click empty trash takes the same time regardless of the content.
However i get where your coming from. You don't say so but I guess this is gmail?

  • How can I remove thousands of "file not found" songs efficiently?

I have thousands of "file not found" songs interwoven throughout my library.
Is there any fairly automated way to cull these dead songs without loosing all my playlists (which is the price of starting over)
In every case they are duplicates, so ideally I would like to cause the dead songs to refer to the duplicate (or similar) song it is next to.
I could delete them all by hand, but it would literally take days.
My playlists refer to many of these dead songs too, which is why I want to find an automated way to reference them over to similarly named duplicate songs.
Any tips of any kind are greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Kay's link seems helpful, though if you don't like downloading scripts, you could alternateively:
    1. Go to your Library
    2. Go to Edit > Show Duplicate Songs
    3. Erase every other song
This is the way I would do it, however you say that you have many songs you need to do. Hope this helped?

  • I just transferred "all movies" to "My Passport" hard drive.  Several images of the same clips appear.  Is each image a valid clip?  Why do I have so many?

I just transferred "all movies" to "My Passport" hard drive.  Several images of the same clips appear.  Is each image a valid clip?  Why do I have so many?

Okay. Trash the stuff on the External Drive.
All Movies is not a place - it's a list. Specifically its a list of all the movies on your Mac. Never interact with anything in iPhoto via these All Movies or All Images lists.
In iPhoto select the Movies you want to move and go File -> Export. Set the Kind: to Original and export from iPhoto to this external drive.
Then once you're sure the export has gone correctly, erase them from iPhoto.
