Why do I have to convert t2i files to pro res in fcp x? What difference does it make ?

Hey Guys,
Just wondering why do I have to convert canon t2i files to prores in fcp x? What difference does it make ? I'm able to edit in fcpx the files that have just been imported diectly in. Does it cause any problems in export?
Thanks so much,
Jamie

I am not familiar with Canon files.
I assume that they are like AVCHD which are really designed only as a delivery format and not for editing.
Though they can be edited it is concidered better to convert them to ProRes 422 for editing.
Though nothing terrible will probably happen if you don't convert them, you are likely to get improved results and faster rendering of complex effects with the converted media.
The best thing is to do 2 very short (sub - 5 minute) identical test projects adding lots of effects etc. with both methods and then you will be able to determine which technique suits you.

  • What difference does it make if you have boot camp beta and it has expired

I have an imac w/OS 10.4.11--when i purchased it several years ago i had it partitioned and had windows xp installed. when i purchased this several years ago, they were using boot camp beta to do this.
recently i found out that the boot camp beta expired. the problem is i don't see how it has affected my windows or my mac. i don't see any difference.
the only problem i have is that i can't access the internet from the windows xp--*is this something that upgrading my OS and using the full bootcamp would correct?*
if not, then why should i upgrade the OS to Leopard using the final version of boot camp--what will i be able to do that i can't do now _from the WINDOWS XP perspective?_ ( i assume there are advantages from the Mac perspective, but nothing i can see that i need there--i look at the internet, play games (not action games), and write documents).

    hi iatrosm,
Yes, i had internet access from both windows xp and from mac for about a year and a half, and then one day the windows access 'disappeared'
i had a microsoft certified technician (son of a friend who also works in the field) come and look at it.
we could only find that for whatever reason the modem was not receiving the signal any longer from windows. the windows showed that the modem was receiving it.
    That's indeed very odd.
naturally apple said it was a windows problem and microsoft said it was an apple problem.
my personal feeling is that it is a hardware problem--but the issue is receiving from windows.
the modem works fine from my mac side.
Is this a dial-up modem or part of DSL ?
And how is it connected (ethernet...) ?
Has it some sort of self-test feature or the possibility for a full reset ?
While hardware can break, it usually breaks completely, not OS-dependent.
Is the modem shown in the Device Manager of Windows (Control Panel - System - Hardware) ?
Any system updates you have installed in Windows prior to the failure of the modem ?
    Any Firewall settings changed ?

  • Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

File Sharing failed between my Mavericks iMacs.  The console logs showed that the target iMac saw the ntlmv2 protocol as unknown to the kdc.  I fixed it by enabling Windows File Sharing on the target Mavericks iMac.  I had tried disabling SMB on both iMacs and leaving AFP on, but then nothing happened when I tried to connect.  Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

When you enable file sharing you need to have either SMB (Windows) or AFP (historically Apple-native) file sharing checked. The default in Mavericks is SMB, and not AFP.
If you uncheck both, then the system will turn off file sharing. Apple supports the use of both SMB and AFP connections in Mavericks, so with only AFP enabled you should have been able to establish a connection, but there could be a small bug or configuration-specific snafu that you're encountering.
With AFP enabled only, try pressing Command-K in the Finder to open the Connect To Server dialogue, and in here enter the address to the system using afp:// as the protocol, such as the following (the name can be looked up in the Sharing system preferences):
    afp://my_imac.local

...Or do I have to convert the files? If so, can it be done in iMovie, or do I have to grab some additional software?
    Thanks!

You have the option of creating a lower quality version that will work on both or make a copy for each. 30 fps isn't something I come across too much being in the UK but when I do I make a copy for each, I suspect my Apple TV 1's will be obsolete some day and then I'll delete the lower quality copies.
You might find my User Tip helpful when it comes to exporting for both models.

  • How to convert video files so they render in FCP?

I'm having trouble converting video files and using them in FCP. My problem is I have to keep rendering a clip every time I modify it in FCP. I know how to fix this issue with audio by exporting a file to the correct sample rate, but with video I can't find the correct option. I've tried converting my video to MPEG-4 and Quicktime movie but nothing works.

Convert it to a nle friendly format like DV, Pro Res, etc. Mpeg4 is not nle friendly.
    Import the video.
Make sure the sequence settings are the same as the video clip--i.e. if you converted the video to DV NTSC 29.97, the sequence setting should match that.
If your sequence settings match your video, you won't have to render unless you add an effect or transition, etc.

  • Using Media Manager to convert movies to apple pro res

Using Media Manager to convert movies to apple pro res,  How can I convert my existing media files  from quicktime movies into apple pro res 422 ?
After they are converted will I have to re-point my fcp project to the converted files?
Thank You for taking time to answer these
    Carl

    Sorry, I am not following.
You said you have converted them to prores LT & are having this issue, or is it with H264 files in your edit?
How did you convert? using media manager, or compressor?
if you still are using the H264 media that would be the issue.
That is not an editing codec. it is a delivery codec.
The thing to have done would have been to convert to prores before you started editing.
    or did you do that?

  • Convert h.264 to Pro Res

I was having a problem editing h.264 shot on a DSLR....
Some on this forum kindly answered my question suggestiong I convert
    the video to pro res.
What is the best way to convert the video to ProRes.
I have edited a sequence and do not want to start over again.
    Thanks

    Try again…
If you've managed tio edit a h.264 sequence, you've already jumped through some hurdles. Try exporting, You may be lucky.
If that gets weird, change the sequence settings to Pro Res  – either PR422 or PR LT. Then export.
In the future, best practices are to use Log & Transfer, assuming you have intact card.
If you don't, convert the clips in Compressor or MPEG Streamclip. Then bring them into FCP.
    Good luck.

I already have a subscription for Captivate.  I would like to add InDesign.  Does it make more sense to just buy the while package @ the $49/month rate?

As of now, Captivate & In design can not be clubbed together. You can buy the CC complete package or go for single app.

  • Why do I have 17.8GB sleepimage file?

Recently I have used Disk Inventory X to get a rid off some of my old files. The thing is that I was shocked when I found a sleepimage folder with 17.8GB sleepimage files. Why does my MB Air collecting that much of data? Usually it has to be about 2-3 GB.

There is only one sleep image file.  It is by necessity slightly bigger than the amount of RAM that you have.
The other files are swap files.  You must be running some big applicatoons to have that much swap file space in use on a machine that has 8 GB of RAM.

  • Why do I have so many log files?

I ran GrandPerspective on my iMac because my HD is pretty much full and it shows me that I have about 140 gigs of log files (about 380 files x 365 megs). That's half my HD. Why do I have so many? Can I delete them and how? I ran Onyx and Cocktail but they are still there. They are all in the private/var/log/asl directory.
    Thanks

Yes you can delete them, but you will be asked to authenticate to do so. And it is possible that they will simply start being created all over again. This can be the result of either of two things:
    1. The asl log process itself is having a problem (it is so prone to problems that I have not updated my working drive to 10.5.6, but decided to stay at 10.5.5; I have an extremely clean install of 10.5.6 on another drive)
    2. You have some other process that is going mad and sending out continuous log notes
For the second problem try launching Console from your Utilities folder and take a look a look at the Console log, watch it in real time and see if there are constant messages appearing, and what is sending them. Then you can start figuring out what needs to be fixed. For instance, one fairly common problem involved software installed by Canon for one of their popular scanners which constantly, several times a second, sent an error message. There are many other possible sources for such a problem.
For problems caused by asl itself, see:

    http://www.powerpage.org/2009/01/how-topreventing_the_asl_manager_from_overrunning_thecpu.html
If you do a Google search on ASL you'll find many similar reports.

  • Can't find geometry tab on Compressor 4.1.3 and need to convert mov file to 800x600 res

I just bought Compressor 4.1.3. because I was told it's the only way to convert movies exported from finalcutprox to custom resolution. I need 800x600 and I looked up a tutorial that says the custom res option is in the "geometry tab".  However, that was for an earlier version and I cannot find that tab on this latest version. Can somebody please tell me how to convert files to custom res in Compressor 4.1.3.? It's very important, and I paid 50 dollars just to do it. I'd appreciate any advice people have.
    Thanks so much!

Perhaps it would be best if you could post a screen shot of your original video.  For example, open it in QT Player and hit command i. Take a screen shot of the image and the movie inspector.
All of the functions and their adjustments that used to be grouped in Geometry in previous versions of Compressor are now located in the integrated video pane of the Inspector.

  • Converting H.264 files to Pro res 422

    Hi
I've been given some H.264 files (.MOV and .THM) that were dragged onto my harddrive.
I want to covert them to Pro Res 422 to edit them in Final Cut
I tried to create a droplet to do this by: FILE - Create Droplets and selecting the Apple Pro Res 422 option in the Quicktime settings folder.
Is this correct? Or have I missed out a/some stage/s?
Do I need to convert both the .MOV and .THM files?
And how can I tell if the new clips are in the correct format?
    Thanks.

If you import these files into Final cut just go to your sequence settings and transcode to APR.

  • HOW DO I CONVERT F4VS TO APPLE PRO RES?

Hi, I need to transfer a premiere pro project as a XML to FCP so i plan to convert the files into premiere pro  into Apple prores so they can opened in a Apple Pro Res project in FCP. The files I need to convert are the original MOVs and F4vs so the movs won't be a problem but the I've tried converting the f4Vs in Adobe Media Encoder and it seems to suggest I need FCP installed on my computer to convert them to pro res bu there must be a way of getting F4vs in to FCP. This is a project I'm transferring to be opened on someone elses computer in their FCP so how is this done?
    PLEASE HELP!
I have the apple pro res codec already installed on my computer and downloaded a free trial of Pavtube but when I tried converting a F4v file into prores it said I need Final Cut already installed on my computer so would wondershare say the same thing. Sorry but I just want to be clear so...If I convert all the movie files in my Premiere Project into Apple Pro Res then export that as a XML then send all the individual files along with the XML project file to another computer they would be able to open the XML project all good and fine in FCP7?... There isn't any speed adjusted clips in the project as with those I nested and converted them into f4vs in Media Encoder then reimported them into the Pro project, then there are a few clips that I have adjusted the scale and postion and put on a slight fade on some clips- would those effects transfer to FCP7 ok ?
The project files I used in Pro are-
    Editing Mode: DSLR,
    25fps,
    frame size 1920 x 1080, vertical 16:9,
Pixel Aspect Ratio, Square Pixels (1.0)
    Fields : No Fields(Progressive Scan)
    Sample Rate 48000,
    Video Previews-
Preview File Format I-Frame Only Mpeg
    Codec Mpeg I-frame
So if they open a project in FCP7 with as much of those settings as possible and in Apple Pro Res and then import the XML would that work?
Any advice would be extremely welcome and I'll be very greatful.Cheers
    Simon

Try using MPEG Streamclip. Seems to work for a lot of folks.
