Why do I have to force quit mail?

Mail almost all the time never closes by closing it, I have to force quit it.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Have to force-quit Mail - Update did not fix

The update seemed to fix all of the issues I had with SL, except for the spinning wheels in Mail, and that Mail will not quit without a force-quit. It will even cancel a restart. Am I the only one left with this issue?

    Problem
Here is what is happening. Btw I am using a Dutch version so my apologies if I translate menu-options wrong.
Mail is opened at startup. When I want to quit (CMD-Q) mail, nothing happens and the program gets in a sort of wait state. The system doesn't say that mail is not responding anymore. When I open the Mail-menu several options are greyed-out, including the CMD-Q as if the program is waiting for something. After waiting 15 minutes still the same and the only way to end mail is by using the force quit option.
If Mail is opened and I use the red X to close the window it isn't possible to open it anymore. Stopping the normal way isn't possible either and I am in the same situation as above and need to force-quit Mail.
If I leave Mail open and want to shutdown the computer I have to force quit Mail, because otherwise I cannot shutdown anymore.
    *Solutions I've tried*
Using the Rebuild menu-option doesn't help.
I have downloaded the complete 10.6.2 dmg-file and re-installed it. This seemed to fix the problem, at least for a little while. But unfortunately after a day the same problem came back
    How can this be possible?
Is there anyone out there who has the same problem and knows how to fix this? Would it help to re-install the mailprogram? How do I do this?
This is happening on the new computer of my father. I have convinced him to make the switch from Windows, but this situation is making me feel a bit embarrassed

  • Have to Force quit Mail & cannot delete certain messages

I know some folks have already posted about this, but I've yet to find a solution. My mail continues to download the same, previously deleted messages each time I open it. I also have to force quit mail to leave it. It will download new mail from my .mac account while in this condition but will not access my other sympatico mail account. In order to get new mail I have to force quit and reopen the app. I've considered the 'rebuild mailbox' option but all of these annoying messages are in my inbox and there appears to be no 'rebuild' function for the inbox. I've also tried going into my library and manually moving these files to the trash and restarting mail. They appear again. Can someone please offer me a solution to this problem. All I can think of doing now is getting rid of Leopard to go back to Tiger mail.
    Thanks

Hold the phone. This, apparently, may be a Bell Sympatico server issue after all. I've tried to get in contact with their support people and the message says that they've been having problems. Also, my wife, who only uses .mac mail recieved the same email (that keeps popping up in my inbox) and has had no issues. I retrieved my mail using my newer imac as well and the same problem occured there. Hence, it is probably not an app issue, but a server issue.
Thanks all for your help. Hopefully I can resolve this with Sympatico.

  • Have to Force Quit Mail

Wondering if anyone can help? mail 4.0 under snow leopard will only quit if I just open and close it, If I ck for mail, send an email or delete emails, etc, It will not quit, I have to force quit it, Ive tried to quit up top under mail, and also in the dock where when you click on mail it now shows a quit option, neither quits mail for me, I realize that this is minor compared to what some people are experiencing, bur any help -advice would be appreciated Thanks

I can tell you what worked for me. The Activity window in Mail(window menu) showed that Mail was trying to sync with something-"...Registering syncing preferences". I went to home/library/Application Support and moved the SyncServices folder to the trash. Restarted and everything seems to be working fine. Mail quits normally.

  • I want to delete my mac account and replace it with my gmail account. I know how to do this but when I click and open up mail I get the spinning wheel and have to force quit mail.

I want to disable my mac.com mail, I know how to delete it but I cannot get into mail to do this, whenever I click on mail, or mail in system preferences to open it I get the spinning wheel and have to force quit. I am running a Macbook 10.7.5
    Thanks,
    Edward.

You can't merge Apple IDs.  You also can't cancel (delete) and existing ID, you can only choose to stop using it.
If your old ID was compromised and you can no longer access it, you'll have to contact Apple for assistance.  Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then then 'Apple ID account Security’.

Mail window may be in the Full Screen mode.
Move the mouse pointer to the top right corner of the Mail window and hold it there.
Menu bar should drop down and click the blue double arrow icon.
Full Screen toggle shortcut:  control + command + F

The issue was solved by .mac mail.

  • Why do I have to Force Quit iTunes so often?

On my old G3 iBook I remember I had to Force Quit iTunes (can't remember which ancient version that was) sometimes when it 'froze' after I clicked a new track title on a CD that was in the Drive.
In iTunes 6, this never ever ever ever ever ever happened. Never. Not once. Ever. I silently congratulated Apple on eliminating that annoying particular little glitch.
Now I've recently downloaded iTunes 7 - it's happening again !! Several times when I click to play a different track on a CD in the drive, I get "iTunes (not responding)" and I have to Force Quit. This is REALLY REALLY annoying. Why has this old fault returned?
(btw I just saw the thread below mine, about iTunes needing Force Quit after playing 2 tracks on a CD? This is NOT the same fault. iTunes will happily PLAY a whole CD without complaining - the problem occurs after I double-click to play a different track while another one is still playing.)

FWIW, I have had a similar problem, where iTunes froze on random songs at two seconds into the song. I would have to force quit, then restart. This occurred when I put in a CD to play from the beginning, while I did other things. I have not witnessed your circumstances when clicking a new track to play. I do not do this often, except after I restarted iTunes to continue the CD.
I just deleted the com.apple.itunes.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences and so far, so good.

  • Always have to force quit mail app

A few weeks ago, I starting having problems with my mail app on my imac. I have 2 mail accounts set up in the app, one is my mobile me and the other is through AOL. Before I updated my computer to snow leopard, this app worked fine. It seem to work fine for a few weeks after I did the update, but now once I open the mail app, in order to get new mail to show up in the inbox, I have to force quit out of the app and open it back up. I cannot just go to 'mail' and 'quit mail' the app freezes. I have tried clicking the 'get mail' button and nothing happens when clicking on it. I have also searched the support forums and have tried to delete the 'com.apple.mail.plist' file and nothing changes.
I am frustrated because I have this exact same set up on my macbook pro and things seem to work just fine. I have checked all the settings and they all match.
Any ideas? I am sick of force quitting and reopening mail when I want to see if I have new emails....
Anyway to just get rid of the mail app and reinstall this application. I dont want to have to re-install the entire snow leopard program and have to go through all the tedious work of putting all my stuff back on the computer.... (the first time I did the upgrade, for some reason my computer crashed, and I lost everything, had to call apple support and they had to talk me through the reinstall-- luckily I had everything backed up on disks)

Finder won't show you invisible Files (filenames beginning with a period). That's what makes fixing Mail such a hassle.
In Applications/Utilities you'll find a program called Terminal.app. It lets you access the command-line interface where you're free to do absolutely anything. Be careful there.
Open a Terminal window and paste this in:
    find ~/Library/Mail -name .\*
A list of invisible files files will be displayed. If it's just caches and index states, as I mentioned in the earlier posting, run the command again with the delete flag:
    find ~/Library/Mail -name .\* -delete
Don't run this if the first listing looks like it's showing e-mails. I also recommend checking that you have a backup first.

  • Have to force quit mail from activity monitor + Mail is ALWAYS syncing

Hi, i am currently having a big problem with Mail, i have to force quit from activity monitor, it will not quit from the file menu, and in the activity window in mail it is always syncing. I have deleted all my mail accounts, (various gmail IMAP accounts) and mobileme account, turned off mobileme syncing, unregistered my lap top and reset sync data. Each time i open mail, the mobile me account returns and starts syncing, in activity monitor it shows it using large amounts of memory too. When i open mail in another user account (without mobileme) it seems to work fine. I have deleted preferences, repaired permissions, check the disk, disk clean up, everything i can think of......... Please HELP
    many thanks

Hi, I removed Glims and it solved my problem.

  • Why do I have to force quit Garageband?

When I start a new song or if I 'save changes' to an old one, the program 'unexpectedly quits'.... but I have to 'force quit' Garageband before it will start again. I'm recording ambient sound with an external mike but I'd like to be able to use it to arrange songs if I could. Am I asking too much of it? I mean, it's supposed to at least be able to do a bit of straight recording isn't it? It's got a gig of sdram. Thanx in advance

Have you tried unchecking the "automatically check for newly published albums" checkbox in prefs / web. Do this for each online account. This worked for me. The source to this solution was on Flickr.

  • Why do I have to Force Quit applications?

Pages 09, safari and iCal won't shut down. I have to force quit the application every time. I have reinstalled OS X (tiger that came with the iMac G5) and upgraded it through Software update. It is very annoying. I have also used disk utility and vertified the HD, which seems to be fine. Also ran OnyX. Also tells me everything's fine. Anyone know what might be causing this behaviour? Thank you.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode, (do those APPs Quit OK?)...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot and not in Safe Mode, then it is likely some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Also see what is in System Preferences>Other Row.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Have to Force Quit Mail every time

Since upgrading to 10.6.4, I've had trouble quitting Mail.
I manage two email accounts through Mail: one MobileMe and another from work.
After running for an extended period of time, it will not accept the Quit command. It requires a Force Quit.
When it is having this problem, the Activity Monitor shows that Mail is taking 30-45% of the CPU.
It doesn't do it immediately, though. Mail has to be launched for some time.
If I open it, perform a few tasks (check mail, send mail, etc), and then try to quit, it will do so just fine.
Does anyone have suggestions as to what is causing this?
    Thanks in advance.
    Tim

While I am not saying I know exactly what is going on, I do have a suggestion that might help as it has helped me in the past.
First, Do a permission repair via Disk Utility. Then check if that helps.
If not, then another suggestion would be to delete the .plist file from user/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Note however, that this will mean you have to set up your accounts and preferences again.

  • Spinning Beachball of Death . . . why did I have to Force Quit ???

    Folks:
Last week I had an episode of multiple recurring "application not
responding" errors while trying to select and scroll down through a couple
hundred pages of text in a manuscript of approx. 1.8 MB in size in my word processor, Mellel. As I scrolled down about half way the spinning beachball started spinning and the scrolling process became slow, sluggish, and then unresponsive . . . . I force quit and repeated another 2x to no different response. Finally did "select all" to whole doc and then had to go in to the few pages that I had originally not wanted to select and change them to back to what I wanted . . . a little bit "bassakwards" but I got it done the old fashioned way. Now, when I attempt to "save edits" as I'm going thru my doc the beachball will spin for different periods of time. This is mostly an all text doc with just two (2) photos that have been "inserted" into the doc--seems like the photo's are smaller files than the original, and about 250 pp.
So, the question is is mr Mel (Mellel) trying to tell me something about my system; is this perchance a sign that Macinto II (the 2nd HD in the iBook) is coming close to its ultimate demise? A few years back I began having "issues" with mr Mel that eventually were shown to be signs of the end of Macinto I (named after the famous Seminole Indian chief who fought the US Army to a draw in the Everglades). I had just run the Apple Hardware test just a few days before this
recent episode all happened and it seemed to be OK. But it has been mentioned
here that mr Mel is "processor intensive" and could be just testing the limits
of my 2nd HD??? OR is the test over and all that is left is the funeral pyre for
    Macinto II??
Would essentially a 2MB Mellel file be too large for my 933 MHz G4 iBook
    with 640 MB DDR SDRAM running Mellel 2.2.7 (build b9) on 10.4.11 . . . to handle
even if it was totally in fighting condition?? Or is the probably 3 year old HD
being brought to expiration by having to deal with running the features that are
brought to the table by mr Mel??
    Thanks for any thoughts,
    eep

Word processors typically load a large portion of a file into RAM for editing. When more of the document is needed it pages out the unneeded portion and reads more of the document into RAM. So in practice no document is too large. None of your "surmises" would seem to make sense.
A more likely scenario is disk corruption or file corruption assuming the hard drive isn't failing. Continued forced shutdown of the computer is a sure fire way to corrupt a hard drive if not cause it fatal damage.
    I suggest reading the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. CloneTool Hatchery (Shareware)
    12. Clone X (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
