Why do I have to now pay for Visual V-Mial when I had it for free on my iPhone?

I recently switched from an iPhone 4S to the HTC 8x WinPhone. Now I have to subscribe to a voice mail service to get the same functionality I had on my iPhone?? Why?

Thanks for the response. Your reasoning still doesn’t make sense. Are you saying that HTC uses your platform for messages and Apple does not? I was told by HTC that it is up to the carrier (VZW in this case) whether or not to charge for visual vmail (see quote below).

I rely on my voicemail when I'm on the go and I will be glad to help out. The decision on whether a device will ship with visual voicemail and whether there is a charge is actually up to the carrier to make. Are you saying you charge because there is data involved? If so, I pay extra for a data plan so why hit me twice? And, I’m not sure what visual voice mail does to incur data charges but it has to be miniscule and insignificant.
I pay an ungodly amount to VZW now and you want to charge for a basic feature like visual voicemail. It’s absurd and not very conducive to customer satisfaction.

It's nothing to do with app restrictions, a free app is still considered a purchase and requires approval if you enable the Ask for Approval feature on a family member. I was hoping for an easy to way to say "Yes, I will buy you that game..," not a constant annoyance of having to approve every free game they download. I would love to take advantage of the other features of Family Sharing but this problem actually blocks it. I have to remove them from the iCloud family or else they are essentially restricted from downloading free apps.

iCloud backs up your iOS device (not your Mac) automatically. You can remove the backup:

and it will not back up again. This will not affect a backup made using iTunes. The notice you see refers to calendars, contacts, iWork documents and so on, which live on the server and are read from there by your Mac, and so will obviously disappear if you turn iCloud off altogether (which you don't need to do) or turn off Documents (which you don't need to do either).

The price of an app, and how it is marketed, is controlled by that app's developer. They certainly may advertise that an app is free, but the App Store price is the only price. If the App Store says the app is free (ie, the download button says "Free" instead of listing a price), then it's free.
If you are seeing a bill in your bank statement for a free app, that is probably coming from some kind of in-app purchase. Many apps have additional features or special game items that can be purchased within the app. A free app may still have such in-app purchases.
It's important to note that in-app purchasing should be a very transparent process. It should be made clear that you are making a purchase, and you should have to enter your Apple ID password. If you have found an app that does not make this process transparent, and hides the fact that a purchase with real money is being made, that needs to be reported to Apple as a violation of the App Store rules. If Apple agrees with you, they will remove the app from the store until the developer submits a more compliant update.

Finally if you are in a managed environment then please work with your I.T. department to apply the update.

I have always paid my bill in full, and so when I tell you that my monthly payment went up $20.00, and it's not because of anything I added or created, it's because I am like all the thousands of Verizon customers out there, that are now paying for Verizon's cause, which is to pay their employees more. If you are going to raise the fees at least think about rollover minutes like your competitor, then maybe we can go for an affordable plan.

It sounds like your daughter was using a feature phone with the $9.99 data plan (which includes 75MB of data transfer).
A blackberry is a smartphone, and it requires a minimum $29.99/month data plan. If you added it before July 7th, you are on the unlimited plan for $29.99. If you added it on or after July 7th, then it is probably on the $30/2GB plan that Verizon recently introduced.
There is no smaller data package for a smartphone currently available. If you want to reduce your bill, you will have to reactivate a feature phone on that line, or reduce other areas of your bill as you've suggested.
I'd like to point out that this increase has NOTHING to do with the strike by Verizon Residential employees, and you did, in fact, authorize the change when you activated the Blackberry because all Verizon smartphones require a minimum data plan and have for several years.
It's unfortunate that the rep you spoke with gave you bad information, but there is no way to have a Blackberry with less than a $30/month data plan right now.

It isn't that risky. You may be reading hundreds of posts here about problems, but that is out of MILLIONS of iPhones that have been upgraded. Percentage-wise, that means most people have no problem.
However, as with any major change to your system, you should back up everything your iPhone first. Just right-click it in iTunes to get the backup menu. That will be your safe fallback position in case something goes wrong.
I still use an iPhone 3GS. That's older than your iPhone. But iOS 5 works fine on it.
