Why do I have to render everything??

Hi there,
I am very new to both Mac and Final Cut Express. I got final cut a few days ago now and a friend of mine has asked me to chop up some video for him.
It was originally a .VOB file so I've used a converter to convert the files into .MOV (QuickTime) and imported them into FCPE. My problem lies with the fact that I have to render each of these clips as soon as I put them in and then again when I apply any effects. I see this as a lot of hassle for such simple tasks, am I doing something wrong?
I used Sony Vegas on Windows before and there was significantly less rendering to be done.
Josh

>Just to clarify then, I should use MPEG Streamclip to convert the .VOB files to QuickTime DV/DVCPro and then that should solve the rendering issue?
Absolutely.  The key to not having to render is to make sure the media you bring into a project and place on the Timeline matches the Sequence settings exactly.  So when converting a DVD's VOB files, use MPEG Streamclip to convert to QuickTime DV/DVCPro or to AIC, whichever your Sequence is set for.  Usually you'd use QuickTime DV for standard definition footage and AIC for high definition footage.
Here's a tutorial for using MPEG Streamclip:  http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739
Once all the footage in the Timeline matches the Sequence settings, you shouldn't have to render anything for playback until you've added enough effects that your system can't keep up with (filters, transitions, composites, layers, etc). Of course, some media like still images are video and will always need to be rendered for output as video.

  • Why do i have to render everything on fce

I think it's Final Cut Express, maybe a student edition. I don't know, It's my roommates. but when i upload my footage shot from 1080p dslr, I can't upload it without rendering everything. I have a 1 hour wedding video i have to put together and i just finished a 5 minute video for my church, the 5 minute video took about 1.5 hrs to render. i don't have the time to do that with the wedding. someone please help. as far as i know, my files are not compressed. and there should be no reason why i can't just upload without the render.

    >as far as i know, my files are not compressed. and there should be no reason why i can't just upload without the render
Oh but you're wrong.  The files your camera records are extremely compressed.  Your camera uses a recording format that was never designed for editing and certainly does not work natively in FCE ... hence the extremely long and constant renders.

  • Why Do I Have To Render EVERYTHING In FCE

I am brand new to Mac and FCE and i just switched from my PC and Sony Vegas because I've been told a million times that Mac is the way to go for video editing, and well right now I am having major doubts. I opened my HD file that i am going to work on and i pressed play on the canvas and it said "Unrenderd". I've been searching the internet, forums, manual and i cant find an answer that helps me 100%! Can someone please explain to me what i am doing wrong.

    consumer = convenience
You don't have to think about codecs, sampling rates, aspect ratio with iMovie - any 'fidget pictures' get converted. plug'n play.
A Pro would never use as highly-compressed material as h.264, which is made for playback. most of those playback-codecs don't store every frame, just 'differences' - for editing with frame-precision, the computer has to estimate content .... whooo, here goes quality. you can edit h.264, but that needs with the actual architecture of Quicktime a lot of computing(-power). if FC/QT/... would use the GPU for additional computation ...
the actual FC/e is intended for editing a few, 'better' codecs, no 'does edit all'-tool. -

  • Why do I have to render every video clip?

Every clip I put in FCE has to be rendered, why? Is there a setting I have to change? I have a canon hv-20 and I'm using the 1080i setting in the easy setup menu. Thanks for any help!

If they are identical then I can't help you. There is no reason why you would have to render. Which is that you have to render, video or audio or both? The render line is divided is divided into two thin stripes, upper for video, lower for audio.

  • HT6162 Why do I have to delete everything to make 3.8GB for this update?

Why do I have to delete everything to make 3.8GB for this update?

It downloads the compressed image, then it needs to uncompress it. The compressed image is large uncompressed it is even larger.
You need much less space if you use iTunes on your personal computer to do the install.

  • Why do I have to render simple titles in Premiere 6?

Hey People...I just got a brand new smokin' MAC with Premiere Pro 6...have been editing with Premiere for 10+ years...why do I have to render simple titles???  I could have three layers of video and not have to render, but a simple title needs to be rendered???!!!   WHY??  This did not happen in all previous versions of Premiere that I used...which leads me to believe it's some sort of setting issue...HELP ME PLEASE:)

Titles, rather like Still Images in the Timeline, are "synthetic Video," so for the ultimate playback, one would Render them. Now, I seldom find playback of Un-Rendered Titles to be an issue, and usually on do so, if I have adjusted, say Effect>Motion>Position, or Motion>Scale, or similar. Then, I might Render that portion of the Timeline, and maybe several times, if I am adjusting the Effects' parameters.
    Good luck,

  • Have to render EVERYTHING

Recently I have been having to render everything I put into the timeline and I can't for the life of me find out why. Can someone suggest a checklist that I can go through to figure this out? I have an intel iMac, 2GB of RAM, use Hi Def video from Canon HV20. Codec is set to HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 but I think that is what I have always used. In the past I would not have to render until I was well into the editing process but now, anything I drop into the timeline, even if it is a blank project, has to be rendered. It's making editing impossible.
I use a Lacie 1TB disk as a scratch disk. Could it be the amount of data on this disk?
    HELP!!!!!!

Here are differences between the clip and the sequence
vid rate for clip is 29.97 fps, vid rate for sequence is 25 fps
data rate for clip is 8.9 MB/sec, data rate for sequence is blank
alpha for clip is None(Ignore), alpha for sequence is blank
composite for clip is normal, composite for sequnce is blank
audio for clip is 1 Stereo, audio for sequence is 2 outputs
audio format for clip is 16 bit integer, audio format for sequence is 32 bit floating point

  • Do I have to render EVERYTHING?!

    Hi,
I'm pretty new to FCP, although I've used Adobe Premiere in the past and got on just fine with it.
I've managed to import clips from Finder (they came via an SD card from a HD camera) and have put them on the timeline, but I've had a number of strange things happening:
    * beeping sound when I try and play back the timeline
    * can't add video effects (all greyed out)
*the whole timeline is unrendered the whole time - but there is no effect on them. why do they need to render if I've done nothing to them?!
    * I can only play back one clip before it tells me there are dropped frames, and to turn off unlimited RT... what is this and where can I find it?!
I'm not too techy, but I recall someone telling me that you can't save the final project in the same place as the original clips, so I am now using a 612G server as the scratchdisk.
If it's because the files are too big for the computer to play with, is this what offline editing is for? If so how do I do it - the FCP tutorial on it didnt't explain offline editing when you import from Finder
    Copied from 'About this Mac'... 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 4GB 8-- MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

The beeping means the audio is unrendered

    not sure on this one
**the whole timeline is unrendered the whole time - but there is no effect on them. why do they need to render if I've done nothing to them?!*
some video formats are not natively supported by FCP. What you may need to do is convert all the clips to a different codec/filetype (apple pro res is good, though a little memory hefty) and then import them into FCP. Also, did you import directly from your camera, or did you copy the videos over to a hard drive first? That might be your problem as well.
*I can only play back one clip before it tells me there are dropped frames, and to turn off unlimited RT... what is this and where can I find it?!*
The RT (or "real time") settings are available in the form of a little ovalish button on the top left corner of the timeline window. It says "RT" on it.
*I'm not too techy, but I recall someone telling me that you can't save the final project in the same place as the original clips, so I am now using a 612G server as the scratchdisk.*
You can save the final project in the same place as the clips. However, never save to the SD card in a camera.

Others around here may have a better explanation of this, so I wont risk confusion on the issue here. I'll only say that...
    *Copied from 'About this Mac'... 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 4GB 8-- MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM*
...with a computer like that, there should be no trouble with file sizes/band width, or codecs. I do HDV and Pro Res editing on my macbook pro without a hiccup.
    *Any thoughts?*
    Thanks

I hope I was of some help.

  • Why do I have to render all of my HDV 1080i60 MultiCam Sequence

I have two HDV camra angle's in my multicam sequence.
I did realtime cuts between them but why do i need to render the whole sequence. I have half an hour of HDV, that takes along time. It also take's hours to render a portion of the video that i sent to motion for titling. This is really slowing me down.
Do you always have to render a multicam sequence?

No it wouldn't have to render except for effects that aren't real time.
The problem with HDV is it's not an all "i" frame format. Only 1 in 15 frames is a whole frame, the rest of the frames only contain the difference between the frames before and after (sort of)... but if you don't edit on an i frame, the video has to be rewritten in effect, creating a new GOP structure. (Group of pictures with an i frame every 15... in long gop anyway... there's short gop too.)
Most all other codecs are all i frame codecs.. every frame's information is there... so it's easier for the computer to deal with it.
DVCPROHD will create files about 4 times larger than HDV, but they're still small enough to play from a firewire drive... no need for a fast array.

  • Why do I have to click everything twice ?

When is Firefox going to fix this?
In every version after 3.6, I have had to click twice or "reload" the page. If I close the page and click again or reload the page, it immediately comes up.
It is not because of problems in my computer. I went into safe mode and disabled all add-ons and got the same result. It happens on 80-90% of the websites. There are a few sites that consistently load immediately but most I have to reload the page or wait for the page to load which can easily take 30 seconds to a minute.
I have a fast download of 28 and upload of 6. I have a clean computer, plenty of ram memory and have limited programs allowed to activate on start up. I usually have very few tabs open at a time. I've cleared cache and done all the usual things always recommended to do.
This is very frustrating and it has to have something to do with bugs in changes of versions since 3.6. That version worked perfectly. These latest versions up to the most recent update have been consistently more and more problems.

I'm with you RJ343, as an ex-software developer from the late 90's, I am appalled at the way Firefox has gone.... i recently upgraded to Windows 7 and Firefox 17 and it is disgusting the number of things that do not work,... and I have to LAUGH MY F**KING HEAD off when I hear geeks and nerds who are barely out of their cyber-nappies moan at me because I prefer 3.6 and they can't understand why i don't love the latest version... SIMPLES > because they are so full of bugs and workarounds and stupid add-ons I have to install just to go "back" to 3.6 and its glorious feature set that has since been ripped apart and hacked to smithereens and replaced with dodgy , sh*te alternatives that I'm supposed to adore ? Same with XP, I am still using it and will continue to use it until MS deliver something of quality that the users want, not what they want to force on me....
SO back to the topic -- I landed on this page because I have noticed that in FF17 I have to keep clicking everything TWICE, to get the page to load. It happens everywhere, it's as though the focus is not set properly, and the 1st click sets that, and then I have to click again to execute. Certainly I have just registered in order to write this post, I deem it that important, and now that I am , I will have to start replying and posting the myriad of other failures by FF development team in their latest versions,.... what I find the most insulting as I mentioned, is this indoctrination that I HAVE to use the latest versions over the old, tried & tested products like 3.6, because FF will withdraw support or add-ons stop working for the old versions. I wouldn't mind, if the new versions weren't such a croc of shoite and actually worked.
THIS BUG must be one of the most basic and incompetent of them all. Why do I have to bloody Double-click everything ??? !
''"3.6 was almost universally liked by everybody"'' - yes, because it was tried & tested.... obviously the latest generation of developers never heard of the old adage, "If its not broken, don't fix it"... and don't gimme all that crap about security vulnerability,.... that's just an extension of the War on Terror..... Fear is too widely traded for Functionality, and good solid TESTING , which seems to be a thing of the past. The software industry is in a crisis and soon there will be nothing that works and we will all hark back to XP and FF 3.6 as the golden age when software actually worked.

  • Why do I have to render all the time?

This just started, never had this problem before. Everytime I make a small edit/corrrection/level change etc. I have to render the audio.Otherwise I get that beep sound on the unrendered audio portions.
Why is this. I was before able to edit and not having to render every second.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

Glad to help. Note that audio filters added to a clip will add the equivalent of additional tracks. Some filters add the equiv. of one track, others add more.
IOW, you could have realtime audio playback set for 4 tracks, only have four tracks in the timeline, but still hear that annoying beep-beep-beep as the TL plays back through clips with filters added. Simply make the realtime audio tracks playback number larger by one or two tracks at a time until the beeps go away.
Also note that you add more tracks of real time audio playback at the expense of RT video playback. Many editors will edit video first, until video is locked or nearly locked, then add more tracks of realtime audio playback before they start working on the audio. Then change the number back to 4 or 6, or whatever, after the audio work is finished.

  • Why do I have to render?

I have a project where the video needs rendering after I drop from Viewer to Timeline. I shouldnt have to do this, correct? Unless the settings are somehow different?
Can somebody please help me get this straight? I've worked on projects before where you shouldnt have to render unless its an Effect or something.
But on this particular project I'm getting a red line as soon as I drop in a clip to timeline.
    Any help appreciated!!
    Powermac G5 Dual 2Ghz
    Final Cut Pro 5

Something doesn't match between the clip and the sequence.
Go through it piece by piece, comparing the clip's properties with the active sequence's settings (make sure you're looking at the active sequence's settings, not the settings for new sequences. If you selected the sequence and hit command-0, you're looking at the active sequence's settings).
If your settings match, no rendering is necessary (which is why something doesn't match).
If you can't figure it out, post some screenshots of your sequence settings screen and clip properties screen.

  • Now I have to render everything - never had to before

When I first started my video I could add text on top of a clip in the sequence and I never had to render anything. Now towards the end anytime I add text on top of a clip, I always have to render. All I'm doing is adding a Lower 3rd text box.
The only thing that has changed that I can think of is that the video is now almost two hours long. I'm curious to know why now all text added in has to be rendered when in the beginning it did not. Thanks.

Well as your project gets more complicated you are adding to the things fcp and the mac have to keep track of so you are adding to system overhead. If you take a bunch of stills and edit them into a new timeline, you'll see the first stills will be real time and the later stills will require a render. Seems to be the way things are.

  • Why do we have to type everything?

1119: Access of possibly undefined property ***** through a
    reference with static type *****.
This is a very annoying error. What I want to know is why do
we have to re-type pretty much all our variables?
I add an object with a variable towers (array containing
1,2,3) to the main stage. So I tried this (where stage is a
variable of type Stage passed down from the main stage and Me is
the object I am trying to access):
    stage.getChildAt(0).getChildAt(0).towers[2]
Which to me made a lot of sense. And it came up with the 1116
    error.
According to AS3, to reach that variable from within another
object you have to use this line of code (where stage is a variable
of type Stage passed down from the main stage and Me is the object
    I am trying to access):
    Me(DisplayObjectContainer(stage.getChildAt(0)).getChildAt(0)).towers[2]
What an absolute mess (and yes I've tried getChildByName, but
it just returns a null value). Why can't it be something like
(where towerList is the name of the Me object that was added to the
    stage):
    stage.towerList.towers[2]
Does anyone know a way of getting round having to re-type
these variables? Cause I'm going to be referencing objects which
might have many generations of children.

    zone12webmaster,
    > What I want to know is why do we have to re-type
    > pretty much all our variables?
As a rule, you don't have to, although it is occasionally
    necessary.
    > I add an object with a variable towers (array
    > containing 1,2,3) to the main stage.
How did you add this object? It sounds like this is a custom
    class
named Me, so how are you instantiating this object? Are you
    adding it to
the stage's display list? (Does it need to be in a display
    list?)
