Why do I have to search for a wifi network most every time I use the internet?

Why do I have to search for a wifi network almost every time I use the internet?
We have Cox internet on a wireless router.
It doesn't seem to be able to hold the wireless connection.....even a couple hours.
The router sits on the desk next to the computer.
Thanks for any suggestions you have.

I don't have any trouble connecting to the internet once I choose our network from the choices.
The computer just can't remember it.

Every time I'm using the internet, my pages reload every 10-20 seconds. Very aggravating. I worked with my internet provider for a year thinking it was their fault, but it turns out to be my computer, not the internet provider. Can anybody tell me why this is happening? Thank you.

    Hi Mary,
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

Test after taking each of the following steps. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly."
    3. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    4. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    5. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    6. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    7. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    8. Reset the System Management Controller.
    9. Reset the PRAM.
    10. Reinstall OS X.

  • Why do I have to allow or deny iTunes or any other software, access to the internet?

Why do I have to allow or deny iTunes or any other software, access to the internet?
I've had my MBP with Leopard since the summer of 2010. From then till this past spring, I have had my firewall on and when opening a program that needs internet access, such as: iTunes, Vuze, various office products, without a problem.
Since this spring, each time I open the above software, I have give permission (allow/deny) internet access. So, this isn't a prolem really, I'm just curious why this is happening.
Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core I7
    Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OS X 10.6.8

Did you install Little Snitch (or Hands Off)?  It will post a dialog to allow/deny apps calling out if you don't allow it to record what it is to permanently do if it sees the same call again from the same app.
Little Snitch will post a dialog with allow/deny buttons.  But there is also three tab buttons; once, until quit, forever. "Until quit" is the default.  So it won't nag about the same call again until that app quits but it will if you relaunch that app and the app makes the same call out.  Choose "once" will allow that one call to be placed but will cause LS to nag the next time that app tries to call even if you haven't quit.  Choose Forever and it will never nag again about that specific all attempt.
You need to train LS which apps you want to permit calling out and which ones you never want to allow calling out.  You will of course initially be nagged quite often as you are seeing.  But if you train LS to always allow the ones you want to allow eventually there will be fewer and fewer dialogs since your habits don't change that radically in the way you use your own machine.

Help! I have to keep entering my wifi WEP password every time I slide my iphone 4S on  again.  It doesn't store the password as it should.

The use of WEP is not recommended for compatibility, reliability, performance, and security reasons; WEP is insecure and functionally obsolete. Any reason you're using WEP? I ask, because you might as well not have any security at all, & this is most likely your issue.

  • WHY do I have to reset or unlock my Apple ID every time I access Itunes through my Iphone 3G?

    Iphone 3G, iOS 4.2.1
Keeps requiring me to reset/unlock my apply ID!!!!   This seems like it keeps asking for credit card.  I put "none" which it works, then it'll stop the next day.  Very annoying.   I DO NOT want to list my credit card info on itunes, since apple is not secure.  I had my account hacked through my Iphone, which in turn the hacker charged my itunes account for over $1000 with $50 increments.

This same exact thing started happening to me a few days ago.
Every time I open the iPod app - I'm prompted for User/Password.  I even changed my password, thinking I forgot it, and still - insists that I enter this information.  If i hit OK or Cancel it just keeps asking like a never ending loop.
Eventually, when I do fill out the info, it will go away until I re-open the iPod app.  This is more of an annoyance than a real issue - but if it's a bug, I hope it gets resolved.
Any support in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

  • TS2972 why do I have to turn sharing off and back on each time i use my apple tv?

Whenever I switch to apple tv and try to access my files, I get the instruction to turn sharing on. When I check, the sharing is already on. I have to turn it off and then turn it back on for the apple tv to detect it.

There is somewhere on here a thread where some folks have done some in depth technical digging into the problem.
It seems that in those cases there are multiple 100+ TCP ports being held open between itunes/mac and the atv. I see this x3 with all my atv's when they were connected via ethernet cable. Home sharing is running out of ports to use in simple terms.
What on earth port forwarding can do for the problem i do not know, you can only forward to 1 device, how would this fix the probelm for subsequent atv's on the network?? It would be madness to do this anyway why would you open a secure port to the internet just to get a media player working
There are so many reports of this problem manifesting itself in various ways it is hard to give a simple answer
Some of the solutions just do not make any sense, solutions that work for some are opposite for others wifi <-> ethernet <-> wifi
I am convinced this is an internal networking issue at a base level, nothing to do with IP6,DHCP/Static/PortForwarding etc. Sleeping atv's may exagerate the problem
It will end up being a . or a , in the complied code somewhere in the last update of either itunes or ios
Someone on that thread has written some slick code to check for this problem and restart itunes if it finds it which may be a solution if it cant be solved other ways
My problem went away when I moved my atvs to wifi connection only, but then I know my network is otherwise good

  • Why do I have to click connect next to 802.1X every time?

My certificates are trusted. My WPA Enterprise profile has the proper credentials. Ask to join new networks is checked. When I unplug my ethernet cable and use the wireless networking environment at my workplace, I'm always prompted to choose the network from a dialog that pops up. Whether I choose the network I always use or whether I cancel, my IP address gets self-assigned until I go into the Network prefpane and click "connect" next to 802.1X. Why do I have to do that every time?

Open iTunes preferences and go to the Store pane, then uncheck everything, esp. the Always check for available downloads.
oh yeah, VERY IMPORTANT... forgot to tell you that you have to be signed in to your itunes store account to make these changes, or to even see what the current settings are. If you are not signed in to your itunes account the whole pane will be dimmed and will show all boxes unchecked... HOWEVER, once you sign in to your account and open the store pane, you will be able to see the current settings AND the "Always check for available downloads box is checked by default.

  • My Apple Tv is connecting to the Wifi network but is not connect to the internet.  So when I look for it on my Airplay it doesn't come up.  I have 3 other ones already working on the network and they are all fine.

My apple TV is finding and connecting to the Wifi network but then says it is not connected to the internet and then I cannot find it on the iPad through airplay.  I don't want it connected to the internet (as in www.) because for the use I have I only need to use the Apple tvs locally in a sports hall as scoreboards.  I have 3 others working on the same router and they are working fine (as of yesterday)
On my screen I see (obviously not written like this)
    network connect- yes
    signal strength- fine
    Ip address- fine
    DCN- fine
    Activation- Failed
This is the only negative I can find and the statement that the Apple TV has connected to the wifi but is not connected to the internet.
Where has it gone wrong for me. Please help

It is not properly connected to the network.
Make sure location is set correctly
DNS should be on auto (settings - general - network)
    Try ethernet
Signal strength on device won't account for issues, you would need a network report from istumbler, netstumbler or similar. This will show accurate signal strength along with noise and nearby networks
