Why do I have XMP files in my iPhone pictures?

I have been an iPhone user for the past 3+ years. When I connect my iPhone via USB to my Windows PC I can open Windows Explorer and see what files are on my iPhone. Starting this month, I started seeing .XMP files in my pictures for the first time. The files show no images and all are 1.24 K in size.
Questions:
1) What are these .XMP files?
2) Why are they showing up on my iPhone all of a sudden?

Hi Comstock2544,
I had the same problem during the last year.
According to some experts, .XMP are metadata files, something called "sidecar" files: they contains information about some of your pictures (e.g.: date of capture), and must be inthe same path of them to work properly (although probably useless on our pc).
And... they aren't actually of Adobe: they are standardized widely.
In our case, they are created by iOS when you crop and modify some pics with th iPhone tool. They serve to store information about your editing, without lose information from the original pictures.
In facts, if you crop one of your pics and save it, when you come back to re-crop it, you can see that the rest of the image cropped is still there.
A friend friend was able to delete them (I had 3) just deleting them, but I'm still unable to do that with the new ones. Anyway, you can just ignore tham and it'll be fine.
P.S.: You can open them with the notepad to see what info they store.

Why do I have duplicate notes on my iphone all my settings are check for the icloud only on iphone, ipad and macbook?

This is not due to malware on your iPhone. There is no known malware capable of infecting an iPhone, unless it has been jailbroken (ie, hacked to run apps from outside the App Store).
Someone hacked your e-mail remotely. Changing your password should remove access, but the spammer can still spoof your e-mail address on the From line and continue sending messages that look like they're coming from you. There's not much you can do about that except alert your contacts and wait for the spammer to stop and move on.
Alternately, some e-mail accounts provide features that can allow a hacker continued access even after you change the password. GMail, for example, has a delegation feature that can be used to give someone else access, and hackers have been known to use this feature to maintain access across password changes. I am unfamiliar with Windows Live Email, but you should check for any similar delegation features.

  • Why do I have saved podcasts on my iphone when I haven't saved any podcasts?

A fairly basic question - Why do I have saved podcasts on my iphone when I haven't saved any podcasts?
And a possibly related question "Why do podcasts I have deleted from my phone often reappear, but in the cloud?".
And finally "How is the podcast app supposed to work?" and "Why doesn't apple even try to explain aspects of the app (i.e what "My Episodes", "Feed" and "Saved" is meant to mean).

    Good morning mickp99,
I'm going to start with your third question first ... there are two main ways to learn about our apps.    The first is the main product support page for the app online.  The second is the user manual for the device (your iPhone). Here are the resources for the Podcasts app.  The answers to questions one and two above may lie in the settings you have for downloading and syncing the podcasts you are seeing.  I've highlighted some key information for you below.  Click on the links for complete information.
iOS Apps - Podcasts - Apple Support
    https://www.apple.com/support/ios/podcasts/
Podcasts app for iOS: Browsing and searching - Apple Support
Podcasts app for iOS: Stream, download, and subscribe to podcasts - Apple Support
    Downloading
If you download a podcast episode, a copy of the episode is stored on your iOS device so you can play it anytime you like even if there's no Internet connection.
Browse or Search for a podcast.
Tap a podcast to view details.
Tap the download icon next to an episode.
The podcast will start to download and will appear in My Podcasts. When you use a cellular data connection, the maximum download size is 100 MB per episode.
    Subscribing
You can subscribe to your favorite podcasts.  Whenever a new episode is available your iOS devices will get them automatically.
Browse or Search for a podcast.
Tap a podcast to view details.
    Tap Subscribe.
Once you subscribe to a podcast it will appear in My Podcasts. The latest episode of the podcast will also begin to download.
Podcasts app for iOS: Managing subscriptions - Apple Support
    My Podcasts
Once you subscribe to a podcast, it'll appear in My Podcasts in the Podcasts app. Different parts and features of My Podcasts are described below.
View: Swipe down with one finger to switch between tile or list view.
Edit: Tap Edit to delete any podcast you're subscribed to or rearrange the order that your podcasts appear.
Subscription Details: When you tap a podcast that you're subscribed to, you can view the latest unplayed episodes under the Unplayed tab. If you tap Feed, you'll see all available episodes. If you've saved any episodes of podcasts you'll be able to view those under the Saved tab.
Notification badges: Once you've subscribed to a podcast, you may notice a badge on the Podcasts app. This shows the number of podcast episodes newly available since you last opened the app. Once you open the app, the badge will disappear until new podcast episodes are available.
If you're browsing your subscriptions in My Podcasts, you'll see red badges next to your podcasts if you're in tile view or just a number next to each podcast in list view. These badges show you the number of episodes of each podcast that are unplayed.
    Settings
There are two places you can change subscription settings for your podcasts.
Default settings: From your Home screen, tap Settings and then Podcasts. These settings are shared by all of your podcast subscriptions. These are known as default podcast settings.
Refresh Every: You can choose how often your iOS device checks for new episodes to your subscriptions. It's set to check every six hours by default.
Limit Episodes: You can pick how many episodes you see for subscriptions.
Download Episodes: The latest episodes of your podcasts will download automatically if your iOS device is connected to Wi-Fi.
Delete Played Episodes: If this is turned on, episodes will delete 24 hours after you finish playing them.
Use Cellular Data: If your iOS device has a cellular connection, you can allow downloads to use cellular data when Wi-Fi isn't available. This is off by default. Downloads using cellular data are limited to 100MB per episode. If an episode is larger than that, it won't start downloading until you're connected to Wi-Fi.
Podcast-specific settings: The second place you'll find subscription settings is within the Podcasts app. Tap a podcast subscription under My Podcasts and pull down with one finger to reveal the settings buttons. These settings are unique to each subscription. If you don't change anything here, the podcast subscription will just use the default settings. If you do make changes to a specific subscription’s settings, they'll only apply to that podcast.
Play: This setting lets you change the order in which a subscription plays. If you're listening to a news style podcast, you may want to set this to play the new episodes first. If the series is more episodic, you may prefer to play oldest to newest.
Sort Order: This changes the sort order of episodes that appear for a podcast (not its playback order).
Subscribed: When this is on, new episodes of this podcast will be marked as unplayed as they become available.
Refresh Every: You can choose how often your iOS device checks for new episodes to your subscriptions. It's set to check every six hours by default.
Limit Episodes: You can pick how many episodes you see for subscriptions.
Download Episodes: The latest episodes of your podcasts will download automatically.
Delete Played Episodes: If this is on, episodes will be deleted 24 hours after you finish playing them unless you've marked them as Saved.
    Inactive subscriptions
If you do not play or access a subscription within 15 days, your subscription to that podcast will go inactive and you will no longer receive updates to it. As soon as you access the subscription again it will refresh.
Podcasts app for iOS: Organizing your podcasts with stations - Apple Support
    Play iTunes Playlists
If you sync your iTunes Playlists from iTunes on your Mac or PC, any playlist containing podcasts will appear in My Stations in the Podcasts app for iOS. If you have a playlist that is a mix of music and podcasts, only the podcasts will show in that playlist in the Podcasts app for iOS.
Podcasts app for iOS: Playback controls - Apple Support
Podcasts for iOS: Sync podcasts - Apple Support
You can sync your podcast subscriptions, stations, and playback position between your iOS devices, computers with iTunes, and Apple TV.
    Here's what you'll need:
An Apple ID. Sign in to the iTunes Store with the same Apple ID on all your devices.
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 7 or later.
Mac or PC with iTunes 11.2 or later.
Apple TV with Apple TV software version 6.0 or later.
    Turn on syncing
Sign in with the same Apple ID on any computer or iOS device that you want to sync podcasts.
    iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    Tap Settings > Podcasts.
Turn Sync Podcasts on or off.
    Mac or PC
    Open iTunes.
Choose iTunes > Preferences, then click the Store tab.
Select "Sync podcast subscriptions and settings."
    Learn what syncs
When you sync podcasts, you also sync subscriptions, stations, and play position. Here's everything that syncs.
    Subscriptions
Subscribing. Syncing podcast subscriptions will download the newest episode for each podcast that you're subscribed to (but not previous episodes for that podcast). If you download other episodes for a subscription on a device, they won't automatically download to your other devices. See how to transfer episodes and playlists.
Unsubscribing. If you unsubscribe from a podcast on a device, all of your other devices will unsubscribe to that podcast. If you subscribe to that podcast again, all of your other devices will also subscribe again.
Deleting. If you delete a subscription on a device, all of your devices will automatically unsubscribe to that podcast. If you delete a podcast on your iOS device, iTunes on your computer will show the message "This podcast has been deleted from another device, but has saved episodes."
If you click Resolve, you'll see the message "Do you want to delete or restore syncing of the podcast?"
If you want to keep any episodes that you saved on your computer, click Restore Sync on the message. The subscription will sync back to your other devices.
If you want to delete the podcast and all its episodes, click Delete. If you delete a podcast subscription on your computer, it will delete the subscription on your iOS devices, including downloaded episodes (unless they're marked as Saved).
    Stations
When you create a station in iTunes on your computer or in the Podcasts app for iOS, it will appear on your other devices. Any station settings you change will also sync to your devices. If you delete a station on one of your devices, it’ll delete on every other device too.
    Playback position
Podcasts can remember your playback position between devices and computers, so you can always start where you left off. If Sync Podcasts is on for your iOS device, playback position will sync. However, you might need to turn on this setting in iTunes on your Mac or PC.
    Select iTunes > Preferences.
    Click the Store tab.
Select "Sync playback information across devices." It may take a few minutes to sync.
    Transfer episodes and playlists
Podcast episodes on one device don't automatically download to your other devices. If you want all your downloaded episodes to appear on your other devices, you'll need to sync your iOS devices to your computer over Wi-Fi or with a USB cable.
Connect your iOS device to your Mac or PC with iTunes.
    Click the Podcasts tab.
Choose which downloaded podcasts should appear on your iOS devices.
To sync a playlist of podcasts to your iOS devices, select it under "Include Episodes from Playlists." The playlist will appear in My Stations in the Podcasts app for iOS.
    Click Sync.

  • Why do I all of a sudden have xmp files?

I'm using Lightroom 5.6.  For the first time I'm noticing xmp files in my file folders next to my images and in LR I notice these images now have "Sidecar File" listed under File Name in the Library's Metadata box.  For all the year I've used Lightroom I've never had xmp files?  What is it?  Do I need it?  and what do I do with it?  What if I move some files out of a folder and into a different location, so I always have to make sure I also move the xmp file with it?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Michele

Thank you for the link!  I've read it and it kinda opens a whole new can of worms for me.  So if I understand correctly the xmp file stores Metadata because a .CR2 file cannot store the metadata inside of it.   And the storage of this information with the file is necessary if you make metadata changes in Lightroom, and then later want to open that file in a different program.  So if I ever decide to reorganize some of my raw files in Mac's Finder folders than all I have to do is make sure I move the xmp file along with it?  Not separate them? And then my other question is does the xmp file also store the changes I made in developer?  Like the white balance, exposure, lens corrections, etc...?

  • Why is Bridge creating XMP files in CS6?

I'm using the CS6 beta on a new set of photos.  All I've done so far is batch rename all the files (all raw, all CR2) and edited the IPTC metadata - to add my name, the project name, etc.  Now I've got a side-car file for every photo.  CS5 just included this stuff in the original file, why not CS6?

    Hi,
The 'Camera Raw Database' is written to a local directory on your machine, and won't travel (without an extra step) if you copy the CR2 file to another machine. If you use DNG then the metadata will be stored in the file.
If you store the camera raw settings in the Camera Raw database and plan to move the files to a different location (CD, DVD, another computer, and so forth), you can use the Export Settings To XMP command to export the settings to sidecar XMP files.
You may have been using, and wanting, sidecar .xmp files, but just had them hidden in previous Bridge versions. To hide the .xmp file from the Content panel's display, go to View> Show Hidden Files and toggle the checkmark OFF, by selecting it.
    regards,
    steve

  • Why do I have multiple files?

I have 2 of each of these files:  iTunes preferences, iTunes library extras, iTunes library genius, iTunes library, iTunes Music library, sentinel and I have 2 folders that are named album artwork. I tried to delete one of each but then everything got deleted from itunes but good thing that I had the files so I got everything back. Why is it that I have more than one of these files and where should these files be located in? because I have the files in different places in the music library. Please help me...I really do not want to mess things up so I'm afraid to even touch these files.

I'm not aware of a way to run multiple instances or different versions of photoshop at the same time on windows.
Assuming of course they are all installed on the same operating system.
On mac versions you can running two different versions of photoshop at the same time, but i don't think that's possible on windows where it
appears that only one version of photoshop can run at a time.

  • Why Do I have duplicates Files !?

    Hi Everyone
    I've messed up somewhere.
I've just upgraded to Iphone 4S got Ipad and subscribed to Icloud, within the same week.
    Big Mistake!
after trying to organize some files and synchronize my Idevices , my files are a mess !!
1 - I have duplicates music files in the Iphone music Library
2 - I have duplicates apps in Itunes application folder in my mac.
This is probably partially due to the fact I moved the entire Itune folder to nother location ( needed disk space ) although I made sure to relink it via the
    Itunes / Preferences / Advanced.
Can Anyone help me sort that mess out ?
    Thanks
    David

...This is probably partially due to the fact I moved the entire Itune folder to nother location ( needed disk space ) although I made sure to relink it via the
    Itunes / Preferences / Advanced.
You're not supposed to do it that way...
The way recommended by the support doc ht1449 is that you tell iTunes where you like your media stored from now on, then tell iTunes to consolidate all the media to that new location. Lastly you get to clean up the originals left behind on the source drive.
The way that generally works best is to move the entire iTunes folder to a new location and then reconnect to it by holding down option (shift on Windows) to choose the library.
Do the duplicate entries in your library work, or are some broken? Did you reimport the media folder after moving it?
You should be able to find some useful tools for cleaning up over at http://dougscripts.com/itunes/ or there is this post which explains how to remove dupes by hand (and, less usefully for you, the genesis of a Window removal script).

  • Why do I have Missing files from LaCie to Elements 9 Organizer on Mac

I am a new Elements 9 user and have a Mac OS 10.6.5.  I have attempted to load all my pictures from a LaCie external hard drive into the Organizer, but when I look at them in the Organizer very many of them indicate that the files are missing.  I have not renamed the files, nor have I moved them since they have been in the LaCie.  What in the world am I doing wrong!!!???

When I first moved pics into the Organizer, some were in folders on my laptop, some in the LaCie, some on the desktop etc.  I did subsequently move all pics into the LaCie from the various places, and then moved them again into the Organizer.  Maybe that confused the situation.  Should I remove all images from the Organizer and then  get all files from the LaCie once more?

  • Why can't i remove files from my iPhone?

I have audiobooks and music files on my iPhone and iPod that I would like to remove so that I can put new ones on and I cannot remove them in iTunes.  I never had this problem before iOS 5 and the latest update for iTunes.  I have tried clicking on the file and pressing the delete key and right clicking but the delete/remove option is no longer there.  I have searched the iTunes help file and cannot find any answers.  Does anyone know how to remove these files?  Thanks in advance for any help!

No one here knows why. No one can help you with so little information because we do not have a crystalball. You will need to provide detailed information about what happens when you try to buy an app in order to begin to help with your issue.

  • Why do I have extra songs in my iPhone playlist that are not on my iTunes library?

After doing the iOS7 update (and iOS7.0.2) I decided to add my music to my phone (I never had music on it before).
I discovered that there were 20 very random and obscure broadway songs that were on my iPhone in addition to the 60 songs I just synced. They had the iCloud icon by them, unlike the songs I had just added.
After doing research I found that the broadway songs were technically "purchased" on iTunes although they are not songs I would have ever purchased- in fact I have never once purchased anything on iTunes.  This isn't my worry though, I am assuming it must have been some random free download I did at some point?
I went to settings > music > and turned show all music off.  This did NOT work for all of them and only solved the problem 80%.  There are still 4 of the random song on my iPhone. They DO NOT show up in my iTunes library on my computer and don't even exist on my computer.
With the other songs I can left swip and delete but these 4 songs won't!  Why won't these four songs left swipe?
I am going crazy and have tried restarting my phone, restarting iTunes, re-syncing, turning off the iCloud.  NOTHING WORKS.
Please help.  I am a normally a very smart and tech-savvy person and I cannot for the life of me figure this out.  I don't want to wipe everything- which as a solution is a pretty weak solution.
Why won't certain songs left swipe to delete off my phone when I am in the music app?
Why do I have extra songs on my phone that don't appear on iTunes on my computer?
Where did these songs come from and how do I get rid of them?
    Much thanks!

I had the exact same issue!! Seriously p*ssed me off when I checked out my ITunes purchased items (via my computer) and noticed that most of the additional tracks listed on my IPhone playlist was listed there too. However, I never authorized any purchases!!  (I have actually written Apple Support asking for a full refund of all tracks listed on my purchased list)
Be careful when you swipe your finger to the left/right on those "additional" tracks on your IPhone playlist... I'm pretty sure that the cloud symbol is an option to download or automatically buy those tracks.
    Solution for the problem:
1 - go to your IPhone settings
    2 - choose "iTunes & App Store"
3 - go to "Show All" & "Music"
4 - turn off "Music" by moving the bar to the left (it should be a white color once you turn it off)
    Should solve your problem :~)

  • Why does CC have less file types than CS6?

I have both DW CS6 and CC installed on my system.  Can anyone tell me why CS6 has more file types available from the "file/new" menu than CC has?  For example, CS6 has 18 "HTML" types, yet CC has only 2.  Also, CS6 has a "get more content" link on the dialog, whereas CC does not.
Is there any way to get CC to have all of those file types available, or do I need to create the file in CS6 and then switch to CC for the rest of my work?

If you want those starter files in Dreamweaver CC, it's very easy to copy them across. Go to the following location:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS6\configuration\BuiltIn\Layouts (Windows)
    /Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CS6/configuration/BuiltIn/Layouts (Mac)
Copy all the files except the first four, which begin with HTML5_
Paste them into the following location:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CC\configuration\BuiltIn\Layouts (Windows)
    /Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CC/configuration/BuiltIn/Layouts (Mac)
You will need Administrator permission to do this.
Once you have copied them, you will find them in your New Document dialog box. The names won't be fully spelled out, but they should be recognizable.

    I have OSX 10.10.1 and CC 2014.
So I will open a PSD with an adjustment layer.
I turn off and on the "eyeball" in the layers panel. It counts as a change.
If you look at your document tab, you see a star at the end of the filename. It shows you made changes to  the file.
File > Save would remove that star and File > Save does dim on my Macbook.
If you are seeing it twice, the Preferences file may be corrupt. I suggest a reset.
Macintosh - CMD-SHIFT-OPTION immediately after you double-click the PS icon.
If that doesn't work uninstall/reinstall CC 2014 and updates'
Let me know how it went and mark the answer correct only if this solved your problem.

  • Hi why are my photos after downloading twice ,once in photo library and once in a file with the date why cant i delete a file its an iphone 4s please help

why are my photos after downloadon twice one as photo library the other as a file with date how can i delete one file same pics

Generally I would not use Facebook for sharing any photos, it compresses the photos substantially, and when you have shadows and dark colours you get visible "bands" where there should be subtle gradients, ie at sunsets and sunrises.
It sounds like you are using two methods to upload to Facebook:
    1. Sharing from within Aperture, which basically syncs Facebook with your Aperture album, so any changes made at either end gets synced, hence the deletions from Albums, although the original file should still be in your library, just removed rom the album. It is like a playlist in iTunes.
    2. Exporting pics and uploading to Facebook from the browser.
I am not sure how method 1 gets compressed, but I know that uploading hi-res jpegs to Facebook using method 2 results in poor quality images.
I wouldn't even bother comparing option 1 or 2, and they will both be poor images once you view them on Facebook, as opposed to viewing uploaded images on proper image sharing / hosting sites.
Your problem is not with Aperture, it is using Facebook for showing your work.
If you export pics form Aperture at high res jpegs or TIFFs your images will be fine.
If you insist to use Facebook as your way to share your work, then your workflow should be this:
    1. Right click images you want to share.
    2. Select Export version.
    3. Export as 100% size and ensure the export settings are set at 100% quality.
    4. Upload this pic into Facebook.
This will get you the best image size and resolution on Facebook.
    See how you go.

  • I have overwritten files on my Iphone 4

I plugged my Iphone 4 on my laptop with my Iphone 3 files still in Itunes. I've lost all my pictures and contacts, well, it basically went back to the Iphone 3 data and I'm MAD!!! How can I restore this? I have to reinstall everything. I mainly want my pics back. Any information will be gladly appreciated, thanks.

    Kenni901 wrote:
Nope. I just plugged the Iphone 4 in my laptop. It was my first time. I chose the option of adding my existing Itunes name or whatever to Iphone 4. The applications that I had on my Iphone 4 don't work. Just the applications from Iphone 3 that were added on there. My pictures on the Iphone 4 are the pictures from my Iphone 3... I have no pictures of my Iphone 4 that were on there.
If it was your first time syncing with that computer, what computer did you use to set it up? The iPhone can only be sync with 1 computer at a time and hence that is why you lost your photo because iTunes erased your files because you didn't sync with that laptop before.

  • HT1386 Why do I have duplicate songs on my iPhone but not in my library?

I have recently purchased a new album and now all of the songs show up twice on my phone but only once in my library.  How do I correct this?

I have a completely untested & unconfirmed hypothesis that "something" changed in the last iOS update with the way iTunes keeps track of which items are on the device. My guess is that it has something to do with being able to identify the same track whether on the device, in your library or in the cloud. Whatever the cause I found I needed to manually delete a bunch of albums on my iPad that were showing as dupes or without artwork which didn't get resolved by syncing. Since I deleted them and resynced it has all been fine.
In the list type views swipe from right to left over the right hand side of an item (but keep away from the alphabet if it is showing down at the edge of the window). A red delete button should appear, tap to remove the item. In grid mode on an iPad holding your finger down on an item for about a second will produce a black & white cross at the top left, touch this to delete.
If all else fails backup and then restore the device.
