  • Time Machine keeps running out of storage space

I am using about 120 gigs on my 320gig macbook pro. I have a 250 g external HD plugged into my Airport Extreme with about 220 gigs dedicated to time machine. It will work for about three or four days, then it all of the sudden runs out of room.
I just went into the time machine application and it only has two save points now. It deleted everything else to make room for yesterday's backup. The weird thing is my finder window (in time machine) only says there are 19gigs available on my HD for yesterday's restore point. However, I have 199 gigs available on the next restore point. Coincidentally, I do have 19 gigs available on the external HD that the time machine file is stored.
My time Machine file size is currently 210gigs on my external drive, even though I am only using about 120 gigs total on the computer.
Additional info - I do have two profiles on the computer. One for me and one for my wife.

Most likely, you're using an app or feature that's causing unusually large backups. See #D4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for some common culprits, and ways to find out exactly what's going on.

    Icloud issues

Two iCloud accounts require two Apple IDs. So, if you want to set up a separate Apple ID for the other device, then you can set up a new iCloud account for that Apple ID. Everything associated with your current Apple ID will only remain with your current Apple ID with the possible exception of your Contacts, which you can keep on the device when you delete the iCloud account from it, and then you can merge them to the new iCloud ID when you sign it on.
All purchases made under the old ID will continue to be owned by the old ID.

The only way you can do that is to import them into your library first, but you may have done that already.
The easiest way to tell is to select a photo from the photostream album in iPhoto and ctrl-click on it, if it gives you the option to import it isn't in your iPhoto library, if it offers you the option to show in library it has already been imorted.

Have you checked how much space the backup will need.

  • What is application memory and why does my macbook pro keep running out of it?

what is application memory and why does my macbook pro keep running out of it?

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Please note that if the cause is a memory leak, installing more memory will not help. That's likely if you already have more than 4 GB of memory. Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 and later. Some details may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, reset the printing system. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • My iPad keeps showing a message that I have run out of storage space.  I purchased more iCloud space in settings, but this message is still showing.  It also won't sync when I plug in to my computer...??

My iPad keeps showing a message that I have run out of storage space.  I have purchased more iCloud space in settings, but I am still getting this message.  I also am not able to sync my iPad in iTunes when plugging in to my computer.

The storage space is the iPad storage space, not iCloud storage space. What size Ipad do you have?
How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

iCloud doesn't give you more storage on your device, it only gives you more storage in iCloud to sync data, store your backups, etc.  If you're running out of space on your iPad you'll have to delete some data off your iPad to free it up, such as syncing some of your music or other media off your iPad.
You can check how much free space is available on your iPad by going to Settings>General>Usage and looking at the Available number at the top.

  • Why does my new phone tell me that I am running out or storage space?

I have a new Samsung Galaxy S5. It is telling me that I am running out of storage space on the device. I have only just received this phone and can't access my email account. What is the problem here?

    Hi,
Difficult to answer without looking at the phone. If you go into settings and look for storage it will tell you how much is used for certain processes/documents.
Are you using a memory card and if so are you storing photos/videos on it as these take up loads of space and are best saved to Sd cards. Also are you installing large games?
    Thanks,

  • Message: You will run out of storage when your downgrade takes effect

In my email, I received a message today with the subject
You will run out of storage when your downgrade takes effect
I looked in my account and don't see anywhere where I've set it to downgrade. It's still set at the correct level. I checked the credit card to make sure it hadn't expired.
Any thoughts of what else I could check?
    Here's the email:
As requested, your iCloud storage will be downgraded to 5 GB on 02/27/2015. However, you are currently using 6 GB.
Unless you take action before your downgrade takes effect, backups to iCloud will stop, and apps will no longer be able to save documents to iCloud. You can either free up storage or cancel your downgrade to keep your current storage plan for another year.
To continue using these iCloud features without interruption, you can cancel your downgrade by selecting a different storage plan:
    1.
On your iOS device, go to Settings and tap iCloud
    2.
    Tap Account.
    3.
Tap your current plan, then choose from the options presented
For more information on managing your iCloud storage, please read this Learn how to manage your iCloud storage >.
    The iCloud Team

Sounds to me like you're not the original owner of the device.
Did you buy it secondhand? From where?

  • Macbook air running out of storage

I am relatively new to the mac world.  I have a macbook air 128g and am running out of storage space.  I am wondering if I can use icloud as a primary storage for my media files (Photos, music, video, etc).  Then I could potentially remove from hard drive to free up space.  I am concerned if this is possible and what the cons would be.  I am thinking that Itunes library and photos would not be as quickly accesible as it would be using the hard drive.  Please help...

iCloud can't be used for storage in that way. I believe sugarsync allows you to keep files online without having to have them on your hard drive.
A slightly fuller explanation here, you can keep files without having them on your hard drive by using SugarSync's 'Web Archive' Storing them in any other SugarSync location will cause them to be synchronized with your computer, a bad thing if you want to delete them from the the local storage.

  • Time Machine keeps running out of space

This is really annoying. Starting about 2-3 months ago, my Time Machine suddenly keeps running out of space. I have a MacBook Pro bought in 2009 summer with 500 GB Hard Drive. My Time Machine drive is als 500 GB. I currently have 117 GB left in my MacBook's hard drive, and 65 GB left in my Time Machine's drive.
As of this moment my Time Machine only have 1 backup that was done Yesterday. It's trying to create a new backup, but can't because apparently it needs 69 GB while I only have 65 GB.
Why does it need 69 GB? I can't imagine a reason why. I haven't downloaded anything more than 1 GB, if even that much, most likely not, and all I do on this MacBook is pretty much browsing. In any case, it's hard to imagine there's a 69 GB data change between yesterday and today. That's a lot of data by any standard.
    Thanks for any help!

If your internal disk is 500GB with 117GB free then you are using 383GB
and your Time Machine disk is too small. It is recommended that your
Time Machine disk is 2 to 3 times bigger than the data you are backing up.
There are also some tools you can get that will display details from the
logs to show you what is being backed up, it may be worth getting one of
those to determine why the backup is so big. I think the first thing you
should do is get a bigger disk.

  • My MacBook Air is running out of storage. Will an external hard drive work for me?

Good afternoon, Apple support forums! I recently made a BootCamp partition, and now my MacBook Air is running out of storage (about 13 GB left), and I realize that I cannot expand the storage on my Macbook Air without some DIY technical work. I looked into alternatives and came onto external hard drives (I'm looking at the LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 USB 3.0 Mobile Hard Drive - 2 TB, but this question is for external hard drives in general). I was wondering, just in case, if I could use it not for backup (as I already have an Apple AirPort Time Capsule) but as added on storage for my Mac. Also, would I have to keep the external hard drive plugged into my Mac 24/7 to have access to the files stored on it? Thanks in advance for any help!!

    1. Yes, you can.
    2. You only need to have it plugged in when you're accessing data on it.

  • I'm running out of storage

I have a 16gb iPad Air with IOS8.0.2 and am running out of storage space.  I have deleted everything I can think of,. In settings I see my apps are using only 167mbs, but in iTunes when I did a back up  it shows that the bulk of the storage is being used by "other".  What could that be and how do I clear it?

I've found that the biggest space grabbers are Photos, Podcasts, Magazines, Music, Movies, TV Shows, and iBooks ... so, I would check those and eliminate what you don't want to keep on your iPad. I've got 20 GB with just two - Photos and Podcasts.
ALSO go to usage in the settings and see what apps may be way too large to keep on your iPad for how little you may be using them. It's under "Manage Storage" in the middle section of the window, when you get there.
I've got a 64 GB iPad and I'm still running out of room. I guess I'll have to go for the 128 GB one next time ... :-) ...
