Why Do I Need a Credit Card to Show Artwork from CD's That I Own Legally?

In Windows Media Player the album artwork shows up right away, but with itunes they tell me I need and account, and that account needs a credit card, why? I do not plan to buy anything from apple as I merely want to use what I own legally, I want the artwork from my CD'S to show up on itunes and on my ipod and do not think that my credit card needs to be part of that simple request. Please advise?

Artwork is only available for albums that are for sale in the iTunes Store. If Exile on Main Street is not something that iTunes sell, you'll have to find your artwork elsewhere. As Roger said, Amazon is usually a good place to start looking. Also, a Google Image search may find what you're looking for.
I believe that the Command - I equivalent on a Windows machine is Control-I. However, if you right click on the song, Get Info should also be one of the options. It's also an option from the File Menu, I believe. Poke around, use the Help function (which has a list of keyboard shortcuts, by the way), you'll find it.
Only Apple would know why they need or what certain information. Generally, it's pretty easy to dummy a phone number if the field is required and you don't wish to give out that information. I find all 7s works fairly well.

Just because you are being asked to enter your credit card details doesn't mean that it will be charged for your purchases.

The reason you need a credit card is that to comply with child online privacy protection laws, the CVV or security code provides parental consent for the purchases that will be made. You will need to do that before continue and you can even switch back to your debit card after you finish the setup. The article below will explain further.

If the app also has in-app purchases included, then you need a credit card on file in case you purchase something from within the app.

you can make your account - nothing will be charged unless you buy. the cover art is free!
just set up an account it shouldnt be that a problem!
if really do not want to - you can buy software that will search your artwork - even if you just have the song title.

This is nothing new. A valid form of payment is required unless you originally set up your Apple ID to not require a credit card. Check your Apple ID account. Maybe the expiration date ID past.

If the game is shown as "free" in the App Store, it is completely free to download, but many apps have "in-app purchases" intended to separate you from your money.
The solution is simple - don't use those apps. Uninstall them and write a review in the App Store explaining their underhandedness.
To disable "in-app purchases" go to Settings > General > Restrictions and turn "In-App Purchases" off. Don't forget your Restrictions passcode.

Are there any other options? Or are the financially challenged doomed to wallow in album artless dejection? Again, I would point out that I never had any problems with WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER. (see organizing by artist/album discussion threads)

This is not the only way to obtain artwork.
Go to Google Image Search and type in the artist/album name and click on search images.   Double click on a picture you like, then at the top of that page click on "see full size image".   When you get that image, simply copy/paste it into the space for album artwork in iTunes.
 Make sure you select the album in the browser of iTunes before you copy/paste.  
If you don’t want to copy/paste, then iTunes Art Importer is a nice free program to do it for you.
Just to be clear, you'll need a credit card to "create" an iTunes store account assuming you don't have one already.

Why do I need a credit card number on file to download free apps?

I've had this itunes account for several years. The last CC that I had on file for making purchases has been lost (and reported as such). So, obviously my payment information regarding that card is no longer valid and I can no longer make purchases. Understandable.
I am, however, still waiting for a new card to be sent to me before I can go in an update the information.
What is boggling me is that when I attempt to download updates or other free applications, itunes (on my phone) keeps asking me to sign in and provide payment information (which I do not have). It will not let me download any free apps or updates without it.

2. How do people who use gift cards or paypal use this function on their iphone/itouch? (or, really anyone who either doesn't have a CC or doesn't want to use it). There's GOT to be a way when I see other people walking around with their iphones/itouches dl'ing free apps just presumably without a linked credit card on their account. Right?

You can create an App store account without a credit card, however that won't help you with updating your previous purchases. Apps are DRM protected, and tied to the account that was used to originally purchase them. There is no way to overcome this DRM protection or transfer them to another account(Itunes support can if you contact them). If you want to create an App store account without a credit card, follow the directions here, but bear in mind the DRM protection mentioned. If you use this account to download free apps, you will have to use this same account for all future updates:

It should not unless you're trying to gift it, but may place an authorization hold on the card. If it gets charged except as noted, ask the iTunes Store staff for assistance.

Why won't apple let me buy my update if i have only itunes cards? I don't understand the point of using a credit card even for buying the applications? Talked to Apple and apparently it's only a canadian problem and it has something to do with our government taxes. So that means that the only way to do it now is to have a credit card. That still makes no sense to me because we're aloud to purchase music and other items such as ipod games and there technically applications but apparently there not? And the stuff in the App Store is applications, Why can't i just buy my update?

I recently was trying to add an older 3G IPad to my Verizon account. Went through all the steps online and then went to check out. We currently have 4 phones and 1 other IPad on this account. Anyway everything is fine until I go to check out. The total for this transaction was $0.00 but Verizon still wanted a credit card to complete the transaction. Why would a $0.00 transaction require a credit card. In today's world why would you even want the responsibility of taking that information if no money was due? Furthermore I asked the online chat person why and they said for verification purposes, really a dumb answer as I was logged in to my Verizon account already to do the transaction. Needless to say I did not complete the transaction. I refuse to give out credit card information when there was no money due, especially considering I refuse to have a credit card. Furthermore I am not giving out debit card information that is tied directly to my personal bank account. Note to the people who do your website coding. Don't require a credit card for a $0.00 transaction when the person is already logged in to their Verizon account. Probably not a big deal to Verizon as they only lost the activation fee and the $10 a month charge to have the device plus the possible uptick in data usage. It seems like a really dumb business decision on their part though.
