Why do I need local copies of all my iOS Apps?

Now that my iPad and iPhone back up to iCloud do I need to keep local copies of all my Apps in iTunes? When I restored my iPhone 4S from iCloud it downloaded all the apps from iCloud rather then from my local copies. My Mobile Applications folder is 15GB and since I can't run iOS Apps on my computer I really don't see the point of keeping this massive archive around given my limited 256GB MacBook Air's storage.
Any expertise is appreciated! I'll try moving the files to my external and seeing if anything goes horribly wrong.
Best, Alex

Update
I tested my theory by deleting an app from iTunes. The app still showed on the Apps spring board organizer view in iTuens but not in the left hand list. After I Sync'd my iPhone it was no longer present on the iTunes spring board organizer or on my device. Looks like you still need to keep local copies of all your apps in iTunes. Unchecking "Sync Apps" presents you with a warning that app apps and their data will be removed.
It just seems useless to have local copies of iOS apps on my computer. I'm using more drive space for iOS apps (15GB) on my computer then Mac Apps(10GB)! I thought that my mac was demoted to a device and the cloud was now the truth!
May I suggest, the addition of a check box on the Advanced iTunes preference that says "Keep local copies of App Store purchases" so that I may uncheck it. Keeping a local xml feed of what apps I've purchased and maybe a local copy of the high res icon artwork should be sufficent to facilitate this. (Naturally there's a good amount of work to do under the hood on iTunes, the iTunes servers and in iOS as well.)

Primarily because those third party apps are just that, they are not Apple apps, and each have their own requirements for activation.

  • Need help with languages issue in iOS app created in Flash Pro CS5.5

    Hello all,
I'm using Flash Pro CS5.5 on a Mac running Snow Leopard to create an iOS app by publishing with 'AIR for iOS' from inside Flash Pro. Everything works great except after I submit my app to the Apple App Store and it is approved, the App Store listing claims that the app is available in a ton of different languages including English, German, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, etc. Since this app is a word game and all the words are in English, this is a pretty significant issue.
If I view the binary details for the app in iTunes Connect, it shows that localizations are active for all of the different languages. This information is read from the .ipa file that is submitted.
If I unzip the .ipa file, I can see that folders have been created for all of the localizations (i.e. en.lproj, es.lproj, fr.lproj, etc.). If I delete any of those folders, the .ipa will give me a 'resources modified' error at install.
I have also tried setting the plist attribute 'CFBundleLocalizations' to 'English' by editing the 'app.xml'. I have verified that the attribute has been changed correctly but it does not solve the issue. All of the localizations are still active.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you try workaround given at http://forums.adobe.com/message/3976641 and post back your findings.

  • Why my software needs Local Admin? Windows 7 App Compatibility

    Hi
I have a software that works great on Windows 7
My problem is that I can run it only with local admin. if I'm logged in with a standard user - I get errors and the software doesn't open. no errors in the event viewer
Usually what I do in those cases is searching the registry or the folder that the user needs a modify permission and add it
Sometimes I use procmon if I can't find it manually.
in this case - procmon didn't help me :/. no "Access Denied" rows at all...
I tried to add the user to the "Power Users"\"Distributed COM Users" group and I still get the same error.
I tried to use the compatibility tab though the software works perfect on windows 7, my only problem is the prerequisite of local admin I'm trying to remove.
Is there any tool I can use to find out what the software does that requires local admin rights?

    Hi,
Firstly please refer to this article to troubleshoot an application that cannot run as a standard user:
An Application Cannot Run as a Standard User
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd919180(v=ws.10).aspx
Some programs are designed to perform legitimate administrative actions and therefore require administrative permissions. There is no idea to run it without administrator.

If you've never used this device with your account, it is most likely a security procedure to verify that it is you using the account on a new device and not someone else hacking your account.

  • How do i back up all the iOS apps contained in iTunes on my Mac?

Hi, I know we can burn purchased music to disc, but how do I burn all of my downloaded iOS iPhone/iPad apps for safe-keeping in case my Mac dies?

You can backup your iTunes library any number of ways. An external hard drive using Time Machine or any other backup software would be one way. You can also backup the library to DVD. Read both of these articles.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1382
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751
Of course you can always download the apps again at no charge as long as you use the same Apple ID that you purchased them with.

  • Printing from iPad - Why do I need third party app to print to a local network printer??

Why do I need to pay for a third party app to print to ALL local network printer?? I understand that only some printers are compatable with iPads, but yet application like "iCanPrint" allow me to print just fine to a printer connected to my network. Why can't Apple include this as one of its features? Technology is apparently there?

For that, and the many other apps to work, you need to be running a pc or Mac on the network.  The answer is drivers.  Every printer in the world needs a driver.  There simply is not enough space on a pad to load every possible printer driver that might be in play.  in the pc world, the operating system comes preloaded with hundreds of common drivers, and when you buy and install a new printer, you download the new drivers for that new printer.
That all just will not work on a pad or phone.  So apple flipped the issue upside down, and said...'here is the printer driver we will make standard for its devices.  We call it AirPrint.  Include this in your printer'.    A lot of manufacturers have, and more printers are enabled each month.
So your choice is pretty basic.  You can buy an AirPrint enabled printer and print directly to it, or buy a non AirPrint printer, or use the one you have, and rely on your pc to act as the translation device to manage the print job.

  • Why do I have multiple copies of Pages

I should say that this is not specifically related to Pages, I have multiple copies of all the iWorks apps on my computer but because I could not find a general iWorks forum I decided just to post about Pages with the asumption that it would be the same for the other iWorks apps.
I have the pre-update iWork 09 version 4.5 that was installed from Disk when i first bought my Mac.  I have since upgraded my Mac to Mavericks and upgraded pages (and iWorks) to the new iCloud versions 5.2
When I go into my Applications folder, I see a subfolder in there called iWork 09, and in that folder is the old 4.5 versions, but I also see the new versions of the apps as seperate apps in my Applications folder.
    See pictures
Basically all I want to know is if I App Delete the old iWorks 09 versions, will it affect my access to the updated versions, because it seems to me like I have two sets of iWorks apps (one old and one new) and of course I only need the new one

iWork 09's Pages is version 4.3. Yes you have to versions. They hare 2 different applications with the samme name. I wouldn't delete iWork 09 as it has about 100 more features than Pages has. But if you have it on a disk you can as you always have to possbility to install it again from the disk.

  • Why do I need consolekit or dbus?

I currently run DWM as my window manager, and the last line of my .xinitrc is:
    exec ~/scripts/startdwm
I see a lot of others have something to the effect of:
    exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session ~/.bin/startdwm
What is the purpose of this?  What am I missing out on by not starting with consolekit or dbus?  What is the best practice?

jasonwryan wrote:There are wiki pages on both of these: please research topics before asking questions here:
I did some research before coming here. My initial post was not very descriptive, and for that I apologize.  Let me try to explain myself better.
In the quest to learn more about the dark corners of my Arch Linux machine, I'm picking out components and learning more about them. Currently in the hot-seat are dbus & consolekit.  I'll break down my experience so far with each of them separately, [hopefully] for the benefit of clarity.
    dbus
As do most archers, I started out with the Beginner's guide. Here is what it says about dbus:
Arch Wiki wrote:Note: dbus is likely required for many of your applications to work properly, if you know you do not need it, skip this section
In other words, "just install dbus 'cause you probably need it".  I had no idea whether or not I needed it, so I just installed it, as was recommended. However, I'd like to note that this seems to deviate with The Arch Way. The arch way stresses simplicity and code correctness over convenience, so to ask the user to install something without explaining why seems out of place. The more typical approach throughout the wiki is to explain why, like "install mesa for 3D support" or "install alsa-mixer to control sound".
Next, looking at the dbus Arch Wiki entry, it's clear that dbus is a system for easy inter-process communication, but I still have no idea why almost everyone needs to install it.  Won't apps requiring dbus for IPC have dependencies on dbus, and then install and use dbus like any other dependency? If not, don't I need to know what common applications use dbus, as well as how and why they do so?  This is where my confusion lies.
    ConsoleKit
The Arch Wiki ConsoleKit entry explains:
Arch Wiki wrote:ConsoleKit is a framework for managing user sessions, and permissions.
What is not done already that ConsoleKit solves with its session management?  What does ConsoleKit do with permissions that isn't handled by either the Linux kernel or sudo/su/chmod/etc...?
The ConsoleKit Official documentation comically avoids answering this:
    ConsoleKit Documentation wrote:
    Defining the Problem
    To be written.
The Arch Wiki ConsoleKit entry further explains:
Arch Wiki wrote:Some of the most common usages of ConsoleKit is allowing non-root users to mount removable media, and suspending/shutting down the computer through common desktop applications (ie: thunar, nautilus, the gnome shutdown menu, etc).
Why is this better than just using sudo for mounting media and shutting down / restarting?  If I can do some cool stuff with ConsoleKit managing my X sessions, sign me up, but tell me what I can do & where to start.
If there is nothing new that ConsoleKit does, and some apps just arbitrarily decided to use it as opposed to more common components for certain functionality, then how do I know that before using those apps? If it's just guess and check that's fine, but I feel like I'm missing something here.
Also, is there a best-practice way to launch several apps under consoleKit, as opposed to this "dirty workaround":
Arch Wiki wrote:A dirty workaround is to have the entire session started by a second script (don't forget dbus-launch, it's likely you need it too).
And again with the "you probably need dbus" without explaining why.
My poorly-thought out original post begged to be dismissed with a "google it". Hopefully I have better explained myself, and someone can point me in the right direction.  If I've just stupidly missed something basic (most likely the case, I'm somewhat new to all of this), have mercy on me and kindly point me in the right direction.
    Thanks!

  • With iCloud, do we need to store ios apps on our desktops anymore?

Now that everything is stored in iCloud, our iOS devices sync wirelessly, is there any need for ios apps to continue to be stored on our desktops? Why would iTunes on my Mac need to continue downloading the latest iOS app updates when I already updated my iOS device directly? I notice that when I update apps on my iPhone for example, they are also downloaded to iTunes on my Mac (even though I no longer plug my iPhone in to sync with it).
I know I can turn off "automatic downloads" for apps in iTunes, but what about all the apps that have already been downloaded? Can they be deleted to save space on my desktop?

I'll answer my own thread with another thread that had a great response. Hope this helps someone!

  • How can I prevent deleted mail from ending up in "All Mail"     and "Archives"?  To my horror, I've emptied these boxes and lost all my mail from all my boxes  (and why do I need to enter this question three times?"

How can I prevent deleted mail from ending up in "All Mail" and "Archives"?
To my horror, I emptied these boxes and lost all my mail from all my boxes .
All mail also disappeared from my iPad, I suppose because they are "synched"
(Also, no offense, but why do I need to enter this question multiple times?)
    Thanks for any thoughts.

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

  • When I change my email account's password, Thunderbird deletes all my local copies of my emails

I have a Microsoft Office 365 account I access through IMAP in Thunderbird. None of the Thunderbird "save local copies/archive/etc." options seem to actually work like they did for my Yahoo POP3 account, which could be related to my real problem, but I haven't tried too hard to fix that because downloading all the emails gives me offline access anyway. Now the real problem:
Whenever I change my password through the Office 365 webpage, the next time I open Thunderbird it tries to access that account before I can stop it, gets the wrong password, and then deletes its entire cache of my emails, so it has to redownload them once I put the right password into Thunderbird. This redownloading takes forever. How can I stop it from deleting them in the first place?

delete the password in Thunderbird, before you change it anywhere else.
Thunderbird is not very smart, but it does know if a password is missing from it's store.

The iPod backup that iTunes makes does not inlcude synced media like apps and music. Those items should be in your iTunes library.
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
