Why do I need to keep all of the old backups?

Yes, I know it is great, but it uses a lot of disk space (my back up is 100 gb, I should a need a 2 tera external hard drive to keep them all!). Is it OK if I manually delete all previous ones (a drag, I know, but might be the only way)

Thanks for the replies, and yes, you are right, it is not using the space I thought it was but much less. I am doing what you two suggested here, I am backing up everything from scratch. The thing I don´t understand, though, is ... Why, if when the disk runs out of space TM automatically deletes the oldest one, I can´t do the same manually?
Time Machine's incremental backups back up only the things that have changed since the last backup, which is why the backups can be quite small. New and modified files are added to the Time Machine disk in their entirety; everything else gets a special type of alias - a hard link - that simply points to wherever the real file was last stored (the "wherever" is more a "whenever": it points to the backup that contains the real file). The files aren't moved around; the pointers save all that trouble.
So, let's say you have your original backup, A, and interim backups B and C. You have a new file in backup B, so it doesn't exist in A. When backup C is done, it uses only a pointer to the file in backup B, because you haven't modified the file. What happens when you manually delete backup B? The file disappears and the pointer in C doesn't have anything to point to! Time Machine knows, when it deletes stuff, what's real and what's a pointer, and if it has to change pointers, and so on.
This may not always be an issue if you have a current copy of a file on your drive - in the Now, so to speak. Unless, of course, you modify it and then want to get the previous version (one of the handiest things about Time Machine).
(And Time Machine does erase files when it deletes backups: you can't always get at all the modified versions of a file, for instance, if those dates disappear; and, if you create a file that's stored in backup B, and then you Trash it later, when B is deleted, so is the file and all the pointers to it.)

  • Why doesn't V8.01 keep all of the favicons next to web pages as previous version did?

A lot or maybe most of my bookmarks are lacking the web sites favicon even after double clicking on the bookmark. All that is visible is a small black rectangle whee the favicon should be, and then the usual web info.
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Thanks for your help
I installed the first addon only. I can't tell if it is doing anything yet or not.
Even clicking on my list of bookmarks only helps a little.
But more importantly, why is Firefox getting worse as they upgrade?
Chrome works sooo much better it just doesn't have the addons yet to use it full time.
3.??? was soo much better then 5 was ok 6 was worse now 8 seems even worse but I've just had it installed for 2 days.
Maybe other people have a different plan of attack.
    See you,

  • Do I really need to keep all the preloaded apps that came with my MacbookPro 13'' mid 2010

Do I really need to keep all the preloaded apps that came with my MacbookPro 13'' mid 2010? Which one are necessary to keep from your experience. Thanks

Lots of apps are preloaded on a new MBP. Tell us which ones you don't think you need, and we'll tell you whether you can safely get rid of them.
However,  the total space used on your hard drive by all the apps that are preinstalled is very small, and if there's any chance at all that you may eventually want to use them, you might as well keep them handy.
By way of example, my own Applications folder contains everything that came from the factory preinstalled in it, plus 2.5 years of subsequent additions totalling 196 applications of all kinds and sizes. Still, it only occupies 12.5GB of my 500GB hard drive.

Hi, I need help and advice. Basically me and my ex partner both had iphones and synced it with the same computer under the same ID. We split up and now im trying to get all my apps and info onto my new laptop with a new account but it keeps asking me for the old apple ID which she is still using and she changed the password. i tried backing it up but still nohing. When i try to back up purchased items being apps etc its keeps asking for the old one. help

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. But you'll still need the password.
Once you have the computer authorized to use the account she could change the password again to stop you buying apps on her card (assuming it's not on yours!). It would lock you out of upgrading them too but they should work unless she uses the deathorize all feature.
It depends on how amicable the split is...

  • Why can I download and install all of the Oracle ATS products for free?

Why can I download and install all of the Oracle ATS products for free?  When I installed, I was not prompted for any licenses or to purchase anything.
I want to know why this is possible and if there are plans to charge for it in the future?

I don't know Oracle's ATS products specifically, but many of Oracle's products can be downloaded and used for free for learning purposes.
Typically, if you intend to use the products commercially then you need to pay for a licence, otherwise you are using it illegally.
This is usually described in the T&C's you agree to when you download the software.

Yes, it will do a full backup.
and if so, do I really need all the old backups on my smaller external drive?
Only if you want to be able to go back in time to those previous Time Machine backups.  When you plug in the new larger external drive, you will only be able to go back as far as the first day you plugged it in and ran the first Time Machine backup on it.

  • Deploy BPM application and keep all data of old tasks

    Hi all,
Currently, whenever i redeploy bpm application to weblogic server, all tasks information saved in database will be changed (the value of state attribute will be changed to 9). So i think it's not good in Production environment. I want to configure to keep all data of old tasks whenever deploy again.
Does anyone knows the solution for this ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Do you mean when you re-deploy the BPM composite application?
Do you overwrite the older version of the composite or deploy as a new version?
If you deploy a newer version, your existing task information should remain as it is otherwise it'll change to stale...

  • Can I change user profile of an IPOD but keep all of the music and information stored on it?

A friend updated my IPOD with all of their music with their profile. However, I would like to make changes but keep most of the music that was uploaded.  Can I change the user profile (username and password) of an IPOD but keep all of the music and information stored on it?

Your frend does not have the right/lience to give the music to you. You should delete that music.
If he set up the iPod with his iTunes account you should restore the iPod from a backup of the iPod that should be on your computer. That will delete his music but restore your settings.

  • Unable to sync or backup my iPad2 with the new iTunes. I keep getting the error ""iTunes could not back up the iPad because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPad.". I've deleted all the old backups but still get this.

I'm totally frustrated by iTunes and don't know how to solve my problem. Like a lot of people on here I'm not able to sync or back up my iPad2 with my iTunes (version 10.4.1.10). I'm running Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. My iTunes worked just fine until the 10.4.xx updates came out and since June I've not been able to back up or sync the iPad2.
When I connect and try to sync I get the error message, “iTunes could not back up the iPad because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPad.”
I've deleted all the old backups so there are none on my system. I've deleted iTunes and re-installed the 64bit version several times but it has not made any difference. I've read and followed several suggestions on these boards about how to remove and reinstall everything but none have worked yet. I'm stumped here.

I had the exact same thing with my shuffle - same error message saying that it was corrupt so I restored it (wiping everything in the process) and the same message came up as soon as it reloaded. Thank god I didn't try it with my iPod or iPhone first. So many issues with this new version of iTunes!!!!!!!!

  • Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  Only one Sparse Bundle, same name.

Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  There is only one sparse bundle but when I enter time machine I don't see my historic backups.  I use a synology DS212 for my time machine.  Started a new backup which is 218gb but it says 618 gb is occupied  therefore it looks like 2 or 3 backups are still on the disk. Before my NAS issues the last backup was in 2014.  As you can see there is a second sparse bundle from 2012.  Not sure what that is.

This is an old message now, but what happened to me similarly was:
I had a major computer crash and through complicated pathways ended up reinstalling (Mavericks) as a new user (long story).
At least I had good Time Machine backups on an NAS drive (Synology DS212j), or so I thought - when I started Time Machine up again, the old backup file was gone, replaced by a new one using my "new computer" name. The old file was gone both by directly mounting the NAS drive and by clicking "Enter Time Machine".
It's like I had {OldShareName}.sparsebundle and then it was replaced by {NewShareName}.sparsebundle, all of the old info vanished.
(I have spent a week finding old files elsewhere and have completed a satisfactory self-restore. It pays to "archive" [my own variation of] as well as "back-up".)
My belief is that if this were a wired-netword-drive, e.g. plugged right into my iMac with a USB cable, then the old file would have remained.
But this is an NAS drive, connected directly to my Airport wireless router, and I don't know the significance of the fact that it stores its Time Machine backups as "sparsebundle" files rather than simply as plain(er) files.
As usual when things get complicated with computers (not just Apple computers) there was never a warning message. Something like "YOU'RE ABOUT TO DELETE A TIME MACHINE BACK-UP FILE!!!" would have made my life a lot simpler.
BTW, I did try a "restore from Time Machine" option the first thing I had my "new computer" (old hardware, 2009 iMac) up and running, using Migration Assistant, and it ran for many hours and then failed in the wee hours - what that has to do with anything I'm not sure.
I'm not sure that I have a question about this other than "why do these things happen to me?", but it's a warning. Apart from that I've been very happy with the stability and reliability (but not the cost or set-up complexity) of NAS vs. directly-cabled external drives.

  • What is the exact name of the cable I need to connect my old hard drive from my macbook pro (it has been taken out of the computer) to my new macbook pro?  I need to transfer files from the old hard drive to the new computer.

What is the exact name of the cable I need to connect my old hard drive from my macbook pro, which has been removed from the computer, to my new macbook pro?  I need to transfere files from the old hard drive to the new computer.

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.
