Why do I never hear the second chime when resetting the PRAM?

I have tried many times to follow the directions in the Help topic "Restting PRAM" but I never "...hear the startup sound for the second time." What might I be doing wrong? Thanks for your input.

Cause you don't wait long enough.
Hold Option-Command-P-R down until the cycle repeats at least 2-3 times: BONG!--dark screen--optical drive recalibrates--dark screen--BONG!------->

  • Why can't I hear the phone ring when I call somebody, but if I put the speaker on it works

Why can't I hear the phone ring when I call somebody, but if I put the speaker on I can hear the ringing?

Don't jump all the way to restoring just yet.  Check to make sure there's nothing in the headphone jack, and nothing covering the microphones (including the noise cancelling microphone at the top next to the headset jack)
    1. Restart the device. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    2. Reset the device. (Same article as above.)
    3. Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 (If you don't have a backup, make one now, then skip to the next step.)
    4. Restore as new device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137  For this step, do not re-download ANYTHING, and do not sign into your Apple ID.
Test the issue after each step.  If the last one does not resolve the issue, it is likely a hardware problem.

  • Why can I not hear the person I am video chatting with?  They can hear me.

Why can I not hear the person I am video chatting with?  They can hear me...

    Hi,
    There can be several reasons.
    1) They have their Mic Off.
In iChat > Video Menu the Microphone Enabled (or Audio Chat Enabled in Lion) needs to be ticked.
    2) the System Preferences > Sound > Input tab Volume is not high enough ?
Slide it to the right (their end)
2a) the Mic selected here is not the one select in iChat > Preferences > Video section > Microphone drop down.
    3) there is an issue with the speed differences in the internet services you both have.
If they are fast and sending lots of data and your end cannot buffer fast enough frame get dropped to smooth out video.  There comes a point when the audio can no longer keep in sync and is dropped as well.
In iChat menu > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit set 500kbps at both ends
This also smooths out ISP variances.
    4) after that it tends to be combos of things such as Processors involved, the Speed of those Processors and the speed or bandwidth available to the computers involved.

  • Why can't I hear the first note until it loops around?

    Hello Everyone,
I have a littlr problem. I have quantized a drum pattern so that the kick drum is on every fourth of a bar. The problem is....I can't hear the first kick until it loops around. Any ideas as to why this is?
    Many thanks,
    JV

Look at the piano roll (or the event list) and make
sure that the first hit is on or just inside the
first beat of the measure. It might sound fine, but
if it's even a single tick in front of the first beat
of your sequence, then you won't hear it, since
playback starts at measure 1, beat 1, tick 1.
Most of the time when this problem occurs it is not because the note is behind the downbeat. And with note chase=on that shouldn't present a problem anyay.
And moving the beat one tick later than intended? If the tempo was right up there, say, 170 or something, maybe you wouldn't perceive that. But at slower tempos, a tick is a huge amount of time, especially for drums, and personally I wouldn't recommend changing the intended timing of your notes to suit the sequencer's inability to play things correctly on the downbeat, whatever the cause may be.
The easiest workaround for this (and it's not perfect, but still a workaround) is to start playback slightly before the downbeat.

  • Why can't I hear the person I'm calling???

Ok I know the subject line sounds like I'm a couple sandwiches short of a picnic.  But honestly just a couple days ago my Blackberry phone rang, I go to answer the call and I can't hear the caller on the phone, but they can hear me.  The only way I can have a conversation with anyone is by using my speaker.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this happening and how to correct the problem???

I spent sometime with their on-line techs, they restored my phone to factory settings but the same problem was happening.  Because I've still have a warranty on my phone, I was able to have it replaced.
If that happens to be your case, remember to back up or sync your phone with your computer.  You'll loose all your information if not.  Must be a batch of defective phones, we must be the lucky ones to have 2 of them huh?
    Good luck!

  • Why can't I hear the receiver of my call unless it's on speaker

Every time I make a call the receiver of my call picks up but I don't hear the dialing or anything on my end.  The screen indicates that the call is in progress but there's dead air on my end.  Only when I press speakerphone i can hear the person on the other end.  The phone is only 3 weeks old.

Have you removed the plastic protective film that is on the iPhone when it was shipped?

  • Why can't I hear the bbc i player since yesterday?

BBC demands the flash player. I heard many dramas  with your flash player there.  Monday night there was all in order. But since yesterday I can't hear anything, though I've installed the new flash Player version. But there is only silence  - and I want so much hear the stories of bbc 7.

Thanks for the solution.  I kept the plastic on there as a protector, but cut the bottom off and completely forgot about the top of it.  I feel stupid, but I'm grateful for the answer to the problem.

  • Why can't i hear the other party on my iphone?

I managed to solve this problem.
Here's how I arrived at the solution:
This morning I could hear the other party fine.
This afternoon I could not hear, except by using the speakerphone.
    How could this be?
What had I done "wrong" between the morning and afternoon?
It turns out, I had downloaded a new app (wi-drive) and updated another (Google Translate)
So I just deleted those two apps.
Lo and behold, I could hear the other person.
My advice: if you can't hear the other person, just try deleting the last apps you downloaded before the problem started.
It might just work, as it did for me.
    good luck

Typically this happens when a corporate Exchange account is added to the iPhone and the corporation requires a passcode to protect access to their system.

  • Why can't  attendees hear the sound that is embedded in my PowerPoint slide?

I have sound embedded in a PowerPoint presentation.  I can hear the sound on my computer but the attendees or participants don't hear the sound.  What do I need to do so that they will also hear the sound.

Audio on your computer is not transmitted via screen share. I suppose you could hold a mic near your computer speakers to broadcast the audio.
You can also try uploading the PPT(X) to the Share pod in Connect and see if the audio uploads with it, but it may not.

  • HT204291 Why I can' t hear the sound from my games while I am playing?

Why I can't here the sound when I am playing a game?

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • Why can I not hear the sound on my videos?

I cannot hear the sound on my videos after I convert them for iPod use on iTunes. I can hear the sound before I convert them - what gives?

Quicktime, Quicktime Pro and iTunes don't convert "muxed" ( muxed means multiplexed where the audio and video are stored on the same track) video files properly. It only plays the video and not the audio.
See:iPod plays video but not audio.
You need a 3rd party converter to convert the file with both audio and video.
Videora is one, but there are others.
