Why do I often get response when opening that the script chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xml:585 has stopped?

The above comes up when I am opening Firefox stating that the script has stopped. Please advise.

Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version and delete the Firefox program folder to remove any leftover files.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
* Firefox 8.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version if possible.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
It may not be necessary to create a new profile, so first try if it works with your current profile and if not then create a new profile.

• Why do i keep getting the msg unresponsive script Script: chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xml:1628 it would be helpful if I knew what this was

Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Firefox 9.0.1 and at the time of the problem I was using Facebook. This problem makes it impossible to close any open tabs (though you can open as many new ones as you care to) and Firefox becomes unresponsive for a short time. When you close Firefox, it thinks that one more tab is open than in reality there is.

Actually Safe Mode should be used only as a temporary step. Safe Mode may sometimes help to isolate the cause. By default Safe Mode disables all the extra '''Extensions''', themes ('''Appearance''') and '''Plugins''' in '''Tools''' (Alt + T) > '''Add-ons'''.

• When I clear history script:chrome://browser/content/sanitize.js:136 hangs, what is this?

When I "clear recent history" it hangs and "script:chrome://browser/content/sanitize.js:136" comes up and I have to stop the script to continue. This started within the last week.

On Windows, the file path is:
%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\%PROFILENAME%\downloads.sqlite
I renamed the file, but it did not work.
What I did was uncheck all of the checkboxes in "Clear Recent History..."
By one checkbox at a time, I cleared each item.
When I reached the "Cookies" item, I got the unresponsive script/JavaScript error, so I left that unchecked and cleared the rest of the items.
After I cleared everything else, I returned to the "Cookies" item, and I was able to clear it now.

• I try to restore my bookmarks from a json file but i get "warning: unresponsive script - Script: chrome://browser/content/browser.js:3580" message - please help

I have no idea why my bookmarks wont restore. I am confident that I even tried restoring them at the time of creation of the json file to make sure that they worked, and after i was confident i left them for a month or two then tried to restore them, but it does not work at all. I get Script: chrome://browser/content/browser.js:3580 (unresponsive script error msgs) and whether i click continue or stop script the bookmarks do not change. Please help - there is a lot of bookmarks there i was relying on.

Not sure if this is appropriate, but I have a similar problem. Yesterday I got an update from MS to my new Win 7 machine. Now all my bookmarks are gone except the three I have in the toolbar.
I have tried following the instructions here but it's not working. First: I can find the bookmark backup files, but don't have any html files there. They are listed as "bookmark-dates-number-a series of letters and numbers, then ==.json."
I'm confused as to what to do next.

• Whenever I try to "clear recent history" in Firefox 6.0, I get a messages saying a script ("chrome://browser/content/sanitize.js:133") is busy or has stopped responding. How can I remedy this?

Whenever I try to "clear recent history," which I try to do after every browsing session, I get a message saying "A script on this page may be busy or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Script: chrome://browser/content/sanitize.js:133" I used to get this periodically before I upgraded to Firefox 6.0 but now I get it every time I try to clear my recent history. This happens on both my home and work computers and I'm using Firefox 6.0 and a Windows XP Professional SP2 operating system on each computer. How can I remedy this?

That can be caused by clearing the cookies via [[Clear Recent History]].
* Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history" > [X] Clear history when Firefox closes > Settings
* Firefox > History > Clear Recent History or Tools > Clear Recent History
Try to exclude the cookies to see if that helps.<br />
Let all cookies expire when you close Firefox to remove unwanted cookies and keep the ones with an allow exception.<br />
Make sure that you do not clear the "Site Preferences" as that will remove all exceptions.
* Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Keep until": "I close Firefox"
If you use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the cookies then Firefox also tries to clear the cookies from plugins like Flash and starts a plugin-container process for each plugin and that can add extra time and can cause an unresponsive script error to appear.

• HT2648 I want to Repair Disk Permissions, but I do not have disk utility 10.4.3 on my Mac os X. How do I download it? Why did I not get it when I purchased the computer 2 years ago?

I am having frequent pop-up boxes. It is very annoying. It was suggested that I repair permissions, but when I try, my 2 year old computer. with OSX operating systems has an old desk utility, and I cannot use it. How do I acquire disk utility 10.4.3?

Any reason why you have not updated to the final version 10.4.11 of Tiger?
General advice on updating Tiger:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL170
And for Intel Macs here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL172
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• How do I fix seeing the message "Chrome://tnt2toolbar/content/yos.xml" every time I open Foxfire?

I don't know what other details to provide. My stated question pretty much says it all.

Thank you. This "sort-a" helped, but now I have a new problem. I stumbled across a drop-down window from the FOXFIRE program (starting from my "Program List"), and clicked on a "fix it" button. I now no longer get the message I wrote about earlier (I have no idea what the "fix it" actually did, but it worked). However, now I get the message: DO YOU WANT TO ALLOW THE FOLLOWING PROGRAM TO MAKE CHANGES TO THIS COMPUTER" every time I open Foxfire. I suppose I can just click "yes" each time, but it's annoying. I know how to make that go away, but if I do so, it will go away for ALL warnings, not just Foxfire. Don't I WANT to see that warning sometimes? How do I get it to NOT show up, but only when opening Foxfire? Is that possible to do?

• Why do i always get a message saying that the when trying to dowload the software update for iphone 4? it is a brand new handset and a clean install of itunes.

i am trying to update my iphone 4 to the latest software version as promted on itunes and it gives me a timed out message. and an error code (err = 3259) it was downloading fine and then once it reached the end of the download it just stopped and gave me the error message. does anyone know why it would be doing this? i have only just recieved my iphone 4 today and i only installed itunes on my laptop which has never had itunes installed on previously.

This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings. If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network. If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again. Error 3194 most likely indicates you do not have the latest version of iTunes installed Update to the latest version of iTunes.
