Why do images reload in develop module?

I get the "Loading..." message for about 5 seconds the first time I open a raw file in the develop module. I understand the reason for this. If I go to the next image and then come back to the first, loading is usually almost instantaneous. However, sometimes even after a very short time, the first raw file takes the full 5 seconds to load when I access it again. I thought that it should just reload from the Adobe Camera Raw cache. My ACR cache is set to 5GB and is only 20% full. I am using a Mac.
Jeff

Lightroom 2.x creates two types of preview - the first is the default version (let's call it the catalog preview) primarily intended for use by the Library module and the second is the Camera Raw Cache preview . The Camera Raw Cache preview is used in the Develop module to provide a high quality preview whilst Lr renders out the raw image into ram for editing. This cached preview (CR preview) can be shared between Lightroom and the Camera Raw plug-in. The cached CR previews are larger and of higher quality than the default catalog previews.
It's possible to define the size of the CR cache from within the Lightroom Preferences panel. Setting the cache size to high values will pay dividends if you tend to work with a lot of images within the Develop module because the cached CR previews have sharpening and noise reduction applied. So, fully up to date cached CR previews are immediately available next time you click on that image. To get the catalog previews to update adjustments such as sharpening and noise you need to revisit the Library module, which takes time and cpu cycles.
Getting back to the cached previews. As you move back and forth between images in the Develop module the cached CR previews will be used while rendering out the original goes on in the background. That being said, at some point you may reach a point were you have viewed more images than the cache can hold, so one by one they get deleted. Clicking on an image were the cached CR preview has been deleted forces Lightroom to read from the catalog previews. Fortunately, a new CR preview will then be created and made  With a small cache and many files you might find yourself using the catalog previews more often than would be the case with a large cache. The default CR cache is 2GB, but it can be as low as 1GB. However, with more recent high mega pixel cameras it is best to set it to 5GB or higher.
Tip: you can switch off the overlay message for loading and rendering from within the View Options panel (View menu in both Library and Develop modules).

I am not aware of any view mode in the Developer module that is similar to the Library module's Compare View mode. If the images you are trying to adjust were taken at the same time under similar lighting, you can select the settings of the image you adjusted and copy them to the other images. Select the image whose setting you want to copy and then click on the Copy button found in the bottom left side panel. This will display the Copy Settings panel. Insure the setting you want to copy are checked and any you don't want to copy are unchecked. Click the Copy button. Next, select one or more images you want to copy the setting to and click on the Paste button (bottom of left panel). The selected setting will be applied to the selected images. You can also perform a similar function when in the Library module but this time, look for the Synch Settings button found at the bottom of the right hand panel. Button names are changed but the dialog is essentially the same. Photos can be selected either in grid view or the film strip.

  • I have Lightroom 5. How do I rotate images in the development module?

    The heading says it all...

Well actually, it doesn't say it all
Do you mean rotate a few degrees to get the horizon level, or 90 degrees because the camera or software didn't properly recognize the photo was either landscape or portrait, or 180 degrees; or change from landscape to portrait without rotating 90 degrees; or what?

  • Why is the image on my screen changing when I switch between the library and develop modules?

I've noticed in the past couple of days that I will be refining an image in the develop module, feel I've gotten it the way I want it to look, and then switch back to the library module to export. When I do so, I notice the colors are quite different than they were just a second ago in the develop module. When I switch back to the develop module, it goes back to the way it looked in the develop module. How might I fix this?

Is what you see in Library the original, camera-embedded preview or is it just a messed up version of the LR-rendering?  You can test this by making a significant change to an image with the problem (Exposure -4 or Saturation +100) and see if the Library Preview also darkens (or the colors saturate) significantly or not.  You might also try explicitly telling LR to recompute the  Standard then the 1:1 preview to see if either of those show up in Library.
If the Library view never shows any LR adjustments and is always the camera-embedded JPG preview or a LR-preview from some days ago that never changes no matter what you do in Develop, now, then your Previews cache is likely corrupted and the entire should probably be deleted so LR can rebuild them.  The previews folder is called catalogname Previews.lrdata and is a subfolder of where your catalog file (.lrcat) is stored.  You can location your catalog by going to the General tab in the Catalog Preferences and clicking the Locate button.  You should exit LR before trying to delete the Previews subfolder and make sure you’re not deleting the catalog or backups folder, just the folder with Previews.lrdata in the name.
If the Library view just shows a different-looking version of the LR adjustments then perhaps something is wrong with the display-driver or the monitor’s color profile.

  • LR5 - Selected image does not display in the Develop Module

I recently upgraded to LR5 from LR4.1.   I have seen on several occasions where the selected image in the Develop Module does not appear.  I can move back to the LIbrary view and the image appears, but when I switch back to the Develop Module, the image disappears and only a black box appears (dark grey really).   This seems to happen after I have deleted flagged files using the ALT-Backspace shortcut.    This has happeded when  I deleted while in the Library and Develop Module, but does not happen every time.   I have disabled the "Show photo on Mouse Over" view option.  Prior to that, the preview window shows the selected or moused over photo.
The only thing I can do to get the develop module to work again is to restart Lightroom.  I've seen no other posts regarding this issue and it is very annoying when trying to go through 4000 photos!   I can find no place to report bugs, so I am posting this here.

i found LR5 the most bug infested LR version ever.
i "use" it only as test setup.
real work i still do with LR 4.4.

i just hope that some day they will be fixed.

  • Strange phenomenon when scrolling through develop module images in LR6

I just upgraded to LR6 and so far like what I see as far as performance increases.
Noticed a strange phenomenon today while scrolling through the images in the develop module. These are all rendered images with a preset applied to them.
I notice when I use the arrow key to go to the next image, the image first displays very "flat" or basic and then the rendered image appears a second or two later. If I scroll back the image displays normal rendered.
It is only when I go about 2-3 images back it starts to display the same issue of non-rendered to then a rendered image. If I scroll forward to images I have not seen yet it does the same thing of showing a non-rendered image to a rendered image.
I think I narrowed this down to the "Use the graphics processor" option. If I turn this off  the image loads a lot slower but only displays the rendered version and not the flat and then rendered version.
Turning the GPU option back on immediately does the dual image version. Strange and hard to explain but not sure if anyone else has seen this.

  • Unreasonably Slow Develop Module LR 4.3/5.3

I was running LR 4.3 (updated version) on an iMac with OSX Mavericks w/ only 4GB of RAM but that hasn't been a problem in the past, 350GB of free space on the desktop hard drive, and 200 GB of space on the external drive where the images and catalog are located. Working on a wedding with RAW files, CR2 (Canon 5D Mk II)  and NEFs (D700) (about 700 images total). Develop module takes 60+ seconds (up to several minutes) to load each image with the "loading" window, then an additional 60+ seconds for the image to load completely from a pixellated preview. This also happened on my Macbook Pro wth 16GB of RAM. Tried to auto-sync develop settings (Basic exposure settings, lens profile corrections) for ~45 photos and it took over 3 hours on the MBP. Haven't been running any other programs, ran a cleanup on the desktop to clear unnecessary files. Cleared the RAW cache, increased the size of the RAW cache, optimized the catalog, rendered the 1:1 previews (took many hours), and even created a new catalog with the images on the desktop. When all of this didn't work, I upgraded to LR5.3 and I'm still having slow (not quite as slow as before, but still infuriatingly slow) reaction times from Develop. I've wasted so many hours and I can't pinpoint where the problem is coming from.
Also receive an error message that "another program is using ____ Catalog" for several other catalogs. Could that be related to this?
Is my only option to get a new computer? This iMac (21.5") supposedly doesn't support any additional RAM...or so I've heard.

I just had a chat with the adobe support team and they say Lightroom is working perfectly, because the changes show up in Bridge and LR. And the people from ACDSee say that the lightroom edits are Adobe specific.
Correct. That's proprietary processing with the LR engine which has yet to be done (rendered and exported). The preview in those Adobe app's understand this and show you the edits but ACDC can't. You have to render an iteration as a TIFF or similar with the edits applied for another app to 'see' that. ACDC has not access to those preivews so it doesn't show you what will be applied upon export.

  • Develop module not displaying photos and tool updates.

This problem just cropped up on a previously working install - Windows 7, LR 5.6
The large display of the image in the develop module does not update for any of the actions selected in the develop module.  Pick a tool, make an adjustment - you cannot see the results of your adjustment on the large image.  The image in the filmstrip does display the results of the adjustment.  Selecting the crop tool causes the image to go grey.
Using the simple tools in the library module - they all work and show the proper results.
I have uninstalled LR and re-installed.
    I have purged previews.
    I have deleted "Lightroom 5 Preferences.agprefs".
    What next?
    David Hidding

Further info - Full Screen mode in the Develop Module - it's just black, no image.  FS mode in the Library module works correctly.
I have tried loading the latest video drivers for my video card, rebooted multiple times, etc.  Frustrated.
I should also note that this problem started right in the middle of an editing session, everything was fine, and then suddenly, the image stopped updating.

  • Lightroom 2.2 Develop Module Lockup Problems

I have a Windows XP SP2 system with the following specs:
    AMD 64 X2 4400+ processor
    2GB of Ram
    Nvidia 6600GT Graphics (128mB ram)
    NView shut off
    3D settings: performance
Norton Internet Security 2009 with Lightroom, cache and image file types excluded from scans
The problem that I am experiencing is as follows:
When I am editing an image in the develop module, the Lightroom application will randomly freeze. When the application freezes, the title bar of the Lightroom application window will revert to the blue bar that is the default for the active window within Windows and the cursor symbol will switch to the hourglass and the Lightroom will be completely unresponsive. Sometimes, the problem will clear itself in 30 60 seconds time and the program will become operational again. But, on other occasions it will remain completely locked up and will require a forced shutdown and restart of Lightroom using Control-Alt-Delete.
This problem started with Lightroom 2.0 but occurred infrequently. With Lightroom 2.1 and 2.2, the lockups occur much more often. Also, I have had one instance where the computer completely locked and I had to do a forced shutdown of the entire computer with the power button. When I attempted to restart Lightroom, it complained about not being able to read the database and shut itself down. I started the application again and it came up but appeared to have reverted to an older database backup as I lost all of the edits that I had made during this working session.
I havent been able to determine any specific task that triggers the lock up but I am using the develop module and am doing tasks like selecting another image on the filmstrip, making an adjustment or selecting another tab in the develop pane.
I have updated my nVidia driver to the latest released version as I thought that this might help but I didnt see any changes following the update.
This problem never occurred with Lightroom versions 1.x and my system is very stable otherwise. I treated the temporary lockups as an annoyance but having the database not be readable after the forced shut down of the computer is extremely concerning to me.
I love the idea of Lightroom and plan to stay with it but I need help in resolving this issues. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
    Dave Mayfield

I have exactly same symptoms as Dave Mayfield.
Except I moved images to sub-folders and renamed them, from within Lightroom.
After it locked up, it did not show sub-folders in Library and all the images have question marks on them. If I show it where the file is in Explorer, it does not show any changes.
I Imported one folder and it could see the images in the folder.
    Some were without any changes.
Some were the final edited configuration, but not change history shows in Develop. It is if it kept an Exported fersion.

  • Missing controls in Develop module - crop etc

They were there a couple of days ago but for the last few sessions the group of controls (including crop etc) that sit under the main image in the Develop module have gone missing.
I've been playing with the 'view' options without success and it seems that they are not coming back of their own volition.
    Any help appreciated.

  • Why can't I see the changes in my image when I move the sliders in LR's Develop Module

When I use the quick develop tools in the LR 5.3 Library module, I see the changes in the selected image. When I switch to the Develop Module, when I move the sliders for the different tools, nothing happens to my image. When I go back to the Library module, I see the changes, but not in the Develop Module. Why is this happening? I have a PC running Windows 7. I have 30 gigs of space on my C drive. I recently updated my LR to 5.3 and subscribed to CC. I uninstalled the LR program and reinstalled it from the cloud. Same problem.

  • Develop Module image reloading

While editing a TIFF file in the Develop module, the image keeps reloading (image flashes off and on), and the adjustment sliders revert to neutral settings. Makes any editing very diffficult!  Windows 7  64-bit   8 GB Ram.  Help!

You probably have <Automatically write changes into xmp> checked in >Edit >Catalog Settings >Metadata tab.
With this setting every step you do in the Develop Module is written into xmp, and Lr then immediately reloads the image.
This behavior occurs with TIFFs and PSDs, but not with Raw images.
The solution: Uncheck the box <Automatically write changes into xmp> when working with TIFFs.
If you need xmp files - which are not necessary for Lr to work properly - you still can save manually to xmp by pressing Ctrl / Cmd + S after you finish editing a TIFF.
You can do this manual save for a batch of images by selecting them in the Grid View and then pressing Ctrl / Cmd + S.

  • How to convert imaq image to a 2D array without vision development module

    Hi,
I'm looking for a way to convert an Imaq image into a regular picture (2D array) without using "Vision development module", nor saving it to a file (I need a refresh rate of about One frame per second).
    any ideas?
    thanks,
    Gilad.

    Greetings,
If instead of attempting to acquire the image as the raw data as per the last example, are you looking for something then like the IMAQ Image to Array? I made some research and initially I believed this VI was part of the Development Module, but I was thinking of the Array to Image VI, which is why I did not bring it up earlier.
Finally, how exactly will you then be manipulating that array? Or will you simply be interested in displaying it?
