Why do imported movie clips take up so much space?

I've recently moved over from a Windows PC to a Mac, and have been busy transferring over all my music, photos and videos. The problem I'm having is with the videos... they seem to be taking up far too much space on the Mac.
On the PC, the size of all the movie clips combined is 56.2 GB, but on the Mac the exact same clips take up 261.77 GB (the size of the iMovie events folder). And that takes into account the size of the thumbnails and the "iMovie Original Movies" folders (I actually emptied all of the "iMovie Original Movies" folders completely).
If I look at the size of one specific video (a .mov file), then it starts getting a little crazy. One that takes up 27.2 MB on the PC will take up 149.7 MB on the Mac. Another takes up 17.4 MB on the PC and 109.7 MB on the Mac. They are still the exact same files -- nothing has changed, nothing has been edited, they've simply been imported into iMovie at the optimized size (960x540) though the iMovie DropBox.
I don't understand why they have ballooned in size by such a great amount.
If anyone has any clues about how I can get the file sizes down, or any ideas about why they are so large, that would be great

I deleted the songs I don't listen to/don't want anymore, and I deleted about 2,000 songs. I also deleted about 40 home movies that I shot, and all my podcasts. After several restarts and opening and closing iTunes, the space my iTunes folder in my music folder still takes up over 45 GB of space, even though I only have 18 GB of music in my iTunes. Are the episodes being shortened when you publish to a local folder and launch them in the browser as well as when published to the server? See this page under "Troubleshooting"...

If the local files are OK it would suggest the problem is on the server. Otherwise you need to troubleshoot iWeb.
If the problem is files that are too large, you can reduce the sampling rate and/or convert to mono if the content is mostly speech rather than music.

I have imported .mov clips created on a older mac os x (lion) and when I wanted to import them into fce, a quicktime conversion window opened up and converted them (I haven't experienced this in the past). I then imported the converted quicktime clips into my fce project. After doing this I took selected clips and put those edited clips on the fce timeline. When playing the video back in the fce timeline,I noticed
1) the video wasn't playing back smoothly like the original content
2) when looking at the timecode reading of the timeline, the timecode was sputtering as well as the video and audio. I exported to quicktime just to see if that was consistent, it was.
When I play the converted quicktime content independently of fce, it plays normally (no sputtering of timecode, video and audio. Need help to resolve the sputtering playback of converted video content in the fce timeline. I've never experienced this before. Any suggestions?

When you say you converted the clips before importing them into FCE, did you convert to AIC or DV and do the converted clips match your FCE Sequence settings exactly? If not, go back and convert the original files again, using the intended Sequence settings as a guide.

Why do photos take up so much space on my phone?

I have an iPhone 5, 16 gigs. I have 174 photos and 22 videos and it says that the photos take up 3.6g of my memory... My friend has over 2k photos and hers is at 4gigs. I saved my photos to iPhoto and I deleted all my photos and ran a test, I made sure photos were at 0gigs; Then i took 30 random photos and checked and it said that it took up 124mbs. 30 photos 124mbs. I don't understand why my photos take up so much space. I also bought the Beyonce album when it came out and thats the only music I bought and it says it takes up 1.1gigs and the 17 videos are at 974 mbs. help????

Import the photos to your computer, then sync them back with iTunes. The photos will be reduced in size and quality to fit on the iPhone without taking as much space as the original pictures.
Also make sure not to use HDR mode if you do not need that feature.
After you import your photos from Camera Roll or Saved Photos, you can use iTunes to sync them back to your device.

"Other" contains objects that are not categorized elsewhere. It includes, for example, iOS, mail messages, and working space.
If "Other" is more than about 1.5 gigabytes, that would be considered a lot of space. That is often caused by corrupt app(s).
You can shrink "Other" by restoring your iPhone using iTunes. Plug your iPhone in, let it sync, then choose "Restore" from your iPhone's summary page in iTunes. You can try restoring from the backup, but that may not work. If not, restore as new and selectively sync apps back.

Sign up to iTunes Match, though I'd consider investing in more storage. If space is a problem now then you're probably not backing up your existing media and content, which you should most certainly do.

How come itunes match takes up so much space on an iphone even before you download any songs? I noticed my storage space went down about 1gb after enabling itunes match before I downloaded anything.

A couple things about itunes match. First, why does it take up so much space before you download any songs when you enable it on an iphone? Also, why does it not give back that space when you disable itunes match? It would also be very appreciated if Apple would add a confirmation check to itunes match in settings when you disable it - the same way they do when you enable it. More then once I have disabled itunes match when I meant to disable show all music, and it is a pain to wait for itunes match to go through the whole process of enabling itself again.

Bookmark Toolbar bookmarks have icons & take up too much space.

Firefox 4 beta 3 added icons to the Bookmark Toolbar, i.e. folder icons next to folder drop-downs, and mini-icons for links. While they're pretty, they take up too much space. Beta 2 didn't look like this.
How can I get rid of them?

Not on OS X. 
It is probably the first Firefox version that will have icons on the Bookmarks Toolbar if you get them by default. 
In previous Firefox versions you need a special theme or code in userChrome to accomplish that. 
Now you will need code in userChrome.css if you want to suppress those icons.
Add code to [http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css|userChrome.css] below the @namespace line.

That crash appears to be casued by the Facebook plug-in.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7 and 10.8), make a new Library in that account, import some shots and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

If you are using Premiere Elements 9 Mac, then the next thing to do is to get details on what you mean by "patch files".
There are no "patch files" as you describe. There is a Premiere Elements 9.0.1 Update that needs to be used with the program. That you install and do not uninstall for best performance of the product.
What I am wondering is this. Do you mean by patch files and the description that you give Scratch Files?
If so, then you are looking at preview files and conformed audio and video files.
I am strictly an Elements Windows person so you will have to help me translate my Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 Windows instructions into meaningful ones for you as it relates to file location.
Under Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disk, where do you have Video Previews and Audio Previews directed. At that location, you should be able to delete these files. They are automatically generated when you render Timeline content. The consequence of deletion is that you will need to render again content in the project from which they came (if that project still exists). Go to the location shown and delete.
Then look to see where the Media Cache is directed. Those are conformed audio and video files (cfa and pek). They can be deleted and will be regenerated by the program if and when needed. Go to the location shown and delete.
Then look to Edit Menu/Preferences/Media and the Media Cache Database. That is targeting conformed video files (.mcdb file extension). They can be deleted and will be regenerated by the program if and when needed. You can click on the Clean button there to get rid of them instead of following the path to them as shown in the Media Cache Database area.
Do not delete any source media that went into projects after they were saved closed.

How to remove little icons for each site in toolbar? They take up so much space

In Firefox 4, all of the bookmarks in my toolbar now have little brand icons along with the name of the site. eg: NY times now has its "T" icon along with the name. These take up so much space that now there's no room for all the bookmarks I had on the toolbar.
Is there a way to remove these little brand icons to create more space?

The icons, if you are familiar with them or they are obvious, take up less space than the words. You can abbreviate the names down to next to nothing or even nothing.
To save space and help organization you can group bookmarks into folders on your Bookmarks toolbar.

So, how do I delete this folder. Remember, I am not extremely familiar with technical terms.

I recommend you erase the TC.. it is the easiest and fastest solution.
In Airport utility open the disk tab and select erase.. choose quick erase.. it will take less than 1min.
Start again but copy files in small amounts.
