Why do items (folders) I place in the sidebar disappear overnight? Seriously, Yosemite?

Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.

  • My links/folders under "places" on the sidebar are dead, why and how to fix it? Thanks a lot fr help.

I have created several folders under the Places on the sidebar, but they are all dead now. I cannt click them, remove them, or look the files under them. Please help!

To drag an item out of the Sidebar, hold down the command key and just drag it to the Desktop - it will 'whoosh' and disappear from the Sidebar. To add folders, just drag them to the Sidebar.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is there a way to permanently set items you have added to the sidebar?

Every time I log out or restart my computer, the items I've added to the sidebar disappear. Is there any way to edit a .plist file or something to make these items a permanent part of my sidebar? Thanks for any help with this.

    Same question.
I recently left Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
Previously, in the side bar of Mail, (the one you make visible using "Show" in a previous post here), I was able to drag and drop any of the Reception mailboxes to the place I wanted to select, to put them in the order I wished, and this order remained until I decide to change it.
This seems not possible any more, or... just for the current session. If I close Mail and reopen, Reception boxes are re-ordered in alphabetic way.
Any way to make my choice permanent as before ???
To make it more clear, ordering my way is possible by drag and dropping for private mailboxes, but not for reception mailboxes associated to different mail accounts, the order is lost once Mail is closed.

Email seems to be sent, but it doesn't arrive. No 'unable to send' message, sent items and draft folders are empty. The mail disappears. I tried to fully turn off the iPad and have it restart. But it doesn't go off. I keep seeing the small white 'turning wheel' untill the battery is gone. After that, it works again (and so does the e-mail). This happens about every week. What can I do?

*there's no reason to be paranoid*
    Says Mulder .
Anyway, as I mentioned, I don't use any sync-able email, just a very plain-jane POP email provider. iSync reports no devices and has nothing in its log, which matches my never having installed anything in need of syncing.
The thing is, if Mail says its sending something when nothing was ever sent, that's a largish bug whether it is actually sending something or isn't, and there isn't really enough info here to know which of those are the case. Maybe Mail just displays "Sending" because an attempt to do something reasonable is timing out, maybe it does an innocuous and normal POP thing using very confusing nomenclature, or maybe it's really trying to send something which has a wrong flag or something. There isn't really enough info to know what is going on, so I was hoping someone could identify the symptoms.

  • Why do iPhoto folders look different on iPad?

Why do iPhoto folders look different on the iPad?  When I launch the Photos app on the iPad you get a list of photos and photo albums that I have synced from my laptop.  All is fine.  However...
The photo albums are in a different order.....I can't see name or tag data with the folders .... impossible to search for specific pictures by name......Mainly, the entire interface is so different.  Instead of simple vertical list of photo albums (as on the Mac or the iPhone, iPod,  the iPad presents you with an array of those graphic-image photo piles -- the ones where the first picture in the album is shown on top, etc.
Does this bother anyone else? Anyway to make photos and photo albums on the iPad more closely resemble the photo/album list you see on the Mac?
    David in KC

The Photos app on the iPad is just a basic photo viewer and isn't as sophisticated as iPhotos on the Mac and has limited functionality. Third-party apps will probably give you more of the functionality that you mention, but you can't change the Photos app.

  • How to retain folders from External drive on the sidebar?

I dragged some folders from my external hard drive that I regularly use when I am in the office.
Sometimes I take my MBP out without the external drives. I realize that these aliases I had created on the sidebar disappears.
When I connect up to my external drive again, I have to drag these same folders again into the sidebar.
Is there a way I can keep these external folders on the sidebar, without creating a real alias on my hard drive and copying that onto the sidebar?
    Thanks!

Oh well. It would have been nice to have the sidebar folders greyed out instead until you plug the drives back in...

  • Can't connect to server with the sidebar.

    Hi,
I have a problem with my OS X 10.5.8 Server. I just can't connect to my shared folders with the finder's sidebar. when i use the workaround with "apple+k" it works absolutely fine.
The other thing is, that when the open directory user has the permission to administer the server he can still connect with the sidebar.
Does anybody know what the problem might be?
    Best Regards
    Dan

we have a similar problem at our office. Occasionally we cant connect to shared items in the sidebar of Finder. If an alias was set in "places" of the sidebar or on the right side of the separator on the dock, you can still connect, even though the connection to a shared item fails.
"apple K" does not work, but I may be using the wrong address to connect
Restart of server and workstation seems to solve this problem.
Server OS is 10.4.11, and workstation OS is 10.5.6
    I'm stumped.

  • Cannot place file in sidebar of Mac OS X Lion

in Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.x) I was able to place a file on the sidebar and when I clicked on it, it would open. Mac OS X Lion does not allow placing a file ( a .doc file, for example) in the sidebar. I know I need to convert an alias to a certain type of alias that works with Lion (and Unix), but I cannot find the instructions in the "Communities" any more. Thanks for any help.

I found this answer elsewhere in the communities. Works fine.
It is possible to place files in the Sidebar under Lion, but you can't just drag-drop them there like you used to be able to. To place a file in the Sidebar:
    1. In a Finder window, navigate to the file you wish to place in the Sidebar and select it.
    2. From Finder menubar select Finder > File > Add to Sidebar, or press Command-T. The file will be placed in the Sidebar, where you can click-drag it up and down to locate it as you wish.
    Thank Richard, who posted this.

  • After rebooting, why do folders in Places sidebar disappear?

After shutdown and start-up, some folders disappear from the Place sidebar while others are intact. Why is that and what can I do to fix it? Is it a library preference issue? I have used the Mac Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions but that does not work at all.
    Thank you.

    Which Folders?
With Finder displayed on your menu bar, go to: Finder > Preferences > select the Sidebar tab and check the boxes next to the Sidebar Items that you want showing.
I could be wrong, but I think that only the Folders from your Home Folder that have the little symbols in them will stick in the Places Sidebar and that ever thing else should be placed into one of them?

    Sent vs. Sent Items <br>
In Thunderbird, the Sent folder (located on the IMAP mail server) retains a copy of each of your outgoing e-mail messages. This is a function that can be altered in the preferences, but is most often configured in this way on the Princeton campus. '''Outlook does not recognize that the Sent folder is any different from any other e-mail folder. Outlook's equivalent of the Sent folder is called Sent Items and is generally stored locally rather than on the central mail server.''' When you begin using Outlook, copies of your outgoing e-mail messages will be stored in the Sent Items folder. The Help Desk recommends that you create a rule to send copies of your Outgoing messages to your Sent folder on the IMAP server. See Solution 9202 for instruction.

I haven't used Bridge in a while because of this problem.

    Why does this happen?
Even though the original location of the files or folders was never moved or renamed.. Bridge loses track of the folders I put into it?
How do I keep it from doing that?

    Here's the boilerplate text referenced by Omke;
I still advocate Repairing Permissions (with Apple's Disk Utility) before AND after any system update or upgrade, as well as before AND after installing any software that requires an installer that asks for your password.
I have seen software installations go sour because the installer did not find everything as and where it should be.
I have also seen software installations go bad because the installer did not clean up after itself properly and did not leave everything as and where it should be.
This is just my own personal opinion and practice based on my own observations. Others may disagree and that's OK. I can only base my routines and my advice to others on my own experience and conclusion. I don't pretend to know why others believe otherwise.
Repairing Permissions after the fact (i. e. not immediately before and after an install) may NOT help. Try it anyway, though.

Additionally, if your machine does not run 24/7 so that it runs the daily, weekly and monthly Cron Scripts in the middle of the night as intended by Apple, run Cocktail (shareware) as well.
Cron Scripts are maintenance routines designed by Apple to run on a daily, weekly and monthly basis in the middle of the night.
If you don't run them, you WILL run into trouble, sooner rather than later.
Here's an excerpt from the Apple tech doc http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388
Mac OS X performs background maintenance tasks at certain times if the computer is not in sleep mode. If your computer is shut down or in sleep at the designated times, the maintenance does not occur. In that case, you may want or need to run these manually.
Mac OS X periodically runs background tasks that, in part, remove system files that are no longer needed. This includes purging older information from log files or deleting certain temporary items. These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large.
    Also, from: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106978
The disk activity generated by find is a normal part of file system maintenance, used for tasks such as removing invisible temporary files that are used by the system. It is scheduled to occur early in the morning at 03:15 everyday, 04:30 on Saturdays, and 05:30 on the first day of each month.
    NOTE:
There have been comments to the effect that Apple "fixed" this in 10.4.2 and later versions of the OS, but I have not been able to verify this to my satisfaction. The reference in the 10.4.2 release notes are far from explicit on this subject.

  • Why do items disappear when moved to the desktop?

Why do items disappear when moved to the desktop?

Are you perhaps referring to dragging an item out of the Dock and onto the Desktop?
If so, they are intended to poof-disappear when you do that.
The reason - the icons shown in the Dock are a form of alias, not the real item. Any running app will have its icon shown there; and those that do appear there can be made to stick even when the program is quit. This means that there must be a mechanism to get rid of them, else there would eventually be too many. One way is to right-click or Control-click the item, then select Remove from the popup menu that appears. A more convenient way is to just drag them off of the Dock and have them disappear.
If you want to replace an item on the Dock, just drag the item to the Dock, wait for the items already there to make room for it, then drop it onto the Dock. Apps can only be placed to the left of the vertical dashed line; folders can only be placed between the dashed line and the Trash.
