Why do lightning cables break so easily?

To cut to the chase, my third lightning cable broke today. I plug it in and nothing happens. This has happened with all three the same way and it seems they just keep breaking faster and faster.
And don't tell me it's my phone because it charges fine on my ihome.
And don't tell me it's my fault because I'm fought with the cable or something.
I take pristine care of my cables
What I wanna know is if there's any more durable third party chargers out there?? Or a better way to prevent this from happening?
Because these chumps at apple obviously either don't know what they're doing or they're trying to scam us with chargers like they do with adding loads of "other data" to our iPhones.
Now let me go head over to my local apple store to shell out 30 dollars for another lightning cable that's gonna break in 3 weeks.

I've had my iPhone 5 since launch day and I am still using my original cable.  I have purchased a couple extra cables so I can keep one at work, and one at my nightstand, and they are all just fine, even though they are all used almost every day.
My wife got her iPhone 5 in November of 2012 (after she accidentally dropped her iPhone 4 in the toilet).  I have had to take about 5 or 6 cables back to Apple for replacement for her.  She tends to plug her cable into the phone, then rest the phone down on the cable causing it to make ahard bend with the weight of the phone resting right on the cable where it comes out of the phone connector.  Every one of her cables that has failed, had broken the fine wires inside right where she stress bends them.  The last time I took cables back to the Apple Store, the clerk there mentioned to me that under his interpretation of the rules, the cables are only covered under the 1 year limited warranty that comes with the iPhone, and are not included in the AppleCare+ extension.  It was no problem, because I had a proof of purchase for a cable that was less than a year old, so they used its one year warranty to replace that bad cable.
I would say that the cables are fine, as long as you don't heavily stress them right there at that connection, or probably the other end of the cable as well.  As a way around this for her in her car, I bought a decent cable with a micro-USB connector on one end, then I bought her the micro-USB to Lightning adapter, and she uses that in her car now.  That one has lasted her about 8 or 9 months and is still working...

  • Why is the lightning cable so fragile that in less than 3 months I have had to set 3 cables aside because they don't charge anymore?

In less than 3 months I have had to buy 2 more cables... None work anymore... Why is this cable so fragile that even though I don't twist or turn it, it ends up malfunctioning all of a sudden? The regular 30 pin cable has a much longer "life cycle". I bought an adapter and am charging my devices (iphone5 and mini Ipad) with it. Is there anynsuggestions to what i should do with these cables that are no longer working and are still almost brand new?

Had a similar problem.  Lightening cable is not up to the job, it gets twisted easily and breaks.  Had the old type on an IPhone 4 that has lasted over 2 years, but the lightening lasted less than three months.  Cardiff store did not want to know about this problem and tried to sell me a new one for £14.00, absolutely shocking aft sales care.

  • Why don't third party lightning cables work? Apples are too short

Why since updating my iPhone 5 to IOS7 do none of my lightning cables work. I dismissed the message that came up and had it on charge over night but nothing. This is ridiculous, how can Apple do this to their customers, if they actually made longer charging cables and at a reasonable price people wouldn't have to buy thrid party party. I don't think my Apple cable is even working either.

If the third-party cable is MFi (Made for iPhone) approved, it should work.
    Apple now sells longer cables.
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD819ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-cable-2-m>
Belkin has an even longer one.
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/HB560ZM/A/belkin-21-amp-lightning-to-usb-charg esync-cable>
It's being sold by Apple, so is probably MFI approved.  Its Lightning connector may not fit some caews, though.

  • Official lightning cables always breaking.

I've been an apple user for the last 10 years and I've had my recent Iphone 5 for around a year and a half now. From around the third-sixth month I had the phone, my official lightning cable broke I then ended up spending a huge amount on a few new lightning cables from apple, since then, all the chargers have broke. As well as this, the charge time has seemed to increase month by month. I'm sure that the Iphone is damaging the chargers, as I'm extremely careful when charging.
I've tried to get phone support/chat support but can't afford the £25 it costs to have a small amount of support, hay... my phone only cost £600, why would I get phone support included in that? As well as this, I've tried many times to post questions to the apple community and have revived the message 'You are not allowed to create or update this content' I'm unsure that I will be able to post this, but Its worth a try ay?
I'm very disappointed in the apple support so far, as its the main reason I bought the phone in the first place (I've always known apple being top dogs on support issues). I feel like I have an Iphone but am not part of apples customers because I have not been treated right as of yet. three years ago I would have recommended apple to anyone because of how I'm treated as a customer, but now I'd avoid at all costs and will not being using apple products in the future.
My nearest apple store is around an hours drive away, and I do not have a car... So at the moment I'm stuck using an Iphone thats costing me £10 a month in chargers. Being a uni student, this has taken a big unexpected cut from the little earning I can get from part time work.
I'll end the rant now, But I'd just like to get some info on how I can fix my chargers or phone to stop it from damaging them. Also I'd like to hear others views on apple support over the past year or so (Because I feel as though apple want nothing to do with me as a user).
Thanks for reading and for any replies!

As well as this, the charge time has seemed to increase month by month.
Did you check if your battery is eligible to be replaced by Apple?

  • Lightning cables keep breaking

My 3rd lightning cable just stopped working. The same thing happened to my last one. It worked for about 3 months and then just stopped working. It would charge my iPod, but only if it was completely off. I could live with having to turn it off every time I have to charge it, but it doesn't work when I try to sync it with my laptop. Windows just says it's an unknown device and itunes doesn't recognize it. I went to get a new one but this time it only lasted less than a week. I don't have a warranty and I don't want to have to get a new one every time it breaks.

What are yo dong to the cable?
I have been using the same (one cable) for both my iPad 4 and 7G iPod Nano for the last 23 months without problems.

  • Why can't my Macbook Pro connect to iPhone 5 in any way (lightning cable, Wi-Fi)?

I have a Macbook Pro, I bought it in June or July or 2011, so I'm not sure which model that makes it. But anyway, just recently, I noticed that when I plug my iPhone 5 into it, it does not recognize or acknowledge that my phone is plugged in at all. It doesn't show up in iTunes, or anywhere else for that matter. I've also noticed that with the lightning cable, it will only charge my phone on one side. I've tried plugging my cable into both usb ports, but still, the lightning cable only works on one side. I tried another cable, same thing, but when I plug both of them into my wall charger, both sides work fine.
So after my Macbook didn't recognize the phone through the cable, I just thought "eh, whatever, I'll wirelessly sync it." So I go to the settings on my phone, go to iTunes Wi-Fi Sync, and it says "Sync will resume when "Austin *****'s MacBook Pro is available." but no matter what I do, the computer never becomes available. I've considered that it might be the phone that's the problem, because I don't have another computer to test it on, but I don't see how it could as I just got this iPhone 5 just over a month ago, and it has not been dropped, or gotten water on it or anything. If anyone can help that would be amazing, as the employees at the Apple Store like to always tell me I have to buy something new, and that isn't an option right now.

    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Why did my hdmi lightning cable stop working?

Was able to watch on the tv screen using mirroring with my new ipad and apples hdmi lightning cable.
Suddenly today no mirroring occurs. The screen goes blank, then "no signal".
When i try with my husbands ipad mini, no problem, his still works, so its not the cable...
I do not want to stand in line for an hour and then have some 'genius' reset my ipad and tell me to go home and try again.
    Any ideas?

  • TS2634 Why does every lightning cable that I connect to my iPad eventually stop working?

I have purchased a dozen lightning cables. Some work, some don't.  Every one I have purchased has stopped working after a short period if use. It may take a few months but it will eventually stop working.  I take care of the cables. They are not subjected to physical damage of any kind.
    Please advise

If they are genuine Apple cables they have a 12 month warranty either from the device they came with or when purchased as an Accessory

  • Lightning Cables TOO FRAGILE... Need Upgrading

I'ts been about 1.5 Years now since I've had my iPhone 5.
But, within the last 3-5 months the Lightning Cables are extremely crappy.
I carry my Charging Cable everywhere in my pocket. I would have it on the go anywhere. Even when on the job sites.
But. I've been going through these cables like a mad man... It's like someone that's a smoker and can't stop..
I've gone through almost 20 lightning cables within the last 3-5 months...
Why can't the lightning cables be more reinforced where the cable and connectors meet where you plug in your devices?
I sleep with my iPhone 5 on my bed and I hold it when I'm charging it.
Why is it i can't do that much and the cables keep breaking? But, when I were to use an different charger for a different electronic device. I can use the cables that way and they last for months on end?
My 2nd Gen iPod Touch cable was less fragile then the Lightning cables.
Why do these cables have to be so fragile?
I even took a course in college where I learnt how to coil cables properly for concert mic/lighting cables and when I open a lighting cable out of it's package. I know how to coil it back to what it was like when I first opened the package.
Why are the Lightning Cables so fragile??? Please Upgrade them..
My iPhone 5 battery is almost on its final charge and dies @ 25-40% battery life left. And i think these cables have a thing behind that trouble.
Please fix these fragile Lightning Cables. I'm getting fed up of needing to lose the use of my phone for a day because the stores are closed and I can't get a new cable only because the cables don't last at all.

  • Issues transferring photo/video from iPhone 6 to Macbook Pro running OS X 10.8.5 via USB-to-Lightning cable

    Hello all—
Recent upgrader to iPhone 6. I have a mid-'09 Macbook Pro running OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion and I'm seeking to transfer video I just shot on my iPhone 6 to my Macbook Pro. They are large files so I need to transfer via USB-to-Lightning cable as I don't have wi-fi capability to do the upload. However I can't access the iPhone 6 as a storage device through finder or image capture and can't figure out another way to transfer the files non-wirelessly. Any suggestions? The old iPhoto '09 on here won't let me import, either.

Why virtualize Leopard and not Snow Leopard?
I guess I did it once in Parallels:

But to be honest, I have forgotten how!
Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) installed into Parallels is another matter altogether!

  • Lightning cable won't stay in iphone

When I connect the lightning cable to the phone it will charge and then I have to carefully set it down and leave it untouched. If I receive a phone call or message the phone will vibrate and the cord comes out and stops charging. It also comes out if I pick up the phone or try to use it while it's charging. Is there a way to repair the 'teeth' that hold the cable?

Genuine apple cable. Even used brand new cable from friend's new phone. same issue with all cables.
I suppose the warranty question would be an apple question. I'll make an appointment and try to go to the store unless there's a part that I can easily switch out.

  • Lightning cable not working from both sides (not reversible)

    Hi,
2 days ago I started to notice something... I was about to charge my iphone with the cable but I noticed that it wanst charging... I checked the usb ports from my computer and 2 wall adapters and sometimes it did charge and some did not, but then I fliped the lightning cable it did, what I mean is that if I plug the charging cable in the "right side" it does charge and gets recognized by iTunes, if i plug it with the "wrong side" it doesnt.
At this moment I dont know if the cable is the problem or the phone, because I only own one lightning cable. I`ll try to go to a apple store to check with another cables, but still i want to know if there is more people with this problem and if it has some kindo of solution.
my phone is 1 month old btw...
    Saludos y disculpen mi ingles

I have the same problem with my iPhone 5. It started last week when I found out that the phone is not charging when connected. So I take out the cable and found out that the pins on the connector cable was black and have a burnt smell. I leave the phone for several minutes and tried to connect it again. I found out that cable only work on one side.
So I took some pictures and went to Apple online support to request for a new cable. I got a new cable and the problem still persists. Now I know that the problem is with the connector on the phone. I went to the Apple online support and request for a repair. I sent them the phone and they said that they put the repair on hold.
I telephoned the support centre asking why they put the work on hold, and they told me that the repair is not covered because the problem might be caused by liquid damage. I was pretty sure that it wasn't liquid damage because I believe I take extra good care of the £529 phone. The operator asked me to ask my insurance company (which I don't have) in case they cover that accident. The operator also told me that the repair cost, £152+VAT is cheaper than usual £170++VAT. It was very disappointing.
Pretty sure it wasn't liquid damage, I telephoned the support centre again, and this time the operator told me that it is because of accident and they don't cover it. She couldn't explain exactly what is the problem and connected me with a senior operator. The senior operator told me that the engineers think that it might be cause by liquid damage. Then I told her that I have pictures of the burnt cable. She let me send those pictures and they'll contact me again by tomorrow. So I still don't know what is the conditon of my claim.
So as a conclusion... The engineers think that the damage might be caused by liquid damage, but the term 'might' does mean that it 'might not' caused by liquid damage too. I have read other discussions telling that they found out that their cable has some corrosion on the pins even though there have not been any contact with liquid.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4363224?start=0&tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4566785?start=0&tstart=0
It looks like that I'm not the only one with the problem. I think the lightning connector itself is prone to corrosion. So I think that it is a design flaw, and Apple should cover the repair cost. Now I can only wait.
