Why do linked images become embedded?

I start a file, place a linked image into the file, save it and close it. When I reopen the file the image has become embedded. It happens whether I save as an .ai file or an EPS file.

When saving, be sure 'Include Linked Files' is not checked if you want to keep them as links.

• Linked images become embedded after re-opening file

Hi,
I have linked images to my Illustrator CS3 file but when I close the application and file then re-open later, the tiff files show that they are now embedded. I have one eps file that stays as a linked file. All images are stored on a network server while my files reside on my hard drive.
Has anyone else encountered this type of problem with Illustrator? Any fix?
Thanks for your help!
Janet

It used to be that even when you embedded a link, saved, close, then reopened, even though the art was embedded, the name of the file would remain in the links palette -- which was very helpful in case you wanted to find that file again. In CS3 though, when you save, close, and reopen, the name of the embedded art is missing. Any way to keep that name in there EVEN THOUGH we intend to embed it???

• Question on PDF files with linked images (not embedded) between Reader and Illustrator

I run into situations when I get customer PDFs that need to be edited. When they load in Acrobat Reader it works fine. However if I load it into Illustrator it asks me to point it to the linked file. The question is how does Acrobat Reader open a PDF file and show a linked file when it is not embedded? Why can't Illustrator do the same thing?
This is more of a technical question, but any information would be helpful. Thanks.

For linked images, your PDF file contains a thumbnail image along with the reference or address of the actual image. Reader will display this thumbnail. Now, wanting to edit the PDF in Illustrator, it wants to enable you working on the actual image. Hence it asks you to point to the linked file.

• Why do linked images resize in ID after being edited elsewhere?

We use CS4 to layout full colour test papers and text and images files are linked from InCopy, Illustrator and PhotoShop. We noticed that if the images or the text is edited outside of ID, when ID is launched the images always shrink to say between 97- 70%. Even if the linked InCopy file is opened and closed without and editing, the images shrink or get clipped on the sides.
We’ve played with the setting in ID where we decide whether we want linked images to fit in pre-determined image placeholders but this doesn’t seem to fix the problem. Is there a way of ensuring that images retain their original size and dimensions?
Would be glad to hear of some useful insights on why this is happening. I hope my question makes sense.

Have a look to your Object Styles of the used frames. Is there something defined in the frame fittings options?

• Photoshop, Why letter for Image become blurry ?

Hi, does anyone can help. I have made slider image for my site with adobe photoshop. I set the DPI 200 when saving to JPG, beacuse for site I thing doesn't need very big image, but whe i upload to my site its become little bit blurry. I have tried to set higher DPI but the result still blurry, espesialy in the letter. see the result here www.fandelafx.co.( every letter in the image slider )
Is that something wrong when I process the image in the photoshop ? please advice..

For the Web DPI is meaningless all that matters are the number of Pixels and how good they are. Displays drivers do not use an images DPI setting for anything. They just display pixels on the display connected to the computer. Displays have a single pixel size their resolution is fixed. So you web image will look different on various displays. The size and resolution will differ between devices. Create you images for displays to fit within some pixel area. If you create Large print images with fine details they will degrade and loose details when re-sized to fit on displays. Create image for the web that will look good with the limited number of pixels most display have. Do not create image that will only fit on full 5k displays create images that will look good on devices with limited pixels like 800x600

• Why do my images become very desaturated and the exposure changes every time I paste them to a blank page? The originals are so vibrant and warm by comparison.

Hi,
For work I always paste 3 images of varying sizes onto the same page in photoshop. This wasn't an issue and always looked great when I did it in ps5, but since upgrading to ps6 they always paste flat, desaturated and underexposed. Put side-by-side with the original they look terrible.
This is something I desperately need to resolve as I show this small collection to my customers and potential customers.
I've changed my color settings in an attempt to sort this out, but this has made absolutely no difference.
Thanks in advance
Kimberly

RGB is not a color space, it's a color model. Color spaces are sRGB, Adobe RGB, ProPhoto RGB etc.
Since you're apparently not familiar with these concepts, you should work consistently in sRGB, which displays roughly right in all scenarios even in the absence of color management.
The default color space out of Lightroom (if you haven't changed it) is ProPhoto, which can quickly get you into trouble unless you know what you're doing. Change it to sRGB in Lr Preferences > External editing.
Don't change Photoshop color settings! That will quickly get you into an even bigger mess than you are now. Reset it to default settings and don't touch them again until you know more. What you need to change is Lightroom "Edit in Photoshop" color space.

• Dropdown list to change image field linked image?

Hello,
I am quite new in Designer but I have to complete a job and I don't find the solution.
I try to update on a form an image field using the value of a dropdown box and a "if" script.
I use linked images (not embedded ones) and try using a script calling the image Field. value. image. href property.
The property is well updated as export to xml displays well the new href value but the image is not displayed as something was missing to activate it.
form1.#subform[0].ImageField1::calculate - (FormCalc, client)
if (UN_DropDownList == "3373") then ImageField1.value.image.href = ".\Images\UN3373.png"
endif
Rather simple (don't laugh at it) but it doesn't work.
I found solutions for embedded images via visible/hidden by dropdown list (not yet tested) as these ones. I give them below for reference (if some other users are interested)
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/683215
http://forums.adobe.com/message/2187604
http://acrobat.timhuff.net/?p=5
But not for linked images (path or URL). By the way, I found same problem descriptions in other forums but without any proposed solution.
As I should have quite a lot of images with frequent updates, it seems to me a better solutions...
Thanks in advance for you help.
Kind regards
Philippe

Hi Philippe,
Have a look at this blog, http://blogs.adobe.com/formfeed/2009/11/linked_vs_embedded_template_im.html, it turns out that both linked and embedded images are stored in the PDF but just in different ways. So updating the href at run time will have no effect.
If you are not in a possition to store all the images in the PDF at design time then you might have to look at setting up a webservice to access them on a server.
Good luck
Bruce

• Some of my website images with embeded links only show the link with firefox, with IE8 the image appears correctly, why does this happen

my website http://www.functionkey.net. If you view my homepage you will see that 3 of my images with embedded links only show up with the links. I am not using "_blank" in my code. The website was created using Microsoft Frontpage 2003.

If you look at the page source then you will notice that there are some errors with (missing) closing tags.
Such errors shows as RED text.
You need to correct at least all codes marked as red text.
The first <a> tag isn't closed here and you open a second <a>

<a target="_blank" border="0" href="http://www.win-rar.com">
<div align="left">
</div>

• When I embed a linked image in a document it 'grows' in thickness. What do I need to do to maintain what it looked like before embedding?

When I embed a linked image in a document it 'grows' in thickness. What do I need to do to maintain what it looked like before embedding?

I am using a mac - OSX 10.7.5
I have Adobe Creative Suites - CS5 - Illustrator version is 15.0.2
The contents I am placing are all Vector - Illustrator files
I used 'simple' linear (line) drawings from SolidWorks that have been converted to ai files. It's just weird because I checked the stroke of the drawing and it's not out of line (stroke is about .5 pts). I also made some of the labels in the examples below earlier and they didn't exhibit the 'larger stroke images'. Perhaps I clicked on something in the Preferences or some other place that caused my problem?
I am attaching part of some box labels. You can see how the drawings, of the products, on the 'left side' are "thick" (strokes have grown) after embedding them. I think the "Global Logo" was pasted into a template that was not linked and embedded - that's why it's okay. But look at the Quiet Thunder logo - it looks terrible. These labels are only 2.25" X 6.5", so its important I keep the images lightweight.
Your help is very much appreciated. Thank you!

• Why does Illustrator CS 4 high res pdf ask for linked images?

I have saved high res pdfs (press quality) from Illustrator CS4 directly, and when I sent these pdfs to the printers, they ask me to supply them the linked images, otherwise they could not view the entire file completely. I thought the high res pdf setting would automatically embed images, could anyone please help me?? Our printers are waiting for explaination urgently and the images are very very large to be transferred overseas online. Thank you!!

If you made a PDF which is "print ready" there should be no issue, this is given that the printer informed you as to what "Print Ready" was by their workflow standards. The only time I would need to go back to a client for source files which were embedded into a PDF is if there were color mode issues (RGB image needed to convert to CMYK with certain profile) or if client PDF produced without required bleed. If you have exercised due diligence and the PDF is in fact "Print Ready" the printer may not be used to working with PDF files that are truly print ready. I have sent PDF files to printers who absolutely wanted to open the PDF in Illustrator and have all source/linked files because they were used to getting all end user files, not press ready PDF files. Once I spoke with the Prepress operator and let him know that I went through the PDF and made sure the file was exactly separated as it should print, and he should be able to send it straight to his RIP, then everything was fine.
Prepress people get used to dealing with designers who don't know how to do anything execpt make a moch up of what they want and print it out on their own ink jet printer. The actual file they send to the printer may need to be completely retooled in order to separate correctly for the printing process.

• Why are my attachment images being embedded as distorted thumbnails in the body of the text in Mac Mail?

Why are my attachment images being embedded as distorted thumbnails in the body of the text in Mac Mail? How can I attach image files as normal attachments?

• Illustrator is Automatically Embedding my Linked Images

Is there some sort of "Auto Embed" feature that will embed your linked images?
I have a document that is embedding most of the linked images. It's not happening in all my documents, just one

Did you check this
on Placing the file and then do this
on Saving? If you did, it will embed the file.

• Placing Linked vs. Embedded Images in Photoshop

Hi,
What is the difference between placing images that are linked vs embedded in Photoshop? Is it the same as in Illustrator?
They act the opposite of what I would think. Embedded ones act like Smart Objects, where if you double click on them they take you to the original (which I would think would be linked), whereas Linked ones are flattened and don't do anything if you double click on them (what I would think would be the case if they were embedded).
If I'm using linked images in a file that I want to have printed, will I have to provide the links to the printer like a packaged file in InDesign?
Thanks

I'll start you off with this excellent video tutorial Place embedded and place linked in Photoshop CC on Vimeo
As far as Printers go, I always thought they preferred flat files, but I think it's always wise to consult them as to their requirements.

• Linked images rather than Embedded Images

Is there a way to have an image in a Pages document be linked rather than embedded? The intention would be to maintain photo quality but reduce the size of the document. This would be similiar to indesign.
Cheers.

Hello Bryan,
Pahes has not such a function. All you can do is to place a link by hand into the document package folder. This means to show the document in the Finder, do a control-click onto it's icon and choose the item "Show Package Contents" from the appearing menu. Now you will see a new window with all the content of the document in it. Take the images out and place a link with the exact name plus ending of the image into the folder. But be sure to place a symbolic link (type into Terminal: "ln -s /<imageName>", when you have navigated with: "cd <documentPackgeFolderPath>" into the document package folder) or this will not work.
If you think this is the kind of way that works for you than use it. But I think this is no way for a production workflow.

• Linked images in eps files

I was playing with CS5 over the last several days and noticed somethng odd.
- Place an image in a new Illustrator file. Your layers palette shows Layer 1 > Linked File.
- Save a copy of that file as an eps.
- Open the eps and look at the layers palette. It now shows Layer 1 > Group > Group > Clipping Mask, Image.
Now, I vaguely recall that creating an eps in Illy always builds a clipping mask around images (though, why, I have no idea. It seems to needlessly complicate things) which would explain one of the Groups. But, what's with the extra group level? Is this action new to CS5? I'm upgrading from a rather old version of Illustrator, but I never saw this behavior before.
And, is there a way to stop the creation of clipping masks around images in eps files?

To stop the creation of clipping masks around images in eps files and still keep your Linked File "linked" and not "embedded", uncheck "Include Linked Files" checkbox in the EPS Options dialog and then choose Preserve Links in the subsequent warning dialog.
