Why do .mp4 files not show up in the Finder/work in iDVD?

I downloaded some .mp4 files from the internet on my Windows PC and as per usual they are played by quicktime on my PC.
When I saved them to my external HDD and plugged it into my MBP, the folder containing the mp4 files does not appear, and neither will they import into iDVD where I am trying to burn them.
I am a new MBP user (and a happy one so far) so I am well aware I coukd be missing something here, but I thought that .mp4 was practically guaranteed to play on a Mac especially given the relationship to video iPods?

Thanks, but after installing this nothing seems to have changed except that if I download the .mp4 files from my Mac they appear on the Desktop. They can be played with Quicktime but if they are played in VLC there is no sound
The folder on my external HDD which contains the .mp4 files still does not ahow up.
I am now very confused!
Does anyone have more ideas, I'll try whatever!

Interesting. Googling, I see that someone posted that on these discussions as well:

which mentions what I recall: that Airdrop (as implemented by Apple) would create an on-demand ad-hoc Wi-Fi connection, even if you were already connected to an access point. Normally, you can't connect to multiple Wi-Fi networks, thus the reason for Airdrop only supported on newer Wi-Fi chips.

Why some photos do not show up in the widgets after final export?

Why do I have a problem with the FeatureD News Widget not showing all my photos? I have tried redoing it many times over in different formats and all but one photo never shows up in the final export. Please I need help to finish up the website.

If I understand this correctly, you are reporting that you have images in your Featured News' target frames and some of those photos do not show up in the published site.
If so, I would like you to confirm if the widget works fine in Preview within Muse? Are the images missing in all browsers, even after clearing the browser cache? Can you provide a link to a published site? If required I may also request your source Muse file to investigate further.

Why available Lan Host not showing up in the DHCP Leased Client table for RV180

I just purchased the RV180 and am puzzled as to why lan host with ip address of 192.168.1.102 not showing up in the DHCP leased clients list.
I have 4 static ip addresses with the last 3 digits ending in 101, 102,103 and 200 listed in the static DHCP and available local network list, but 102 is not in the DHCP leased clients list. The other 3: 101,103 and 200 are.
Should it not be there also?

There is nothing different about 102 than the other hosts.
I did talk to tech support at Cisco this morning and I was told that I should not use the static DHCP under Networking LAN. Instead, I should set the static IP at the device level.
So under Static DHCP, the list is blank, but the IP address will show up under Available LAN Hosts and listed as Static as Type.
I thought this is a bit strange since it is Static DHCP and should be under Static DHCP (?)

Why are my files not showing up on desktop?

I was running several programs on my macbook air: iChat, iCal, Mail, Word for Mac, Safari, and Finder. In Safari, I would right click on any file (word, powerpoint, pdf, etc) to download it to desktop as I normally would. All goes well until I actually go to desktop and see nothing. The file does not show in my desktop. I go into finder, pull up the desktop folder and the file is there. Here's the catch: files downloaded to desktop from other sessions show up in both locations (actual desktop and desktop folder in finder) but the new ones do not. Forcing all my programs to quit doesn't help, only restarting the system does and then the files show up in my actual desktop as opposed to only the desktop folder. I feel like this is rare and only happens when I have iChat open in addition to other programs (although I'll be doing more tests to confirm). I'm running the latest OS (Lion) on a Macbook Air. Anyone else seeing this issue or know what's going on?

Why are .xlsm file not listed under spreadsheet in finder?

In finder (os10.8.2) the .xlsm files are listed under documents not spreadsheets. Is there a way to get all spreadsheet listed properly?

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps. If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later: You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File: a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected. 3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

Why is my WD My Book for Mac not showing up on the finder after installing Mavericks?

I recently upgraded to Mavericks. I have a WD My Book. I had received emails from WD stating that the software from WD had to be removed from the Mac before installing Mavericks. So I waited until I received an email from WD saying they had resolved the issue. I upgraded to Mavericks and used the new Drive Manager and SmartWare software from WD. The software (WD) recognizes my iMac, but the WD My Book does not appear through their software or in the Finder on my iMac.
I've called WD twice and it seems they have no idea what to do. They replied with an email for software to recover my files. But I can't even see the files on the My Book drive to recover them. Is this a Mavericks issue? Do I need to download something from Apple? I don't think the issue is to recover files. It's just that the iMac is not recognizing the drive at all.

Assuming you had Find My iPhone enabled in the iCloud settings of the device, it will show only if it has a connection to the internet.

Changes to edd files not showing up in the DITA 1.2 applications

I made changes to the edd files in the DITA 1.2 folder, but they aren't showing up when I use applications that are linked to them. The changes I made don't go into effect until I import element definitions, and I don't want to do that for every file. Has anyone else had this problem?

After updating the EDD, you have to import that into the corresponding template(s). Be careful not to import the EDD into the wrong template. Note that the default setup for DITA 1.2 in FM is to have separate structure applications for each topic type. That means you have to maintain separate EDDs and tempaltes for each. The EDDs are set up to be shared where apporpriate (via text insets), but it can be hard to keep track of which goes where.
The best approach is to clone the default apps to make apps of your own name, so you can always test with the default apps .. because you *will* eventually break something and won't know what happened.

Why is an artist not showing in under the Artists tab on my ipod yet I can choose individual songs on the Songs tab

I would like to listen to my entire Alice in Chains playlist. When I go to the Artists tab to find them, Alice in Chains does not appear. However, if I look for a specific song by them using the Songs tab, I can find each song individually. I am not sure of this is happening with other artists as well, this is the only one I have noticed so far. Not having the search function on this new ipod model is a huge detriment to its functionality, otherwise I could have just searched for Alice in Chains to find their playlist.
As a note: I believe it is something to do with the ipod itself because I have the same songs synched to my Gen 5 ipod and I have no problem pulling Alice in Chains up as an Artist.

Why are my pics not showing up as the most recent pics uploaded? I can find them but have to search

I'm using PSE7 and first off, the program has been letting me upload pictures directly from my camera. I now have to load them from my computer then from my computer to PSE7. Once uploaded they used to pop up as the most recent loaded, now I have to search for them. Any suggestions?

In the organizer there is a option to change the view by Date (Newest First) or Date (Oldest First), you can change the settings inside the Organizer to change the view.
