Why do my external hard drives keep disappearing?

Hi, we have 3 external harddrives plugged into the the USB ports on the computer (not keyboard) they frequently dissappear and have to be unplugged and plugged back in to get them back. This has been happening when we only had one external and then with 2 externals or now with 3. Its not a huge deal but it does become frustrating on busy work days. Is there a fix for this?

How do I transfer iphoto library to external hard drive keeping events intact?

Had a one to one session but forgot how to do this. I would like to transfer my iphoto library to an external hard drive keeping the folders and events intact. I figured out how to send all my photos to the hard drive but they all transfer in single images, if that makes sense, and then i have to go thru all of the 15,000 images by hand and sort them into folders. Ahhhhhhh!
When they showed me how to do this at apple I am able to open my external hard drive and see a folder labled 'iphotolibrary" and I am able to click it open and then all my events show up just like in iphoto library.
Also does your iphoto library "Trash" take up space on your HD? Forgve me if thats a dumb question but I am kind of a computer "dummy".

"I haven't read the whole thread, so someone could have already mentioned this, but I did the same thing, move my music library to an external drive. The Help articles are helpful, but only up to a point. When that didn't work, I called up AppleCare support up, and they took me through all the standard steps, and got stumped at the same point I did. Finally she suggested trying something, and that ended up doing the trick. So here in brief is what you do:
1) Copy over your "iTunes Music" folder to the external hard drive
2) Go into Advanced preferences to have iTunes look for the "iTunes Music" folder in the new location. If you're like me, your music won't appear in the Library.
3) In iTunes, go to the Library window (which is probably blank), then in a Finder window, find the icon for the "iTunes Music" folder in the new location. Drag that icon onto the Library window.
You should now see a progress window pop up showing all the songs that it's populating the Library window with."

My external hard drive has disappeared

My external hard drive has disappeared from the 'open file' window in photoshop CS6. It's working fine and appears in other applications such as bridge and lightroom. How do I get it back? I'm running a Mac on OS X.

You may have accidentally dragged the drive out of the Devices list in the sidebar.
In a Finder window with visible sidebar, do Shift+Cmd+G to get the Go To Folder dialog. Enter
/volumes
then click OK.
You'll see all your mounted volumes in the Finder window. Drag the required one to the Devices list in the sidebar.

Hard Drives Keeps Disappearing Windows 8.1

I just recently upgraded to Win 8.1. I have 3 hdds. Win is installed on Samsung SSD. The other hdds is for software and for games. The gaming hard drive keeps disappearing. I have to restart the computer to get it show again in My Computers. Also I notice
sometimes when I restart my boot order keeps changing. I have to go into the bios and change the load order back to my SSD to the 1st priority. Can someone help with this issue?

Hardware related issue please contact your provider.
For your issue, when you reboot you can press F2 or F12 to load your boot menu. However, please notice the key depends on your hardware. It migth also be F5. So you may have to contact your computer provider about this issue.
If you can open that Boot menu. Please try search for boot order. Then you will be able to change the order.
By the way, if SSD keeps disappear, I think it is poor contact. I will recommend you contact your provider for more details.

Only my computer hard drive is and I want to import from an external drive. I have always been able to until I updated to Aperture 3.6 and Yosemite.

I had the same problem. On the folders on the drive with the Aperture library did show in the Import panel. After I clicked the computer icon in the upper left corner of the Import panel, suddenly all drives appeared.
You can also try to drag the folder you want to import into the Import panel, to point the file chooser to the drive.

Why does my external Hard Drive not save album artwork? Help!

I have quite a lot of music saved digitally, so to save space I have been storing it on an external hard drive. Some of the music does not have any artwork attached (and does not download any when I select 'get album artwork').
So, as an example, starting with the music on iTunes, I have manually added some artwork via the 'Get info' option.
I then saved the music to my external hard drive.
However, when I next transfer the same album back onto iTunes, none of the artwork has been saved.
Why is this? And how can it be corrected?

thanks for the reply, limnos, But let me explain: I have about 80gb-100gb of music.
I can't keep all of this on my computer (on iTunes) as it simply takes up too much space for the rest of my computer to run at a decent speed.
I therefore use my hard drive as a kind of library, where i store my music and occasionally transfer some music onto iTunes to listen to, and then transfer it back whe I'm done. Do you see?
I have done a bit more exploring and I think maybe I only have a problem with artwork 'disappearing' when it is albums that I have requested 'get album artwork'. i.e. the artwork downloads onto an album; then i copy the album onto my hard drive for storage; then when i want to play the album again and copy it back onto itunes, the artwork has been lost.
Do you know why?

My external hard drive is telling me that I have 'read only' permission! I just had to have my macbook pro whipped and I got everything back on the computer but it would also be nice to save stuff as I go since I've already had problems!

Why are my external hard drives always spinning up?

DESKTOP MAC.
I came home to my Mac after a day away, and found one of my external hard drives had been running apparently all day. The only thing I had open was Camino and iTunes, and also Activity Monitor.

I often find the other hard drive(s) spin up at seemingly random times, for instance as soon as I sat down and started browsing the Web, the other external hard drive also spun up.
Why? I didn't do anything which would call for them to be active.
Is there any way to tell if certain applications have incorrectly placed important files on the external HD's (i.e. Safari putting its cache there, or iTunes linking to songs on an external)?
Are there utilities which can tell me which applications are banging on which disks or volumes?
DESKTOP MAC. Not laptop. Please do not give answers which use the words "sleep", "clamshell" or "battery". Again this is a desktop Mac not a laptop.

If it is a desktop machine, you want the hard drives to keep running all the time; it is disastrous to their longevity to be stopping and starting repeatedly.
I have a Seagate (that is NOT a recommendation) that I bought at a local PC outlet, and it insists on stopping and starting every 35 seconds or so, when I am not using the machine.
I found the utility Keep Drive Spinning on Apple’s web site ( www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/keepdrivespinning.html ) and I added it to my login items. During the boot process, it shows a dialogue; I click on a volume on the drive and type in 33 (seconds).

p.s. There is a setting “Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible” in System Preferences: Energy Saver. This should be off, for the same reason; this is strictly for laptops, in my opinion.
p.p.s. If I leave my machine on, while I am not using it for a day or so, I put it to Sleep; under those circumstances, Keep Drive Spinning does allow the machine to sleep properly.

External hard drive mysteriously disappeared.

My external hard drive (Firewire) mysteriously disappeared. I can get it to pop up in Disk Utility, but I can't get it to show on the desktop. I've tried it on a few Mac computers. Do you have any idea what happened?

That's very strange. I don't think I've heard of DU exhibiting that behavior before.
I presume the reason you don't want to erase the drive is that there is un-backed-up data on it, and that if you could recover that data you could either reformat (erase) or dispose of the drive.
You may want to try downloading and using the free demo version of one or more of these data recovery utilities:
Data Rescue II
FileSalvage
VirtualLab
In each case, the demo will show you what files the full version would be able to recover from the drive. You can then decide whether the files you could recover are valuable enough to justify buying the full version of the utility.

External hard drive keeps disconnecting and then reconnecting

External hard drive on Time Machine, running via USB keeps disconnecting. Get the pop us that the drive wasn't disconnected properly. This Mac is brand new as is the hard drive. It is a Seagate 1T Free Agent.
After a minute or two it reconnects. I've run Seagate diagnostics and it says the drive is fine.
Any suggestions?

See #A1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a handy widget that will display the backup messages from your logs.
See what that shows; there may be a problem with the backup, which results in TM ejecting the drive. If so, the disconnect may be a symptom, not a cause. If so, see #C2 there. If not, or if you're not sure, copy and post them here.
Also, to rule out other USB problems, disconnect everything but keyboard and mouse; connect the drive directly to your Mac (no hub).
Make sure all connections are snug and secure.
Try other ports, cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may not make good contact in another one, and throw intermittent errors).

Moved itunes to external hard drive - Keep getting ipod recovery/ restore

I moved itunes to an external hard drive and have had problems ever since. My itunes application seems to be fine but it keeps telling me that I cannot use itunes until I restore the ipod. I've followed the instructions to both restore AND change drive but nothing is working. Any suggestions anyone? Thx!

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me. I followed the instructions in the post, and was able to recover a substantial part of my library in iTunes. But now I'm worried that when I synch my iPod to iTunes, it will reduce the content on the iPod to match iTunes. I searched more in the discussions, and see that I might be able to use 3rd party software to copy from iPod to iTunes. any advice if I go that route? Thanks again!

Why is my external hard drive showing up twice on Time Machine?

This is the first time I am using Time Machine because somebody recently gave me an external hard drive.
The external hard drive is appearing twice on Time Machine preferences. One of them is currently backing up and the other one says "Waiting to back up" but I don't want it to back up twice on the same disk.

LaCie external hard drive keeps losing connection to Windows 8.1 computer

My LaCie external hard drive (Rugged version) seems like it keeps losing connection to my brand new Windows 8.1 laptop. The laptop is an HP Pavillion 15-p 133cl TouchSmart Notebook which I just got today. Basically, every few minutes, or if I nudge the external
a bit, the computer will seem like it disconnected and reconnected to the external hard drive in a split second and bring it up in the Windows Explorer. This external hard drive doesn't show any problems connecting to any other computer, but it has occurred
with 2/3 ports on this computer so far. I'm a bit worried, because I definitely DO NOT want the files on this external to get corrupted in any way. What should I do? Thanks a bunch.

may I know your external HDD model, to check which USB version to isolate power and cable connection issue
if this is USB 3.0 try to attached at USB 3.0 at your laptop, your laptop has 2 USB 3.0 and 1 for 2.0, for external HDD with USB 2.0 sometimes need more power / more than 1 connection, sometimes the power will loose
but since the trigger it will disconnect if you nudge the HDD, I suggest back up data to your laptop first, try to change with other data or power cable, try also update your laptop chipset
try to check with other device to isolate port issue

My iphone external hard drive keeps disconnecting so it tells me I disconnected improperly. I have changed electric cord directly to outlet and usb also direct, and it still happens.

I store ALL my photos (400 events) on an external 1T hard drive. The hard drive keeps disconnecting so it get a msg telling me I disconnected improperly basically which is a serious no no. I then have to re-start. I have tried connecting directly to the wall outlet, to a super duper surge protector and also have connected the usb (was on a usb port) directly to the computer. External Hard Drive Keeps Disconnecting on its own

Ive been working on a rather large project on Final Cut Pro for some time now and my SeaGate 1tb FreeAgent external hard drive im using keeps disconnecting on me, this makes it impossible to export large files because it will disconnect before they have enough time to finish the export. Some times the hard drive will stay connected for almost an hour, but usually it will disconnect at around 30 minutes.
Ive tried setting the Energy Saver setting so neither my computer or my display will go to sleep, ever. Ive checked the external harddrive itself with disk utility several times and its always fine. Ive tried different cables, unpluging other unused usb and firewire cables, Ive upgraded my ram, just about everything i can find it the forums, and still no luck. I have other hard drives that i use that work fine. What solutions are out there? Please help.
