Why do my Finder sidebar color tags contain two copies of each file?

Clicking on a color tag category in the Finder sidebar I find I have two copies of each tagged file. This is a whole new phenomenon to me as I use the new Mavericks tagging system. If I Trash one of the two copies it returns the next time I open Finder. This is not only unnecessary clutter, but makes me concerned about which one is the "right" one to use.
Why is this happening, or what am I doing wrong to cause this?

What kind of a Backup is it?
I have a Time Machine backup connected all the time, but don't see those things.
If it is just a "clone" of your internal, then Finder will display the Tags for all attached devices.
If that is the case, I think you might want to provide feedback to Apple and suggest they create a "Privacy List" like in Spotlight to disable looking up Tags on the things in the "Privacy List."
https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Armed with your good advice, I now see the duplicate "cloned" files come from my backup hard drive, which I always have mounted on my desktop. I use that to back up my files periodically using SuperDuper.
Good suggestion about pointing this out to Apple. I suppose I could also unmount my backup hard drive, and remount it only when doing backups, to avoid being bothered by these duplicate files.
Thanks for your thoughtful comments.

  • Why does Mac OX 10.6.8 keep making copies of a file anytime I download, copy, or move a file?

Why does Mac OX 10.6.8 keep making copies of a file anytime I download, copy, or move a file? It will copy, dowload or move the file, then begin making copies until I reboot. This makes it impossible to deal wit hfiles unless I want to spend a lot of time rebooting after every time, then deleting all the redundant copies.

If I understand what you are saying this is very strange.  Sure you tried Reparing Permissions and all that.  Also sure you're aware that when moving a file from the hard disk to an external - the default is to make a copy rather than a move.  If the movement is with the same disk (e.g. hard disk - hard disk) the Default is a Move rather than Copy.
Anyway try this: Move a file between location where you would normally have this problem while holding the Command Key (which triggers a Move rather than a Copy).  I would also try quickly setting up a New User Account and see if the problem is present within this New Account.  This may provide a clue as to what is happening.
Also, what browser are you using when the download problem happens?

    Hi,
When did you encounter this issue, after the backup problem?
Did you mean that the copied email is sent from

  • Imported address book contains six copies of each address

I imported my Outlook Express address book (Address Book.WAB) into TB, but now I have six copies of each address in the imported address book. Deleting the imported address book and importing again only adds another copy of each address. How can I eliminate all the extra copies of each address?

Gosh, after three days cannot anyone tell me how to (COMPLETELY) delete my imported address book so I can start fresh? Each time I think I have deleted my imported address book, I try to import again and the book contains one additional copy of each address. I am up to six copies at present. It seem apparent to me that each time I am not successfully deleting the imported address book

  • Lion Finder sidebar color?

    Hey!
I've just upgraded to Lion and I'm kinda dissapointed of many reasons, like the grey aweful sidebar icons in the finder app.
Is there any solution to change it back to the normal like it was in Snow Leopard?
The other thing is the Mail app. The new surface looks horrible as well, even if I change it to "classical view".
I want the older back! It was good as it was!

But there is an option in CandyBar to change the icons from the side bar, those are different ones than the folders in normal view, you have to change specifically the sidebar icons.

  • How do I duplicate hard links when copying with Finder rather than making two copies of the file?

I have 1.6 TB of Video on one external drive. All of this was imported using iMovie and lives mostly in iMovie events. I then decided I wanted to use Final Cut Pro X for some additional flexibility.
I opened FCPx and imported the iMovie events and movies. As I expected, FCPx made hard links to the files in the iMovie events rather than wholesale copying the events into the original content area. I have found that it is much easier to keep all movie content on one disk rather than having is spread all over creation, so I am trying to make a copy on another larger drive.
I am trying to use Finder to copy the files rather than some other more obtrusive option using the actual applications. The problem is, when I use the finder Copy function, all files that had hard links in the file system are now phyiscally copied twice and are actually duplicated on the new disk. This doubles the size of the the content on the new disk and completely ruins the reason for moving the files in the first place.
Now that I have finally figured out what is going on, I guess I can figure out the proper Unix style commands in the Terminal to make happen what I expect, but I would much rather have Finder duplicate a link if it finds a link. I really want to be able to use iMovie or FCPx on the Event content and only have one copy of the content unless I want to make a modification in one or the other.

    Mark,
I have had a similar problem lately.  I use rsync to perform nightly backups from one internal drive to another.  I noticed (after I started using Final Cut Pro X) that my backup drive had 300G more disk space allocated.  It was only after a long and painful debugging process that I figured out that FCPX had created hard links to my iMovie Events.  I don't have a solution to this problem yet but I wanted to at least mention that I have run into the same challenge.

  • Why do I have two copies of CC apps?

The recent CC update installed a second copy of all the CS6 apps on my Windows 8 PC.
I've read Terry White's Blog of the subject and I understand - more or less - Adobe's rationale.
My question has to do with licensing.
I bought my copy of CS6 through Studica - which Adobe uses to provide the software to non-profit organizations.
We bought it with a one-time payment and were told that we would get subsequent updates.
Now I have two copies of each of the programs - the original one I downloaded and the new CC version.
I have just been ignoring the CC versions since I just use the ones I initially installed.
However, from time to time I have a new app or plug in that wants to load automatically and wants to open the CC version, not the
original. I can't see a way to get it to point to the original version.
I get a CC screen that asks if I want to buy it or do a trial. I don't want to do either and I fear that if I start down that road
I'll have to start paying a subscription fee - which what I avoided with the non-profit version purchase.
So, can in UNinstall the CC version of all the CS6 apps and, if I can, can I prevent any future CC updates like this and just
get updates for my original non-subscription versions?

CTNKnoblock you can remove the CC versions and continue to utilize the Creative Suite 6 license and applications already installed on your computer.  You can find details on how to remove the CC versions at Install and update apps - https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/install-apps.html.
If you do receive a message that your Creative Suite 6 is in trial mode then choose the License this Software option and enter your Adobe ID and serial number.
Finally if you wish to install a fresh copy of Creative Suite 6 you can download the installation files at Download CS6 products.

  • How to find out the textframe contains "stroke color" (or) "fillcolor"?

How to find out the textframe contains "stroke color" (or) "fillcolor" via javascript. Kindly advise me with sample.

I know, this post is quite a while ago, but: This simply does not work for me. Neither for simple PathItems, nor for the characters of a TextFrame.
Working on: Illustrator CS5.5, Mac OS, Javascript
    Simple example:
    var numSelectedObjects = app.activeDocument.selection.length;
// If any objects selected: Get fill and stroke color of the first one
    if(numSelectedObjects > 0){
    alert("Fill Color: " + app.activeDocument.selection[0].fillColor + " / Stroke Color: " + app.activeDocument.selection[0].fillColor);
This returns always CMYKColor, RGBColor or GrayColor, even if there is no Color assigned to the objects stroke or fill!!
For PathItems there is the attribute ".filled" or ".stroked", which returns "true" or "false" and is reliable.
if(app.activeDocument.selection[i].filled){ // works fine with PathItems!
Is there anything similar for Characters? I tried this one, but it does not work (because I think it does not exist):
    if(app.activeDocument.selection[i].textRange.filled){ // does not work!
I just need to find out, if the characters in a textfield have got a fill or stroke color. Reliable.
It would be very nice to get help from anybody!
    Thanks a lot in advance!

  • Why can my wife see my Macbook in her Finder sidebar, but I can't see hers?

Wanting to share files, I checked my Finder sidebar and couldn't find my wife's Macbook listed there. I could have sworn that it used to be displayed there under 'SHARED', but even the 'SHARED' is no longer visible. On my wife's Macbook, she has 'SHARED' with the name of my Macbook underneath, with her able to select it and access files, like I should be able to. I have checked settings for Finder and Sharing in Preferences, and our settings, from what I can see, are identical. If I select Finder, and click 'Go' in the menu and select Network, her Macbook is listed, and I can connect to it from there. Once more, in Finder preferences, if I tick 'Connected Servers' under 'Show these items on the desktop', my wife's Macbook appears on the desktop.
Can someone please tell me why I can't get it to appear under 'SHARED' on my sidebar, just like she can with mine?
    We both have Leopard 10.5.2.
    Thanks.

Thanks for your post, but as I said, I have checked both our settings and they are identical- as my wife must have these checked in order to see mine, then I must (and indeed do) have them checked too.
However I have just, in the last minute, found the source of the problem. Open DNS. This was the one thing I have done on mine and not on my wife's. I have removed the open DNS servers from my DNS list and rebooted, and SHARED is now visible again on the sidebar along with my wife's Macbook under it. I found this site here which explains it a little more, along with a way to fix the problem-
    http://www.youbitch.org/blog/2007/nov/11/note-to-self-missing-shared-in-leopard- sidebar/
However, the solution looked too complicated for me, so I just removed Open DNS instead- it's not worth the hassle.

  • Why can't I find the color profile info in the library ?

Why can’t I find the color profile info in the library ?
It’s sometimes necessary to convert to sRGB for some applications ( internet, some beamers in clubs,…).
I convert them but afterwards it is nice to have the possibility to check this out and should be possible in lightroom, the info is present why not showing it ( it is not so easy to go in finder and look at it in info for every image)?
Since I’m always working in Adobe profile for printing and so this is important to know !
But no trace of it anywhere….
    Thx for any reply.

The disconnect here is many (including me) don't reimport rendered JPEGs
into our Lightroom Catalogs. Why you are doing that is beyond me. You
have the original and can recreate any rendered file at any time.
Storing the derivative JPEGs is redundant, creates additional confusion
and serves little real purpose. Exported versions are considered
    discarable by many.
Yes, understand what you're meaning. but the fact is that I started rather recently with lightroom. So my images where classified in directory's and subdirectory's...already.
I think that this is the major problem. This is always a problem when you step in a new system.
Let's say I am going to submit to a photographic society, I have an Export
preset created that exports to proper size and color space for
projection. It creates a file. I send it to the club. Then I delete it.
Why save it? I can recreate it. Then I don't have to manage it, search
for it, or worse yet, risk confusion with my original file or othe
    resultant derivatives.
The fact that I like to keep them is
indeed an inborn result of the "pré-lightroom period". A bad habitude
indeed. I'm thinking now of deleting them, will maybe better. On the other side
I still have them just for me in order to know which ones I used and when.
    Another bad habitude.
    But
since I'm not a professional photographer I'm mostly confronted with the time
issue and it is for me easier to take existing files ready for use...
    ( doesn't mean you’re not confronted
    with this problem
Today place for jpeg's is rather easy since the Gb's are almost free...
Same is true of a client photo. They want an 8x10. I go to the retouched
original, create a JPEG from an 8x10 preset in the proper dimensions and color space. Send it to the lab. Then, I can delete it.
One of the strengths of Lightroom is that it creates many fewer
intermediate file versions along the way toward final creation. Another
strength is that you can save (via snapshots in Develop) your
derivatives, export, and discard them without having to create, import
and manage additional files on disk. In the old days of just Photoshop
you might end up with a dozen or more files on your disk for every
worked file. With Lightroom, you only need one or two.
Will look deeper in your proposed workflow...and yes I'm comming from the old days.
That said, if you want to keep the derivatives for purposes down the road,
that is up to you but I don't understand why they need to be inserted
    into your catalog.
Since my catalog is made in the time
from before lightroom I’m still having all these directory's and
    subdirectory's...
    Easier
for me since even with back-ups of the catalogue still afraid for crashes. And
I keep liking these directory structure because for the moment it's lighrtroom
and tomorrow it can be another program, you never know. It's like a website, "on line versoin only", big problem when a firm at some moment stop to provide this possibility.
I think I will try to go deeper in "how to use lightroom better..."
    thanks

  • Why O Why did Apple removed the sidebar colors?

Why O Why did Apple removed the sidebar colors in the new Aperture update? I used those colors to organize my workflow.
Everything is Greyscale now. Isn't Photography all about colors? If I wanted a greyscale user interface I would have bought a PC ...

It's the new design since Lion - Iphoto already has gone gray before Aperture See these links:

  • Why do we get a number next to a shared device in finder sidebar?

Does anyone know how to stop the appearance of a number next to a shared device number in the Finder sidebar window?
    OSX Yosemite, version 10.10.2
    Thanks.

There are several possible causes for this behavior.
    1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local". Resolve the name conflict by renaming one or more of them in the Sharing preference pane.
    2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
    3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is a bug in OS X that may only affect some models. You can avoid it as follows:
Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences and unlock the settings, if necessary. Select the Power Adapter  tab, if there is one. Uncheck the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    if it's checked.
    4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
    5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
    6. If the router is an Apple device, it may need to be restarted.
    7. A third-party Bonjour device on the network is malfunctioning. Finding out which is a process of elimination.
    8. There is more than one DHCP server on the network. Typically, there would be two or more wireless access points configured to act as routers.
    9. See this support article.
    10. Back up all data. Make notes of your settings in the Network preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. You will need to recreate the network settings.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • How can I make Color Tags color the whole line?!

    All,
I have been using Color Tags every since they first  appeared on the Mac. It WAS great to color code files and folder of which I now have hundreds done that way. Problem is that now Apple has done away with the easy to see, easy to use colored line and replaced it with a stupid tiny dot. How can I get my colored lines back? Why does Apple keep changing things that have worked for year into things the are HARDER to use?
    Thanks,
    Dan

"Labels" has been changed to "Tags" in Mavericks. It appears that you cannot modify the appearance of Tags in Mavericks at this point.
There have been several threads on the subject in this forum, and the some of the suggested solutions are to revert your OS back to the system you had prior to Mavericks, or investigate 3rd party software such as Pathfinder, which allow you to modify the  presentation in the finder -
    www.cocoatech.com/pathfinder/
Apple does not monitor these threads, so the only way to make sure way to make sure Apple hears your opinion on this is to give your feedback directly to Apple:
