Why do my InDesign documents report my ported plugin as missing?

I recently ported a plugin from CS4 to CS5, but when I open my old InDesign documents associated with the CS4 plugin, CS5 reports my plugin as missing (I can open the plugin and use it just fine, so it's obviously not missing).
I have one CriticalTag defined for my plugin, but I haven't changed my persistent data between the two versions in any way that I'm aware.
Shouldn't Indesign associate my ported plugin with these old documents? And if not, what am I missing?

What does it look like in ID when you turn on Overprint Preview?

Why dose an InDesign document loose the link to it's folder everytime the software upgrades?

Agreed. I have a couple thousand forms in my system. No sooner did I get through many of them after ugrading to CC, Adobe upgraded again. It begins all over again. [sigh]

  • Why does an InDesign document exported to PDF using data merge result in very different sized PDFs?

I've got a small sheet that I update on occasion and use data-merge to add people's names to the sheet. It's very much like an invitation where every invite has a different name on it. I use the data merge feature to select a list of names and then they get inserted into the document. Then I use the Export to PDF command in the data merge window to create a pdf that has all of the invitations in one big file. They are four-up per page on letter sized paper. Sometimes I print 2000 of them and the resulting PDF is about 2mb, sometimes I print 1000 of them and it's 20mb. Document, settings, method of issueing the commands to output the files are all the same. The only difference is the list of names and those are all almost identical in length. Anyone know what could be happening?
One clue is that it takes about a minute to run when the result is going to be a small file and about 5 or more minutes when the result is going to be a large file.
My guess is that sometimes it includes a copy of the images once per page, and sometimes it only includes them once per document, but I'd love to know why and how to control that. Thanks.

And you verified that the links panel shows everything as up-to-date?
The only other things I can suggest at the moment are the standard two trouble shooting steps: Remove minor corruption by exporting and Replace Your Preferences

  • Why is my InDesign document drifting to the left on its own?

When I pull up a file it immediately starts moving to the left of the screen...sometimes disappearing to the point that I cannot work on it.  Even if I go to the bottom of the page and move it back, it just moves back to the left on its own.   Why is this happening?  What can I do to make it stop and follow my direction.

I found out the problem.  It was a mouse malfunction that only reacted to my InDesign files.   When I switched out the mouse, the problem went away.
Thanks for your suggestion though to restart.   That quite often works.

  • Why does my InDesign document become unsaved every time I print?

I save my document. I print it. When the print dialog closes, my document is now unsaved.
What has changed? Can I disable this behavior?
It is quite unsettling when unintended "changes" are occuring to my document. Thanks.

This is due to ID updating the Printer profile attached to the document. No other changes are made.

  • InDesign CS6 Crash on placing a file on to indesign document  , Crash Report is attached .

    Hi ,
InDesign CS 6 is working fine in Mac mini and in MacBookPro it always crash on placing a file on to InDesign Document .
    Crash Report : http://pastebin.com/fUPiYd0c
    I have tried :
    1) uninstalling and reinstalling CS 6
    2) Using with different accounts including admin
    3)Troubleshooting as below mentioned  :
    a)  Trash preferences   (cmd-opt-shift-control while starting InDesign) "
Either corrupt preferences (as above), or perhaps the permissions on the folders that contain the preferences are such that InDesign can't properly write to them. ( it sometimes does happen).
    b) Deleting the below folders: Before deleting the below directories/files please take a backup(just for safe).  Quit In Design and  try removing the  following directories/files (InDesign will re-create them at start up):
    ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe InDesign CS5.5
    ~/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign
    ~/Library/Caches/com.adobe.InDesign
    ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.InDesign.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.InDesign.plist.lockfile
    ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.adobe.InDesign.savedState
Note:  The user Library directory is hidden under MacPro/Lion. You can get there in the Finder by holding down Option and then going to the Go menu (other ways are fine too).
Please let me know if i am missing something .
    Thanks in advance ,

Thanks Peter this definitely helps me , let me validate and come back to thanks again .

  • Why am I having lines/borders appearing around my placed Illustrator images in my Indesign Document?

After I save my InDesign Document and close it... When I open it back up again. There are borders around all of my Illustrator placed images.
I can't seem to find out what is causing them or how to get rid of them.
When I am working on the file with it open they are not there.. it's only after I save, close and reopen.
    What the heck????

    Thanks for asking Will....
I've gotten so confused with back issues of the file....saved in InDesign CC that I just started over..
Was simpler to do that than to try to fix the one I was working on.....
But while I have you trying to help me..
Could you tell me how to set the document setup for a new document in InDesign CC to inches?
I tried going into the preferences.... it's not there.. Looked through all of the preferences.. still can't find it.
The documents I'm working on are 47" x 28" or thereabouts and I am having to go back to InDesign 5.5
create the document there then open it in InDesign CC to have it the right size.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Once uploaded, my indesign document has a different typeface.  Why is the font replaced?

We have a standard branding font that we are required to use throughout all of our marketing collateral.  The cloud has replaced it with Times when it's saved.  Thanks for your help!

We do not have access to your customer fonts. The fonts we support for image previews of InDesign files is documented here http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/fontinstall/cs6installedfonts.html.
One solution is to convert the InDesign document to a PDF and upload. The PDF will retain the custom font. And the image preview will display as you expect.

  • Black (K = 100) text in InDesign being reported as CMYK in Acrobat

These are the settings in my InDesign documents:
CMYK working color space: US Sheetfed Uncoated v2
    Preserve embedded profiles
    Text set to K = 100
When I exported to PDF, these were the settings under Output > Color:
    No color conversion
    Include all profiles
I opened the document in Acrobat and went to Advanced > Output Preview to make sure that what was supposed to be grayscale was grayscale. When I ran the pointer over the text, it came up in CMYK values and not K = 100. That was a surprise. When I changed the SIMULATION PROFILE in the OUTPUT PREVIEW window to US Sheetfed Uncoated v2 (the same profile as in InDesign) the text was listed as K = 100. I assumed the reading being given was actually the color numbers, not 'mapped' color numbers i.e. the color numbers if they were converted to the new space.
Anyway, it was obvious I wasn't on top of this, so I went to ADVANCED > PREFLIGHT >LIST ALL NON BW OBJECTS to check what was BW and what was not. Up came several hundred items, including every font in the document.
I could force the text to BW, but I had to go back to InDesign and change the settings (Output > Color) to:
    No color conversion
    i Don't include profiles
Aha! When I repeated the above tests in Acrobat, no matter what simulation profile I chose, text was always shown as K = 100. A list of all non-BW objects listed only color images -- just what I wanted.
I need a few hints on why this occurred.
QUES: Why should including a colour profile when exporting from InDesign cause K = 100 to map to CMYK? Surely the color numbers going to Acrobat are unaltered out of InDesign (i.e. K = 100 is sent as K = 100) so Acrobat must be changing them. InDesign says of "No Color Conversion": "Uses existing color numbers and doesn't convert them". So why does Acrobat report them as changed?

    Guy,
You only need to include a profile if you need to convert to another CMYK space when the PDF is outputa typical case for including profiles would be one where you don't really know what the print destination is and your CMYK values might need to be reconverted at output. If you don't want additional CMYK conversions (you know the correct destination is US Sheefed) then export as PDFX/1-a, that preset includes an intent but not a profile and your black will not get converted.
Unwanted color conversions indicate that there are conflicting profiles somewhere.

  • How to embed data into an InDesign Document

    Hello everybody,
I'm porting a QuarkXTension to InDesign CS3 on PC but, maybe, I've found a showstopper...
The current xtension writes some collected data into a document slug that is retrieved by an external application simply scanning the content of the file.
I need to maintain the same way with InDesign but I've discovered that the persistent data added to a document workspace doesn't stay all together when is more than few KBytes (everything seems to be ok until 2 KBytes but that's too little) inside the InDesign document but is scattered on many locations. Of course this makes the work of the external application impossible.
Is there any way to command/force inDesign to write the persistent data insidde the file in one single chunk?
I understand this is something unusual but that's the way that complex publishing workflow works and can't be changed in that part.
Thanks a lot in advance for any help.
    Best regards,
    Luca Severini

I think I have found a possible solution to embed my data in a way readable by an external application. To use the XMP toolkit.
Very interesting the fact XMP Toolkit includes the source of a simple command line tool that parses the xmp embedded into InDesign file.
The same source can be easily modified to get all the objects contained in the document aka database.
    Bye
    Luca

  • Packaging an InDesign document with Placed Illustrator Files which contain PLACED GRAPHICS!

I've got an InDesign document 215 pages long.  Each page contains a placed Illustrator document... and each Illustrator document contains a placed TIFF.
When I package the InDesign Document the Illustrator files are gathered into the new location, but InDesign does not gather the TIFFs.  I need to get this material to the book designer, but relinking 215 pages is going to be a very risky and time consuming process--one that will have to be done OVER and OVER again as the project moves from one location to another.  Can anyone recommend a solution?  Why doesn't InDesign look for nested files?
Does anybody understand what I'm talking about?
    --Jay

The reason behind link (.psd in layers) means in the future it can be edited.
If the person receiving to package needs to edit the layers of a PSD placed in an Illustrator file, then yes you would have to manually include the layered PSDs. But if it's just a matter of ensuring full res and color managed output downstream then saving as PDF does that and preserves the links to layered files locally. So if I save as PDF trash a link and reopen the PDF in Illustrator it will look for the link:
If you save as .ai with the links embedded, the users downstream would be able to unembed and edit a flattened version of the placed art.

  • Opening XFL in flash is maintaining the geometry of the indesign document

    Hi ,
I have expoerted XFL out of indesign document .The indesign document contains 3 pages and each page contains a text element .Exported into XFL and opened in flash CS4 that contains 3 frames and each frame contains a movieclip. And inside each movieclip whatever the text element in the indesign is existing but geometry of the text element was different in flash as compared to indesign .How i can achieve same geometry in flash.can some one help in this.
    Rejani R

OK, I see it now.  For some reason I had it in my head that all you could do was to set the Adobe PDF Presets, then export the entire document using those presets. I wasn't paying attention when exporting.
Out of curiosity, why can you set the PDF presets seperately, when it's all there again when you are actually exporting to PDF?  What's the advantage?
    Thanks

  • Automatic Hyperlinking of a 30,000 page InDesign Document

    Hello,
I am trying to figure out how to best develop a system of automatic hyperlinking in an InDesign document (I know this is usually done small-scale and manually). This document will eventually be exported as an e-book or interactive PDF. Ideally, users would be able to click a link within the document and it would lead them to another link internally, further down in the document. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best incorporate a more technical program into InDesign, or how to go about this? Any help would be much appreciated. Also, is anyone aware of how to create this document so that updates that are added to the 30,000 pages can be automatically 'pushed' to the subscribers or readers Desktop?
    Thank you very much,
    Ali

You have facing pages, so you should set up your document as document with facing pages.
You should have done it with New document but you can change it with File > Document Setup.
You will have to change your master to 2 pages and to allow to shuffle the pages.
Shifting pages are shifted when you use the page tool. It can happen more easily with non facing pages.
Was there a specific reason, why you choose not to use facing pages at the first place?
With the page tool you can shift pages.

  • Text looking terrible in InDesign document...

I am running into an issue putting together a marketing report for my work. The small photo caption text (frutiger light size 8) looks terrible when I PDF it.
But in addition to it looking terrible when I pdf it, it also looks terrible in the InDesign document if I get too close to an image.
I have tried putting all the text on a separate layer that is on top of everything else (including anything that is a transparency).
The body text (which is frutiger regular size 9) looks totally fine.
I do have transparencies on my pages but I have to because my boss likes us to have drop shadows when we show sample document pages.
How can I fix this? The proposal document is going to be delivered digitally, so even if it prints ok that wont work because most likely it will only be viewed on screen.
These images show how the text changes depending on how close or far away I get.

Does it look bad in the PDF on screen only or also when printed on a high resolution device?
If the text is above all transparent objects than it is not a transparency flattening problem, although you did not tell us anything about your PDF export settings.
If it looks good on high resolution print but bad on screen only it might be an issue of the used font only. To be honest, on your screen shot I don't see the problem here what you mentioned. Could you link your problematic INDD and PDF here. Not the original file, it understnd that it is not possible for you, but a small file where you reconstruct this problem with a placeholder image and blind text, one page only to keep things small.

  • Find the Missing font text content in indesign document

How to find and get the missing font content in the indesign documents by using the SDK. give a tips and techniques.
    Anybodys help me.

It wont answer your question, but you could have this problem too:
I have a problem in my current project where text frame having no text make the document report the usage of a font wich we dont want the project to use (times by exemple). The problem being that Indesign report usage of a font wich is in fact not applied to any text. Weird!
The easy fix is to identify those items (text frame class + no text) and reassign them as "unassigned".
