Why do my iPhoto movies not show up on iMovie

I have imported all my videos from my iphone to iphoto.  I can not access them through imovie but I can see all the photos. Why is this?

Yes that works - but it's quoite manual, and has a problem -
1. when I do that - iMovie sets the date and time of the movie to the import date ( today) instead of the footage date, so I have to go through each one adjusting the date and time to the footage date.
It would be seemless if the Event Library\ iPhoto Videos simply shows the movies that are in iPhoto!

  • IPhoto movies not showing up in iMovie

I have looked at a few other topics, and I think I have discovered the source of the problem, but I don't know how to fix it.
    I have: iMovie '08 and iPhoto '08.
I went to QT player and selected "Show Movie Inspector" to look at the format. The two videos that both show up have these formats:
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
    H.264 Decoder, 320 x 240, Millions
    and
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
    H.264 Decoder, 480 x 320, Millions
But the ones that DON'T show up have this format:
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
    H.264 Decoder, 1280 x 720, Millions
So I'm assuming the problem is the size of the videos. Is this correct? If so, how can I change them? And if this wouldn't be the problem, does anyone have any other suggestions?

But in iMovie, only two of these movies show up in the iPhoto videos events. How do I get the third one to show up in iMovie?
Not sure, but try this: Close iMovie. From iPhoto, drag the AVI movie to the Desktop. This will create a copy on the Desktop. Now drag this file back into iPhoto. You will be asked if you wish to import a duplicate - click on Import. Now open iMovie - hopefully the newly imported AVI movie in iPhoto will now be recognised by iMovie, which will commence creating thumbnails. If desired, you can delete the original movie from iPhoto.
If this doesn't work, try converting the AVI file to another format. This can be done in either QuickTime 7 or QuickTime X, depending on the conversion required. Open the AVI file on your Desktop (the one dragged from iPhoto earlier) in QuickTime X. If the movie is 640 x 480 go to File>Save As and choose the format HD 480p. That will save the movie in H.264 format using 2 Mbits/s at up to 640 x 480 resolution. If your original movie is in some other resolution, you will probably be given other Save As options, so choose the most appropriate. If you have QuickTime 7, you can export using a much wider range of formats. However, the best to use are AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) or the H.264 format - both work perfectly with iMovie '09.
Once you have the exported file (whether from QuickTime 7 or X), import it to iMovie. In iMovie's menu choose File>Import Movies. You should now be in business!

  • IPhoto movies not showing up in "iPhoto Movies" tab of iMovie

Some of my iPhoto movies aren't showing up in the "iPhoto Movies" tab under the events browser. Does anyone know of a way to ensure that all of them show up? They are all of the same video format, so I don't know why some are appearing and others are not.

  • Most recently uploaded iphoto videos not showing up in imovie

when i try to use iphoto videos in my imovie project, the most recently uploaded videos do not show up.
this has happened to me before, and i got around the issue by importing the original video files (through finder) into imovie. the clips that weren't showing up eventually did show up, long after i needed them.
so, here i am again, trying to edit recently uploaded clips that aren't showing up. i tried closing iphoto and imovie, then opening them again. no luck. has anyone else had this probleml? why won't the most recently uploaded videos show up for days after they've been uploaded? i could import the files through finder, like i have in the past, but that takes up extra hard drive space, and takes way too long. i was under the impression that the ilife apps are supposed to just work with each other... intuitively and such
everything is up to date. here's my specs:
    MacBook Pro - 13-inch, mid 2010
    OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
    iPhoto '11 - version 9.4.2 (710.42)
    iMovie '11 - version 9.0.8 (1778)
the videos were recorded on an iphone 5

Usually any videos in iPhoto appear in iMovie '09 in the item "iPhoto Videos" at the top of the listing in the iMovie Events browser. Clicking on this item (heading) reveals the video thumbnails to the right of the Events listing. However, I've noticed that my old 3gp videos from an earlier mobile phone don't show up in the Events, whereas some other formats do (for example, avi).
MPEG Streamclip will convert 3gp files to a suitable format for import to iMovie. I'm not sure if it will handle 3g2. In MPEG Streamclip, navigate to your movie and open it, or simply drag it into the workspace. Now export it as a QuickTime movie (.mov) in the format AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) or H.264. The default settings for these formats should be OK. Both these formats work well with iMovie. I just tested a 3gp movie, exported from MPEG Streamclip as AIC - this worked perfectly with iMovie.
To import in iMovie go to File>Import - Movies, then navigate to your movie.
You can download the free MPEG Streamclip here:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
PS After posting this, I realised that you can also export as AIC or H.264 from QuickTime 7.6.6 (although I do have the pro version - not sure if you need that). In QT go to File>Export and select Movie to QuickTime Movie then choose Options and select the format.

  • IPhoto videos not showing up in iMovie

I researched this topic in a couple of previous discussions and don't seem to find a solution for my situation. I have iMovie 09 and iPhoto 11. I have lots of videos in iPhoto that I shot with iPhone 4 this year, but none of them are showing up in iMovie. iMovie says "updating iPhoto library" every once in a while when I open up iMovie, but no movies show up under iPhoto view. Anyone knows what the solution could be?

    Hi Folks,
Your iPhoto access in other programs such as iMovie depend on ~/library/preferences/com.apple.iApps.plist. Whenever you add new videos to iPhoto and close iPhoto, this file gets updated. If corrupted, pull the plist, open iPhoto and a new movie and then quit. See if iMovie picks it up.
As long as you have the latest dot release, I believe you should be fine in compatibility.

I had this problem and this fixed it. The problem started for me right after I upgraded iPhoto 9.4.1 to 9.4.2. I had to quit both apps, remove the plist file, launch iPhoto, then quit iPhoto, then launch iMovie... then iMovie asked about thumnails for videos and the iPhoto videos were back in iMovie.

  • LiveType Movie not showing up in iMovie

I created a LiveType 9 second introduction then imported the .mov file into iMovie (all looked good on preview), but when I play it back. It does not display the LiveType movie. I went back several times, re-rendered with background, etc. Any clues????

    Any solution?

  • In IPhoto I changed movie dates after thumb nails were created in IMovie but the new dates are not showing up in IMovie.  Is there someway to refresh the IPhoto event in IMovie?

Background:  I'm transferring file folders from a Visa laptop via an external hard drive to my IMac.  In the folders are photos and videos from different cameras.  SO I first tried to import to IMovie but it would not recognize any of the files.  So then I imported into IPhoto and both photos and videos were imported and I created events for each folder.  When I first opened IMovie I had to wait for it to create "thumb nails".  Then I could view the events in IMovie BUT the video clips are not together because they have vastly different dates and are mixed with videos from other events.  I looked at the dates and said I can fix that in IPhoto which i did but those new dates are not showing up in IMovie.    I think I need to somehow refresh the event data that Imovie is using but have not found how to do that in either IPhoto or IMovie.
I'm doing this on three events with about 100 photos and videos.  But I have many 1000s more to do so need to know how to either fix this or delete these events, reimport, change the dates, then open again in IMovie.   I'm sure that would work but I can't understand why changing the dates in IPhoto is not being reflected in IMovie.
    Appreciate any tips or pointers.
OBTW this is my first question as a first time Apple owner.

It was suggested I move this question to IPhoto or IMovie which I did.
Well moving to a different discussion group did not provide an answer to this question either. But what I finally did was import one batch of photos and videos into IPhoto for a given day at a time. Working with these I could change the date and times in order to get them in the original sequench taken. Then I would create an album with that batch. These would all be on the same day (IMove was closed for this phase). Then I would open IMovie, generate the thumbnails for that album, and select the album I had created. This was necessary because the importing process in IPhoto was using incorrect dates for my video so it was a real struggle finding them in IMove until I developed this approach.
I believe that this whole process was so screwy because I was importing from an external hard drive not a camera. I had these photos on a PC and did not have the original cameras to use to import directly which I am fairly sure would have made this easier!

  • IPhoto mov files do not show up in iMovie

    Hi there,
I know that there are similar cases discussed in this forum, but mine is slightly different, I think...
Within iPhoto I have imported various mov videos, but they never showed in iMovie while using iLive 09. After the appStore opened up, I upgraded first only iMovie to iMovie '11.
After this update suddenly all my iPhoto '09 videos showed up in iMovie... that was a positive surprise
After a couple of weeks, I had enough courage to upgrade iPhoto as well (which was not as effortlessly as it seemed at first, but not as bad as some did experience)
After this, again none of my still existing mov videos from iPhoto do now show up in iMovie.....
    How is that possible?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I have a similar problem. I recorded 15 screen captures in MOV format and added them to iPhoto. Only 9 show up in iMovie. I'd love to hear a solution to this problem.

  • I imported some 24P HD videos from my DSLR to Aperture but these videos do not show up in iMovie '09 for editing purposes. Although my previous 24P HD Videos from iPhoto '09 show up. Why can't I access these videos stored in Aperture library?

I imported some 24P HD videos from my DSLR to Aperture but these videos do not show up in iMovie '09 for editing purposes. Although my previous 24P HD Videos from iPhoto '09 show up. Why can't I access these videos stored in Aperture library? I assumed that like  the videos in iPhoto, I would be able to access the videos in Aperture through iMovie. Come on Apple! I am starting to get frustrated with your products here. And this is saying a lot when I have been using and loving apple products for the last 4 years.

Hi. My camera is a Canon 600D. And yes my videos are stored in the Aperture library and they are not referenced. Even then I tried to select all the videos in Aperture and clicked 'consolidate masters' and there was a messge that said all 'none of the files are referenced',... so they didn't need consolidating.
I also tried preferences> export> external video editor > choose > iMovie. And then right click on the video to edit with imovie. Even then the video didn't show up in iMovie. It seems like the only option for me is to import the videos directly to iMovie which means there will be two versions of the same file stored in my computer eating up space.
    APPLE. What are you doing?

  • Why are my movies not showing on my Mac Book, which is the computer that I used to purchase the movie, but showing on my IMAC at home...I am currently deployed.

why are my movies not showing on my Mac Book, which is the computer that I used to purchase the movie, but showing on my IMAC at home...I am currently deployed so this ***** a bit. Also how do I keep this incedent from happending in the future?

No, this is not the case. I know where i purchased the movie and I also know movies cant be added to the cloud such as music, TV shows can.  The instance happened during the dowload. I think that depending which computer is up and running and the bandwith allocated on either network, which ever computer that finishes first is the one that gets the movie. Just a thought. So next time I will ensure my IMAC is not running. I think that fixes it.
    Thanks

  • My movies are not showing up in iMovie application?

    Hi,
I just uploaded 5 movies from my camera to my iMac using iPhoto. I can see them all in there. Here is a photo.
When I drag the movies out you can see in this picture above the iPhoto app (top left). If you notice an older one has the Quicktime symbol and the newer ones have the picture of the video. These do not show up in iMovie and I'm not sure why.
    S.

There was no option of Movie to TIFF but an Audio to TIFF and other ones. I chose the Movie to Quicktime movie and it didn't work, also tried the audio to TIFF and it didn't work.
TIFF??? Who said anything about TIFF compression? "TIFF" is a graphic image compression format that will be listed in the option window of the "Movie to Picture" Export pop-up. "AIFF," on the other hand, is an audio compression format that is compatible with iMovie '08. In any case, sorry -- I should have said "Sound to AIFF" here.
NOTE: It is not necessary to extract the audio to a new player before performing this audio conversion, but I usually use this work flow in case I should do something idiotic and end or accidentally ruining my source file. In addition, if your original audio is mono, you should probably use a mono setting for the AIFF conversion but either will work here.
After Add to Selection and Scale I assumed I should also go to Edit and click paste which I did.
If you have the "Properties" window open for your original clip, you will see that the "Add to Selection and Scale" Edit option adds a second audio track to the movie (which then allows you to delete the original incompatible audio track). If you then immediately perform an additional "Paste" action, you will note that the "pasted" audio is added to the end of the track which was previously added by the "Add to Selection and Scale" action and you end up with a clip twice as long with audio repeated and no video for the second half.
The second one where I chose sound to AIFF would play all the way through fine and then would repeat the whole movie again with only the sound and no picture showing. It wouldn't show up though either when I tried to open iMovie.
See explanation above for double playback. As to why the AIFF file would not import, did you remember to delete the sound track with the incompatible µ-Law audio? As long as that track is in your clip, it will not import.

  • ITunes movies not showing up on Apple TV

I'm having some trouble with my movies not showing up on Apple TV.
The movies I am missing are not purchased from iTunes but I have converted them using Handbrake. I've double checked the format and they seem to be what's required from what I've read in other threads.
I've also made sure they are in the "movies" category and not "home movies."
I'm not the most computer savy person... most of what I know is just from reading threads.  Can someone help?
Here is the format of a movie that's not showing up:
    H.264, 720 x 304, Millions
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 48.00 kHz
    Movie FPS: 23.98
    Playing FPS: 23.98
    Data Size: 1.24 GB
    Data Rate: 938.58 kbits/sec
    Normal Size: 720 x 304 pixels
    Current Size: 720 x 304 pixles

RogerOut makes some good points and this feels to me like a ham fisted attempt by Apple to take control of my media in a way that I don't want.  The stuff it is choosing to call "home movie" is 100% legit movies, but not ones I bought through the itunes store.  So I load a movie and then it mysteriously does not show up in my Apple TV because it has defaulted to "home movie".
What I still fail to understand is what the heck is the purpose of this apart from annoying users who's stuff now does not appear on ATV without explanation or warning.  So glad to have this forum to help me, but why should I have to do this to figure out how to overcome a stupid thing that Itunes is doing to my movie (it is a movie!)?
As I say though, what possible benefit is it for a users media to be labelled in this way and anyway, why does calling it a home movie make it unreadable in ATV?

  • Why is the software update not showing up in general settings?

Why does my software update not show up in general settings?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.1.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.
You can no longer update to iOS 6.x, or down grade the iOS.

iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623
If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and antivirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 7.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    Go into the iPad's Settings.
Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.
     Cheers, Tom

  • IPhoto is not showing photos that i have saved on an external drive. I can see tht the photos are on the drive, but iPhoto is not showing them. Help!!

Iphoto is not showing the photos that I know are stored on the external drive. I can see that there is 45 Gig of photos stored on the drive as they appear in finder when looked for, but I cannot see them in iPhoto.
I have used the external drive as the default location for my iPhoto library and not had this problem before.
I had a message earlier about generating thumbnails. I also had iMovie running this morning. This is when the problem began.
Have tried restarting computer and all the obvious things.
    Also tried rebuilding the library.
    Please help!

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Imported .mov files not showing up in IMovie

I downloaded 6-7 .mov files yesterday.   All fairly short 5-10 second clips.  The first 3 imported just fine and showed up in IMovie where I am editing a movie.
Afterwards, when I selected "import" the computer responded the same way, as if it was importing, creating thumbnails, etc and the video shows up in finder in the right place but it does not show up in IMovie and I cannot use it in my movie.
I selected "show all clip" and still they do not show up
I tried importing to iPhoto first and then to iMovie but it still does not show up.   It does the same thing - acts like it is importing, creating thumbnails etc.
THe first three that I did are still there, just fine.

Thanks for responding. These videos were shot on a colleague's camera then loaded to an FTP server for me to download. I have them as MP4s (though I've tried to import them after converting to .mov and .avi, still to no avail).
I've loaded them into iPhoto, but still nothing shows up in iMovie when I click the "iPhoto Videos" tab. It's like iMovie can't see them, even though I can see and play them when I go back to iPhoto.
One other point of interest: I tried the same process in my older version of iMovie HD, and there they would load only as audio.
    I'm flummoxed.
