Why do my line/section breaks disappear ?

Can anyone please help ?
I have been writing a series of practical police law guides called Pocketpolis. There is a free demo available on the iBook store
The problem I'm having is I write the guide using Pages. On my Pages version my line/section breaks work fine however by the time the book gets published, they disappear, leading to a messy appearance.
If anyone wants an example of what I'm talking about, you can download my book. Go to page 4. After the link for "defence" that should be the end of the page however the top of the next page appears at the bottom of page 4, when really it should start afresh on page 5. There is no line or section break, as there is on my Pages version.
Any ideas ?

I can't delete section breaks in page,

Hi there, this is my first time using sections in Pages. I've tried your online tutorials but I don't seem to be able to combine two sections together, because I can't work out how to delete the section breaks without deleting the document.
The dotted blue line, which I imagine I'm supposed to be fn+delete-ing deletes the substance of the page also. I'm not sure if it makes much difference but the pages I'm working on are only using pictures.
I need to get the sections right for my TOC.
I really appreciate your help. I'm loving my mac, but this bits giving me a headache!

Hi poolpony
I suspect you have a lot of pictures mixed in with paragraph returns.
When you have a combination of images with the default word wrap on, not quite filling up the width of the page they can interact in unpredictable ways. This can make them pop and disappear when the page they are on disappears from under them.
Select the images and:
+Inspector > Wrap > Object Placement > Floating+
also:
+Inspector > Wrap > uncheck Object Causes Wrap+
Since there are many ways your returns, inline graphics, wrap and section breaks can interact, if you still have problems email me the file by clicking on my blue name and I'll fix it.

Print to PDF from Word 2011 creates problems at section breaks

I have a user trying to create a pdf of his thesis. He created the thesis on Microsoft Word 2011 for Mac, and we use Acrobat 10. It has a number of section breaks where he switches from portrait to landscape and back. When he tries to print to PDF, not only does the thesis get split into an individual document at each section break (annoying, but not a big issue), but when he tries to reassemble the document there is an adjustment in margin and several extra lines of space at the top of each section. I've seen workarounds such as opening the individual sections in Preview and stitching them together that way, but it still leaves the extra space at the beginning of each section break, as well as the adjustment in margin. Has anyone found a workaround for this?

I had the same problem with a Word document and figured out the problem. Word seems to be spitting out separate PDF documents based on the page setup. So under File -> Page Setup you get a dialog box with the settings for the page, and usually a "Format for" dropdown and a "Paper Size" option. If these setting are not the same for the whole document, Word throws a wobbley and generates a PDF for each page setup.
My solution (works where all of the pages are the same format).
File -> Page Setup
Settings: Choose "Microsoft Word" from the dropdown box
Apply Page Setup settings to: Entire Document.
This will setup up the entire document to use the same page settings, and will fix the problem for those of us who are wanting a document that all has the same page settings. (This won't work if you are mixing page sizes.)

Is there any way to save an Adobe Acrobat X Pro pdf file as a Word file WITHOUT section breaks?

I need to save (export) several pdf files as Word files. I need the Word files to NOT have section breaks. Is this possible to do? I have tried the options in the Settings (Retain flowing text; Retain page layout) but it does not help.

Actually when thate are saved as Word what you see on the screen is what you get in Word. Where the lines end show as returns so you may have to hand remove all returns to join all parts of a sentence. So there may be section breaks or page breaks that you have to remove.

Table on Page One Blocking Layout/Section Break & Distinct Headers/Footers

Is there any way to start a new Header/Footer on page 2, after a page one table that fills the page?
I've created my first page as a Table (entire page) in order to recreate the front page of my newsletter, as used by a previous editor. Works great, and has been the only way I've found to mimic the old front page. Problem is, I can't get the document to accept setting up a different header and footer for subsequent pages, and when I try to do so, I end up with a header on page 1 above my banner Headline. Yech.
I can't put a section break inside the Page 1 Table - Pages Won't allow (option is greyed out). I tried to put a layout break at the top of page 2, which is supposed to allow a new Header/Footer for subsequent pages, but when i insert the cursor on page 2 and attempt to create a distinct Header/Footer for the document after the layout break, there is a check mark, greyed out, in the Section part of the Layout Inspector, for the line: Use previous Headers and Footers. That is, it's locked and can't be unchecked.
If I do try to set up a header/footer field linked to the doc page after the layout break, it also creates the same layout and fields as for the first page.
Am I stuck here because I started out my doc with a table?

Welcome to the forums, OwlRemembers.
You should be OK with using the table as you are. The problem is probably arising because you aren't inserting the section break into the default text box on the page. This may be because the cursor is being inserted into the header, or that the table is covering the entire default text box, and so clicking in the main part of the page selects a table cell.
There are two things I would suggest. The first is to use the Layout View (under View menu, choose Show Layout) -- this will ensure that you can see the default text box (the big box that covers most of the page. The second would be to click on the table you have created and, in the Wrap Inspector palette, choose "Fixed on page". Once this is done, you should be able to grab the table, move is slightly aside, insert a section break on the page, and move the table back.

Duplex prints blank pages at section breaks in MS Word

Symptom: MS Word prints blanks on the backs of only some pages that should be auto-duplexed, resulting in even pages being printed on odd sides of paper sheets. Probability of problem is greater if one side is portrait and the other landscape.
Cause: MS Word creates a separate PostScript file for each section. (A section is delimited by a section break.) As each file arrives at the printer, the printer treats it as a new print job and so ejects the previous piece of paper before printing the first page of the next section. If the last page of a section is odd, then the first page of the next section can't print on the back of that piece of paper.
Microsoft told me it's the fault of the Mac OS. Anybody have insights? Has Apple even acknowledged this problem?

Next Page section break with different page orientations in the two sections (first section on odd page, next section on even page), is guaranteed to cause the problem.
But Next Page section break even with the same page orientation also causes the problem, though not 100% of the time. I've not figured out why on rare occasions it does not cause the problem. I've examined the usual suspects--anything requiring the second section to appear on an odd page.
Even a regular Page Break (not a section break) causes the problem at least most of the time, even though (by definition) there is no page orientation change.
This is a big problem for me, because I produce 300-page formally structured documents that really benefit from section breaks. I can't expect my readers to manually duplex.

Why do my page numbers keep disappearing?

I inherited a document with page numbers created in Word 10. I had to add a couple of pages to the document and had to change the page numbering which I did by adding section breaks and adding them in to the footer of the document. When

Page numbers are almost always in headers or footers.
Every section has coding for three headers and three footers, even if only one of each is displayed. The check boxes control which ones are displayed.
A single page can have multiple sections, each of which can have independent settings for the header and footer, only the settings for one of the sections are displayed, but those settings can control what happens in following sections if they are linked
to previous.
You are starting with a document created in Word 2010 by someone else. If it was converted from Word Perfect or a PDF file, it may have many many sections because some conversion software changes margins rather than indents for indented paragraphs. Every
time margins are changed for part of a document, a new section is created.
Another way to put it is "its complicated." It can be sorted, though.
Header/Footer Settings Recap
One other warning, if you use "Insert Page Number" you will replace
current header/footer content rather than supplementing it with a page number. You need to insert at current location while in the header or footer to avoid this.

Why do my previous calendar entries disappear on my iPhone 5? Sometimes I have to reference previous appointments. From January 2014 and before they are gone except for the repeat entries I have made.

Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Sync(in the Calendars section) and set this to All Events.

Need help understandin section breaks or page breaks

Hi there, was hoping I can gain a better undersrtanding of how to use section breaks and page breaks.
I have typed several reports while using apple pages. I click on the VIEW button on upper left corner and all the pages appear to run continously. I do not want that to continue to happen. How can I make each and every page its own page. I have done it once years ago and have observed a this fine line below each page under the view option so that I may move or rearragne pages. Can someone please help?

Pages 5.1 only lets you delete Sections, you can't drag them into place.
You can Menu > Insert > Section Break on the bottom of every page or
Setup > Document > uncheck Document Body which will delete all yout content in teh Document Body
or Better still use Pages '09 which should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.

Mail thru smtp line to breaks after @

Something strange came my way from the AS400 team. When they send an email thru SMTP to one of the CAS servers and or the CAS array the line to breaks after the @ end continues with < domainname.com> so in the program it is [email protected]
but in the header we find back first.lastname@ <domainname.com>
So of course we are getting a non delivery. Any idea if I need to look further in Exchange? There is an almost similar program used which is functioning normal. Also created scripts like Exchange health check is sending out mails normally...

And also ask them to run on the logging at their and to see if they are at least able to make an connectivity/attempt to your exchange and if so then why it is failing.

Now it is getting weird, The email is arriving at the mailbox of the person, it is just in the header that it is wrong.
So AS400 is sending true an API an email with attachement, in the to I see clearly in the messagetracking logs:
So arrival and leave MBX and CAS seems OK

Pages - page/section breaks don't work with heading 2, 3, etc

First of all, sorry for my english!
I don't know how to create page/section breaks in my epubs. The truth is that the breaks appear every time I use the "heading 1" (for example, in a book it could be "PART ONE", "PART TWO" and so on).
But when I use the "heading 2", the break dissapear, even if I put a page break or a section break.
Sometimes I have three headings and I would like to have breaks in all of them (for example: PART ONE / Book One / Chapter one), but it's impossible to do it and I don't understand why...

Thank you for explaining to me that I don't understand the problem. At least that makes two of us.
When there is an obvious bug in some software and that bug has been tracked down to an incompatibility between two programs (and at least I understand what is going on, as, I am sure, anyone else will who is familiar with recent FF developments), one (or both) of the two programs has to be modified. UPEK have modified their software and tested it. Toshiba have uploaded it but have failed to release it. That's all you need to understand. I posted the problem here in the niave hope that someone from Toshiba might be interested to know what problems their customers were having.
Model number and OS version are totally irrelevant, since the problem has been completely identified and a solution found. I am sure you know it all but a golden rule in forums is not to try to help people until you have understood what they have said.
Of course I appreciate that Tosh have to run some tests to satisfy themselves that this new version isn't going to break something else (but UPEK are puzzled). But the point is that something is seriously wrong with the current version and an update is needed now.
Frustrated? Yes! Actually, I am sick of the inefficient and intrusive bloat-ware on my Toshiba. I frequently have to reboot or wait aeons while the thing deals with a myriad of different start-up processes. I have a Tecra M5 and it is certainly not on my recommended list. Never have I been so underwhelmed by a new computer (owned since March 2006, BTW). The only good thing I have done of late is dual-booted Linux onto it.
If there is an email, let me know. As for telephone support -- get real!

All page breaks are converted into section breaks

Hi,
In my template in ms word 2007 I have page breaks and section breaks. When I generate the output what I see is that all the page breaks are automatically converted into section breaks. Is this a bug ? Or is there a way to solve it.?

Are your page breaks created by inserting multiple returns? If so, then the script will certainly remove them. You can "fix" this by deleting the relevant line from the text file. In general, however, it's better to control page breaks by other means.

No PDF created when section break used and no data in XML group

I have this issue that Tim Dexter documented on a few years back...

This is my exact issue. Yet the instructions do not solve my problem completely. I add another section break at the end of my RTF and it gets the page to show...but I get an extra page at the end of all the populated xmls

How do I get a section break/page break when the item is greyed out?

I've created an A4 document in word processing mode, with four identical A6 text boxes covering the entire page. Then I've created a second page with four more A6 text boxes so I can print a postcard on both sides of the card. Trouble is, Pages has made two extra text pages that I don't want, the first is linked to Pages 1 and 2, and the second is separate. I can't create a section break or page break because the command is greyed out, so I can't delete page 3. When I try and delete page 4, which is a stand alone page, it also deletes pages 2,3 and 4, leaving me with just page 1!
I don't have any problem with page breaks or section breaks in an ordinary A4 document with just one text box on a page, but I often want to create multiple text boxes and when I do I have always had this problem, ever since Pages was first introduced. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, please?

Thank you, Yvan, but I've tried that. Firstly, I unchecked the headers and footers tick box in the Inspector because I want the postcards to be exactly A6 size, that is, one quarter of A4. I've tried making the lower two text boxes slightly smaller (which I don't really want to do, because I want them A6 size) but I still can't get the insertion point to appear below the text box – it stays resolutely in the next page and won't go back up to the previous page. Any further ideas? Thank you.

How to change the header and footer in the Section Breaks Next Page using OpenXML?

I have a word document file in which I added a Section Break of Next Page, now I want to change the header and footer of that page.
Scenario of example, I have a doc file which has four pages with headers and footers and added fifth page in the section break next page, I want to change the header and footer of the fifth page only. This is achievable manually by deselecting the Link to Previous
button in the Word Application but I don't know how to change it using XML?
