Why do my open application "windows" occasionally jump/bump?

Hi all,
New to macs. Have had my imac for about 6 months and haven't had much time to explore it so it's only been used for internet/email most of the time. One thing that has continually happened is this problem of "bumping". I don't know if this is a standard thing when a notification or email arrives but could someone let me know if I can turn it off as I don't want it on?!
What happens is the window I have open (could be safari, chrome, email, word for mac etc) and any other windows appear to briefly "jump" or "bump" to the left or right and a sound like a new email notification usually closely follows I think. It only happens every now and again which is why it's taken me so long to have the opportunity and time to ask the question as I'm not on it that much!
It's not the mouse setting either. I've got the swipe turned off so it's not the left to right screen moving setting on that. I should add that I've also checked system preferences>accessibility>zoom and it all looks okay...?
I really am baffled as none of the googling I've done has encountered a similar question/solution but I'm wondering if it's my description of "bump" or "jump" that's not accurate.....?
Anyone?
Cheers

Hello & welcome!
I've never experienced it & not on 10.8 right now to look, but later I'll look if there's some Notifications setting that does this.

  • How to restrict "Open Applications" window from showing C drive? Or use the Windows Explorer "Open" Window?

Hi, Im new to JDeveloper and I work in a school which requires restriction of the C: Drive. Does any one know how I can either stop the "Open Applications" dialog from showing this drive or Use the Windows Explorer "Open" dialog window to browse files, the drive has been hidden and restricted using GPO but JDeveloper shows the C: drive?
    Any help is much appreciated.

Hi and thanks Timo. We are using 12c. On the Windows side of things, we are using Win7 and we have hidden the drives we don't want the user to see using GPO but obviously Jdev then shows these drives in its "Open Applications" Window and allows access. As far as the environmental variable is concerned this is something that I put in place.
Many thanks for your reply and the link to the tech doc.

  • Open application windows in the same place consistently

    Hello,
I am hoping to find out if anyone knows of a good way to convince application windows to open in the same location on the screen every time, consistently. This is, clearly, a minor problem, but perhaps you know how to do it. For example, I tend to use Safari with the window open over the entire screen, but every time I open a new window it locates itself with a couple mm between left side of the screen and left side of the Safari window, and the right side of the Safari window (the scroll bar) is partially off the screen (because the window is shifted). So every time I open a new Safari window I have to click the top bar and drag it a little bit to place it where I want it. Is there a way to "teach" Safari where I want it to open so that it will open in the same place every time? Maybe the problem is that I have a hidden dock on the left side of the screen and Safari does not want to come too close to the dock?
(I also have the same issue with Mail, because though I use that program with the application window only open over part of the total screen area it always opens in the same place on the screen which is always slightly off from where I want it to be)
    Any suggestions? Thanks!!
PS I apologize if this has been posted before; I tried several searches but the only results that came up were not at all related to my actual question.

I don’t think there is a way to teach Safari not to shift the window when a new one is created. And I don’t think it is related to the position of the Dock.
I leave a few cm of space on the right side of the Safari window and have the screen filled from top to bottom with the Safari window. Then when I make a new window, it opens shifted a little to the right of the previous window, but it doesn’t put the scroll bar off the screen and because the screen is filled from top to bottom, it doesn’t shift down, just right next to the previous window.
You might try using tabs. When you click a link that you want in a new window, hold the Command key down. It will open in a new tab in the same window and you can change between the window tabs by clicking on it on the top of the window. The X on the tab will close the tab.

  • Why does FF open two windows when I open it? Why can't I close the second window without closing FF altogether?

After FF automatically updated it started opening two windows whenever I start FF. One window has the open tabs from my previous session and the other window has only the FF home page open in one tab, nothing else. I can't close either window without shutting FF down altogether. I have limited RAM (3GB), running Mac Lion, which eats up a lot of resources and now FF eats up the rest. It's a real pain in the ass.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js [2] file and possible sessionstore-##.js [3] files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Why does firefox opens new window/tab when i click on a link

if I click any link in Firefox it will open another blank window in addition to the link clicked, blank window opens on top. how do I stop this

If a website codes its links to open in a new window, you can divert that to a new tab.
The basic setting for this is here:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Tabs
The first checkbox: "Open new windows in a new tab instead"
In some cases, a website uses a script to launch a new window with special features, such as a set height/width, or with one or more toolbars removed. To avoid breaking sites that create dialog boxes this way, Firefox does not normally divert this kind of window to a new tab. However, if you wanted to send these to a tab as well, there is a hidden setting you can change. (See: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1035103#answer-662627])
If Firefox is sending ALL links to new windows or new tabs, you might have an extension like Tab Mix Plus or Tab Utilities which changes the built-in tab handling features. You would need to explore their settings to get it just the way you want it.

  • Application windows occasionally disappear and cannot be made visible

Occasionally, all windows, including toolbars, sidebars, etc. will disappear in an application. The files remain open, and sometimes (but not all the time) the top menu will list the menu options for the affected application. Sometimes (but not always) I can access the menu items and select an option, but nothing ever visibly occurs. If I select "save," then whatever document is in the front-most missing window of the application will save (as long as there are no follow-up options). But it's troublesome if I'm not sure which document is in front. The only way to resolve the problem is to quit the application(often, force quit is the only option) and relaunch it.
This has been happening since 10.4 was first installed, and it also happens on my G4/667 Titanium Powerbook at home, so it's not isolated to my system. I have Application Enhancer with PullTab and WindowShade installed. Uninstalling these has no effect on the problem, however.
Sometimes it happens once in a week, sometimes it happens five times a day. It happens with any application, including the Finder.
    Any ideas?

On occasion, a program will not come to the front. I've found that happens when the program is hanging and needs to be killed. Force quit the sucker.
I don't know about Word 2008 but it's a new program and I'd look into any bugs associated with it. I still run Word 2004.
Does this happen when Word and Firefox are open at the same time?

  • Why is firefox opening new window instead of tabs?

Until today when I clicked on a link it would open a new tab. For some reason when I click on a link now it opens a new window. I'm not sure why. I check my options and it's set up to open tabs. Yesterday it was opening in tabs. I just don't know what's going on, hope you can help.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • How to quit all open applications/windows?

I have had Leopard since Halloween. How can I quit/close all open windows/applications in one fell swoop rather than go through the Dock and quit/close each one separately?
    ~Lorna
    http://web.mac.com/lorna6

An easier way might be to do an Option , Command, Escape ... and force quit all the apps.
At least you would know for sure what is open .... rather than relying on the semi invisible dock indicator ...
Probably faster too ... unless there is some issue about force quitting that I'm not aware of ...
You would want to quit all open apps on any software update, installation .. or when you're running something like Cocktail and cleaning your caches ....

    what should I do?

Enable the guest account in Windows 7 and see if itunes will open in that account.
This will tell us if it's a user-specific problem, or system-wide.
Then work through the steps here, depending on what you find in the guest account.

  • Why does finder open multiple windows in preview if I ask for several photos to view?

When I ask finder to open a list of photos in Preview it will open some of them in one window and some of them in another window. How do I fix this? It should open them all in one window.

I was trying to open the photos in Preview from Finder. I just tried it directly from Preview. It works correctly that way.

  • Why is Finder opening new windows every time I drag a photo onto the desktop?

I've been having a couple of issues with my desktop (I am running 10.7.5):
    1. When I save a photo by dragging it onto my desktop, it opens a new Finder window. It's only started doing this today, and I haven't changed any of my Preferences. How can I turn this function off?
    2. I used to be able to drag a photo from my web browser to my desktop to save it. When it saved, it would stay where it was dragged. However, about a month ago, the files began snapping into rows rather than where I dragged them as well as piling up in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. How can I fix this so that they stay whereever I drag them when saving?
    Thanks!

    It's a bug in Chrome.

  • Why does Firefox open new windows unnecessarily, sometimes opening them on top of existing windows? Is this a setting problem?

When I try to open a new tab in the existing window, Firefox either opens a new window or overwrites the content in a different, existing window...

  • Is there a way to view just one open Finder window (without any other Finder or other application windows coming into view) from a Desktop hot corner in Yosemite?

I just upgraded to Yosemite from Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro. Previously, I could view just one open Finder window by viewing the Desktop via a hot corner and then selecting Finder from the Dock. This would pull only the top Finder winder into view, without showing any other open Finder windows, and most importantly, any other open application windows. I could then easily drag files/folder from my Desktop into the Finder window (which I do A LOT). Since upgrading to Yosemite, whenever I use the Desktop hot corner and select Finder from the Dock, it pulls every open application and Finder window back into view, putting Finder in front.
Is there any way to view just one already open Finder window (or all Finder windows for that matter) without seeing all other open applications, without having to Hide the other applications or using Spaces?

Yes I've created an Automator Application that does the job, but the "watch me do" function that does the Mail Merge is a rather Clunkey work around, as the mouse moves all over the place, thats the part i want to remove and replace with a script, or work out a different way around it that avoids the "watch me do" function.
Is this Possible? or where/who is there i can ask to write me a script, im not a novice to scripting, but i am a novice to Applescript.
