Why do my PNG QT clips playback choppy?

I am working on a 3D animation using Blender as the 3D tool, and FC Studio as my editing tool. I render frame stacks from Blender, and Open Sequence with QuickTime Pro, then save those as clips to be used in Final Cut.
I have Blender render each frame as PNG, and thought I'd do a PNG workflow, so I exported from Quicktime as PNG, millions, 24fps. but when I play them back, they are hesitant, and choppy.
Previously, my workflow was the same, only Lightwave3D was my 3D app, and I saved my frames as PSD, imported to QT Pro, then Saved out as Planar RGB. Everything was smooth as could be, even on much less powerful hardware than I have now.
Can anyone say why the PNG clips play so unsmoothly? Is a PNG workflow not a good idea? I selected it because it's lossless, and makes small clips (file size)
my size is 852px x 480 px...certainly WELL within the capabilities of this Mac Pro.
Thanks for any clues!

852 (actually it should be 853 by Apple's calculations)x480 is square pixel 720x480. 720x480 is the same as 853x480 using the correct video pixel aspect ratio.
PNG is a stills codec, it's not a native codec used in video production. Check the FCP sequence presets and you'll a complete list of the native video formats FCP supports.
Alright..I think I'm getting close to epiphany here..thanks for hangin' in with me.
Just to be clear, my 3D out put is square pixels...this is a square pixel workflow from beginning to end. so if I keep everything 853 x 480, and use one of the FCP Presets, then I ought to get smooth playback, not only in FC Studio, but also in Quicktime Player?
Thanks!

  • Older mov clips playback choppy in Premiere CC 2014

Revisiting an old project (two years or so) and much of my footage is playing back choppy in Premiere.
It is some clips but not all. I played with sequence frame rates to see if there was a mis-match but nothing helped.
I'm noticing it happen in quicktime itself, could it be that the older clips ar not good anymore? Do they have a shelf life?
    Any workarounds or solutions?
    Thanks
Running Premiere CC 2014 on Windows 8.1 64 bit NVIDIA Geforce graphics card

    system:
    i7-3930K 3.20
    32GB RAM
    GTX 660
    Windows 8.1Pro
As I stated before I have NO playback issues in Premiere CC. 2014 is where all my problems are.

  • Some 24 fps clips playback choppy in project

I have two Sony HDR FX1000 camcorders, which I set for 24 fps.  My first tape plays reasonably well.  The other three seem to have problems, both in the source window and timeline.  My drives are defragged.  I'm running CS5 on my Sager i7 core laptop with 8 gig of RAM.
I am unfamiliar with the 24 fps style.  I've taped a wedding and thought it might be nice to include the feature.  Any constructive advice will be greatly appreciated!

Here's the rub - some of my clips play flawlessly on the timeline and in the source window.  CS5 doesn't give you the option to choose between frame rates - at least not that I've found, until you export.
There are two significant variables, it was cold, windy with showers.  I also used to camcorders.  I may have to perform some sample shots with both of them, to determine whether one has a problem...

  • Why can't i drag clips to timeline?

    I'm new.
Why can't i drag clips to timeline? I set in and out points but clips will not drag.

So it sounds like you're dragging from the source monitor and not from the project window. Either way, is it creating a new sequence for you when you drop it in over the blank timeline? If not what IS it doing? What version of pr are you using?

  • Why is Premiere outputting whole clip..?!?

Hi - fairly new so I apologise if this is a stupid question, though I have searched hard online before posting here.
I am reading a clip from a DVD of which I only want to export a short segment. I have created 'in points' and 'out points' in the program console, but despite this it's rendering *the entire clip* on export. It's driving me to drink (which admittedly is a short journey).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Definitely use the work area. There are shortcuts (ALT+ for the end)
Also use the work area to limit your render area when previewing clips on the timeline. You can render just the RED sections of the timeline, or render RED and YELLOW all within the range of the work area bar.
Setting in and out points in the sequence/timeline/program designates a spot for laying in footage from the program or source panels. Very useful for that, but not useful for setting your export or render sections.
Also, in the export dialog box, you have the option of using the work area or the entire sequence. It's set to work area by default, but just be aware that when/if you want to export the entire sequence, you'll either need to expand the work area on your timeline or select the entire sequence option from the dropdown box in the export dialog.

Why don't .png files display in Safari for iPhone, iPad?

    James,
Thanks for your response.  The image was on a site I maintain.  I have already replaced the image with a jpg, which works fine.  I believe I can duplicate the problem, if you think it is worth it.  Gimme a few...
http://www.oaksbible.org/Contents/about2.html is the page with the png I restored to use.
http://www.oaksbible.org/Contents/about.html is the page with the replacement jpg
Just checked.  The png still does not display on iPhone(5) or iPad(3).  The image was also made by me in pixelmator and both (png and jpg) were exprted from pixelmator.
    thanks again,
    Tim

  • Why do my EMPTY audio tracks playback ANOTHER audio track?

Why do my EMPTY audio tracks playback ANOTHER audio track?
Example: A vocal track (audio 2) being played through an empty guitar track (audio 1).
The vocal track is magically being played through the guitar track with distortion. WHAT possible feature is this good for and how do I get rid of this annoying problem? I looked at the reassign tracks menu and it doesn't say its connected or anything... I don't know if this has been addressed before on this site but I can't find the answer any where on Apple Discussion's website. Please help.
    Thanks

A key concept to understand is that Logic is more flexible when it comes to "tracks" than most other DAWs.
For instance, most DAW use a fixed "one arrange track is one audio channel" approach.
Logic doesn't. You can have many arrange tracks all assigned to the same audio mixer channel (although only one will sound at a time).
You probably have two arrange tracks assigned to the same audio object (key command "New arrange track with same object") rather than creating a new arrange track together with a new independent audio channel (key command "New arrange track with next object").
Try this. Hit the + button at the top of the track list, and create a new audio track. This creates a new arrange track and assigns it to the next available audio object.
Move your second region to this new track - does that work as you expect now?

  • Why is my png orange

Hi...I'm not sure why but a png that I imported the normal way is displaying in preview and publish view as an orange box?
Any suggestions on how to fix this and why it's happening?

Increase the slide quality on those slides to High Quality 24bit. Your issue is probably related to PNG transparency.

  • How do I reduce playback choppiness? And why did my magnetic timeline feature disappear? Clips no longer fall into place 'magnetically' fill in before/after another one like they used to.

I'm wondering why final cut pro x runs as slow as it does. Isn't it touted to be the best, fastest software out there? I'm running a 2011 model macbook pro 15", version 10.6.8 with the 2GHz intel core i7 and 4gb of ram. Anything I can do to make it buffer and just overall run faster? Clean out my hard drive maybe? And when I first got fcpx, the magnetic timeline feature worked as expected but now clips move freely wherever I drag them to, and if I try to put one clip between 2 different ones, it doesn't go in between magnetically but rather sits below the 2 clips and doesn't get played. I'm very confused. It's kinda nice to be able to put clips wherever I want and not in set locations due to the magnetic feature, but I also hate moving the entire lineup of clips just to squeeze an extra one in there, because (this is another weird issue i've been having) when I do that, the clips don't stay perfectly aligned like they were before I move them, they get all jumbled and such, i.e. some clips will move and be overlapped with other ones).
    thanks a bunch,
    Colin

You probably inadvertently switched from the "arrow" tool to the "position" tool .
Note the little button on the left above your timeline.
When the position tool is selected (just by pressing 'p'), whenever you drag items in the timeline they are positioned right where you drop them. The magnetic timeline is not "turned off". Indeed, a "gap" clip is automatically created to fill the, er..., gap. Notice the gap clip in the picture below:
Just press 'a' to select the arrow tool. And delete any gap clips that you don't want.
I agree that you can probably benefit from a number of tutorials that are available online. My favorite is at izzyvideo.com (it is free).

  • Why is quicktime screen recording playback choppy?

I'm trying to record gameplay on my computer screen with quicktime's screen record feature, but when I go back and watch it, it is really choppy and skips some parts.
    I have a 27 inch iMac (Late 2009)
3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB Memory
    Snow Leopard OS
I'm not sure if my computer is not powerful enough for such a task, or if quicktime 10.0 isn't capable of smoothly recording gameplay.
I've tried lowering graphic settings in the game and switching the recorder to medium quality, but no matter what the video is still choppy, distorted, and skips.
    Please help!

The main problem is that the CPU power is divided between both the rendering of what is displayed on the screen and simultaneously recording that screen redering. Further, the app is programmed with a more or less fixed recoding data rate dependent on the recording quality setting and screen area to be recorded. Basically, the "scratch" file captue data rate on my systems may vary from a low of about 20 Mbps to a high on the order of nearly 80 Mbps. Since the recoding data rate is more or less fixed for each recording session, the QT X screen capture routine varies the frame rate in response to the amount of CPU power that is available for recording. Thus, if you check the playback frame rates for your files, you will probably see relatively low fps which produce the "chopply" playback. You will probably also note that the lower quality recording setting produces a somewhat higher frame rate with slightly smoother playback than the HQ mode. That is because the Photo JPEG medium efficiency codec is less CPU intensive than the MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) high efficiency video codec which produces better video quality in a smaller file package.
The normal method for improving the smoothness of final playback is to decrease the area of your scratch recording which, in turn, tends to increase the frame rate of your scratch file providing a smoother playback potential. Some apps allow you to select and record a given area of the screen at its current resolution and/or record the display at a "scaled resolution" to reduce the surface area actually being recoded. Other apps only record the screen at its "native" resolution with or without the ability select a specific area of the screen for recording. Still others may allow you to record "objects" such as a gaming window which may or may not already be scaled by the user to selected fraction of the entire display area. In short, what you can do to increase the frame rate and smooth playback may vary drastically depending on the specific screen capture app use. QT X v10.2 allows recording of both a user selected area or a "scaled" display rendering to improve the frame rate but I rarely use it. I would normally use the moderately priced ScreenFlick app instead for simple projects or an app like Snaps Pro X or ScreenFlow for more complex screen capture projects.

  • Why do my imported clips playback really weird?

I imported all these clips from my camera and when I played them back they were all sped up but the audio was normal. I am new to final cut and I would really appreciate the help(:

This camera shoots 720p in two video formats, AVCHD Lite and MPEG, neither of which is supported by FCE. The MPEG material, if that's what you shot, can probably be converted using MPEG Streamclip. The AVCHD Lite format can be converted using Voltaic, but I understand it's pretty slow. You need to convert the media to QuickTime using the Apple Intermediate Codec at 1280x720 at 29.97fps with 48k uncompressed audio.

  • Quicktime playback, choppy.

    I have a Mac version 10.3.9.
I am using Quicktime version 7 pro.
I am having a problem with direct streaming, and even video playback when offline. It does not happen with every file, and I cannot figure out why I am having problems.
When I do have a problem, the playback is extremely choppy, and it stutters. Anyone here familiar with this problem, and know how to rectify it?
    You can email me @
    [email protected]

I am definitely noticing the same issue -- choppy /
    jerky playback.
Because I just upgraded to 7, it is certainly
possible that my codecs are not up to date. (Also,
my videos do tend to be large -- 640 by 472, for
    example.)
    Any hints on
    a) solving the jerkines problem
    b) how to discover what codecs are being used by QT
and how to upgrade them (other than visiting each
    site for upgrades).
First off, what CODEC was used for your clips?? (You've used MANY different programs to create the files - these programs can use CODECs (like DivX, for example) that QuickTime doesn't understand.) Open a clip in QuickTime Player and select Window>Show Movie Info
According to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/player/specs.html these are the supported formats Supported Video Formats:
    Animation
    Apple BMP
Apple Pixlet (Mac OS X v10.3 only)
    Apple Video
    Cinepak
    Component video
    DV and DVC Pro NTSC
    DV PAL
    DVC Pro PAL
    Graphics
    H.261
    H.263
    H.264
    JPEG 2000 (Mac OS X)
    Microsoft OLE (decode only)
    Microsoft Video 1 (decode only)
    Motion JPEG A
    Motion JPEG B
    MPEG-4 (Part 2)
    Photo JPEG
    Planar RGB
    PNG
    Sorenson Video 2
    Sorenson Video 3
    TGA
    TIFF
BTW, are you trying to play your clips from a hard drive or a CD? A video file of the size you mentioned ( 640 by 472 ) needs a data rate CD players can't supply to your computer.
