Why do my programs close when computer goes to sleep

why do my programs close when computer goes to sleep?

What do you mean by "close"? Your open applications stay open when you put your computer to sleep. However, if you have an app like iMovie open, for example, and you are exporting a video, than exporting will pause when your computer is asleep.

  • Looses network connection when computer goes to sleep... and password ques.

So... I browsed the forum (not too in depth...) and have found anything to help me on this issue.
When my computer goes to sleep I lose my connection. Even when I was testing it out and put it to sleep for five seconds it happened. So every time my computer goes to sleep I have to reconnect to my network and re-mount my external HD. Every time. And on top of that... when I type in my WAP password to connect... I check the option to save the password in my keychain and it never saves it. It saves the password to connect to the external HD, though... just not the network.
    Anyone have an idea?

The keychain is pretty much a central place that stores usernames, passwords, and some kinds of cryptography information (certificates and keys). OS X provides an interface so it's easy for programmers to make their applications use the keychain. That way, all of your passwords are stored in one place. Useful feature, that.
Keychain Access is used to access things in the keychain. So if you have a program that doesn't use keychain, you can use keychain access to display the password for various things you've long since forgotten.
Keychain access is also useful for double-checking that something is in the keychain - or for removing things that are already there that you don't want to have in the keychain.
As for two passwords for your network - that sounds correct. One is for the network, and the other is for the AirPort Base Station. Keychain Access has the "kind" column, and there are two kinds of entries:
AirPort Base Station Password: This is not used to access the network - it's used to configure the base station.
AirPort Network Password: This IS what you use to access the network.
Though your mention of "login" and "system" passwords is making me think you may be talking about the passwords for the "system" and "login" keychains.

  • Leopard 10.5.6 quits when computer goes to sleep

    Hello -
The moment my Macbook goes to sleep, the screen grays and I get a notice in several languages that OS X has quit. I force the computer to turn off by holding down the button. Then restart and - after being offered an opportunity to report the problem -- all is fine until the next sleep.
It coincided with software updating today. Not sure what all went on there.
    It's Leopard 10.5.6
    Thanks for any help.
    Josh

    CLARIFICATION OF THE ORIGINAL ISSUE:
The moment my computer goes towards sleep mode the multilingual message simply says the computer must be restarted. I get the OS X Quit message on restart, which may only refer to my force quit.
So... Removed the Ipod, pushed sleep, and had the same negative result. Tried it again after restart with the Ipod still disconnected with the identical negative result.
Still stuck. Any thoughts out there?
    Thanks.

  • MBP 13in drops wifi when computer goes to sleep, I have to restart the computer to reconnect. Help?

I recently did the Lion update on my MBP.  Since then my computer will drop wifi connection everytime the computer goes to sleep.  It will not let me log on network saying invailed password.  I have to restart the computer and then it connects automatically.  This is NOT a router problem. Skip any and all advice about routers.  I have 4 other Apple products all connected to wifi perfectly.  This is a MBP issue.  Please help.

On the MBP, go to /Library/Preferences/System Configuration
Move all the files in the System Configuration folder to the Trash.
    Restart the Mac.
It will not let me log on network saying invailed password
Just in case, open Keychain Access located in /Applications/Utilities
    Select Passwords on the left.
Use the search field top right corner of the window to locate your network keychain.
Now right or control click the keychain then click Get Info then select the Attributes tab.
    Click: Show password
    Make sure it's correct.
    And launch AirPort Utility  /Applications/Utilities
Select the connection on the left the click Manual Setup.
Select AirPort from the menu then select the Wireless tab.
Make sure the password is available there then click Update.

  • Windows gets rearranged in Windows 8.1 and secondary monitor when computer goes to sleep

I have a MacBook Air 2013 with a secondary monitor installed through a mini-display port-HDMI cable. I also have bootcamp installed in Windows 8.1 64 bits with all the latest drivers installed. The problem that I have is that when the computer wakes after it goes to sleep, all the windows in the non-primary monitor moves to the primary monitor and I have to re-arranged them all over every time.
    What I tried so far:
    1. Installed the latests drivers from Microsoft and Intel HD Graphics 5000.
    2. Look for the DMMEnableDDCPolling in the registry. (not found only available for ATI cards)
    3. Change the mini-displayport-HDMI cable for a new one that doesn't transmit the "power" so that computer do not detect that the monitor was shutdown.
    4. Change the resolution on boths monitors to native resolution
    5. Change the primary display from external monitor to laptop monitor
    6. Changer HKLM\Software\Microsoft\TMM\UseIViewHelper from 1 to 0
    7. Try to get an answer from Apple, Intel and microsoft support.

PLEASE HELP! I Don't know what else to do!
This do not happend on MacOS, is happends only in Windows.
    Thanks, Andres Rormoser.

The only solution that I found so far was to install Actual Window Manager, separate the secondary monitor in tiles, assign each window to each tile, add a shortcut to start/stop ActualWindowManager and every time the computer wakes up with the windows re-arranged I press the shoutcut and everything goes back to my predifined layout.

  • Program starts when computer wakes from sleep

I have recently found that when I wake my machine from sleep, my scanner program starts up (HP Scan Pro). I can't figure out why or when this started to happen. I have looked in the application preferences to see if some setting could be affecting this. But alas, I don't see anything.
    Any thoughts?

    What program launches?
There are many locations for startup items, kernel extensions etc.
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems/
    /Library/LaunchAgents
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents
.. or System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items
Some printers may act like cameras and launch the default program in Image Capture. To check for this:
Go to Image Capture, select your device on the left and there will be a default program option (don't remember exactly what it is labelled as).

  • Losing connection to wireless internet when computer goes to sleep

I have a Macbook, with OS 10.5.6. I connect to internet via airport connected to internet via belkin router. When I close my macbook to put it to sleep i keep losing the connection to the internet. The airport is connected, its only the internet connection that is lost.the only way round this is to restart the airport or belkin router, when the connection is restored. does anyone know a solution to this problem?

Similar symptoms here. Fortunately my MBP "recovers". When I made some experiments with VPNs yesterday, I noticed, when switching the network environment, that the computer is requesting a new IP address. Maybe this will also happen when the Mac wakes up? And maybe the router doesn't respond properly? I would try to set a fixed IP and see what happens then.

  • Losing network connection when computer goes to sleep

I have been putting up with a nagging problem that I hope someone can help solve. (I asked about this earlier and thought the problem had been solved, but it has not.)
Periodically when I start work after my notebook has been asleep, I am asked to reconnect to my wireless network. It doesn’t happen every time, and I have not been able to discover a pattern. I am also asked to re-enter my password, even though it is in my keychain and I always check the “remember this password” box. “Ask to join new networks" is not checked in the Advances pane, "Remember any network this computer has joined" is checked, and in the list of preferred networks, my home network is the top one.
I am not having any problem with the network itself and I am working on the desk where Time Capsule is located.
I am obviously doing something wrong, but what?
    Charles

Are you using TC as your router? Or do you have another router?
If another router, update the firmware for starters.

  • After recent update to airport on iMac, the wifi connection is lost when it goes to sleep and requires turning off wifi and turning it on to reestablish contact.

After recent update to OS on iMac, communication to airport is lost when computer goes to sleep.  To reestablish connection, I need to turn wifi off then on.

    same problem here.
    i have a time capsule.
    symptoms:
    excessively searching for network
but more often than not, it cant find the correct netowrk that is correctly stored in keychain
if i try network assistant opened through safari not finding its page, then it can find the right network after i enter in the password again.  it connects. but only for a few seconds then it loses the connection again.
the only fool proof workaround for me is:
1/ shut down time capsule. restart time capsule.
2/ restart mac with airport turned off.
3/ after restart manually select the network from the wireless icon in the menu bar
airport utility is a complete waste of time
old airport utility is still better.

  • HT3964 My MacBook Pro i5 Dual Core has a hardtime waking up when the computer is put to sleep and only when it goes to sleep and has been asleep for a while. The indicator light flashes on and off for a while and then freezes. I've done an SMC reset once.

Does any one have the same problem with their MacBook Pro i5 Intel Dual Core?  If the computer goes to sleep (not the screen) and is asleep for a while, when I try to wake it up it doesn't respond. I have to power it downn and restart it and sometimes it takes two or three attempts. Otherwise it works fine. I upgraded the memory to 8 GB. That is the only alteration doen to it. I've performed one SMC restart and now it wakes up  but it takes a while and a gray screen shows up. When I insert a DVD it won't start automatically I have to start the application in order to see it. Any suggestions?

  • Apple tv loses home sharing when my computer goes into sleep mode

Just recently, my Apple TV says that home sharing is off when my computer goes into sleep mode.  It never used to do that - any suggestions?

I have the same problem here. Always back-ed up with Time Machine (OSX 10.9 Mavericks) to Western Digital drives. MyBooks, MyPassport 1TB (USB 3.0), all works fine. Time Machine is actually doing back-ups overnight. Since I got this new 2TB MyPassport Ultra USB 3.0 it's working perfect during days, but every morning when I wake up the MacBook from sleep, I get this annoying error:
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “MyPassportUltra”.
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.
Latest successful backup: Today, 02:27 am
I'm also not able to write anything to that drive, or unmount it. It stil shows up in Finder, and I'm able to read all the data perfectly fine. When I do a Disk Utility Verify Disk directly after, I get this:
    Checking volume
    disk3s2: Scan for Volume Headers
    Invalid Volume Header @ 0: I/O error
    Invalid Volume Header @ 2000021315072: I/O error
disk3s2 is not a CoreStorage volume
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
I don't click Repair Disk, as this will probably screw up my partition. Instead, I have to unplug the USB cable (which is bad for the drive, there's no time to park the drive's heads) and plug it in again. After clicking Backup Now, Time Machine immediately starts backing up, and the drive works fine the rest of the day.
I contacted WD Support, and they are sending me a booster USB cable. As System Information reports, the drive receives enough power though:
    Current Available (mA):          900
    Current Required (mA):          224
Unfortunately there's no firmware update for this drive, which will probably fix this. See this topic: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4196704.

My MAC MINI looses the wi-fi connection to a Belkin N wireless router when it goes to sleep or shuts down.  I have to re select the network when re starting or waking up the computer.  I think this just started with LION.  My iPod and iPad have no problem remembering the wireless network.

Thank you BGreg.  That is what I have been doing, and then it works just fine.  I think it was doing the same thing in the previous version of Lion.  I may be incorrect about that.  I upgraded to 10.7.3 a few weeks ago, and then last week I reloaded the combo update, hoping it would help.  Not so.  Thank you for letting me know it is a common problem.  I have tried permissions in Disk Utilities, and in Macaroni, both at least 4 times, plus numerous restarts.  Nothing Improves.  It still can not find the internet when it wakes up or gets up.

    I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.
I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download.
Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.
The only way it will restart is to pull the mains lead out of the imac, put it back and try until it will start.
This only happened after reinstalling.  Only Apple OS was on the imac and so it must be an issue with the software I believe.....
Anyone know how to cure this problem please?
    Thanks

This isn't a fix, more a workaround I used when I had wake from sleep problems that lasted from some point in 10.6.x, through 10.7 and into 10.8 (got fixed for me in 10.8.2). It seems to be connected with Bluetooth failing to wake up properly:
System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.
