Why do my soft gradients look so bad?

I can't figure out why anytime i use a softgradient for a background the final rendered project looks terrible. While in Motion looking at the stage, the gradient is a smooth as can be and looks great, but as soon as i preview it on my ntsc monitor or export to FCP, it looks terrible: banding and bad color reproduction. I've tried multiple monitors all with the same results.
I've tried changing the project properties from 8 to 16 to 32bit but you can still see the banding. I see subtle/soft gradients like this on tv all the time, so i know that ntsc TV's can reproduce it. what am i doing wrong?

Hey Patrick--
tried the reduce banding filter (exactly what i was looking for) but it didn't help as much as i was hoping...even on it's max setting. You can still see the banding (not quite as bad) but now with some grit to it. So I added a directional blur to it also...that seems to help enough to make it production worthy.
Does everyone have to do this if they want a subtle gradient or does this have something to do with my project settings?

  • Why does my DV import look so bad in Imovie?

    I recently shot a short how to video with multiple cameras. I used a nikon DSLR and a Sony HDV camcorder. The files from the Nikon were shot in 720p and look crisp and clear in Imovie. The footage from HDV was shot in the DV format, I am aware that this will not match the quality of the Nikon but it looks really poor jagged and blury in Imovie yet looks clear in the cameras lcd screen. Why is this and how can i fix this problem? Should i just edit this project in Final Cut?

    Should i just edit this project in Final Cut?
    That's one way, but expensive.
    There is a reduction in quality of the image between iMovie 06 and iMovie 08 through 11.
    The difference is the single field processing used by iMovie 08-11 (for faster editing) and the fact that it throws out every other horizontal line.
    Final Cut Express and Adobe Premiere Elements 9 will give full quality but are more complicated to use.
    In my opinion, iMovie 06 with iDVD 08 -11 is the way to go.

    Any way around this or is this something apple needs to fix?

    OK, videos!
    What kind of videos?
    Have you tried using Quicktime Player 7?
    Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923
    Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
    Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".

  • Why do the photos in my first InDesign project  look really bad?

    Why do the photos in my first InDesign project look really bad? Noticed as I "placed" them, some PDFs or JPEGs (not photos, but PDFs converted to JPEG) looked pretty distorted. Went ahead with the 60+ page project, converted to PDF, sent to client. He converted to a flipbook to proof and really didn't like the photos. Here's the irony. Upgraded to InDesign for this client. Was using Publisher as a standby until I could afford InDesign. Signed up with the Creative Cloud because job was overwhelming Publisher.
    I started the job without a whole lot of knowledge (or patience for the tutorials) and figured I just wing it (and get InDesign for Dummies). Am thinking somethingw as screwed up in the initial setting up of the job. So how do I figure out if this is the issue and can I fix it without redoing all 60+ pages. If anybody has an answer, please let me know.

    Ok, first image on your indesign page or any other program for that matter are still images, they are no longer pdf's, jpg's, psd's, etc. Once they load into a program, the file format is no longer relevant until you save again. Onl;y on your drive is the format relavent.
    Second, if you can help it, never use jpg's until you are completely done and will be sharing a jpg. Jpg's are a lossy format are are not the best for preserving quality on your drive. Each time you open a jpg, and save a jpg more data is lost, as that is how that format compresses the data, by throwing it way for ever.
    Third, the problem may not even be with you, it could happen when that person created a flipbook. That is an unknown varible, one which could make you look bad when it had nothing to do with you.
    Fourth, Pay attention to the pixel dimentions of your images, the higher those values are the better the quality. Scaling can and probably will reduce that quality. If you can, it is better to hide parts of the image by cropping with a frame than it is to scale the image. you can scale, but pay attention to it.
    I will stop there for now, as some of what I wrote is based on assumtions. That normally does not work out too well.

  • Why does my gradient look terrible in Flash?

    I'm trying to recreate a nav bar mock up in Flash that I
    mocked in Photoshop. The background of my nav bar in Photoshop has
    a nice smooth gradient going from black to red to black, but when I
    pull out a rectangle in Flash and add a gradient to it, the
    gradient looks very choppy and doesn't have a smooth transition
    from one color level to the next. Is it just that Flash doesn't
    make as good of gradients as Photoshop or is there some kind of
    quality setting that I have to bump up in Flash? Thanks.

    what is the display settings for your monitor? sounds like
    you have it set to 16 bit color.

  • Photos look different (bad) when placed in InDesign CS4

    I'm having a problem in that my photos look bad when viewed in InDesign. I labor on my photos until they're looking perfect in Photoshop -- with just the right color balance and tonalities -- but when I place them in ID, they look much darker and redder, or oversaturated. Then I look at them again in Photoshop, and they look fine. What gives? Which program is showing the real state of the photo? Btw, the photos are using the same color profile in both programs and the monitor is unchanged b/w viewings.
    I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and what I can do about this? It makes me very nervous to see my photos looking so bad in InDesign, where I prepare my layouts for offset printing. Will they print as I see them in Photoshop or will they print as I see them in InDesign (which would be dreadful)? At this point I'm hesitant to make further adjustments and hoping it's the Photoshop view that's correct.
    But why is this happening in the first place? Is there some setting I should be fixing? Or is there a color issue or incompatiblity b/w Photoshop and InDesign that I'm unaware of?
    I'm using ID and Photoshop CS4 on Mac OSX 10.4.11
    Hope someone out there can help me with this issue.
    Thanks in advance!
    Scarlett

    There's a discrepancy in the way Photoshop and ID display images on the screen. I wasn't aware of this before.
    If your display performance is set at High Quality there's no significant difference in the way color is displayed between PS and ID. The screen capture linked below shows a CMYK file with no profile assigned, side by side in ID and PS. The ID file has no profile assigned and the CMYK Working Spaces are the same for both programs:
    http://www.zenodesign.com/scripts/IDPS.png
    You can check the RGB values of the screen capture in Photoshop and there is virtually no difference—I could only find an occasional 1 gray level in 1 channel shift.
    If you are seeing a color change with a High Quality display setting then chances are you have a color management issue.
    Syncing your Color Settings doesn't guarantee matching color between the programs because you are just syncing the program's Working Spaces, and they don't necessarily color manage the documents (assigned profiles override the Working Space). If you are assigning profiles in PS, the assigned profiles need to match your ID doc's assigned profile (which could be different then the ID Working Space)

  • Why is the Hulu Plus interface so bad?

    Why is the Hulu Plus interface so bad? The Hulu Plus interface that is presented on my Sony Blue Ray player (BDPS1500) is very difficult to access my Queue to play the shows I always watch. When you access Hulu Plus it should immediately display “Your Queue” as the highlighted default selection – that way I can click the SELECT button once and then see the list of programs in my queue with the most recent program that I watched highlighted – so I can then click SELECT a 2nd time and now I am looking at the episodes of the program series I watched last with the next episode highlighted so if I press SELECT a 3rd time I will be watching the next episode in the series. The way it is now I have to click all over the place trying to locate My Queue – as it is NOT visible when Hulu Plus initializes. And when I do finally find my queue and select it, the last program I watched is not the default highlighted item. After probably 15 or more clicks up, down, left, and right I finally get to the next episode. This should be an easy change and one that would greatly improve the user experience.

    The trick is to go do this:
    1) go to http://www.adobe.com
    2) At the top in the menu bar look for: Products (this is the first item in the Menu bar;
    3) When you click on it, you will get a list of "Top Destination"
    4) In this list, Photoshop is listed as a special item because of its popularity;
    5) Click on it and you will get this:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopfamily.html?promoid=JOLIW
    Hope this helps.

  • After compressor, video looks very bad

    I exported my Final Cut Pro timeline using Compressor,
    because I want to convert to mpeg2 to burn to DVD.
    After it is exported and in compressor, I choose the
    Apple setting for DVD Best Performance 90 min 4:3.
    The total time of my timeline is about five minutes.
    After it is converted, I play it back in the Simulator and it looks really bad, grainy, blurry, like a poor quality vhs video.
    I don't know why this is.
    Can someone help please.
    thanks.

    thanks for the reply.
    I am judging my video by playing it back in the Viewer, when I add it to a track. I haven't burned the DVD yet.
    Here's what I'm doing:
    Export from FCP to Compressor (this is a single 5 min QT movie file, that I captured straight from my DV cam to FCP)
    my presents in Compressor are: 1 pass CRB,
    mpeg2 elementary, NTSC CCIR 601/DV, 29.97, frame controls: automatic, 4:3, Average data rate: 4.5, bottom first.
    HOWEVER, I have also followed the same steps on another 5 min FCP project, this one consists of
    multiple clips from several different sources, with effects, filters, much more complicated, and it looks great ... with the same settings as above.
    Don't know what is the problem with the 5 min QT movie.
    After compressor, it looks like bad vhs video.
    Any ideas?

    At first I was not sure what you were asking. After looking more closely, I think I can answer your question.
    First of all, you need to initialize your shift register. This is the array of Boolean results. The first time through it works OK, but subsequent runs are also added on instead of replacing the results, even though you used a local to "clear" the array first.
    You are adding 2 to the iterations and indexing on the new number. This is a so that you skip the first two "bad" values. Therefore, you only have 13 data points and should only be running the FOR loop 13 times. Change the FOR loop count constant to 13 (or get the array size and subtract 2 and wire it in if the number of tests is variable).
    Also, there is an 'In Range a
    nd Coerce' node that will perform the two tests and the AND all in one node. This was not an error, of course, but it does make it a bit easier to read.

    Why does my RAW image look grainy when I export it in to Photoshop CC from Lightroom for editing?
    Checked LR's setting for Ps export and they haven't changed since it was OK a few days ago? It is OK if you zoom in but in 'fit page' it looks terrible!

  • Flex mobile: actionbar chrome always has a gradient look

    Hi,
    I have a mobile app based on ViewNavigatorApplication. I want the action bar to have a single flattened color.
    I have following declaration in the app main mxml file
    s|ActionBar
         chromeColor: #000000;
    In spite of this, the app’s action bar always has a gradient look. Am I missing anything here ?
    also, i tried setting the following values too
    backgroundAlpha: 0;
    contentBackgroundAlpha: 0;
    accentColor: #000000;
    but didnt get the required results.
    Thanks,

    The gradient is created by the skin based on the chrome color.  You will need to create a custom skin to not draw a gradient.
    Here is an example custom skin that extends ActionBarSkin to accomplish this.
    SolidActionBarSkin.as:
    package
        import mx.core.DPIClassification;
        import spark.skins.mobile.ActionBarSkin;
        public class SolidActionBarSkin extends ActionBarSkin
            override protected function drawBackground(unscaledWidth:Number, unscaledHeight:Number):void
                var chromeColor:uint = getStyle("chromeColor");
                var backgroundAlphaValue:Number = getStyle("backgroundAlpha");
                // border size is twice as big on 320
                var borderSize:int = 1;
                if (applicationDPI == DPIClassification.DPI_320)
                    borderSize = 2;
                graphics.beginFill(chromeColor, backgroundAlphaValue);
                graphics.drawRect(0, borderSize, unscaledWidth, unscaledHeight - (borderSize * 2));
                graphics.endFill();
    And the CSS to use it in your application:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <s:ViewNavigatorApplication xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
                                xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
                                firstView="views.ReproMHomeView">
        <fx:Style>
            @namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
            s|ActionBar {
                skinClass: ClassReference("SolidActionBarSkin");
        </fx:Style>
    </s:ViewNavigatorApplication>

  • I do not understand why LR would not auto look at my primary...

    Why would LR not auto look at my primary folder and not update it's DB with any new folders I might have created outside of LR?
    This makes my work flow far more difficult.
    In this respect "Bridge" does a far better job.
    Is there logic/reason for this?

    Bridge doesn't use a database or need importing. Nor can Bridge let you view or edit metadata for offline images. The logic is simple. You must import into a database.
    In order to do what you want you have 2 options, 1) Have Lightroom constantly waste cpu cycles looking at the drive (and I do mean constantly) or 2) Set up a way of having Lightroom import all new folders when you click (probably right click) on the folder.
    Mark Hamburg has already mooted the first because it would really slow Lightroom down. The second seems like a viable option to me.

  • Screen looks really bad

    Hi,
    no Idea what I did wrong but since june my screen ( samsung 913n) looks really bad a bootup. First it is fine but just when the desktop is loaded it looks like if it only has 3-4 collors left. I can 'fix' it by taking out the cable and plug it in the other port of the video card. If I create another account I have no issues. Can someone tell me where to fix this account related software issue ?
    Tried all updates & several cache cleaning programs.
    Getting tired of changing the port all the time.\
