Why do our applications crash?
We have a newspaper to publish.
multiple Macs, couple of Windows XP boxes: Editorial staff use Mirrored Drive Door G4s. Designers use G5 iMacs and Prepress is done on a Dual 2.5 G5.
All run 10.3.9.
An XServe running OS 10 Server 10.3.9 carries a Foxbase application as well as SQL app for managing sales/ad booking, publishing workflow and circulation.
An XServe running 10.4 is running as an everyday file server for graphics and page layout files, as well as backups of work folders, templates, etc.
Lately (3-4 months) many apps, but especially QuarkXPress and Adobe Acrobat have been crashing a lot -- immediately upon launch and at other times as well. Different workstations will have more trouble than others at times.
Because we use Quark and Acrobat the most, they could only seem to have the most problem -- again, there are crashes with other apps, but we don't see those as much.
Basically, the only thing changed in the last six to eight months has been security updates to OS 10. Could that introduce a problem in something all apps try to access?
No techies here. We're designers, writers and salespeople, and one prepress geek trying to keep things running.
Any suggestions?
Thanx.
Hi Cliff,
re: "Basically, the only thing changed in the last six to eight months has been security updates to OS 10. Could that introduce a problem in something all apps try to access?"
When updating Security Updates to the machines was Repair Permissions run using Disk Utility on these machines?
Security updates in particular seem to wreak havoc on 10.3 unless Repair Permissions is run before and after the updates.
I definitely would suggest trying to Repair Permissions on the machines and see if you notice any changes. Look for repairs that may alert you to some problem other than spurious repairs that are normal for 10.3 that are listed here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607267
Sorry, I can't suggest more but wanted to let you know that that can be a problem.....
good luck,

Why Do My Applications Crash After Updating 10.8.5?
I was notified of an OS X available update to 10.8.5 [12F37] (from 10.8.4 [12E55]) yesterday evening [September 17th, 2013] and per my SOP I initiated the update. My iMac restarted and allowed the Mac App Store to do its thing... The computer restarted... Everything was fine until I tried to open an application. The app crashed with a report 1-2 seconds after my clicking the dock icon. Ok, So I tried it again just to be sure... It crashed. I tried a variety of different applications on my machine, some crashed out-right, a few opened "normally", while Safari would open and begin loading a page, yet never finish. Safari just sits... halfway loaded progress bar and a blank screen. I have noticed a process called "kernel_task" that is sending and recieving millions more messages than any other process while my iMac is running. This seems like a prime suspect for the problem, but I can get no additional information about just what exactly this process is or what it is doing (this is obviously over my head). I would try to force quit the process to see if that helps at all, but Activity Monitor will not allow me to do so... I'm guessing it's an integral part of the operating system [PID 0, whatever that may be] that might be running amuck.
I have seen several posts on the forums regarding similar issues, but every post I've seen pre-dates this particular update by a good margin and almost every one has not been resolved. I have investigated the options provided in the small handfull of posts that wore the green bubble-badge of resolution with no success.
I am ready to restore my system from an earlier backup just so I can continue to work on some very important, active projects, but that will not correct this problem as with every update that Apple releases, I am compelled to trust them and complete the update on my system to keep it up-to-date.
Has anyone else out there had this current issue? Has any gurus out there have any additional trouble shooting techniques that I could be guided by to help track down this "bug"?Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Application crashes when calling DLL built with LabVIEW 2011
Hello everybody,
Our application calls DLLs built with LabVIEW 2010 SP1. We installed LabVIEW 2011 and built some DLLs. So far so good. If we start our application and run 2010 DLLs it still works fine. If we run a 2011 DLL just once no error happens, but if we try to run the same 2011 DLL our application crashes reporting the error below. I saved the code for 2010 version and built a DLL and it works fine. Does anyone know why?
Thank you in advance.

error.PNG 11 KBOn that note, you should be able to create DLLs in 2010 and run them with 2011, correct?? In my case, I have a 2010 built DLL (talking to sbRIO), most of the functions work when run in 2011, but a couple of them lock up LabVIEW on the desktop (but not the sbRIO), no lock ups happen with 2010 on the desktop.

How to handle browser or application crash out of our application in java.
I am running my application(testing automation tool) through ANT . when i run the same over the remote the browser is getting crashed. so if i need to handle it , i should handle outside my application. my application is written only in pure core java. Plz provide me the solution for handling browser crashes outside our application. so that when i run my application over the remote the browser should not crash.... if i use javascript to handle , how do i communicate java script code with pure core java code......
this is not directly a security related question, but jars within jars won't be found by the JRE; they won't appear in the classpath.

Our computer crashed that we mainly used iTunes on for upgrades, new purchases, etc. We've downloaded iTunes onto my laptop but none of my apps are in the library. We've made this laptop an authorized computer, but it's still not working. Why is this?

This morning a lot of user send me feedback and crashlogs after updating to QuickTime 7.0.4.
i hope that Apple will release a bugfix, so that we ( the developers ) will not have to rewrite our applications. I don't know why Apple has disabled this, i think they have huge problems with the second Core from there new Intel DualCore machines.

iMac G5 20' iSight Mac OS X (10.4.4)Earlier this week, I posted a complaint against Quicktime 7.0.4 causing really bad jerkiness in video playback and in Front Row animated menus. I had the Windows Media Plugin "Flip4Mac installed". I just noticed that Flip4Mac has posted a new version of their plugin yesturday to correct incompatibilities with Quicktime 7.0.4. After experiencing instbility with Quicktime 7.0.4, I uninstalled using the Apple uninstaller to revert back to 7.0.1, I then upgraded to 7.0.3 and all my issues were gone. Once I saw that Flip4Mac had posted a new version of it's plugin to correct incompatibilities, I was curious if this plugin was causing my issue so I re-installed Quicktime 7.0.4 and sure enough, my video playback became unstable again. I then went to macupdate.com and downloaded the newly released Flip4mac plugin for Quicktime. Sure enough, video playback was good again. I think the whole cause of the bad video issue after installing Quicktime 7.0.4 was due to the older version of Flip4Mac being installed. Just thought this might help some of you and also the Apple developers.

Why even unchecked my crash reports are sent? I have to manually edit the 'application.ini' file at every updates! This is unacceptable for the user's choice!
Check the SubmitCrashReport (DWORD) key in the registry and set the value to 0.

Could someone please help, it is rather annoying…
Thanks.Well, this is the second of third time Safari has crashed like this, for no apparent reason. One crash I did try to open three tabs and then load three separate sites at the same time, but I do not see why that would make a large difference.
Photoshop CS3 has crashed (within the last few days) each time I have tried to quit it. DVD player has crashed one, and so has system preferences. Firefox has currently appeared to be fine.
Within the last week I have updated to 10.6, and then updated to 10.6.3. I have changed an Airport Express with a Time Capsule, made two new accounts on the iMac, and also lost the ability to use my scanner in photoshop. -
All my applications crash, when I try to back up, or reinstall apps, they still crash. Carbon Copy Cloner crashes and all these other apps crash PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!
Do you have a good copy of an earlier CCC backup? always good to have more than one so you don't corrupt your good backup set.

Hi, our application is web server plugin loaded on OHS server. We are logging some messages to stderr stream. OHS redirects stderr stream to error_log file.
but when our application tries to write messages ove rit, it is getting crash at fprintf() function. I have verified all parameter of this function that are correct.
Same issue is not reproducable with Apache 1.3, Apache 2.0 & OHS 2 based on Apache 2.0.
Issue is only reproducable only with OHS 10.1.3.1.0 soa version based on Apache 1.3.
Can someone faced this kind of issue.
Any pointers in this regards are highly appricitable.
Thanks,
AnkitHi All,
In continue this issue, i am observed that if we use fputs() to stderr thne crash does not occur. crash only occur with fprintf() function and stderr stream. if i change stderr to stdout then same fpritnf() also works.
I am very much puzzling why am getting strange results with fprintf(() & stderr.
Please suggest me to debug this issue. -
Application crashes when using JNI with Jdk 1,2, 1.3 and 1.4
Hi!
I have this application that has a GUI written in Java and a file parser written in C. JNI is used to connect these parts together. The problem is that the application only works when I am using jdk 1.1.8 but not when using jdk1.2, jdk1.3 or jdk1.4. I am running the application on a Solaris 8 machine.
I have not written the application myself but I am going to be working with it from now on. But I have today little knowledge with JNI and I have tried different approaches to solve the problem. For example I have tried to used DDD together with GDB to find out what the problem is but with no luck. When I run the application using jdk1.4 I get the following error when the JVM crashes:
An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.

From this information I think that the problem should be in the native method setDebug. But I have tried to set a breakpoint at the beginning of that function in the C part but with no luck. The application crashes before it reaches that position in the C file.
What could possibly go wrong between the setDebug function in the C part and the function call in the Java part?
When using GDB, GDB cannot figure out what is wrong it just returns a hex address, no function name.
I would really appreciate some help. I have tried everything that I can come up with!
Best regards
LarsI have figured out that the application fails on its first call to the native methods.
So I have this Bitmap class that contains all the native calls and it is defined shortly as follow:
public class Bitmap {
static {
System.loadLibrary("BitmapImpl");
native void setDebug(int debuglevel, int statistics);
There are many more native methods defined in Bitmap, but I only show the setDebug method because that is the first one that is executed and also the one that immediately fails.
My setDebug C function is defined as follow in BitmapImpl.c
#include <time.h>
#include <stdio.h>
#include <limits.h>
#include <fcntl.h>
#include <jni.h>
#include <math.h>
#include <errno.h>
#include "Bitmap.h"
#include "data.h"
jint debug = 0;
jint statistics = 1;
JNIEXPORT void JNICALL Java_Bitmap_setDebug
(JNIEnv *jenv, jobject jo, jint d, jint s)
debug = d;
statistics = s;
My libBitmapImpl.so file is compiled using the following Makefile and using GNU gcc:
JAVAPATH=$(JAVAINCLUDEPATH)
LMACRO=-D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -DSOLARIS
CSOURCE=BitmapImpl.c
all:
gcc -O3 -G $(LMACRO) -I$(JAVAPATH) -I$(JAVAPATH)/solaris \
$(CSOURCE) -o libBitmapImpl.so
It is still a total mystory why the application fails. I have tried it on a RedHat Linux machine and there it works fine. But not on Solaris. Only if I use the jdk1.1.8 but not a later one.
Would really appreiciate some help!
Best regards

Powerbuilder application crashes after upgrade to 12.5.2 (build 5006)
I have already seen few similar posts on this forum for similar issue. However, I feel mine is different from those and could be some basic steps am missing. Thanks in advance for any comments.
We are evaluating the effort and benefits of migrating our PB 10.2.1 (build 9731) application to PB 12.5 Classic. After downloading the trial version from the SAP site, I could migrate the application easily with only a handful of warnings. However, while running the application either from build (EXE) or from IDE, it crashes (windows application failure) frequently. In addition to that, few of our application screens opens as blank screen (doesn’t display anything in the DW attached).
My operating system is Windows 7 (32 bit) Service Pack 1. The application has many calls external DLLs (both windows standard and custom), as samples at the bottom. I believe that the correct (from PB 12.5) DLLs are copied to Powerbuilder home directory (C:\Software\Sybase\PowerBuilder 12.5 & C:\Software\Sybase\Shared\PowerBuilder) and the source code directory in my attempt to ensure that there are no issues with DLLs. However, initially I had installed powerbuilder 12.5 also under the same root as Power builder 10.0, but as I read few posts that DLLs from different version residing in same place can cause issues, uninstalled and installed PB 12.5 on different location.
Our PB application also interact with the .Net modules of the application by communicating through a custom DLL. However, that seems still working and I am able to open the .Net screens from the migrated application.
Below are the main scenarios in which the application crashes and every time I get a DLL error as given below.
1. While running the application from IDE and selecting ‘Exit’ from the main window. This will close any instantiated objects and close the mutex by calling the windows API.
function ulong CreateMutexA(ulong lpMutexAttributes, boolean bInitialOwner, ref string lpName) library "kernel32.dll" alias for "CreateMutexW" function ulong GetLastError() library "kernel32.dll" alias for "GetLastError;Ansi"
function ulong CloseHandle(ulong hMutex) library "kernel32.dll" alias for "CloseHandle;Ansi"
This will result in the below crash.
Faulting application name: PB125.EXE, version: 12.5.2.5006, time stamp: 0x50f93412

Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\kernel32.dll
Report Id: 8feef8fc-aa65-11e3-8049-f500274aecdc
2. Opening of certain windows results in the below crash. If I try to debug the code and move mouse over the line of code being executed, then also I get the same crash. I don’t do the mouse move then I can proceed with the same line, however it will crash at a later line calling ‘classname’.

3. Few of the application screen opens but doesn’t display the datawindow attached to it.... many calls external DLLs (both windows standard and custom),
You have a very complex application and it is unlikely that you will receive much help in this type of setting. As Chris has already pointed out, previous efforts appear to have been done in a sloppy manner; something indicated by the ANSI qualifiers on API functions that are not needed or relevant. In addition, the PB alias of CreateMutexA for the API function CreateMutexW is also suggestive.
I believe that the correct (from PB 12.5) DLLs are copied to Powerbuilder home directory (C:\Software\Sybase\PowerBuilder 12.5 & C:\Software\Sybase\Shared\PowerBuilder)
You should be very very careful about doing things like this. One should not simply scatter DLLs across directories without very good reasons as it often leads to strange problems. On a machine with the IDE installed, you should allow PB to install everything where it wants them. Copying or moving files is something done as a last resort - it is certainly something that you need to document in case you need to undo it or redo it at a later time.
Lastly, you might reconsider attempting this with the trial version. I don't how "current" the trial version is but I suspect it might be a bit buggier than the most current maintenance build. I'm guessing that you will have to do a bit more than recompiling to get the functionality related to "opening .Net screens" working. It might help to try creating a new application and put in some basic functionality to interact with all of these external processes, screens, dlls, etc since I suspect this is where the bulk of your problems exist.
