Why Do Preview Sidebars Now Only Open In Table of Contents View?

All of a sudden Preview's PDF Sidebars, which always used to open in “Thumbnails” view (which I prefer), only open in “Table of Contents View” (which I hate) when I open any PDF. How can I get Preview to always use the “Thumbnails” view like before without having to select it every time I open a document? There doesn't seem to be a way to set this in Preferences.

Maybe the LaunchServices plist is messed up. You might try this:
To reset all of your files to open with the original default application, you need to delete a certain file. Go to your user folder, and navigate into the Library folder then into the Preferences folder. Find the com.apple.LaunchServices.plist file, and drag it to the Trash. Alternatively, drag it to the Desktop if you think you might change your mind and want to put it back later.
Over time, you may find that the Open With menu gets cluttered with duplicates, older versions or applications you thought you deleted long ago. To get rid of these, you need to use Terminal. Open up Terminal (from Applications/Utilities) and paste the following line:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Press return and your Open With menu should have been cleaned up to only include the most current applications.

Preview app will only open 20 images

Hi.
For me, the Preview app will only open 20 separate images at once. When I open the 21st image, it opens in the 'drawer' of the 20th image, as do subsequent images I open.
This is not the behaviour I want. I want to be able to open any number of images and have them exist within their own window. Preview in 10.1 I believe allowed this!
I am running 10.4.10 with Preview 3.0.9 (409).
Any and all help appreciated!!

I was able to duplicate your problem. I messed with different sized pictures thinking it might be a memory problem, it was not. Also tried different preference settings, no luck. My conclusion is that 20 pictures is a limit imposed by the programers.

Why is my book rejected because of the table of contents?
I have submitted a chidlren's book, so there are not multiple chapters. There is only one "chapter" which is teh entire 40-page book.
IBook Author automatically creates a table of contents, which just has one chapter.
When I click on the chapter, it does not go to the next page. So once someone downloads the book from ibook, they are stuck on the table of contents page.
That seems to be a big reason for why it is getting rejected, although the actual text is cryptic:
6.1.4. Incomplete/Inaccurate Functional Table of Contents
The EPUB's spine in the NCX is used to create the table of contents in iBooks and provides a direct navigational link to the appropriate sections of the book. Since it is a key element to the customer's interaction with a book, all EPUB spines must contain a complete listing of all chapters or book sections.

If you know what makes it not work....fix it.
The text is simply picked out from the nearest applicable cause.

All my desktop files will now only open in the photoshop elements edit page. How can this be corrected?

As stated in my question I tried to open a manual I have on my desktop and it opened it Photoshop Elements edit page in a thumb nail format. I checked and all my desktop items will only open in the photoshop elements edit page. what do I need to do to correct this?

Now that we have your post in the correct forum, I have a few questions, please:
What is the file format of this "manual?"
What OS version are you running?
If this is Windows (a PC), then what is that file format associated with in File Types? It is likely that the particular format has been associated with PsE. If that is not what you want, the association can be changed from the Control Panel, to link it to the desired program.

Opening pdf files in preview,mine will only open in colorsync utility. help

My macbook operating on Mac os 10.5.6 when opening pdf files it will only open them with colorsync utility and I can't alter the files (rotate/zoom etc) like I can when I can open it with Preview on my iMac desktop... I don't seem to have preview on my macbook. Is there anywhere I can download it from or somehow transfer it from my iMac to my macbook?? Maybe I just can't find it properly?? Help!

do a spotlight search for Preview. can you find it? it should be in the main Applications folder at the top level of the hard drive. if you can't find it you can reinstall it from the leopard install DVD using Pacifist

Why does Preview app .fail to open ?

When trying to open up an image using preview, I keep getting a message ' The application "Preview app" is not open any more '.Consequently any image I try to open fails- The only way I have found to temporarily restore the application is to shut down & restart the computer ( not very efficient !!) but the problem reoccurs.
I have reset the PRAM and also reinstalled my OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite to try to get over this but to no avail..
Any suggestions would be most welcome

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to launch Preview. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

Why is my iPod now only half full (when previously it was full)?

I recently suffered a failure of the hard disc on my Mac; the disc was replaced and the machine restored to its factory condition from my original DVD discs.
My iTunes music is kept on an external hard disc and so wasn't affected. I therefore replaced the iTunes library file to my hard disc, from a backup, and all should have been well.
I did have a probem that iTunes failed to find some of my music. but I've now resolved this, with the help of another user on here.
My problem is that my iPod, previously virutally full, is now only about half full - but as far as I can tell, there are no tracks missing!
Could it be that my newly-installed copy of itunes in copying the tracks to the iPod at a much lower sample rate than before, even though it is using the exact same music files.
Anyone know what is going on here?

Button in Content Viewer always opens the Menu of Content Viewer

I tried about everything. I searched in every Forum for my Problem.
But I couldn't find any answer, so I must be doing something completely wrong.
• I'm using the latest Adobe CS 5.5 to build a folio.
• I'm creating buttons, which work with the indesign preview (in the right hand Menu)
• But everytime I try them on my iPad with the Adobe Content Viewer App they don't work:
By tapping on the Button, the Menu of the Content Viewer App opens and not the preset action (Go to State...)
Please help me, I'm desperate!

Performance, minimum bandwidth, thumbnail previews for PDF and InDesign Files with web content viewer

Hi,
We are considering using DPS with a web content viewer for large PDFs and/or InDesign files. The client using a web viewer might have very limited bandwidth (some as low as 256Kbps). We ask:
1 - How well does the web viewer perform with very large PDFs and InDesign files (500 MB+) with limited bandwidth? Does the file stream in chunks and the PDF shows as soon as the first page or two are available, with the rest loading in the background, or does the entire file come down in one part and then shown?
2 - Can PDF and InDesign files support thumbnail previews? For example, one image per PDF page and user can scroll forward and back.
Your thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated.

Hi Stephen,
The way the web viewer works is that it converts the PDF/InDesign files to PNGs along with additional HTML assets. Assets are downloaded as they’re ready for a given page (e.g. first, page 1 is filled with its assets as they become available, then page 2, etc), so a reader wouldn’t need to wait for the entire article to load. The next few pages are also loaded in the background, so the reader wouldn’t be likely to notice lag as they flipped through pages to the next page after reading the current one. So the lag will depend on the size of an individual page.
For your question around thumbnails, the web viewer does not load a preview image so the reader would need to wait for the assets I described above to load.

CS 6 file now only opening in Cloud

Today, I "accidentally" opened a CS 6 project file in Cloud, and am now getting a "this project appears to be damaged, it cannot be opened" error message when I attempt to open it in CS 6 (I do understand this is a backwards compatibility issue, but in the past, I have been prompted to create a new CC version of a project with a _1 appended to the name, and today, it just seemed to "happen" without those dialogue boxes appearing). I could continue the project in Cloud, but the problem is, I need to share this file with another editor who only has CS 6. Is there a way I can get us back on the same page, without him needing to upgrade to Cloud?

How exactly are you trying to open the project in CS6? Are you double-clicking the project file? Or launching CS6 and using the Open Project command?
Nothing has changed in the way that CC and CC2014 operate when you load a project from an earlier version. That is, you should still be prompted to save the project to a new name (default "..._1"). I frequently test with old projects, and I'm always prompted to do the save-as. That's not to suggest that you haven't run into a problem that we don't know about but rather to just assure you that your current predicament is not the result of any intentional change in PPro's backward compatibility behavior.

Why does guest log-in only opens in Safari-safe browsing?

After upgrading hard drive and restoring Mountain Lion, my guest account now opens in Safari-safe browsing only. Prior to the hard drive upgrade, guest could log in and have full access instead of just internet only.

HELP! My .ai file now only opens as a pdf!

Last week I finished my artwork and saved as usual as an .ai file. I checked it again a few days ago, made a few amendments, and it was fine. Today I tried to open it but a box I have never seen before seems to think my document is a pdf and I get the option to open either 'image' or 'pages'. I open pages and the artwork does not look such great resolution as it did previously. How did this happen? Anyone enlighten me. Many thanks.

Does it respond the same way if you use File>Open from within Illustrator? If it opens as an illustrator file, try doing a SaveAs and save it in a new place. If the new file works correctly, throw away the other.

Why does Safari's Top Sites open when I click on View in iTunes?

For some reason, whenever I click on a link in Safari that requires another application to open, (iTunes for example), now a new browser window opens to Safari's Top Sites page. It appears to have started after the recent update. Anybody else having this problem? Is there a solution?

From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

Opening multiple tables in data view

i've not been able to figure out how to open more than one table, each having a seperate tab. every time i click on a table it replaces the one already tabbed.
is there a way to do this? i.e. have more than 1 table opened in a seperate tab?

You can freeze a tab using the pin button in the tab's toolbar.
Even more useful is the Preferences - Database - Objectviewer - Automatically Freeze.
