Why do 'regular' colors (0 to 1) look different in 32 bit mode?

I know the 32bit mode offers the ability to work with colors beyond the 0 to 1 limit.
What I don't understand is why 'normal' colors appear brighter in 32bit mode.
A gradient from 0 to 1 looks quite different in 16bit mode than it does in 32bit.
I've messed around with the preview settings but am unable to match the appearence of the 16 bit mode.
Thanks.

Because you're working with different gamma factors.
Most integer formats (8 and 16 bit) are using gamma 2.2 (mid-gray is near 128).  This is close to human perception, and makes best use of the available bits.
Floating point formats (32 bit) are using gamma 1.0 (mid-gray is near 0.18).  This means the image is close to how light works, and makes it more accurate for some effects and calculations.

Are you asking about the colorful icons in the video?
The video must have been done with an Aperture version 3.2.4 or earlier. Since Aperture 3.3 are the icons drab and gray - the Aperture 3.3 Release Notes are calling this:
Newly designed monochrome source list and toolbar icons.
The Release notes will tell you, what has changed since then:

  • Why does my lock screen settings page look different?

I just got my S4 mini and I am trying to set up lock screen widgets but according to all the tutorials, my options under Settings > Lock Screen looks different. I do not have the "Multiple Widgets" option. I DO have the "Favorite Apps or Camera" option that needs to be switched on or off, BUT it's grayed out! I just did the updates so that can't be it. What do I do??

The options are dependent/limited based on which lock screen you choose.  For example, if you choose a lock screen of Swipe, you'll see a choice for the Multiple Widgets that you were originally asking about.  If you choose a lock screen of Pattern or PIN, the Multiple Widget option (along with several others) isn't available with those particular lock screens.

  • Two files built in Photoshop identical color; placed in Illustrator look different

Here is my situation: I'm working on a set of labels. We are adding a new product to the line, so there are existing labels. So for the new label, I started from one of the already existing labels in Photoshop. I made the necessary changes and saved it out as an eps. It looks identical in color to the other .eps files. Next I opened an illustrator file of one of the existing labels where I have a placed an eps file and then the text done in illustrator. When I replace the existing eps file with the new eps file, the color shifts slightly.
I don't understand why. One photoshop file is built off an existing one. They look the same in Photoshop. Place it in illustrator...different. I haven't changed anything.
The only the thing that has changed is the older file was built in CS3 and the new one is in CS5. Would that matter? How can I fix this?
    Thanks very much.

In Photoshop >>edit >> assign Profile >> and choose the color profile you were working with in CS3. If you do not know which profile you were working with assign US Web Coated SWOP 2 to both files.

  • Why is a color print from CS5 so different from the same image in CS4?

I have made prints from the same file using CS4 and CS5, and the prints from CS4  are showing what I think is good color.  My monitor is calibrated, and I have always been quite happy with prints from CS4.  When I make prints of the same files using CS5, the color is terrible compared to the CS4  print.  I am using the same printer, same sRGB color space and all the settings in the "Print" dialog windows.  I make sure the Color Handling box is set to "Photoshop Manages Colors" and I then go to the "Page Setup" box and make sure Color Settings is set to Off (No Color Adjustments).  I am using a New MacPro Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB ram.  I did notice that Apple Software Update did install Epson drivers after I installed CS5 Creative Suite 5 Design Premium. The color using CS5 looks the same starting in either 32 bit or in 64 bit.   Another thing I notice is that printing on an Epson 2200 Stylus and using their 13x19 paper that the prints are being cropped to 5/8 inch into the full screen size of the images. I.E. The prints are losing 5/8 inch of what I see on the 30" Apple monitor. in both dimensions of the screen image. This cropping effect is showing now using CS4 and CS5.  I have "Position" checked for Center Image, and Scale to Fit Media is also checked.  I've been using PS since version 2 and have always been quite happy with the prints from my Epson printers and the prints from my Photo Lab, but the prints I am getting using CS5 are terrible. All the settings are the same in both the CS4 and CS5 "PRINT" windows.
    HELP!!!!  :-)

I have tried all of these things. I have checked and double-checked the print dialog. Sheet after sheet of paper goes by. Ink, at $40 per tank, is wasted. Results are still wrong. I followed your video. You use an Epson printer. I use an HP. Different print dialogs. different results. Whatever worked in previous PS versions does not work now. PS CS5 requires new settings to get the results that match what was determined by years of evolution and fine-tuning.
I set up all of those print dialog parameters but it required an adjustment layer or two to get the results I got using previous Photoshop. So I could do that with every image I printed with good results using previous versions. There is nothing out of gamut in these images, so I don't have unrealistic expectations about more saturation in the prints. Anyway, it's an 8-color printer that can handle a pretty wide gamut compared to a 4-color.
Wade, I know you are trying to help but this finger-wagging "error in your ways" and "you need to change your ways" stuff is patronizing. I did "change my ways" and try everything in your video. All was not well on the paper. I'm glad it worked out for you but it didn't for me. Accept it. I'm not some novice hobbyist still getting the hang of Photoshop. I've been using Photoshop since version 2. Adobe changed something in CS5. I haven't seen Chis Cox or any Adobe staffer jump into this discussion and say otherwise. Maybe there are no answers from the folks who should know the most about it. Maybe they're working on it.
It's not the first time Adobe has broken a tool. Anyone remember what happened to Outline Stroke in Illustrator CS2? It had previously made a path that could be edited by selecting points but after CS2, it was broken. Illustrator made a filled path that was nearly impossible to edit with all of the overlapping points. It was finally fixed in CS4. It's hard to understand how a useful tool that functioned properly in every version since it was introduced became an unusable mess. Maybe that's the case with PS CS5 and printing.
With 4,300+ posts in 14 months, maybe Wade has more time to tinker and tell us about it. I don't.
Or I could just print in CS4. At this point it's not that important to spend several days of testing to be able to say that CS5 can print my legacy stuff that was created and printed with various color profiles over a 12 year period. Maybe a more disciplined approach to color management would be a good way to work in the future when creating images, I'm dealing with tried-and-true printable images that were not done that way.
As long as Adobe doesn't make me give up CS4 to use CS5, I'll use it for printing.

  • Colors in PDF preview look different from ai file.

    Hello,
I am having a little trouble with the pdf I created in Illustrator. See images below for explanation. It's only happening to certain text. Can someone explain what is happening, how can it be fixed, and how to prevent it from happening again?
    Thank you in advance!
I get this as thumbnail image on my desktop and in Finder, when I click space bar to quick view, and when its preview as an attachment in an email.
This is how it's supposed to look. This only happens when the PDF is actually opened..it goes from the above img to this.

Not quite sure, but it's a high possibilty I am using spot colors. I pulled the color from the panetone swatch. Is there a way to turn that off? No, "INVOICE" isn't placed twice. Im currently trying to research this on the net.
    thanks for responding.

  • Why can't I start my MacBook 5,2 in 64-bit mode?

I've checked: The processor is of x86_64 architecture (Core 2 Duo, 2.13Ghz). I've tried holding 6 and 4 while booting. I've tried the command line route. I've tried Startup Mode Selector. Nothing works. In fact, Startup Mode Selector says that, while my processor is technically capable of supporting 64-bit mode, Apple doesn't support it.
What gives, and is there a hack around this?

    Follow up info:
I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.8). I need to run Windows under VirtualBox, but VBox will only recognize all my RAM (6 GB) if I boot into 64-bit mode. I have to throttle the RAM available to VBox back to 2048 MB to keep it from misreading host memory levels and aborting.
    Follow up question:
If I upgrade to Lion, will it boot to 64-bit by default with my hardware, or no?

  • Why does my color look so different in CS5 compared to CS4?

    Hi everyone,
I am currently working on a document in InDesign CS5...have placed some CMYK artwork that I created in Photoshop CS5. All of my color settings are synchronized. Why does the color in the artwork look SO different compared to Photoshop? If I place the same artwork into InDesign CS4, everything matches as it should (once again, all applications use the same color settings/are synchronized).
I am completely baffled...what am I missing? Is there another setting I have missed out on within InDesign?
    Thank you,
    Christine

Okay....you are not going to believe this!! Perhaps this is a bug or perhaps this is a one-time-mystery-of-the-unexplained thing.
I went into my desktop version of CS5 and loaded completely different color settings...pressed okay, then went BACK straight away and reloaded my usual [custom] color settings and all suddenly looked PERFECT. [I am going to have to verify this when I go into work tomorrow as I just tested via remote login so am looking at things via my macbook screen. The color difference was VERY noticeable at first between the two ID versions on my desktop so I was able to easily tell. Now they look the same.
All in all, than you SO much for your help (so this was *not* a waste of time). All this troubleshooting really helped me a lot as to what to look for in future similar instances.

  • Why are the colors in Illustrator and Photoshop so off?

    Hi,
Let me just start off by saying I have the color mode in both Illustrator and Photoshop set to RGB. Yet, there is a noticeable color difference between a picture on the internet and when I paste it in for example Photoshop.
    Picture from the internet:
    Picture when pasted in Photoshop:
It's the same thing in Illustrator. And this is not just with pictures by the way, it's affects all the colors I use, which is a major pain in the rear.
    Anyone know a fix?

Well, my suggestion in post #13, was to help me find out what the cause of your problem is. It doesn’t solve your problem permanently but temporarily, only for the current session of Photoshop or Illustrator by making these programs show your image without applying any color management conversions.  So, you have to do this every time you open such files in these programs.
If you want to understand what is going on and be in control, you have to go through a lot of walls of text unfortunately .
I’ll try to explain it roughly but if you don’t understand it you need to read more about color management.
You are using Safari and this is how its color management  works:
    https://developer.apple.com/library/safari/technotes/tn2220/_index.html
    on that page it says:
"Important: For images that are not tagged with a color profile, their color values will be displayed on the screen by Safari with no optimization or adjustment for differences between devices in how they render colors. This may result in the colors not being displayed as originally intended"
This made me think that like most images on the web, the image you are using doesn’t have a color profile. In that case, assuming a certain scenario based on your input, the reason it is displayed differently from Photoshop and Illustrator is because you have a color profile of your monitor used by your system that is different than the color space used for the display of the image. By default RGB Images without a color profile are displayed using  the color space set for the working space in the Color Settings of Photoshop and Illustrator. Also by default this color space is sRGB.  If your monitor was also with an sRGB profile assigned in the system, which is the case with all monitors that come without a color profile provided from the manufacturer, you should have not experienced this problem because Photoshop and Illustrator will see that the color space you want to display your image is sRGB and your monitor is sRGB, and there will be no color conversions because both color spaces, source and destination are the same.  Unless someone else has setup your system ,color management, and installed a monitor profile,  my guess is that the manufacturer of your monitor has provided a color profile installed in your system that is not sRGB.
When you choose View > Proof Setup > Monitor RGB, this in effect turns off the color management because you are displaying the image in the same color space as the one assigned to your monitor.
If you want to turn off the color management permanently which will be valid only when displaying images in the sRGB color space, you can assign the sRGB color profile to your monitor. This will show the images on your monitor with the same colors as those displayed without color management in the other applications and choosing View > Proof Setup > Monitor RGB will make no difference.
Non color managed programs can display the color only in the way your monitor displays it. Color managed programs simulate other outputs on your monitor. The only way to match the display in color managed and non color managed software is to turn off the color managed software. This will display the same color values with the same color in all programs on your monitor.
The purpose of the color management is to allow the viewer  see the colors as intended (the way the creator sees them when creating the image). Different devices and media output the same color values differently resulting in different color. Therefore, when the viewer uses different device or media the colors if not color managed properly will look different or not as close as possible.
When you turn off the color management, or even when it is on but not properly applied, which I suspect is the case in your situation, you can’t be sure that the colors you see are as intended. In other words, you can’t tell if an image is supposed to look the way you see it, and you can’t create images providing means that will allow others to see them the way you see them.
So, for whatever reasons you want to make colors look the same in all your programs, have in mind that this is valid only on the current state of your monitor, and this also cuts the possibility to see and send to others colors as intended.

  • Color Looks Different in Aperture Viewer Compared to Full Screen

The color in my photos looks different depending on how I view them. In Aperture's Viewer and in Photoshop Elements 6, it looks what I consider to be normal. In Aperture's Full Screen view, and in other applications such as Preview and Safari, the colors look super-saturated: much more vibrant than in real life.
The photos were imported into Aperture as JPEGs, directly from my camera. Previews are turned off in Aperture, and I have it set to export using sRGB. I'm using an external Dell display that's been calibrated with Spyder2 Express. Turning on Onscreen Proofing in Aperture (and trying different profiles) doesn't seem to change the display in the Viewer at all.
How can I make the color in the Viewer match the color in other applications? It's hard to edit when I can't accurately see what I'm doing.

Thanks for the quick and helpful reply! I didn't know there was such a thing as a default display, but after setting that to the external the photos look good again.
I guess I wasn't using the right search terms, but after reading your reply I was able to find this huge thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1394928&start=0&tstart=0
It seems to me that this is an OS bug, because the images were displaying incorrectly in Preview, Safari, etc. Each display has been calibrated and has a ColorSync profile, and the OS knows which display the window is on, so it should be able to figure out which profile to use.

  • Why must I open iTunes in 32-bit mode to play Burn Notice Season 7 episodes on a MacOS 10.8.4 system?

I have an Intel Mac Pro (tower system) running MacOS 10.8.4 with iTunes 11.0.4 (4).  Why must I open iTunes 11.0.4 (4) in 32-bit mode to play the latest (as in June 2013) episodes of Burn Notice (Season 7) when PRIOR episodes of Burn Notice (i.e., Season 6 and below) have no problems being played in 64-bit mode?  But after I play the Season 7 episode ONCE in 32-bit mode iTunes, I can restart iTunes in 64-bit mode and then play that same episode without a problem?  It seems like something in the file is erroneously set in 32-bit mode upon downloading from the iTunes Store that once played in a 32-bit mode iTunes, upgrades it so it can be played in a 64-bit mode iTunes.  If I try to play the Season 7 episode in 64-bit mode iTunes without first playing in 32-mode iTunes, I get the dreaded error message, "This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes."

    Just got same problem.
#1. There is no Box, under Label or anywher to uncheck or check.
#2. The device I want to use does not have an update driver. What I really need if for the Box to check or uncheck which should be there according to Apple Help.
#3. I tried this, resetting the whole computer's kernal extension by using a Terminal command (although I don't like doing that). It didn't work. sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386
So I reset it to: sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64
But emphasize, again, I don't like doing SUDO commands in Terminal.
    So...Anything else to try?
Thanks for any info that might help.

  • Why do colors look different in PDF saved from Powerpoint with glow?

When I save a Microsoft Powerpoint (2008 for Mac) Presentation as PDF, then view the PDF with Preview (application on Mac) it looks right.
But when I view it with Adobe Reader, the color is off (it looks dim like there is a gray screen over it) on any page with glow.
? Can anyone tell me why this happens, or how I can get the colors to look the same as the original Powerpoint?
    Thank you!
    Carey

You use Microsoft Office programs to save the docs as PDFs?  If so, no Adobe software is involved; you should ask in the appropriate Microsoft Office forum.

    Hi,
You might have the WiFi + 3G version of the iPad.
This means you can put a SIM card into the iPad and get the internet where you get mobile coverage.

  • Why does my footage look different in final cut than in color?

when i render in color and send back to final cut, the color grades don't look the same back in final cut as they do when i view them in color. any ideas why?

Mostly because COLOR is setup to work in 709 space and preview the correct gamma setting of 2.2 for legitimate broadcast use.
Quicktime and Final Cut make an assumption that you're using a graphics monitor for preview and uses a gamma setting of 1.8. This is a fundamental error and incompatibility.
Apparently Snow Leopard is supposed to address this issue.
