Why do some files copy when I move them?

This seems to happen with most files lately. When I use the drag and drop method of moving files, my Mac wants to copy them to the new location rather that move them in the traditional manner.

I do see that behavior if I try to drag an item's "preview icon" from column view's preview column. I also can't drag that preview icon to the Trash.
Icons in the preview column seem to be "special", though - I'm not sure what they actually represent. I wonder also if Finder becomes "busy" with an item when you click on it's preview icon. I can move the same item from its regular column-view list without having to copy it, so it's not a permissions issue.

They are positioned in relation to the original object, and the Group that object is in. Copying them to another object may sometimes require you reposition them.

File -- New Folder creates 2 folders, and files dissapear when I move them

Hi. I am having a rather bizarre problem. When I am using Finder, I go to File --> New Folder and an "untitledfolder" appears. However, two of them appear. I rename one and leave the other alone. When I move files into the named folder, they disappear! I cannot delete either folder, but sometimes I can.
Also bizarre, say I have repeated the process above 4 times, naming folders "temp1" "temp2" etc. I delete the folders. If I try to create a new folder with the name "temp1" I get a message "folder with that name already exists," even if the folder appears to be deleted.
If I try to delete them and close then reopen the Finder window, "temp1" will show up. When I click on "temp1" the name changes to another folder I tried to create, such as "temp2". All the folders are empty.
Does anybody have any explanation for this weird behavior?

I had the same problem on an external drive connected wia FW. I am also confuse about the bahaviour of Finder. I am very new on Mac and I used until now Windows and Dos. Finder does not have a rigid tree path between files and folders. Especially in columns wiev it is terrible; you see the same file in different places and it is difficoult to manage them. Sinde I am migrating from a Win PC and I have several external HD to transfer I already made the mistake do delete something. Furtunately I have many BU copies but I feel like driving blind in fog. I will appreciata any help on how to limit the finder to a normal "file manager of the old good dos". It is a bug that will be fixed or will it remain this way ??? Or it is me not understanding the way to use it ???

Disc Burner. Why are some files not readable or writeable?

Hello,
I am trying to backup my friends computer files on a beige G3 (233 MHz). I am burning about 6 DVDs of AIF music files. Most of the files are about 30 - 40 Megs in size. Often I receive error messages on particular files that read:
"The operation cannot be completed because some data cannot be read or written.
(Error code - 36)"
Followed by the choices: "Stop" or "Continue".
I have a bad feeling that my startup disk is too small but I am not sure.
Most of the files work fine. However some of the files cause disc burner to not be able to use them in the disc image before I burn. Why would this be?
Here are the specifications:
Computer: beige G3 with two hard drives (one SCSI and one ATA hard drive) and a Pioneer DVR-110D DVD writer which is Apple supported (Apple system profiler indicates Apple supported on this DVD writer). My blank DVD disks are Sony Vermatim DVD-R (1 - 16x speed support). Although I think my beige G3 only writes them at about 2 or 4x.
I am using OS 10.1.5. My startup disk which has OS 10.1.5 in it is a 4 GIG SCSI disk. Is this big enough for a startup disk (for creating 4.5 GIG DVDs)? My files are on the second hard drive which is a 40 GIG ATA disk.
I have a bad feeling that my OSX startup drive is too small for disk burning - it is only 4 GIGs in total and OSX Disc burner (Disc copy) is first making a disk image on my startup volume before it burns it. Perhaps that disk image is too large for the startup volume. Is there any way I could ask OSX to put this disk image on the second larger hard drive instead (not the startup drive?).
Here is my process (I hope I am doing this right - I am new at this):
1. I first insert a blank DVD-R
2. A message pops up asking my if I would like to create a blank disc image for this disk (I think this is the typical Disk Copy utility window. I say "yes" and give it a name and choose the "DVD-R or DVD-RAM" option. (I am not sure if there are other important settings to choose here or better settings to use but I guessed the other options that seemed obvious. A blank disk image is created with an icon that looks like a DVD disk.
3. Then I drag my chosen files to this blank disc image. It takes about 30 minutes to copy over. Thats when I receive the error message that some files couldn't be "read or written". The other files work fine but it would be nice if they all worked.

4. Then I choose file/burn in the top menu and the DVD is created. This takes another 20 - 30 minutes. At the very end of the process another message pops up saying:
"Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code -28)" Followed by an "OK" button.
However all the files that made it onto the final DVD are fine - its just that its not all of the ones I originally chose in the first step when dragging to create the disk image.
Am I doing this the right way?

To follow up, I have some good news. After following your advice Kappy, it now works very well Thanks! Instead of using the 4 GIG volume for the OS, I am now using an 8 GIG partition on an 80 GIG drive. So now the OS has some room to operate. No disk errors occured on my first DVD
Now there was one problem. The second DVD burned gave me an error. I am not sure why but I am going to guess that because I had to installed the OS onto an 8 GIG partition maybe the OS needs to be rebooted in between disk burns because although 8 GIGs is certainly greater than the 4 GIGs I gave it last time, it still isn't a lot of space - maybe just enough to do one DVD at a time. Thats only a guess. So I rebooted to see if that clears the system out ready for the next DVD and I am trying to burn the second DVD again. If I remember I will report back. In any case, yes, this seems to be working. I hope this second DVD burns well too.

A MacBook will use Time Machine to make local backups so that when connected to an external drive it will backup a lot faster.
to disable this, you must use a command under terminal.
to locate terminal, do a search for it under spotlight (the magnifying glass on the top right corner), should be the first hit.
once under terminal, type the following text exactly:
sudo tmutil disablelocal
hit enter.
you will be asked to input your password, if you do not have a password, you will have to create one before performing this command. after entering your password, hit enter again and close terminal.
in a few minutes the space taken up by time machine should be cleared.

Can only load the files in by running them trhough Adobe Camera RAW first and loading them as TIFFS into Aperture. JPEGs form the Sony load into Aperture just fine. Have repaired datebase, permissions ect but no change. Aperture 3.4.5 on a Power Mac. Whats up? Anyone know?

You mention that 'most' of your files are DNG. Try
running the effected files through Adobe DNG
converter again and then import your reprocessed
files to Aperture and see if the problem persists.
I had a problem with a batch of D2x files converted
to DNG which had been metadata tagged by
PhotoMechanic (the evil app).

Are you getting any of the embedded XMP metadata
coming into Aperture during the import process?
Already tried that multiple times...no luck. I'm wondering though if it might be related to metadata as you suggest. I'm still trying different things to see what happens.
I was able to alleviate the problem on one set of images by painstakingly searching my external drive for the oldest backups I could find - CR2 files from before DNG conversion. I then ran those through DNG Converter and tried importing them again (this time, I embedded NO thumbnail, but I'm not sure if that made the difference - I think it was more likely a fluke in the original conversion that caused the problem). This time, it worked.
Now, the big problem is that I still have a couple hundred images for which I can't seem to locate the original CR2 files. I don't typically keep them after conversion, as I don't have the space for both.

Email duplication - files copy instead of move - originals still in inbox

Hi all, I am new to this site. i just got an iphone and have to say that while most of the multimedia features are awesome, I am having much difficulty with the 'business' features.
I have set-up up my corporate email - it is on an exchange server but my IT ppl set-up the phone through IMAP I think because I don't have the 'Enterprise monthly package'. I am not using mobileme either.
Emails are syncing (wirelessly) however I am having 2 major issues...
1. The mailbox does not always automatically update with new mail as it should through the 'push' service. Most times I have to open the mailbox on the iphone and then it will prompt the mailbox to connect and retrieve new mail.
2. The 2nd issue I have is that when I move emails from my inbox to a subfolder (under the inbox) on my iphone, it is not moving them on my PC mailbox. Well, it is moving the files but the original file also remains in the inbox. I don't have this problem when I move files on my PC- the iphone seems to recognize and not duplicate but when i move on the iphone, it does not move the original file on my pc). Shouldn't the 2 mailboxes (iphone & PC) be identical?
Lastly, I am very disappointed that I am unable to wirelessly sync my calendar and contacts from Outlook without purchasing an additional monthly package from AT&T? Most other service providers offer this at no additional charge. if anybody knows of any applications that will wirelessly sync calendar and contacts (2 way push), please post that as well.

After adding text to an unprotected .pdf file the text disappears when I move the cursor and want to add a second box of text. The text in the first box reappears when I double click on the space where the box was. How do I set the text so that it remains visible and printable?

I think the data in the PDF file was filled-in using MAC preview.
One option is to ask the user to fill the file again using Adobe Reader or Acrobat.

How to get your file folder organization back when you move to a new computer?

Your PSE8 is using the default, new empty catalog that's created when PSE is installed.
In Windows, search your entire computer for this file:
catalog.pse8db
The largest one that's found will be your old catalog. If your computer people didn't restore that catalog file (and its entire directory), ask them where the heck it is.

Why are some files missing from import screen?

I'm trying to import some files into LR, but the import screen isn't showing all of the files that are in the folder I've selected.
I've notice this only when there are multiple files with the same base filename. For example, when the folder contains the following files, LR will show all of them in the import screen:
file.mp4
file1.jpg
file2.jpg
However, "file1.jpg" will not be shown in the import screen when the folder contains the following files:
file1.mp4
file1.jpg
file2.jpg
I've been unable to find an LR preference that covers this. Have I overlooked it?

Here's a guess ... emphasis on the word "guess" ... when you have file1.mp4 and file1.jpg, the .jpg is considered a "sidecar" and won't be imported ... unless ... you select the option in Preference (general tab) that says "Treat JPG files next to raw files as separate photos" ... yes, I know the option says "raw" and your file is an "mp4", but it takes you less than a minute to give ita try
