No app installed that will view the pics and bar codes.

File suffix of the pics & bar codes? Example: .pic, .bmp, .jpg, etc.

That means your iMac could not find a system to use for startup. That may mean the internal hard drive has become faulty, or the hard drive mechanism is fine, but the startup volume ("Macintosh HD" unless you renamed it) may have some type of data corruption that makes it unbootable.
First, you should try resetting PRAM

and if that does not help, use this procedure to reset SMC (power management). If your iMac is from 2008, this is the procedure for Intel (not PowerPC) Macs.

Disconnect all peripheral devices. When you connect it back to power, if you have been using a power strip of some type, try connecting it directly to a wall outlet, by itself (at least initially). Start up with nothing but the power cord connected, then add only standard mouse and keyboard. If it works, run it that way for a while.
If PRAM and SMC reset have no effect, you should insert your Mac OS X installation disc (for the currently installed system) in the optical drive, and restart with the C key held down. This should get you to the Installer screen, where you can run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
In Disk Utility, does the internal hard drive appear in the sidebar? If so, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and go to the First Aid tab. Use Repair Disk. If an error is found, note if Disk Utility was able to fix it or not.
You can then quit Disk Utility and attempt to restart normally.

Hi, I have Safari version 3.1.1 and in the last two weeks, I've been missing data and having in it's place a small little blue box with a question mark show up in Safari and in some of my mail downloads too.

I have exactly the same problem with safari and mail but firefox works fine. If i go to a website that requires flash in safari it will say i need to install flash 8 to view the stuff even though i have flash 9 installed. I thought it might have been a problem with flash and thought about uninstalling and reinstalling but because firefox works fine it would seem to be a safari problem. This only started happening with the latest quicktime update to, and i've tried downgrading back to an older version but my pro-apps require the latest version to run.
I did the same updates on my macbook but didn't encounter the same problems,although i lost audio playback on avi's in quicktime which i have since fixed with perian.

I have 10.6.7 system software and my safari is 5.0.4
I have called apple twice with this problem already but nothing has helped except for short times.
I have reset safari about one dozen times and when I do I reset the top 7 items and I've emptied the cache in addition just in case. I've also taken my safari preference plist out of my library and trashed it.
And I've run disk utilities many times and restarted my computer. Each thing I do will solve the problem for a short time, even up to a day or more (or less) but then it comes back. For instance on Facebook maybe 1/8th of the thumbnail images have the little blue boxes with the question marks but most don't. I can't figure it out. Sometimes even the iPAD safari gets them too but my firefox doesn't show them and neither does Safari on my eMac.
Yesterday the question marks even showed up in ONE mailing on all 3 computers with the question marks in the blue boxes (meaning my iMac, my eMac and my iPad) but then it just all resolved after a few hours. This does sound like possibly a server problem except today it's happening (in Safari again) only on this iMac in Safari (not firefox) and not on the other two devices.
One more thing, since they changed my radio on the roof for my wireless internet, the 5.8 phone cuts out the internet when I use it. The problem has gotten worse since they changed the radio to the same frequency as the phone, it's a much faster service than the 2.4 radio. I don't know if this is related or not.

Is it possible, Carolyn, that this would mainly and almost always be only affecting the iMac and Safari in the iMac if it were a server issue? Right now Safari has more blue boxes with question marks than ever and the eMac and iPad have none. Firefox on the iMac has none also.
I should try a direct connection and by pass the router and see if that makes a difference.
I will contact them tomorrow but I want to get clear in my head first all the facts and possibilities.

From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Appearance tab. Tick the box next to: Display images when the page opens.
If that box is already ticked, from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...

If you still have problems loading images, go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Lately instead of images coming up I have been getting a blank box which in the center has a smaller blue square with a white question mark inside, does anyone have any suggestions. Using safari version 8.0.3 on mac OX X Yosemite 10.10.2

From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

I have a folder with a question mark and I hear the drive running I think my drive crashed

I have an imac intel duel core I run OSX 6.8 lately the gear has been hanging up a lot I keep haveing to shut down and force quit and reboot. yesterday a folder with a question mark showed up. today nothing shows up but I can hear the hard drive. I booted up the os dvd for SL and it wont see the hard drive. only the dvd player and idisk (which I can't use anymore ) I have disconnected my external storages. I am now on my mac airbook chatting to you.

As long as you have been backing up the system it's minor inconvenience of replacing the Internal HD and restoring from your backup. New hard drive in 2009 iMac has been installed and now I have a folder with a question mark displayed on start up.

I installed a Barracuda 500 gb drive. When I attempted a reinstall based off an external hard drive using time machine, it showed an error message of not being able to complete the back up. This was after I formatted the new drive using disc utility. I reformatted a different external drive and let it make several back ups. I then put the new drive into the machine and now I only get the folder with the question mark. It is a late 2009 iMac. The OS updates have been through the on line store and I do not have back up discs. Everything SHOULD be backed up on my external.

when you partition and format the new bare drive are you running off of an install disc in the optical drive? I have used the install disk for Leopard to access the Disc Utility (did not install Leapard, just used it to access the Disc Utility) as well as the machine prompting me to take action due to the new hard drive being recognized, again using disc utility and using the install disc provided by the hard drive manufacturer. All of these were done according to instruction as previously mentioned, on a reformatted and partitioned drive each time.
What OS version are you nstalling on the bare drive before you attempt to restore from your Time Machine backup? I have not installed any OS on the bare drive. I do not have a copy of Lion 10.7.5 as I purchased it through the app store. I was under the impression I could reinstall all the data through Time Machine but that is proving elusive - frustrating.
Are you trying to use the Time Machine "star wars" interface to restore or are you using Migration Assistant? I am not using migration assistant. I have been using the Time Machine restore application.

Blue Box with White Question Mark

All of a sudden, I started receiving the Blue Box with a White Question Mark in my Safari Internet. I test the site with two other browsers and the behavior was the same. I have not plug-ins recently installed and did clean my cache. Any suggestions? Running Mavericks. I ran an Adobe Flash update yesterday, but the behavior is affected today. I reset Safar after runnign Disk Utility<Repair Disk Permissions.

So I've seen that alot of people are having the same problem I have been having with anything on websites that uses quicktime. I know its got to be the recent Windows Update and I wanted to go to my control panel to delete the update but I'm not sure what to look for..
Does anyone know the specific name of the update from Windows that I should delete?

If you've read the post's here it is just basically unchecking the flash Media preference in QT settings. And having Macromedia Flash Player 8 installed. Some websites use the flashy one which QT don't handle from within a browser. Microsoft's windows update is very specific to each computer other than security updates. To just install anything on the update or have it set to automatically install updates would be foolish and could lead to problems.
