Why do some old Mac programs run slowly in Classic mode?
I successfully installed OS 9 Classic Mode on an eMac. At first, some of my old programs (Thinkin' Things, Millie's Math House, both edmark) ran fine, but as time went on they started jerking and freezing as they ran. I re-started and it continued to do the same thing. Any ideas on why these programs run slowly like this?
I gathered the info you suggested in previous message, but I was wondering if you could help me interpret it.
Here's what I got:
In Activity Monitor; System Memory; Page ins/outs = 12277/0.
Memory is listed as 1.024 MB, with 822.11 MB free.
I looked under CPU tab in Activity Monitor and did not exactly now what I was looking for. What should I do with the CPU #'s?
I opened Console in Utilities & there were any clues or repeating messages.
The 40 MB hard drive has 9 MB free.
I ran the 9.2 CD-based educ. software again. Some does not boot up. Some run fine. Others are choppy at times.
Anyway, does this info suggest anything to you. I wonder if it's a compatability issue between System 10.4.11, Classic Mode and the Power PC chip? Was this common with Classic Mode?
I thank you so much in adavance dor any suggestions on how to solve this problem.

My Mac is running slowly and having some gliches when opening programs. How can I clean up the disk to make it more efficient?
learn how to use Recovery Mode
Don't do anything until you can restore and have repaired the disk drive.
Post should get moved to either ML (10.8,.4) or iMac forum
Swap out the hdd for an SSD : )
Don't do anything to clean it up unless you don't know how to first remove browser history from within the programs; low on disk space (I consider more than even the 15% minimum, more like 3--40%)
And do you have page outs? more than enough RAM? what actually leads you to ask? Programs aren't opening properly?
Sometimes it is easier to take the long road: just reinstall and restore.

Here is my problem. I have a lot of very old Mac programs that I would like to run on my Mac (PowerPC G5) under the Classic environment. These are quite valuable older programs that are not longer available.
These programs are on discs. I am not familiar with the correct designation for these disks but some of them have an "HD" label on them and others are labeled "Double Density 800KB". I purchased and external disk drive, but was not able to read these these old disks.
I think what needs to be done is have the old disks converted using an older Mac and older software into a format that can be read my my G5. Do any of you know of a company that provides such a service?
Do you have other suggestions to help me retrieve these older programs?
Thanks for your help.PLB11
The mechanics of your intention having been dealt with—although neither Rainer in Germany nor I in Australia can be but an extreme possibility—you will need to consider the logic of the matter also.
If these same applications are not already supported in OS 9 running on an OS 9-bootable Mac (that is, if the applications will not run in OS 9.2.1 at least), you will not be able to use them in the Classic Environment under OS X, and transfers to your G5 will not profit you at all.
Machine-language programs may stand a chance of successfully making the leap (eg WriteNow runs in the CE of OS 10.3.9), but programs with optional (or obligatory) 24-bit operation will probably not survive the transition, nor will those that have no ability to run in a PowerPC (601 processors and later) environment necessarily do so unless they were 'fat binary' (containing the ability to emulate 68K processors).
You may be doing the equivalent of expecting a mediæval barber to replace a cornea successfully. As has been hinted, at least, with the possible exception of machine-language programs, OS 8.0/8.1 may be as modern as you can go, using a 68040 processor probably, or a 60x if you are fortunate. -

My MAC is running slowly and I am having to continually remove unwanted pop ups and leave unwanted pages which appear including MACkeeper. If I am on a sports website, betting pages appear - any ideas?
Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

Can't run software in Classic mode
Boy, I've tried to fix this myself and just can't. I have a new out-of-the-box Mac Mini with a generic USB keyboard. I've got some old Mac software (really old) which is really a main reason I bought the mini. I can't get Classic to run because it's not already installed. I have the OS9.2.1 disc, but I can't boot from the CD (I tried pressing C on bootup -- either my Mac can't boot from CD or my keyboard doesn't communicate properly). When I try to run the OS9 installer to get Classic to work, I get the hair-pulling error message that I need to run the installer in Classic
mode.
A friend said I need the discs which came with the Mini, but I don't think there are any. Can the software which should have come with it be downloaded and burned on to a new CD in order to create a bootable CD?
Argh!!! Please help!
WarrenThanks -- I did try that, just forgot to mention it. the CD isn't one of the options in startup disk. It says I can choose the hard drive or the network, and I've tried both. A friend said that Mac Minis can't boot from CD -- don't know if that's correct or not, but I can't seem to get it as an option.
I've tried to find any CD that may have come with the Mac Mini -- my friend said to look for one called "additional software and apple hardware test CD that came with the Mac Mini" but that is nowhere to be found. Either it didn't actually come with it (my hunch) or the staff in the receiving department took them out for safekeeping and hid them in a drawer somewhere and have forgotten. (Also possible.)
I can't imagine that I'm the only person in the world with this problem, but my tech support staff warned me in the first place. I wanted to try using some macs mixed in with our PC setup (because they can run this software, and because it seemed easy) and they said that they wouldn't be able to provide much support, since they're all PC people. I figured "how much support can it need? They're designed to be easy to use!" Oh well.
I'd really be keen to get any more suggestions from anyone who can help!!

My iBook G4 on OS X Tiger has begun to run slowly. The CPU jumps from around 10% usage to up to 98%. Programs all run slowly, the Internet browser freezes and takes a long time to load pages, and I cannot run an Internet browswer and say MS Word at the same time or they are unbearably slow. I don't know what to do to fix this.

Did you repair permissions after the 10.4.8 upgrade?
When was the last time you performed system maintenance on the machine. System maintenance ought to be performed at least once a month. If it is sporadically done, a small problem can cascade over time into a large problem.
For regular maintenance (about twice a month) I use OnyX.
If you don't have a copy, ,make sure you download the version specific to Tiger.
In OnyX, you'll use the automation panel selecting:
Optimization - full;
Maintenance scripts,
Cache's - clear "system" and "user".
Ordinarily you wouldn't clear the cache's, however, given the problem you describe, I think it would be best done now.
Restart the computer once OnyX is finished (do not use the computer while it's running). On the restart, repair permissions via Disk Utility in your Utility folder. One last thing, the restart will take a little longer since the cache's are cleared.
If the above doesn't speed up the computer, post back. You may need to check the HD for corruption.

3 issues on Apple Mac, program runs fine on Windows
Hello,
some users have trouble running my app on their apple macintosh machines. i don't have one myself, so it's pretty hard for me to find what is causing the issues, i'd appreciate your help therefore.
1) frame not receiving close notification
public class Trakker_Main extends JFrame
public Trakker_Main()
// snipped some code
addWindowListener(new java.awt.event.WindowAdapter()
public void windowClosing(WindowEvent winEvt)
doShutdown();
}on my windows pc, "doShutdown" is called when i press ALT+F4 or the close button in the top right corner.
on a users mac pc, it is not called when he presses the "apple + Q" combination. why?
2) (drag&)drop not working
i have a JTable and enable drop support for files from windows explorer / apple "finder" with this call:
fileTable.setTransferHandler(new FSTransfer());
public class FSTransfer extends TransferHandler
public boolean importData(JComponent comp, Transferable t)
Util.log("DEBUG: importData called", Level.SEVERE);
// Make sure we have the right starting points
if (!(comp instanceof JTable))
return false;
Util.log("DEBUG: importData called 2", Level.SEVERE);
if (!t.isDataFlavorSupported(DataFlavor.javaFileListFlavor))
return false;
Util.log("DEBUG: importData called 3", Level.SEVERE);
try
@SuppressWarnings("unchecked")
List<File> data = (List<File>)t.getTransferData(DataFlavor.javaFileListFlavor);
File[] files = (File[])data.toArray();
Util.log("DEBUG: importData files: " + files.length, Level.SEVERE);
Thread thread = new Thread(new FileAddThread(files));
thread.start();
Util.log("DEBUG: importData thread started", Level.SEVERE);
setStatusText("Adding, please wait...");
return true;
catch (Exception ex)
Util.log("DRAGNDROP ERROR: " + ex.getMessage(), Level.SEVERE);
return false;
// we only support file lists
public boolean canImport(JComponent comp, DataFlavor[] transferFlavors)
Util.log("DEBUG: canImport called 1", Level.SEVERE);
if (comp instanceof JTable)
Util.log("DEBUG: canImport called 2", Level.SEVERE);
for (int i = 0; i < transferFlavors.length; i++)
if (!transferFlavors.equals(DataFlavor.javaFileListFlavor))
return false;
return true;
return false;
static final long serialVersionUID = 0;
dropping files in windows works perfectly, but not on the mac. what am i doing wrong?
3) table sorting not possible in java 1.5
in java 1.6 (available on windows) i can easily sort tables with: TableRowSorter<FileTableModel> sorter = new TableRowSorter<FileTableModel>();
fileTable.setRowSorter( sorter );
sorter.setModel( fileTableModel );
unfortunately there is no java1.6 on mac, only 1.5. do i need to implement my own sorting algorythm now?
thank you for your help & hints.
robert1. It's been awhile since I've used it, but you might want to check out Apple's [OSXAdapter class|http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/OSXAdapter/index.html] to handle OSX-specific stuff. It provides a means to do Mac-specific stuff (single menubar, Preferences/About in the application menu, etc.). It also supports specifying a "quit" operation, which may be what you're looking for. Best of all, it has a "dynamic" implementation so that you can use it without directly using any Apple-specific Java classes and thus breaking cross-platform compatibility.
3. Check out this for a way to make JTables sortable. -
Old DOS program running in MED-V - WordPerfect 5.0
I'm struggling with getting an old DOS program, WordPerfect 5 to run in MED-V. I've gotten it to laund when running a workspace in Full Desktop but not in a Seamless configuration. Does anyone have any tips on getting older programs to run happily in Seamless

5 year old mac book running slow
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to improve the performance? Or is it just because it is outdated?
Thanks DonnaThe MacBook should be able to run as fast as it did when
new, if it had the original content, system, applications &
had the same amount of free or unused hard disk drive
space compared to used capacity, as when it was new...
And the same internet. Web page content takes longer
and has more stuff to load, so that is slower acting now
since it wasn't as busy some years ago. My Macs are
all older models and run a few versions behind new.
You could check the information on how to look into what
your computer has in it, and get a few ideas on what a
user should do about their accumulated saved content.
A third-party gimmick to cleanup or modify the computer
so you may think it could be faster, is a false economy.
Those usually damage the system and can put adware
or malware into the OS X, so it runs much slower overall.
See what the author of this site says about slow macs...
•Mac Performance Guide - The Safe Mac:
http://www.thesafemac.com/mpg/
Sometimes when visiting web pages with poor content or
quality control, they may not be secure or may allow bad
content to accompany downloads of what may seem OK.
So the problem with adware or bad content arises and
that can be running in the background. To see or try to
identify that kind of thing, you'd have to be interested in
directly acting on it; and not rely on some mackeeper or
other garbage product that won't fix it. A fair look into
ways of removing 'adware' and other issues can be found
in TheSafeMac site. There also is an adware removal tool.
See these other guides at the same home page:
•Tech Guides - The Safe Mac:
http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/
A performance increase may be had by keeping an off-
computer archive of things you want to keep, then delete
or Trash the originals; an externally enclosed hard drive
can be helpful. Such a device also makes a good backup.
Not just one for Time Machine, but another (or two) so
you can choose to make a fully bootable system clone;
w/ utilities such as CarbonCopyCloner or Superduper.
The amount of RAM installed in your computer may be
upgraded, if not already to the maximum, and this is a
way to increase actual performance if you have larger
applications and a later OSX than the Mac shipped with.
What is the total RAM capacity installed in the MacBook?
If your MacBook (13-inch Aluminum Late 2008) is this:
Model Identifier
MacBook5,1
Model Number
A1278
EMC
2254
Then the total upgrade amount of RAM should be this:
Maximum Memory
8.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
Memory Slots
2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
If you were to upgrade the capacity of HDD storage...
Hard Drive Interface
3.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)
...or get an SSD instead, this info is helpful.
{the above, from http://mactracker.ca database, a free download}
More RAM and an upgrade to a solid state drive, could make the MB5.1
scream along OK. However it may not be adequate to run a later OS X
than Mavericks, if you even needed to go there. Some older Macs do
OK with OS X 10.9.3, others act like they'd prefer Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
A few good sources of upgrade hardware can be found through these
mac-centric online vendors, who offer Mac-tested products... Crucial
and macsales (OWC) have sites and upgrade parts. Also information
on how to perform some of the upgrades. iFixit.com has repair guides
that may be helpful to see what one may be up against to upgrade.
So there are a few things to consider, to clear out your saved stuff and
make an external hard drive a home for libraries of music, photo, video
and documents; some libraries can be used directly by their application.
When an application can use files that way, the duplicates in the Mac
can be removed, those Libraries that can be huge need not be internal.
Be sure to read up in the Support database before moving libraries.
There likely is a ton more to know, but it is better to learn about it than
find out something wasn't too hard to know, before an issue arose.
Good luck & happy computing! -

Program running fine in Debug mode but failing in direct execution
Hi All,
I am facing a peculiar problem, I have created a report that create STO then Delivery and then Shipment one after one. I have used BAPI to do so. If STO creation is successful then Create Delivery and if delivery creation is also successfull then create Shipment.
When I run this program by pressing execute button it is only creating STO and coming out ,but if I run it in Debug mode I get all the three( STO, Delivey,Shipment). Since it run fine in debug so I can't found where the problem is.
Can any one help???
Regards
HemantHi guys,
A learning for me .... how important WAIt parmeter is in commit work .. Initially i have not set WAIT paramater in commit BAPI to X due to this further processing.. Delivery and Shipment creation was failing in direct execution ... as after STO creation I was reding EKPO and that was failing in direct execution , but in backgroung everything was ok.
Thanks for your time.
Cheers
