Why do some songs appear on a playlist but not under their artist?

I have a couple songs that will play on the iPod but can't be accessed through their artists. The only way I can access them is under a playlist. For example, I have 4 songs by Fat Boy Slim, 3 of which coming from unknown albums. When I select Fat Boy Slim under the artist menu, it goes straight to the album that the fourth song is under. The songs from unknown albums have to be accessed through the Top Rated playlist. If I select almost any other artist, it will lead me to another menu where I can choose "all" or any of the albums of that artist. The same applies to another artist where ten songs are from one album and one song is from an unknown album; the song with an unknown album will not appear under its artist. The Ipod will just go straight to the album that the ten songs are from. Does anyone else have this problem? How can I fix it? By the way, I have the 30 gig video iPod.

This may be happening because there is no album name for those songs. Since the song with an album title does show up, try naming the albums for the other three songs. They'll probably show up.

  • Why do some songs play properly in iTunes but not on iPod Classic?

Hi all, I have two songs in my library that play all the way through properly when played in Itunes through my Mac, and on my iPhone, and on my iPod, but not when played on my iPod Classic 80GB.  That seems weird to me ... can anyone offer me some suggestions as to what's going on and how I might fix it?  Thanks in advance.

What format are these two tracks in and at what bitrate are they encoded?  Are they downloads from the iTunes Store or were these tracks that you were imported from outside of iTunes?

  • Why do some emails appear in Intenet Explorer but not on Firefox?

My friend sent an email using a program in which she used her handwriting for the fonts. The email appears clearly when I use Internet Explorer but all that arrives when I use Firefox is a blank page although her name appears in the Inbox. I can't open some emails that require media player, either.

  • Songs appear in "Album" view but not "Playlist" view--sync problem

I sync/drag songs from iTunes to my iPod manually. One album in particular shows up on my iPod when I view the list of songs by "Album," but when I view the list of songs by my Beatles "Playlist", songs from all albums except one show up.
For instance... in "Album"view (on my iPod), I see "Abbey Road" with all its tracks. I also see "Let It Be" with all its tracks. BUT, when I switch over to the Beatles "Playlist,", I see all the tracks from "Abbey Road" but NO tracks from "Let It Be."
So the only way for me to listen to the tracks from "Let It Be" is to play the Album. If I play the Beatles playlist, none of the "Let It Be" songs will play.
    Can someone help?
By the way, my iTunes version is 7.6, and my iPods version is 1.2.3---- so both apps are up to date.

The first and easiest troubleshooting step involves replacing/refreshing the com.apple.iCal.plist file.
Quit iCal and find the com.apple.iCal.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Drag the file to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check iCal for normal behavior.

  • Song goes in one playlist but not another

I am in the process of using ITunes Match. Close to half my songs are in the icloud now. One of my newer  songs was recently matched, shows that it was matched,  and is supposedly now in icloud. I dragged that song into one of my ITunes playlists with no problem. But then I dragged the same song into 2 other ITunes  playlists. Those 2 other playlists now show a cloud next to it (to the right of the name of the playlist),  with a diagonal line from left to right in the cloud. I think that symbol means that  the song is ineligible. But the song was shown to have matched to iCloud,  and went OK into  one of the playlists.  The song itself does not have an inelgible cloud or any cloud symbol next to it. Does the ineligible cloud symbol next to the names of the 2 playlists mean that the playlists are no longer in icloud? The ineligible symbol was not next to the song, it was next to the name of the playlist.
I then went into those 2 other playlists and received a message that those 2 playlists have entries that are not music, but are other media types (although I did not see other media types there). And that these 2 playlists are no longer in icloud.  I don't understand this.  The 2 playlists seem to only have musical songs, not other media.  And  I did not receive that message until after I put this new song in the playlists. The 2 playlists  seemed to be OK before I put this new song in. So it seems this song was OK going into one playlist, but was deemed not OK later when it went into the other 2 playlists. I thinkk that those 2 other playlists were eliminated from iCloud because I put this new song in them.
Why did this happen? What can I do?  Looks like I lost 2 playlists from iCloud.  Can I resurrect them?
I have Mac OS Mountain Lion 10.8.2  and I have ITunes 10.

If you use standard playlists iTunes Match normally works very well.  Do expect erratic results with Smart Playlists.
Would suggest you simply try building new standard playlists - it is quick and they can always be removed if the result is not what you want.

  • Why do some songs appear in gray on iPhone?

I purchased Match, thinking it was a great idea, so that I coupld consolidate all my music libraries, and so have access to all my music from any of my devices.
Mistake. Match capriciously shows songs on my iPhone—sometimes the album is there, sometimes it ain't.
So I turned off Match on both my computer and my iPhone, then resynched my iPhone.
However, now, songs that I have on the iPhone appear in gray—and don't play.
Match *****—and the sad part is, it's a great idea. Who wouldn't want one place where all your songs are stored, so you can play any of them on any device. It's not just a great idea—it's an excellent idea.
But the execution is terrible. The user interface is perfectly fine—it's the "beneath the hood" issues: Albums appearing and then disappearing at random; the interminable upload process (I have a mere 2,400 songs, and it took more than a day, even with high-speed intenet); playlists appearing empty on the devices; etc.
I doubt if Steve Jobs would have let such a bad product go out into the world. Shame on you, Tim Cook.

More details. On what device do you see the cloud icon; what "songs list" are you refering to?

  • Why do songs appear in itunes match but not play?

Ive got loads of duplicate song titles appearing in Song list in Music on iPad, but only one plays of the duplicates 'works'. The other is phantom, and causes continuous play to stall. Solutions please.
BTW I've tuned Match off on my devices as it is more hassle than it is worth.

Do you mean that the songs are being skipped by your devices when iTunes Match is on? Cause I believe I am having the same issue. Turning off iTunes Match and reloading all the music back on your devices from scratch fixes that, until you turn back on iTunes Match and the problem results again.
Doesn't appear to be a permanent fix. I've been looking.

  • Why does some artwork embed into the file, but not others?

    Hey everyone.
I'm running iTunes 11.3.1. I'm incredibly obsessive about having organised files and one thing in particular I want is album artwork embedded into the music file itself, not just on iTunes. The problem I have is that the artwork will embed for some, and not for others - even if I use the exact same methods:
I use the following for getting HQ covers: http://bendodson.com/code/itunes-artwork-finder/index.html
I will then click on the high resolution version, copy it to clipboard, command-i to get info of the individual tracks and manually paste the cover into every track on the album. When I then go into Finder to see if it has embedded, I find that for one album it has worked perfectly; but although I use the exact same method, it won't work for another album even if they're exactly the same file type.
(I know I can save myself time and select all the tracks, command-i and paste the artwork to do it in one go - but I find I get just as much of a mixed bag. I.e. sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.)
I am literally at the end of my tether and I can't figure out what I need to do differently, any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have encountered exactly the same problem and frustration :-)
Although I can't offer a definitive reason why, I did notice that the problem tracks typically had a higher resolution image attached in iTunes. I have used Preview to reduce the resolution to 600 x 600 (standard iTunes size) and it worked.
Now, I have no idea if it was the resolution or the fact that I was re-saving a fresh version of the JPG (which may have stripped out whatever was causing the problem), but the process of tweaking the file to 600 x 600 and re-saving has worked for me.

  • Why do some radio buttons show in IE but not in Firefox?

On some web sites a radio button or checkbox is available but Firefox does not show any outline or content for it. It can only be found by mousing over the screen and hoping that a text message such as "Click here to submit" shows up. In IE these buttons do show up in the normal way so it seems this is s problem with Firefox and not the particular web site.

  • After changing laptops, i am unable to add songs into my iPhone 4. The song appears in the library but not in the device. Help!

I have not been able to add songs into my iPhone after switching computers. The mp3 format of these current songs are in the old laptop and i am unabe to retrieve them. In the new laptop, i am unable to add songs to my device, only to the iTunes library.

Best route here is to focus initially solely on the iTunes Library.  Once it has all the Songs that you want, turn off iTunes Match, sign out of iTunes Store and restart the computer from cold.
Moving to the iPhone would suggest a restore and fresh link to the library post the following steps.
    1.  Sign in to iTunes Store;
    2.  Turn on iTunes Match - allow 3-step process to run to completion;
    3.  Make secure backup of library;
    4.  Force iPhone in to restore mode - hold down 'power on/off' with 'home key' for 10 seconds
    5.  Attach iPhone via USB to computer and follow 'restore' instructions in iTunes
    6.  Once complete synchronise with library as required
At this stage all required Songs should be on the iPhone - post iPhone back-up a good point to fully enable iTunes Match on the iPhone if required.

  • Songs showing up in songlist but not under artists on ipod

when going to pick songs. i can go to the songlist and pick the songs but when going under artists menu they are not there. does anyone know what the problem may be. thanks

This isn't foolproof but there are usually two things that contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song is marked as part of a compilation or 2) it is missing an album name.
If the tracks are ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. Highlight a song in iTunes that you know is not appearing correctly on your iPod. Right click on it and choose Get Info and click the Info tab (alternatively choose Get Info from the File menu), if "Part of a Compilation" is marked untick it and afterwards update your iPod, you should find it now appears as normal. Compilations are stored in a separate folder in iTunes so the songs don't appear inside the normal Artist>Album folder which may be why this happens.
Also if tracks are missing an Album name in the Info tab, this information needs to be filled in. The no album one is a bit quirky as the songs will appear under certain circumstances but the simplest remedy is just add None or Miscellaneous in place of a title. See this link for more detail: I don't see some of my songs when browsing by artist on my iPod

  • Files seen under Explorer but not under Music; making playlists outside Music

My Zen Touch 2 sees some files only in the explorer but not under Music > Songs. I.e. I load an album into the right folder and Zen sees only the fourth, fifth etc. track under Music while seeing all under Explorer. As I can add songs to playlists only under Music, this effecti'vely blocks me from listening, What`s the... ehm, problem? Why can`t this piece of plastic see all the files?
And second: Maybe there is a nicer way of making playlists than one by one in the device? I`ve heard some hardware Mp3/4 players cana ccept external playlists, but the help doesn`t mention this.

QThanks but as this changes even within an album (tracks -3 not seen, later ones yes) I don`t think it is the problem of tags exclusi'vely. BTW, maybe there`s some way of making the Music window (program? folder?) display file names instead tags?
Thanks for the playlist answer. Now`s just the problem of finding where WMP keeps them
