Why do the three ethernet port green lights go out?

At random times my 802.11n (gigabit) AEBS seems to get very confused and I have to power cycle it. I noticed that one indication of things amiss is the fact that the 3 ethernet port status lights are out. Anyone know why that would happen?

I don't know, but I have the Airport Extreme with Gigabit ethernet, and I notice that the ethernet ports' lights go out whenever I make changes to the base station (ex. if I change port mappings). So after it reboots, that's when the lights go out. Everything seems to work fine after that though, even though the lights are out. The indicator light on the front is always on though.
Another member, Akislot, posted a similar problem in the following thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5748864
So we are not alone, but I wonder if this issue is normal. I have tried both the soft reset and hard reset, and I have also reinstalled the firmware to the latest version (7.2.1). The issue still persists, and power-cycling allows the ethernet lights to return. Sometimes attempting to change the port mappings allows the lights to return, but not always. Power-cycling always allows the lights to return.
I just bought this 2 days ago too, so it is brand new.
If I still cannot find information online today, I think I will contact AppleCare. Does anyone know anything about this? Please let us know if you do. Thanks so much!
Cya!

  • Why does it take me so many tries before I can get the amber and/ or green light to come on, on my MagSafe power adapter?

I have been having a problem for a little while now, and I have decided to overlook it for the most part. However, it is really starting to get on my nerves. The issue I don't believe is with the MacBook Pro itself, however with the MagSafe power adapter. The adapter itself is in great condition, it is brand new, but when I attach it to the computer, the computer reads that it is there, as it shows it is charging or is charged as shown by the battery indicator in the top right of the OS X toolbar. However, the amber and/ or green light doesn't come on, right away - the first time - most of the time, on the adapter head itself. I usually have to unplug it and plug it back in multiple times before I get a light to come on. I have tried to clean the adapter itself, and the MagSafe port on the computer, but that seems to only help for a short amount of time, and it doesn't look real dirty, or like any pins are stuck on the adapter. I have also tried other outlets, but that doesn't seem to help, so I don't think I am getting dirty power.

Unfortunately, it *could* be the computer. And it could be the adapter.  Aside from trying Resetting the System Management Controller there's not much you can do except taking it in for testing.

  • I need to tell Print services to use the 2nd ethernet port

I need to tell Print services to use the 2nd ethernet port
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light. My research has led me to a dead-end so far. Running 10.3.9 on my server. XServe Dual 2.3
I want to have File services and the various other duties pushed through one ethernet port, and print services on the other. I know there is probably a config file to make one simple edit, but I can not find it, or perhaps a "defaults" type command.
Also, where is this "command-line administration guide" that I keep running across on Apple's support?
    Thanks in advance.

Similar issue here too. Is it the subnet? Basically, I'm having a problem printing to an AirportExpress-served printer. Our network looks like this:
    (From Outside...>>>...to Inside)
    (Public IP) DSL Modem
    ...(10.0.0.x) Airport Express -- HP DesignJet 100 USB -- Airtunes/stereo
    ...(10.0.0.x) NetGear Wireless Router
    ...(10.0.0.x nic 0) Mac OS X Server (192.168.0.x nic1)
    ......(192.168.0.x) Mac OS X client
    ......(192.168.0.x) Mac OS X client
    ......(192.168.0.x) Mac OS X client
The printer driver does not appear to be able to do IP printing, it assumes a direct USB connection. We can setup the OS X Server with the printer served by the Airport Express, as it is found via Bonjour, and then we share its queue via Server Admin. The problem is that the LAN clients cannot print to this server queue. The printer gets stopped at the server.
If we turn OFF the OS X Server's firewall, printing works from both the clients and obviously from the Server. I think my question is this: what ports or services need to be turned on in order for the clients to print? There is no clear checkbox for "Bonjour Printer Sharing", and I'm curious what ports this would open, and if it would be safe. I thought it would work because we're pushing the print job up through the firewall, but apparently some response needs to come back through the firewall, and that's what's not happening.
And to tack onto this, how could we also push iTunes to the Airport Express from the Clients? Assuming the music goes over different ports than the print jobs. ?
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • How do you make use of the 2nd Ethernet port on the Mac Pro?

My Mac Pro's ethernet port connects it to the local network and the internet.
Under what circumstances would I make use of the 2nd port?
Are there any settings I'd have to set up in system preferences to make sure one is used for some things while the other is used for different things?
I'm asking because we might be making some changes to our network. We have a printer with a Fiery RIP and I'm pretty much the only one who prints to it. I was wondering if we could/should set up a direct, dedicated connection so that network traffic won't bog down print jobs.

The main use for that port today is to create a subnetwork for Internet Sharing. Software inside the Mac can act as a Router and provides new DHCP Addresses for the subnetwork. In general, the devices on the subnetwork would be inaccessible from anywhere else, due to Network Address Translation.
If you are concerned about heavy network traffic, consider upgrading your Switches (not Routers) to Gigabit Ethernet speeds and using Jumbo frames. (Routers are not involved in peer-to-peer transfers such as Printing when no Address Translation is involved.)
If you have an Industrial Router, you can combine the two Ethernet ports into one composite link for faster-than-Gigabit effective speeds, but it requires a special Router not generally available.

(Over time, Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD."  Regardless of the name of your Mac's built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)

  • Why does the same RGB color appear lighter in one ai file and darker in another?

Why does the same RGB color appear lighter in one ai file and darker in another??  I want to use the more vibrant color, but when I try to reproduce the same RGB color code in another Adobe Illustrator (ai) file, it shows up darker.  I printed the two files out, and you can see the difference in the print too.  I exported the color orginally as an eps file from an ArcGIS map.
    Any insight is greatly appreciated!
    Anne

You illustrator files may have different color profiles attached.
Set to show your color profile in the bottom left of each document by using the flyout menu >> show >> document color profile
Then you can use edit >> assign profile to get them the same
Yours are quite far off for RGB (which are usually close to each other for many profile due to wide gamut).  I question as Jacob did if one of your documents are in CMYK mode. Look in parenthesis after the document name at top of window.
Check if view > proof setup is the same (do not use the uncoated profile as in my screenshot, that was only there cause of my testing)
Make sure view >> proofs colors is checked or unchecked for both.
To get them to print the same, check these settings are the same
Sorry for all the screenshots, but hopefully one day we will see Adobe's complex color management united all in one window.

Why is the sound of my new ipad cutting out intermittently and what does Apple recommend to solve the problem in lieu of any updates? All of a sudden without changing any settings, the audio on my NEW ipad cuts in and out on applications/ games, keypad noise and lock sounds. The rocker button only seems to work while the sound is intermittently being heard before, after a few seconds of noise not doing anything when sound goes off.
This is highly frustrating as I've noticed others posting about such issues as far back as April. Anybody had the same thing happen to them? Is this likely software (ios6) or hardware issue? What are the solutions Apple???

Apple has no physical stores of their own in Dubai, so unless you mean that you purchased from the online Apple Store for the UAE, you purchased from a dealer, who may or may not have been authorized. You can check the expiration date of the warranty on your iPad yourself by entering in the serial number here:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
If it does indeed show the warranty has expired, then what you need to do from here will depend on who you purchased the iPad from and when you really did purchase it. Perhaps you actually purchased it in August and are just misremembering? Check your receipt. If you confirm that you did purchase within the last calendar year, tell us exactly where you got it and we can probably offer advice.
    Regards.

Why is the check box for remember passwords grayed out? It used to work now it won't save them.

It could be because you have Firefox set to not remember any history. Did you do that intentionally? It is set in the Options dialog:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Privacy
Perhaps it would work if you choose "Use custom settings for history" and just turn off the specific things you want to turn off.

  • Apple Aluminium Wireless Keyboard - Bluetooth setup sees the keyboard but then green light flashes and it won't pair

I am desperately hoping someone can help me out here...
I have a 1st generation aluminium Apple Wireless Keyboard — the one that needs three batteries, as opposed to two — and it refuses to pair with any of my three Macs.
I was originally using it — for a few years — on an old G4 Mac Mini running Tiger then later on, Leopard.
I recently sold the Mini but in the days leading up to the sale some strange things were happening with the keyboard ...the number '7' key became non-responsive 90% of the time and the Keyboard Viewer app showed it as being constantly pressed down. Every other key was working 100% ok.
Fast forward a few days after the sale of my Mini: Now when I try to connect the keyboard to any of my other Macs, the Bluetooth Setup sees the keyboard no problem at all but when I click 'Continue' to go the the pairing stage, the process just keeps failing!
Whenever I turn my keyboard on I get the expected solid green light for two or three seconds, but after that the keyboard's green light keeps repeatedly blinking until I turn the keyboard off again.
I did notice that the Bluetooth Setup will only ever see the keyboard in those first few seconds when the light is a solid green ...if I wait until the lights starts blinking and then start up the Bluetooth Setup, it does not see the keyboard at all.
If anyone can shed any light on this, I would be enternally grateful!!!! ...especially as I was recently made redundant — that's 'Laid-off' for any Americans reading this! — and I would rather not have to buy yet another expensive Apple keyboard when I'm jobless and really should not have to!!!
I read about a lot of people who's Macs sinply don't see their keyboard, but it's extra frustrating for me as my Macs do see the keyboard but won't bloody well pair with it!
Thanks again to anyone taking the time to read this!

The keyboard and mouse should have come from the factory already paired to the Mac. But if it didn't see this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1809

  • "You are not connected to the internet"  with a green light on Airport

Using airport extreme with my MacBook, The airport shows a steady green light, but I cannot connect to the internet and my Safari shows "You are not connected to the internet".
I tried getting a direct connection, but didn't work, I will be taking my MacBook to have it checked tomorrow.
I called my ISP, thought had to do with my DSL modem, but it works fine with a direct connection to the PC.
I have my network checked with a check mark beside it.
    Any help?

For future references, I have come to solve my own problem and I'm now on line.
After I reset my DSL modem, I went into my System Preferences, Network, then Sharing.
Clicked on Internet tab, and chose " Share your connection using Airport".
In my Airport Options, I checked the inputs to make sure the settings match.
And viola, I'm online and 2 floors away from my Airport Extreme.
Hope this comes in handy for future users.
I'm still going to get my Ethernet card checked tomorrow.

  • How do I add an airport extreme to existing time capsule network and be able to use the router ethernet ports?

Good day everyone.  I recently upgraded my airport extreme network by replacing the base station with a time capsule router.  Since I now have an "extra" airport extreme router, I've set it up on the other side of the house to both extend the wireless range as well as use it's LAN ports for a home theater system in that location.  Connecting the two routers was done via ethernet.  It now appears that I need to do something "else" as the LAN ports on the now relocated airport extreme are nonfunctional.  All devices are operating well for wireless and as a review, the modem is connected to the time capsule WAN which is connected to the airport extreme via ethernet cable via LAN to it's WAN port.  What do I need to change on configurations to get the LAN ports functioning on the airport extreme?  Thank you for any help.

With both base stations interconnected by Ethernet you have the basis for a "roaming" type network. If properly configured, both base stations' Ethernet ports would be enabled for wired clients.
The key configuration items for a roaming network are as follows:
All base stations used must be interconnected by Ethernet.
The "main" base station; the one connected to the Internet modem, must be configured to provide both NAT & DHCP services; all other base stations used must be configured as bridges (NAT & DHCP disabled.)
Each base station must have a unique base station name.
Each base station must use the same wireless security type and password.

  • Why are the two firewire ports on the back of my iMac diffferent?

I currently have an external hard drive plugged in to one firewire port. But I noticed that I cannot fit my iPod connector into the other firewire port.
    Why?
    Intel-Based iMac 24" Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Look at this article iMac (Late 2006): External Ports and Connectors and go down to:
    "Two FireWire Ports"
The iMac (24-inch) has one FireWire 400 port, and one FireWire 800 (IEEE 1394b) port, which supports transfer rates of 100, 200, 400, and 800 Mbps as a theoretical maximum load; actual rates may vary.
If your External HD has a second firewire port on it, connect the firewire iPod there. If not I would pick-up a firewire hub to prevent having to plug and unplug cords.
