Why do the thumbnails in a clip need to repeat themselves in the timeline?

I'm confused about something.  When I drop a clip into the timeline, if I want the video and audio to show then the thumbnail for the clip basically repeats itself for the length of the clip in the timeline.  In FCP 7 when a clip is dropped in the timeline there is one thumbnail on the left and then just the length of the clip.
It is very hard to see clip separation in the timeline if it's a constanst stream of thumbnails - anyway to turn this off???

Tom, you seem a little negative - just an observation from someone who is knew to this board.  I'm just trying to get an understanding of a new application.  I of course, am only working from my knowledge of FCP 7.  I've worked in FCP since 2002 so I'm very aware of FCP 7.  I'm not trying to make FCP X into 7 but I am wondering how some of the SIMPLE things that were able to be achieved in FCP 7 seem so complex (and maybe not even possible) in FCP X...
The thumbnails don't NEED to repeat themselves, it's silly.  I've played with the settings at the lightswitch and none of them controls the amount of thumbnails that are displayed.  Having all those thumbnails makes it VERY hard to see clip separation.  If you call that trying to fit FCP X into FCP 7 then so be it, but it seems pretty logical to me to ask for this option...
Hope you're having a lovely day!

  • Why is the timeline numbering scheme wrong

I have zoomed in on a particular video and noticed as I zoom in the timeline numbering is not correct.   Here is a screen shot showing the issue:
In case you cannot see the numers the read as follows:
    00;00;26;00
    00;00;26;15
    00;00;27;00
    00;00;27;15
    00;00;28;00
    00;00;28;15
This is what I would expect the timeline to read:
    00;00;26;00
    00;00;26;50
    00;00;27;00
    00;00;27;50
    00;00;28;00
    00;00;28;50
If I zoom in further then the problem gets worse.  Has anyone else run into this.
    kfitz

    Kevin,
That is what I would expect with regards to TimeCode. For SMPT TimeCode, one has 00 (hrs.); 00 (min.); 00 (sec,); 00 (frames). As Neale points out, the 15 Frames is 1/2 of a second at 30 FPS, for NTSC. Those intermediate numbers would be 12 for PAL (in reality, halfway would be 12.5, but we cannot have half Frames in Video.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Why is the timeline set to -1?

    Hi there,
I have a stage with lots of symbols on, all with their own timelines set to play upon click. When previewing in the browser I notice it takes two clicks to get the timeline going. When I query with a console.log command the console tells me that the timeline begins at -1, so my command (which is an if\else telling to play if timeline = 0) doesnt work. Another then click finds the timeline at zero, as if it had been jogged on a bit.
    Has anyone else seen this?
    Thanks

    getPosition();
Description: Returns the current playhead position of the default timeline. Returns -1 if the timeline has never been played.

  • Why does an iPhone 6  60p clip need rate conversion?

When I take clips with an iPhone 6+, they are supposedly taken in 60p (if enabled in "Settings"). When I import such a clip to FCP, it is reported as 60i. I also see this with every other high-res clips, such as the ones taken from a Sony RX-100: They show as 50i, but are 50p.
(Sorry, the labels are in German.)
I manually set the field dominance to "progressive", because that's what it is.
You may notice the strange dimension: iOS 8.0 had a bug that sometimes locked the direction sensor. This particular clip was shot with the bug active. The phone was held horizontally, but the clip is marked as having been recorded vertically.
    The project (timeline) is 60p:
Now comes the tricky part: Every clip from the iPhone requires a rate conversion:
Why is this the case? Both clip and timeline are 60fps.
The same does not happen with a 50p timeline and 50"i" material from the Sony RX100.

I have a Verizon Wireless phone so there is no SIM card. I did call apple and they had me restore it in DFU mode. It still pops up as activation required at least once a day.

  • Why do I need to render an imported clip in the timeline to view it??

I can't figure this out.I have used FCP 3 many times before but now I have imported an H264.mp4 clip into my timeline using FCP 4.5. Now I have to render it to watch it in the timeline? It appears that I have to render any clips I import into the timeline including .mov files.
Is this a FCP 4.5 thing?
    I am operating a Dual 867 G4 with 2 gigs of Ram. 10.4.6 OS.
It will take forever to render this project as it is Hours of HD footage.
Thanks so much for any help.
Never had this issue with non HD footage using FCP 3.
    G4 dual 867, 2 gig Ram Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Format: H.264 Decoder,368 x 208,Millions
    AAC, Stereo(L R).44.100 kHz
    23.98
You're dimensions are 368x208? Never seen that size (though, I'm sure there are a multitude of sizes I haven't seen). Did you specify those dimensions in HandBrake or were they default? Did you set those dimensions in your sequence? Look at all of your columns in the browser in regards to the clip properties; enter all of those into the sequence settings. This may be wrong, but I would even specify H.264 as the compressor.
Also, you said "HD footage", but you ripped it off a DVD. Was it a video DVD, or a data disc? If it was video, I believe it would have been compressed and down-rez'd already to SD, so it shouldn't really be HD footage anymore (not native anyway...unless it was a HD-DVD).
Looking to maybe export H.264.mov as another format
using Quicktime Pro. Think that will help?
You could do this, I believe, but it may not be necessary.

  • Why is the Video clip jumpy?

Why is the Video clip jumpy? I have just installed Premiere Elements 12 in a brand new computer:
    Acer Aspire V5
CPU AMD Dual Core Processor a-4 APU with Radeon (TM HD Graphics 1.0 GHz)
    4GB DDR3 memory
    500 GB HDD
    Windows 8.1
The file types are AVI, AVCHD, and MOV files

    northgal
Lots of ways to go on this. But, I think starting with a definition of the source media and how you are setting up the project is going to be the path to success. So, we need to zero in on questions/answers related to what I wrote earlier
The properties of the source media need expanding up beyond "file types are AVI, AVCHD, and MOV.
    a. What are the video and audio compression of the files with the .avi file extension and what is the frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, pixel aspect ratio?
    b. What is the file extension for the file with the AVCHD video compression. Again, what is the frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, pixel aspect ratio?
    c. What are the video and audio compression of the files with the .mov file extension and what is the frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, pixel aspect ratio?
You asked how to go about that. The best way is to run each of the file types through a video properties read out program such as MediaInfo
    http://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
Latest versions of that MediaInfo have been problematic in that you need to be on guard for any unwanted toolbars and installed "extra" programs (bloatware).
    OR
We would not necessarily get more information, but we would get enough to put us in a good position, if we run the types through gspot utility (good for codec and basic information)...less bloatware concerns
    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
The dialog that you would get from gspot would look like
Once we know the video and audio codecs, frame size, frames rates, interlaced or progressive frame rates, etc. that we are dealing with, we on a good course to set up the project settings to match those properties, independant of whatever export choices we have in mind. That we will address later after a successful import and edit.
    OR
A third choice for getting at this information is less productive but can be a good last resort...knowing the brand/model/recording settings of the camera from which these files came.
Please review and then let us know if you can gather the file properties information details requested.
We will be watching for your results.
    Thank you.

  • Why is the music clip marked with a yellow warning sign?

While browsing my project library today, I noticed that every music clip associated with a particular project is marked with a yellow "warning" triangle (with an exclamation point in the center). What's worse, the music won't play.
I had previously uploaded this video to YouTube, where it now plays just fine. But I'm still puzzled by the warning sign, and by the fact that the music won't play when I take a look at it in my Project Library.
I've never had a warning sign like this emerge in connection with anything else I've put together with iMovie. Why is it there, and why are the music clips inoperative? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi !
I have a question. I had that little warning sign as well but in the clip I had just imported into the event library... I don't understand because when I went to the folder in which iMovie copies the clips I import, it was right there. Same name, same size, same runtime... and it played perfectly; and I could preview the clip in iMovie. But the thumbnail was gray with that little sign. Also, I couldn't delete the clip from my library.
I closed iMovie, started it again... the clip is in the library, no more gray thumbnail and little yellow sign.
    How is that possible ?!

  • Why do ALL of my clips need to be rendered??

    Hi.
I just captured a mess o' clips and when I drag them to the timeline I get the dreaded red line up top. Why? Why does all of my footage need to be rendered? I haven't added any effects at all.
    FCP 5.1
    MBP 2.16
    OS X.4.6
Thanks for any advice that you may have for me.
    Tom

Because your sequence and clip settings don't match. Often, this results from changing the Easy Setup AFTER creating a new project. The new project creates a new sequence, which is then in the old preset.
After selecting the desired Easy Setup, create a new sequence and edit your clips into that sequence, and you should be Good to Go.

  • Why do the youtube clips not expand properly when I double click on the page

why do the youtube clips not expand properly when I double click on the page

The exclamation mark is telling you that iPhoto has broken the file path/link to the original file. Assuming you're using iPhoto 9 or later Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • When I import a Quick Time movie into the timeline using Final Cut Express, why does it need rendering?

when I import a Quick Time movie into the timeline using Final Cut Express, why does it need rendering?

Because your clip properties do not match your sequence settings.
It will help a lot if you provide details ...
    FCE Easy Setup
Sequence settings (vid rate, frame size, compressor)
Source of your clips (camcorder make/model, etc)
Clip properties (vid rate, frame size, compressor)

  • Why can you no longer see audio clip names in the timeline in CC?

This is very frustrating, so I'm hoping there's a solution. I need to be able to read audio file names within the timeline...especially music clips. Why would they remove this feature? Is there a way to get it back? And while I'm at it, why do you now have to expand the timeline tracks to be able to read the the track names? (I label all of my track names, but obviously don't want them all expanded just to be able to read what I labeled each track...that would be one fluster cluck of a timeline since I have a minimum of 10 audio tracks at all times!)
Thanks for any help on this issue! I just switched to CC v.8 yesterday and am trying to work out all the kinks.

Hit the wrench in the timeline and check Show Audio Names.

  • Why do I want bookmarks from other clips to remain in the timeline?

    Hi,
I've been using iMovie for about a year now and am finally bothering to write in about this. Most of what I use iMove for are music video compilations so I have a bunch of clips that I work on. I trim them, combine them and then make a DVD (with iDVD). My question is, why does iMovie leave the bookmarks from the/all previous clip(s) in the timeline unless I delete them? Why would I (anyone?) want bookmarks from one clip to be there (in the timeline) when I am working on another clip? I take each clip out of the timeline and put it back in the clip window until I am ready to assemble them all, working on them one at a time. The bookmarks remain after I've worked on each on so have to I delete ALL each time. Why would I/anyone want them to stay? (Perhaps they appear in the correct place in the timeline if I keep adding clips but I think, and since I don't do this I may be wrong, that they don't. They certainly don't appear in the correct places when I put other clips in the time line. How could they when I haven't decided where I want the bookmarks to be in the new clips?)
Also, when I do an edit (crop), the bookmarks remain in their places (x frames in for example) even though I have shortened the movie. Shouldn't they adjust and in the case of cropping off some of the beignning, shouldn't they then be right at the beginning if that is where I had marked so I could crop it? I don't understand.
Thanks for any help. I'm using iMovie 5.0.2.
    Cheers,
    John L

My question is, why does iMovie leave the bookmarks from the/all previous
clip(s) in the timeline unless I delete them?
Bookmarks are an editing tool that we create as needed, keep in the Timeline for as long as useful, then discard, one at a time or all together. They are generally discarded when no longer needed.
(I feel Bookmarks are one of iMovie's most useful features, especially when iMovie preferences are set to Snap to items in the Timeline, and snap with audio. Bookmarks greatly simplify editing.)
Personally, I wouldn't want iMovie to decide for me when to discard my Bookmarks, any more than I want iMovie to discard clips or chapters. iMovie isn't very good at reading my mind, so I prefer to make those decisions.
When the current editing task is done, I tell iMovie to discard all the Bookmarks, usually just to clear the table.
The whole point of Bookmarks is to mark a point in the project, not mark a point in a clip. It's not meant to move as you move that clip or others.
You might create a Bookmark to use Direct Trimming to trim a clip to that point, for example, or place a new clip there, or insert a temporary "Black" clip as a placeholder.
You might create a Bookmark to mark the beat of the music in an audio track, for example, the spots you want to sync clips to. As in:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=607322&ft=y&#607322
Generally, you create a Bookmark to define a spot you'll use later. Whatever content you edit will move/adjust/fit to the Bookmark, not the other way around.
    Does this make sense?

    1. Close all inactive apps in the Task Bar. Double-click the Home button and hold apps down for a second or two and tap the minus sign to close app.
    2. Try a reset. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple Logo

  • Why is the view of the clip different then the view of the project?

why is the view of the clip different then the view of the project?

Yes you are correct, it is with the setting of the properties.
Where do i report this then if it is not with the SDK but the manual setting of properties.
Also, how do i alter this ussue with the SDK, what are the commands, does it have to be done only by Javascript?

  • Help: all my capturing clips need to be rendered. why?

I have successfully captured all my video clips from mini dv tapes in a Canon XM1 into final cut pro 4. However if i place any of these clips onto the timeline they need rendering before they will play. This has never happened before, usually only transitions etc need rendering. what have i done wrong? please please help, this is very urgent!

yes it does (your sequence settings are diffrent from your clip settings)
you'll have to open all your clips, and set them to zero -there is a quicker way in your sequence settings, but I'm not to sure wihch setting to go for.
Actually... you'de probably be better off trying to chance the sequence setting to match your clip setting - go to: sequence/settings and play around there.
let me know how you get on. I'm going to see if I can get the correct setting figured out for you to
