Why do these PDFs disappear?

In the past I've never had anyone tell me a PDF I sent was not visible in an email. Now they do tell me that on this project.
Probably most were sent to Mac users, but I don't think all were.
I create a PDF in InDesign CS4. A one page doc, mostly type. These PDF specs:
    (High quality print) (modified)
     Standard: None
     Compatibility: Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4)
     Optimize for fast web view
     Created tagged PDF
     View PDF after exporting
     Hyperlinks
In the past where I had no problem with people seeing the PDF, all PDFs were sent using Entourage.
Now I am testing the sending of them using Apple Mail. It gives me two choices: to "Send Windows Friendly Attachments" or not to check that off. I tried it both ways. I've also tried it with two different PDF files, one created in CS 3. Same results.
The reason I'm using Mail (or hope to) is that in Mail I can design the page so I can have text followed by a PDF followed by text. Whereas in Entourage the PDF always goes to the bottom of the page, the last item, which is what I do NOT want.
How can I solve the problem of the disappearing PDF files? Is the answer in the specs?
Thank yu.

stop trying to put the PDF into the body of the message. 90% of the email
users out there probably won't see it
That kinda leaves me high and dry. Maybe if I tell you what I am trying to
accomplish you will have a suggestion or -- something? -- .
I have email addresses for a number of writers' agents or producers etc.
Instead of the usual query letter, I have designed query pages, in InDesign,
for each of two screenplays. I want them to SEE the PDF of the page I am
attaching to the otherwise very brief email.
The desired format is
Hello -- opening -- a line or two
    PDF big image or .png
    Good-bye -- closing -- name and address.
And I want them to see the PDF without having to open the attachment, which
most won't bother to do.
I have never before found that PDFs were not seen but that is now happening.
Is there a way, using either Entourage or Mail, to send RELIABLE PDFs?
Or:
Might it be better for me to take a screenshot of the page in InDesign and
might that be more universally useful (useful meaning, they see it)? Using
Command-Shift-4, it comes up, looking sharp enough, as a .png file. I also
have Grab. Would one of those be better?
Thank you. I really do want to solve this, not give up!

  • Why are my pdfs disappearing

I'm downloading PDF files via Safari , opening in ibooks, and its all good for a day or so, then any PDF downloaded or opened from another app such as Google Drive just disappears!   All other content is fine, its just PDF's....any ideas?

Just throwing this in the mix. My contacts had disappeared as well a couple of days ago. Very upsetting. I tried a couple of things with no effect. This morning I turned my 4s iphone off, turned it back on. Went to contacts and with no contacts showing as before, I decided i would try adding a new one. I created a contact by the name of test, and saved without further info added and all my contacts came back. Don't know why but that's what happened. Good luck.
P.S. Come on Apple get the fix out on this, between the music app that doesn't play and the contacts disappearing, you're freaking us out.

  • Why did my PDFs disappear when I updated to iBooks 3 on my iPad 1?

I only had a handful of regular books from the bookstore, but I had *a lot* of PDF software manuals, camera manuals, etc sorted and organized in my library as well. I found the books under "purchased", but the PDFs are gone with the wind. Trust me, I never deleted them. I use them fairly regularly, or at least I did until now. When the iBooks update came through, there was nothing that said I needed to backup everything first. I thought it was just another app update. What the frack?

I have PDF files in iBooks as well but didn't lose any during the update.
Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off".

  • Image in the pdf disappears after importing the pdf in adobe lcd

    1. We are generating certain pdf's from pdf lib (These pdf are also having image ). But, when we open the same pdf in Adobe LCD, the image      disappears.Instead of that, we see an empty box.
    2. When we import any pdf (having image )into Adobe LiveCycle designer, the image object is there, but there is no image in it. i.e image data is not there.
Need help to resolve this issue. Kindly assist ASAP .

Embed image is done on Object>>Draw tab to make it visible use Shift+F7 if it is not visible already.
    >>[Gaurav] is it at time of PDF generation ? If so, why are we not able to see image for any other general PDF ?
at original design time the image object may have been defined as imageField item rather than just image item.
As I specified in my previous response it is ok to reassign the images as you intend to make some changes to the forms any way. Though it is additional task it works for your situation.
If you think it is ok to forward copy of PDF you have trouble with I can check the behavior on my machine.....you can forward me at n_varma(AT)lycos.com

  • HTML component with PDF disappears on rotate/scale

I have a PDF loading into an <mx:HTML> source.  This works fine.  However, in my multi-touch application, I need to drag/rotate/scale its wrapping container.  Drag works fine.  However, when it rotates/scales, the PDF disappears.
    From livedocs:
"If certain visual properties of an HTMLLoader object that contains a PDF document are changed, the PDF document will become invisible. These properties include the filters, alpha, rotation, and scaling
properties. Changing these properties renders the PDF content invisible until the properties are reset. The PDF content is also invisible if you change these properties of display object containers that contain the HTMLLoader object."
Is this still a limitation on Air 2/Hero?  Is there a workaround so the container/HTML/PDF can support rotating/scaling?
I want the multi-touch wall users to be able to make the PDF bigger, rotate the container/pdf, and drag it around the wall.  My drag/rotate/scale work very well on any other component, just not pdf.
Please explain why it disappears and if there is a workaround.
    Thanks,
    Don

I never did find a solution for this.  The Reader just doesn't support it.  What I ended up doing back then was to use ColdFusion's CFPDF tag to automatically convert each page in the PDF to an png, then do the touch gestures on the pngs.

  • Why does my PDF appear in Corel all garbled?

I have to get some posters & signs printed for an event urgently!
I did the artwork in InDesign & exported it to 'High Quality Print' PDF.
I took these PDFs to the printer & they opened them in Corel which they use to print off & it opened completly wierd & garbled. All the text was chinese & the document was a mess.
Why is this happeneing? How can I stop this or change it?
I tried to save the files to an ESP but it comes up witrh an error message "Export Error: Error due to an out of memory condition"
Would opening the ID file in Illustrator & then sending the file to the printer as an EPS help?
    Regards,

Neither CorelDRAW nor Adobe Illustrator are PDF file editors. The only PDF files that CorelDRAW can reliably and successfully open, edit, and/or print are PDF files created directly by CorelDRAW. Likewise, the only PDF files that Adobe Illustrator can reliable and successfully open, edit, and/or print are PDF files saved directly from the same or later version of Adobe Illustrator, assuming the “retain editability” option was specified.
The only safe program to open and print all PDF files from is Adobe Acrobat. Alternatively, a PDF file may be safely printed from a print system that natively RIPs PDF.
The fact that your “printer” is attempting to print your PDF files via CorelDRAW or even Adobe Illustrator demonstrates that your “printer” is very sorely lacking in knowledge of PDF workflow. I most strongly recommend that you find a better-educated “printer” with reliable workflows.

  • Hi, I was working on a PDF writing comments using Adobe Reader on a Mac.  I clicked save and got a 'cannot save' message.  I then clicked save as instead, Reader froze and my PDF disappeared.  The only version saved has only my first comment.  Does Adobe

Hi, I was working on a PDF writing comments using Adobe Reader on a Mac.  I clicked save and got a 'cannot save' message.  I then clicked save as instead, Reader froze and my PDF disappeared.  The only version saved has only my first comment.  Does Adobe Reader save to temporary files that I can access in order to recover my work?  Is there any other way to recover it?  Thanks!

    Hi @Pat Willener,
since I got the same problem as pdfprincess I hope you can help me. The 'Automatically save document changes to temporary file...' is enabled in my adobe reader.
A file I worked (commented) on a lot crashed. When I reopened the file, adobe reader didn't ask if I want to restore my changes in this file, as it is written on the help.adobe.com page. Is there any possibility to restore the changes manually from the temporary file?
Thanks in advance - it is really important for me to restore these changes!!

  • Why does my PDF come out rotated when I haven't selected that?

Why does my PDF come out rotated when I haven't selected that?

What you are trying to do is a process that we call “refrying a PDF file,” a process that we at Adobe most strongly discourage. There are facilities within Acrobat itself that allow you to remove objects and crop pages without having to ruin the PDF by creating PostScript and then distilling that back into PDF, a potentially very lossy process. You lose all color management, all live transparency, and could have font problems in the resultant PDF file.
The Adobe PDF PostScript Printer Driver Instance is parameterized by joboptions set in its properties. These properties have a parameter for page rotation. If the options specify automatic page rotation, you may be getting these unexpected results on the basis of Distiller's analysis of each page and trying to second guess the orientation. You should also be aware that the PostScript generated by Acrobat (and Reader) is optimized for printing on a PostScript device, not for generation of PDF by distillation.

You should be able to just place them in your Books library in iTunes and check to ensure that your Book library is configured to sync to your iPod when you sync your iPod to iTunes.

  • Why is my PDF printing off center when I have the landscape box checked?

I am having some trouble with printing my pdf's. I have several PDF's that are oriented in landscape orientation. In the past, they printed normally in landscape mode or autoportrait/landscape mode. Now they print fine in autoportrait/landscape mode, but print off center when printed in landscape mode. The reason this is a problem, is I have given instructions to 100's of my buyers for printing in "landscape mode"....have heard from one buyer already today with this printing problem. I  was then able to reproduce the problem on my own printer.  Is this a recent Adobe update and if so will it be fixed any time soon? Or is there something I have unknowingly done to my printer setting and this buyer has done the same? Thank you in advance for your help.

This is happening when I have the "actual size" box checked  (the scaling box is not checked). Also, the printable area is centered on the page in the original documents. I have printed all of these pdf's in the past with the landscape box checked and have never had this happen.

Have you deleted anything from your iTunes library ? Have you checked to see if they are still on your computer, but not listed in your iTunes library ?
If not then do they show in the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage for redownloading ? If they don't show there and others do and they are still in your country's store, then check to see if they are hidden : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919
If they are no longer in your store for redownloading (or you aren't in a country where music videos can be redownloaded) then you will need to copy them back from your backup of your library/downloads.

  • Why were my PDFs so small in Megabytes size?

    Hi,
Just something that has been bugging me - I recently sent 64 pages of a magazine to the printers with each page exported as a seperate pdf using the press quality preset. I was surprised and alarmed at the small file sizes of the pdfs - many pages were less than 3 or 4 megabytes. I phoned the printer and he confirmed evertyhing was ok but I still had a sleepless night worrying all the graphics would print lo-res or something else had gone horribly wrong.
Given the magazine pages were larger than a4 and contained plenty of pics, how did the pdfs end up so small? I'm used to working with a4 and a3 sized hi-res graphics in photoshop that can often be 40 or 50 mbs or more alone.
I'm not complaing at the small file sizes - I'm just curious as to how it can be so.

OK if you use the latest versions with the Adobe RIP you don't need to flatten but the real world facts are that not every one has it or can afford it.  I know I'll offend some of the regular posters here, but it's simply not possible for us to say 'use another printer' because some of us are printers!  And we can't afford to upgrade every few years.
    If you can except this.

    And this
Tell me, what's the advantage of sending a PDF that is not flattened? You have every benefit of the other joboptions except the ease of editing. IF your going to a prepress that does use a TRUE PDF workflow, what's the loss in using X1A. But if you happen to send it to a printer that does not, they have to flatten your work. And whether anyone wants to admit it or not, things happen during flattening that cant be explained (at least not by me). Yes its VERY rare, but rare is too often in this business.
I don't see the foolishness in sending my file with the least chance of error just because i COULD send it a newer way.
    And just to clarify
    I wrote:

This is by no means due to any persons lack of skill or ability. IF you doubt this check into the CS4 fix concerning nested embedded fonts. This issue actually caused me some very real trouble back in December / January... after hours of debate with Adobe techs, I was told it was a Quark problem.
Im not an "old dog" nor am I the type to remain using "archaic" or "foolish" methods... If someone can tell me why I would benefit from using the X-4 standards, ill change. But as of now the flattened versions seem much safer with very little reason not to use them. (When I have to edit a file, I'm not going to bother asking for someone to change how they make a PDF, I'm going to ask for natives. So please don't note the editability.)
