Why do Time Machine Sys. Prefs show default Time Capsule Name?

I've just reconnected my 3rd generation Time Capsule to my iMac after replacing my broadband/wireless router (and updated it to the 7.6 firmware). A new backup is being made, and all seems well except for one minor aesthetic niggle.
Perhaps I've simply not noticed it before, but the name of the Time Capsule in the Time Machine System Preferences is shown as the default name 'Time-Capsule-fe2ab5' rather than the name I configured it with and by which I selected it: 'My Time Capsule'. Restarting System Preferences doesn't fix this.
Why? Is it always like this? If not, is it possible to fix it?

The name there is 'My Time Capsule', but now I see that there is 'Time-Capsule-fe2ab5.local' underneath in smaller font, with an Edit button. It is possible to edit the name to e.g. 'My Time Capsule.local'. The explanation says that this is for setting a local hostname. There is also a global hostname setting. I've not used this Time Machine as a remote access point. I wonder which of these settings, if any, is being used for the name in Time Machine System Preferences? I'm experimenting now.

Do you mean in the panel when you +Select Disk+ or +Change Disk?+
,the bootable drive is one of the excluded (under options)
    1. how do I remove the bootable drive from the time machine?
If it's listed in the +Do not back up+ panel via Options, it's not being backed-up.
    2. How do I mount the time machine partition ?
Again, if you mean it doesn't appear in the +Select Disk+ or +Change Disk+ list of possible destinations, it means TM doesn't recognize it.
Does the TM partition appear on your Desktop and/or Finder sidebar?
If so, do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on the TM partition via Disk Utility, in your Applications/Utilities folder.
If that doesn't help, do a "full reset" of Time Machine, as in item #B3 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

  • Time machine has stopped showing backups

Time machine used to show backups back to when the machine was new in November. Now it has suddenly begun to show only today/now.
Regardless of which finder window I have opened, it always goes to 'computer' and shows the external hard drive, 'macintosh HD' and 'network' icons.
If I close time machine and open up the backups on my external hard drive, all the time machine backups are there. What IS going on?!

    Does this fix help?

  • My Time Capsule/Time Machine has been showing Preparing Backup for past 48 hours  continuously!

My Time Capsule reported Full the other day.  I now have only 26.8MB of 497.96 GB available. Since then it seems to backing up continuously. The Time machine preferences window shows "Preparing Backup" andnothing else, and it has been doing so for at least past 48 hours.  Any ideas as to the problem?
    Stuartyboy

Yes, the problem is the drive is full.
If you have other files or TM back from other computers, TM on your computer having issues will not be able to delete enough to get sufficient space to backup.
Read how to clean up and delete parts of backups.. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    Not a good idea though.
    Solution.
    1. Buy a new bigger TC.. cheaper (Than the original 500GB at least), faster and now the smallest is 2TB.
    2. Plug in a USB drive.. archive the TC.. then erase it and start a fresh set of backups.. April 1st great day to do it.
    3. Open up your old TC.. remove the 500GB drive and install a 2TB (if Gen1 a 3TB might even work). Google for how to do a hard disk upgrade.
Problem.. old power supply could die the day after and then the total cost would approach 1. Better to backup, wipe the 500GB and sell it on ebay and buy a new TC with 2 or even 3TB (2TB is better value IMHO).
    4. Plug in a USB drive .. formatted to HFS+ and use that as the target.
Very slow. much slower than the same drive plugged into your computer.

I have been using time machine to back up my Mac Book Pro 3.1 to my Time Capsule. Now the Time machine hangs up on "calculating time remaining".

    Operating system : OS X 10.10.1

This Time Machine software worked satisfactory until Monday Nov, 10 2014 and I have backups until that time. For several years, the software deleted the oldest back up to save the latest one. This is acceptable to me as I have off site storage that is updated every 3 months. How do I get Time machine working again?

I have spent a couple of days trying to respond to Linc Davis. Finally I figured it out . The following is a copy of data from my console from the initiation of a time machine backup until it gets stuck trying to calculate the time remaining. There is no indication that anything starts saving.  I copied about 3 minutes of data. This is probably way too much data, but I do not know what is relevant.
    Thanks for the help,

  • Problem with Time Machine Backup or Maybe Not Time Machine

The problem manifests after a Time Machine backup.
    I have an iMac 24-inch, Early 2008. iMac 8,1
Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM.
Last week I purchased two  4-Terabyte G-technology G-Drives. Each drive is equip with FireWire 800 and USB 3.0/2.0. In general use they seem to work fine on the iMac.
I designated one drive as a Time Machine Volume. This is where the problem happens.
Time Machine will do the initial backup just fine. Then it runs once per hour with no problem. Intermittently however, Time Machine will fail and report :
“Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “hard disk name”.
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.”
Interestingly enough if I try to open a folder on the Time Machine volume using the Finder I get:
“The operation can’t be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -50).
If I try to eject the volume I get the irksome “Cannot eject volume because it’s currently in use by one or more programs.”
To resolve this I’ve tried everything, from the banal verifying permissions, to swapping the two G-Drives around, swapping out all the cables, etc.. When the error occurs I go into the shell and check with lsof and always find no software apparently holding or using that volume.
    Very frustrating
I can force eject the volume, then remount the volume and things are back to normal. Same with restarting.
This happened under OS X Mountain Lion and is now happening under a clean install of Mavericks.
I thought that even though I don’t see any MDS  related processes using the drive, it might be spotlight, so I told spotlight not to index the volume. Problem still happens.
I’ve found that one person had almost this exact same problem at:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4756742
His solution turned out to be replacing the G-Drive with another brand new G-Drive.
Unfortunately, I cannot return the drives to the Apple store because the boxes were tossed out. I also don’t relish trying to explain that the drives work just fine until some glitch that occurs either just before or just after a Time Machine backup.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can also contact G-Drive while the drives are under warranty (one year I believe).
I have the same problem using Time Machine with the 2T G-Drive and my MacBook Pro. G-Tech emailed me a Firmware Update Utility app and, when that didn't solve the error message problem, they sent me a replacement drive and new cables, twice. The problem persisted; I get one or two backups each day and then the error message. I also can't copy anything to the drive and have to force eject it, so G-Tech suggested I see how well it worked with the USB cable.
Time Machine works flawlessly with the USB cable and the G-Drive, so G-Tech suggested it is a problem with my Firewire 800 port. I worked with Apple Care over the phone, doing all the tests suggested in Eric's post - testing with Disk Utility, Time Machines interface with my User Accounts, the Operating System, then resetting Time Machine, etc. and then I took it to the Genius Bar so they could run the tests themselves. All looked like it should be fine (but they were using a 1T G-Drive and all testing was done within 30 minutes)...when I got home, after two good backups, I got the error message again.
Apple Care finally suggested I make a Genius Bar appointment and sit at the store working with my MacBook, the G-Drive and Time Machine running until I got the error message, to prove the only thing left that could possibly be the cause of the problem, is the port.  I did this last Wednesday.
It is 9 days later and I got my computer back this afternoon...the logic board was replaced because the Firewire 800 port is attached to it...I got my first Time Machine back up at 5:34pm...and the error message again at 7:34pm.
The only solution, it seems, is to use the USB cable instead of Firewire. USB and Thunderbolt seem to be the direction Apple is taking, which is why so many people have been posting about this problem, here and elsewhere, with no real solutions from Apple. See this article:  http://www.infoworld.com/t/mac-laptop/how-cope-the-end-of-firewire-205957
I hope the USB works for you too.

I have set up Time Capsule to use with Time Machine but when I open Time Machine it 'cannot find' the Time Capsule and I have to 'Select the Disk' each time. In the Next Backup tab it always says "When disk is connected" even though the disk is already connected.

Your pro doesn't matter.. I presume it is happily working.
Your imac setup has got messed up because you changed from a local (my book being USB type I presume) to network drive. Did you do a clean install of Lion?
Did you use the backup from the Pro on the imac? Otherwise I don't see how the Pro shows up in use previous disk. Where is Pondini when you need him??
You cannot download Time Machine as an App and replace the current version. It is built into the OS.. the only way to do it is a clean install. Unfortunately that might be the only way around the issue.
There is a number of issues that Pondini has covered in the setup issues of troubleshooting.
This is the most relevant I think. http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html
But look at the whole section B setup problems.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If it was me, I would store all the info you need.. not using TM but using a straight copy of files.
Then clean install Lion. I doubt any of these issues would exist if you had not installed Lion over existing setup or used a different backup.
See if you can get Pondini to respond.. !!

  • Time machine backups wont move to time capsule

i have two mac minis, one is the mid 2010 model and the the other one is a 2006 model. i have successfuly used superduper to finally move my 500 gigs
of time machine backups to the new time capsule. but the older 2006 model has me lost. i am tempted to go to the applestore to make them copy it
if i follow the directions including resetting time machine the best i can get is a pop up box every hour that says the identity of the time capsule cannot
be verified. this does not show up on the 2010 mini
when i tell it to pick the drive theres 2 other drives that i dont even have! those are "HOME" and "NET" on "localhost" i have no idea where its getting
those drive paths. maybe its my readynas , when i go to /Volumes, there is no home or net folders
another problem i have with time machine is for some strange reason there is a range of backups in an old sparse bundle file and i would like to move all the backups for this computer into one main directory, instead of having to browse old time machines. but when i try to copy from one sprarse bundle to another i get an error saying that the backup files cannot be modified

Is that the message in #C15 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting?  If so, are you selecting Use This Disk?  If not, exactly what does it say (or post a screenshot).

That's correct; you cannot merge one set of backups into another.  A set of TM backups has a complex structure, with things all linked together; you cannot alter it.  See How Time Machine works its Magic for an explanation.

  • My external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive. Same thing has happened with Final Cut Express.

My new LaCie external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive.
The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.
I've run out of ideas. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

have you done some searches on FCPx and time machine? Is there a known issue with using a TM drive with FCPx? dunno but ...wait...I'll take 60 sec for you cause I'm just that kind of guy....   google...." fcpx time machine problem"  Frist page link

You cannot have time machine backups on your hard drive if you intend to use it in FCPX.
    booya!

  • Trying to use a new, larger external hard drive for my Time Machine backup.  However, every time I start the backup, it gets started then fails.  And, I can't delete the few files that did save on the external.  Sort of a catch 22.  Any ideas?

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

  • How can I get my Time Machine to recognize my new Time Capsule?

I have a new Time Capsule and in the initial setup I accidently clicked on the option for not using it with time machine. How do I set it up for time machine backup? Right now the wireless function as router works but time machine does not recognize the Time Capsule for back up.

welcome to the discussion area, Bob !
go system preferences > time machine > change disk. re-select the TM's volume and click +use for backups+.

  • How do i use a Time Machine from another computer from Time Capsule with multibackups

Can Iuse a Time Machine from another computer from Time Capsule with multibackups

Not sure what you are asking here.
Time Machine is software on a Mac that is used to backup that Mac to a Time Capsule hard drive.
Are you asking if another  Mac can backup to the same Time Capsule that other Macs are already using?
Or, if not....please clarify on exactly what you want to do.

  • Since I upgraded to Mavericks, Time Machine no longer finds the Time Capsule Disk on my network

    Hi,
Since I upgraded to Mavericks, Time Machine no longer finds the Time Capsule Disk on my network.
Five minutes before upgrading it however performed successfully a last backup.
I found several posts on this forum and proposed solutions:
    - restarted both the mac and capsule
    - deleted the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (twice rebooting in between)
    Still have the issue.

  • Time Machine Not Compacting SparseBundle on Time Capsule

    Hi
I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and have a time capsule to hold my iTunes Library and act as my Time Machine repository.
I'm experiencing the problem where Time Machine has filled up my 1TB Time Capsule, and will not back up any more.
I can see that Time Machine has tried to delete some old backups in order to create space - in fact it's deleted ALL my old back ups bar one, probably due to the fact that in deleting each old back up has not released any more space on the Time Capsule as the Sparse Bundle is still massive.
I have done some research and can see that other people were having this issue back in 2008 - so I thought it would have been resolved by now! I thought Time Machine was supposed to compact the sparse bundle image once it had deleted an image these days - but it doesn't seem to have happened.
Can someone tell me if there is some setting I need to select?
I might as well delete the current sparsebundle and just start again - so I don't want to find myself in the same situation in X months time!
    Many thanks
    Darren

I can't get back to some of the earlier logs as the widget crashes and takes down the whole dashboard with it! However I think I remember seeing some messages that stated that it couldn't compact the drive as it was already mounted.
I do use the drive to store my iTunes library as well - so perhaps I had mounted the drive when it ran out of space, and hence it's decision to try and remove all the previous backups.
Perhaps this is a good time to think about creating a disk image on the TC for TM to use so I can keep the backups separate from the other data.
Should I create a disk image and store all the iTunes data in it and let TM use the standard TC or vice versa and create an image for TM to use and then use the native TC for data - or does it not make any difference at all?
    Cheers for your help
